My dad was born in 1936 and grew up with this music and I started listening to all his records at 5 years old and I loved it. I'm glad you love it as well.
In those days in cities like Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey etc. 5 or6 friends would stand on a corner, no instruments, and sing the different melodies together for a beautiful blend of voices singing together in the night. This was common in the mid to late 1950s. Many record producers would walk the streets, trying to find the best of the best "Doo-Wop" singers in a particular neighborhood. Some folks from very poor places got discovered, and went to become stars, and go on tv shows. It sounds like something from a Hollywood movie, but it really happened.
Can you imagine when ebony and ivory came together to make beautiful music? This was the 50s. Before the Civil Rights movement. These people were breaking down barriers.

These guys also had a hit called "Get A Job" that was appropriated by the television group "Sha-Na-Na" in the mid to late 70's as their theme song. They had another hit with "Whispering Bells".

Why call out race. This is not true many groups sang together in blues, gospel and jazz natural transition to doo wop and early Rick. Under Democratic president Lyndon Johnson drove people apart divided by color. Never a division in true gospel or doo wop. My generation fought for unity.

Jim Crow was the law of a significant part of the country at that time and that's why it was important. Lyndon Johnson was able to get landmark civil rights and voting rights acts passed, and if you grew up in that time you should know how terrible things were for people of color. It was all about race.

I was playing no race game...I was congratulating this group for recognizing that we ARE all one human race by going against the heavy racism in the 50's music industry which dictated that groups should be one race only (white or black or Latino or Asian etc. but NOT be mixed). I lived in the 50's and saw that first hand-perhaps you did not. The Del-Vikings were one of the few groups way back then to break the race barriers and have both black and white in their group. Judging by all my thumbs up and no thumbs down on my first comment, my meaning was clear but apparently not to you. When we get to a place where we are ALL race/color blind, that will be great but it still has not happened but the point you missed was that racism was much much worse in the 50's. This group was a nice exception to that racism.

I was born in 1963 so I didn't exactly grow up with all this 1950s doo-wop etc. that you're covering over the past few months....but I wasn't far removed...and then I grew up with Happy Days...a TV show that brought back all that great music.....and I'm also very familiar with swing music/jazz from the 1930s and 40s, because my parents grew up during The Great Depression (I also played trumpet in jr high and high school). I feel fortunate to have experienced a LOT of different genres of music over several decades....and it's fun seeing you respond to REAL music the way you do! If you ever see the early film by George Lucas titled "American Graffiti", it's packed full of music like this!

To Jeanne Hurdel, I loved reading about your son going from heavy metal to doo wop. Recently my 50 year old son said to me that he feels sorry that his children won't appreciate this music that we love. I said "Why?" It's because he didn't expose them to it like I did with my children. Always played it on the record player and in the car. When he goes somewhere in the car the kids either put on what they want to hear or they have ear buds on listening to whatever. Just like the hosts of this channel when you really listen to these songs you will hear and feel the music. My kids love it. Some of them also like heavy metal too. Lol

This music takes me back to my childhood in Brooklyn. I can envision the older guys singing in a hallway or under the street lights.. a time when the emphasis was put on the vocals. The music I grew up with. I was raised in Brooklyn, NY. When I was young singers would sing on street corners under the street lights which in those days shone straight down in a circle, creating a spotlight. They'd sing in hallways and subway stations for the echo. This type of style was invented because these young guys didn't have money for instruments, all they had were their voices, so the background singers had to imitate instruments. So the nonsense words they sung were called "Do-Wop". Sometimes they actually used the phrase do-wop. Again, this music is why we oldsters don't listen to today's music.

The "Philadelphia Sound" where upstart Groups of friends and neighbors would sing on street corners without instruments, using only vocals to carry the song. The 1950's TV show "American Bandstand" also originated in Philadelphia.
This is the song that John Lennon and the Quarrymen was singing on the back of a truck at the Woolton garden fete in 1957, where a young Paul McCartney was so impressed that he went along after the show and was introduced to the band. Well, you know that happened after that. Interestingly, Johnny always altered the lyrics to the song, for example, "Come go with me, down to the penitentiary" One of my favorite songs ever.
Clarence E. Quick who was the bass singer in this fantastic group…wrote their greatest hits which were this fine song and also a gem called “Whispering Bells”! He can be heard singing the lines of “…You never give me a chance…” These guys were awesome! One of the top groups to come out of the Doo Wop era! Timeless!
Doo Wop was really big in the late 1950s and into the sixties before the British Invasion. I remember good ole Gene Chandler with his cape and cane singing "Duke of Earl" and a ton of other artists.
Doo-wop is played over a 1-6-2-5 chord progression, in C, it's C to Am to Dm to G. Those are called "rhythm changes" from the tune "I've Got Rhythm " by George Gershwin, some call them "ice cream chords", and every song has a bridge with different chords, and then back to the rhythm changes. This song was a big hit when I was in Jr. High.

Doo-Wop are for the most part acapella with a lead singer and the other voices making sounds in place of instruments. Historically, most of Doo-Wop groups began on street corners or subway stairwells. At times they may use guitar or another instruments such as a saxophone.
The lead singer of this particular famous recording was a white guy named Gus Backus. Unfortunately he is not on the photo shown here. Gus was a GI. From 1959 on he was stationed on a base in Germany. Gus applied to a german record company and became a succesful pop singer of funny german "Schlager" which he sang in german language with a heavy american accent. Gus remained in Germany most of his further life and was married to a german wife. He passed away in 2019. If you'd like to listen to the late Gus Backus performing "Come go with me" live on stage watch the channel of his son Jeffrey Backus, video "Gus Backus & The Firebirds, Chemnitz 2012". Unfortunately it was not recorded professionally.
I have a playlist of like 13 bangers from the 50s and 60s that never fails to get me dancing and singing. Use it while I'm cleaning. This song, Little Bitty Pretty One (Thurston Harris), Just a Gigolo (Louis Prima) and Handyman (Jimmy Jones) just get me going.

The music I grew up with. I was raised in Brooklyn, NY. When I was young singers would sing on street corners under the street lights which in those days shone straight down in a circle, creating a spotlight. They'd sing in hallways and subway stations for the echo. This type of style was invented because these young guys didn't have money for instruments, all they had were their voices, so the background singers had to imitate instruments. So the nonsense words they sung were called "Do-Wop". Sometimes they actually used the phrase do-wop. Again, this music is why we oldsters don't listen to today's music.
In the old days you could see several groups singing Doo Wop on street corners or storefronts...acappella of course. Boys to Men were along that idea.

The "Philadelphia Sound" where upstart Groups of friends and neighbors would sing on street corners without instruments, using only vocals to carry the song. The 1950's TV show "American Bandstand" also originated in Philadelphia.
This is the song that John Lennon and the Quarrymen was singing on the back of a truck at the Woolton garden fete in 1957, where a young Paul McCartney was so impressed that he went along after the show and was introduced to the band. Well, you know that happened after that. Interestingly, Johnny always altered the lyrics to the song, for example, "Come go with me, down to the penitentiary"

Doo Wop was really big in the late 1950s and into the sixties before the British Invasion. I remember good ole Gene Chandler with his cape and cane singing "Duke of Earl" and a ton of other artists.
Doo-wop is played over a 1-6-2-5 chord progression, in C, it's C to Am to Dm to G. Those are called "rhythm changes" from the tune "I've Got Rhythm " by George Gershwin, some call them "ice cream chords", and every song has a bridge with different chords, and then back to the rhythm changes. This song was a big hit when I was in Jr. High.

Doo-Wop are for the most part acapella with a lead singer and the other voices making sounds in place of instruments. Historically, most of Doo-Wop groups began on street corners or subway stairwells. At times they may use guitar or another instruments such as a saxophone.

It's acapella singing. The genre is doo wop.
The lead singer of this particular famous recording was a white guy named Gus Backus. Unfortunately he is not on the photo shown here. Gus was a GI. From 1959 on he was stationed on a base in Germany. Gus applied to a german record company and became a succesful pop singer of funny german "Schlager" which he sang in german language with a heavy american accent. Gus remained in Germany most of his further life and was married to a german wife. He passed away in 2019.
If you'd like to listen to the late Gus Backus performing "Come go with me" live on stage watch the channel of his son Jeffrey Backus, video "Gus Backus & The Firebirds, Chemnitz 2012". Unfortunately it was not recorded professionally.
I have a playlist of like 13 bangers from the 50s and 60s that never fails to get me dancing and singing. Use it while I'm cleaning. This song, Little Bitty Pretty One (Thurston Harris), Just a Gigolo (Louis Prima) and Handyman (Jimmy Jones) just get me going.
