I feel just as lucky having grown up listening to this era of music in the 80s and 90s. Dad always had "the oldies" station on. I think that's what helped me appreciate many years and genres of music. But the 50s and 60s will always be one of, if not my favorite times in music.

Dear India, I was a 15 year old in 1964 working at the A&W drive-in restaurant in Kitchener Ontario when a co-worker suggested I invite Erica, another co-worker, to see Jay and the Americans who were appearing at Waterloo Lutheran University. I finally summoned the courage to invite her and away we went. Neither of us had any idea what we were going to see but the show was wonderful. As soon as I could scrape the money together (I was earning 75 cents per hour) I bought their album and wore it out. Thanks for bringing back some great memories with music that has stood the test of time.
Yes... this is old school. Back when a commitment to developing your talent and dedication mattered. No auto-tune or cheap tricks, simply dedication and talent. Beautiful lyrics and heart! No F-this-N-S-W-B.... Simply talent and dedication, that's all.
Other great songs by Jay & the Americans "This Magic Moment", "Walkin' in the Rain", "Crying", "Only in America", "Lets Lock The Door (and throw away the key). I was 12 in 1964 and this was the end of the era of love songs begun in the fifties. Rock bands were coming on strong writing their own songs and long jam driven pieces of music were coming. I love all these songs and the singing & musical abilities, no auto tune or sampling. Each era has produced great musicians & masterpieces, music is the great unifier.
I’ve seen Jay in person many times and heard him sing this song every time. I still got chills like 5 times during the song this time. Jay is my all-time favorite singer. ❤️ him!
Jay had classical training and had studied to be a Cantor. I would have loved to hear him sing "Kol Nidre". He truly had an amazing voice, and holding those notes had the audience in awe. RIP, Mr. Black.

I love these reactions! They don't know what they are missing until the rediscover some of these greats! I was born in 1980 and since I was in my early 20s I've loved the music from the 60s. I have a decent record collection, about 100 albums. I've been searching for Jay Black and the Americans with Cara Mia on it... I can only seem to find the albums that don't have this song... Also, I'm familiar with this group going as far back as Jay Traynor from the late 50s even though they didn't get their breakthrough until their first big hit She Cried in 1962, all the way through to their last biggest song There Goes My Baby from 71 before they split in 73. It didn't matter which singer, Jay and the Americans are a masterpiece! And they had other great songs such as Come A Little Bit Closer, This Magic Moment, Hushabye, and others... However, Cara Mia to me really shows Jay (David) Black his vocal talents! Yes, his original name is David and he agreed to adopt the name Jay Black to keep the name of the group as Jay and the Americans! This to me is the staple of American Pop Culture Music at its peak with Caria Mia from 1965. He set the bar with his vocal tones! There were many other groups and solo artists in this area that were superb, but I believe this song can rival any other song in History! It's not necessarily my favorite song of all time, but I think it is probably one of the Best Songs of All Time! Even as good as Elvis was, this song by Jay Black would definitely give him a run for his money! As good as Sinatra was, this song would give him a run for his money. Even as good as The Four Seasons were with a new #1, 2 or 3 each and every week, this song would give them a run for their money! Even the powerful duo with harmony and soul, the Righteous Brothers, again this song would given them a run for their money! I would love to see more of this younger generation do reaction videos on this song. I've seen quite a few popular reaction video channels and yet so few have done this song! Please, let's make this song popular again!
I was 15 when this song came out. Kids on my street LOVED Jay & the Americans as we did ALL of the good groups. It started with the Beach music, which we lived because we lived 8 miles from Huntington Beach, Ca. Then the Beatles arrived. What a GREAT time it was to be a teenager!!!

Jay has got a very wonderful strong voice and probably never had to practice in his whole life. Jay did not write Cara Mia but he re-vamped that song back when he was early twenties I reckon. @@vtbn53 I stand corrected. You make me Wiki this, and it appears that I have once again exhibited my ignorance. I listened to the David Whitfield version. It is beautiful but doesn't compare. This may be one of those instances where the cover is better than the original.
@@brownie1341 Well that is your opinion, and you are welcome to it, IMHO Whitfield had a much better voice than Black who required falsetto to hit the notes that Whitfield sang naturally, but I concede Jay and the Americans produced a great "pop" version of the British #1 song.
I still have the Greatest Hits (33 1/3 LP) album. I got it from my dad when it came out. Gotta love the ever present go-go dancers. If you were performing on a television show you had go-go's 🙈
I heard Jay tell the story in concert in Boston that he had "recorded" "Come a Little Bit Closer" merely as a rough "scratch track," where he was simply getting a feel for the lyrics. In his words, he was simply reading the lyrics from the sheet music aloud, not actually singing the way he normally would. He had plans to actually properly record the song later, when he and the Americans came off the road. When he heard the tune on the radio he called up his record company, furious that they had released a walk-through. If I recall correctly, he hadn't actually even known that they had kept the recording. When the record label told him the song was racing up the charts, well, he realized it was too late. THAT's how good he was --- he had a smash hit simply reading. I guess that's what he would have sounded like narrating an audio book...
Jay Black sold ices a block away from where I lived when I was a kid and he was in high school. I saw him a few times a few years back at outdoor oldies concerts near Coney Island and he performed with his son Beau. Jay has a great sense of humor and always has the crowd cracking up and they usually end the show with "Come A Little Bit Closer" as that is always the show-stopper.
Were those the Marty Markowitz concert series shows? I probably saw the same show you did. Many don't know that Jay was born David Blatt and came from an Orthodox Jewish family. He got his start singing in public as part of a cantor's choir in synagogues. You're correct about his humor. The in between song jokes are almost as good as his songs!
@@shave-a-thon3415 Yes. I went to many of those concerts and Marty Markowitz thought he was Murray the K with that white suit of his. I would make fun of how he would just talk and talk between performances as host of the concerts but now I really appreciate what great shows he put together. I saw many greats at those concerts. I knew Jay was Jewish but I don't think I ever heard about the orthodox part. Those were the best days growing up with so much fabulous music.
@@andreaschmall5560 As some here may not know. Marty was the Brooklyn Borough President and before that a state senator. His office would produce probably the best concert series of the summer in NYC thanks to donations. It made Central Park's Summerstage series seem like an out of town amateur hour. Jay was hysterical when he would perform in the Catskills. You might find this interview enjoyable. forward.com/schmooze/207574/how-jay-black-got-kicked-out-of-yeshiva/

He can sing this song and it sounds the same when he is 72 years old. Amazing voice.
