The early rock and rollers were usually very flamboyant and energetic. Got the kids dancing. You gotta listen to Maybellene, My Ding-A-Ling, and Roll Over Beethoven.
Keith Richards and Mick Jagger started playing music together because Keith saw Mick holding a Chuck Berry album at a train station. The rest is history
This song is actually about a piano player named Johnnie Johnson. Chuck said he changed the piano to a guitar because "You can't put a piano in a gunny sack." The story just worked better with a guitar player. Johnnie actually plays on most of Chuck's studio recordings and is credited with helping Chuck write the melodies to his songs. In fact, Chuck basically took over Johnnie's band. It used to be the Johnnie Johnson Trio back in the early 50's in St. Louis. They were a popular blues band and Chuck kept trying to join in with them. One night their regular guitar player couldn't make it and Johnnie let Chuck sit in. Johnnie said it was just magic. They totally clicked and Chuck was great on stage as an entertainer. Johnny recognized Chuck's exceptional charisma and basically stepped aside and let Chuck take over leadership of the group and put his name on it. I got most of that form a documentary about Chuck made in the mid 80's called Hail! Hail! Rock And Roll! It's fascinating, but a bit long to react to. Johnnie retired in 1973 but came back out of retirement for this documentary. This is a short clip of the two of them just fooling around during a break from shooting. th-cam.com/video/XvqXuHzxMT0/w-d-xo.html Sorry for the novel but Chuck and Johnnie are among my favorite musicians, and I get a bit excited.
Thanks for the background on Johnny B. Goode , Chuck Berry without a doubt amongst the top three Kings of R&R , those 3 being Elvis, Chuck , and Little Richard, Rock On!
actually Chuck was from St. Louis. Was originally a hairdresser before going fulltime as a musician. One of the greatest songwriters of the rock and roll era. Legendary.
John Lennon once said, "If you were gonna give R&R a name, it'd be Chuck Berry." One of the original father's of R&R along w Little Richard. You can't just sit listening to this music. It begs you to dance. Chuck was famous for not only his infamous riffs but "duck walk" & other moves while playing. Amazing artist!!
This man and his guitar changed rock and roll for ever. With out him we would probably of never had all that great guitar rock of the late 60s and 70s that lead to all the great rock we have up till this day. Sure there would have still been great rock and roll; but who knows if the electric guitar would have took center stage in most bands like it did?

"Johnny B. Goode" was ranked #7 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". This song was also sent into space, as it was included on the Voyager Golden Records on the two 1977 Voyager space probes. The Golden Records were recordings of 27 musical pieces by composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, various Eastern musical greats, and relative contemporaries like Blind Willie Johnson and Berry. The spacecrafts are now in interstellar space.
Chuck Berry is the Godfather of modern day Rock n roll. The Beatles, Beach Boys and Rolling Stones continued what he started. Check out Hail Hail Rick n Rock from 1986. It's a tribute to Chuck Berry.
I had the privilege to be a member of one of Chuck's Outlaw bands! he would call ahead, ask "Who's who? local music scene! Hire us on time deal! Got to jam with him 1 time, other than my daughter, greatest moment of my life
All of the music that i love starts right here with Chuck. He is the guy that has influenced everybody that has ever picked up a guitar. Regardless if they have heard of him or not. His influence is the bed rock of rock and roll. I hate to imagine a world without the influence of Chuck.
"Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll" -- Chuck Berry -- Legend! He set the model for guitar players for the first ten years of rock and roll and beyond. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, he died in 2017 at the age of 91. RIP. When you're ready for more from him check out some of these classics -- "School Days", "Maybellene", "Rock'n'Roll Music", "You Never Can Tell", "No Particular Place to Go", "Promised Land", "Around And Around", "Back In The U.S.A.", "Little Queenie" among others.
For me, he is the true king of Rock N Roll. He wrote his music, played the hell out of that guitar during that age and influenced generations of rock bands to come with his style.
Shawn, "I ain't never seen nothing like that". Now imagine seeing this in the 50s. Must've been like watching a spaceship landing. Chuck Berry gave birth to all rock n roll legends that came after him. Absolute royalty!
The three great rock guitar pioneers who changed the sound of electric guitar, Chuck was the original guitar hero. Wrote the songs, played and was a great entertainer. Everyone came after him. The next was Jimi Hendrix, took guitar to the space age. Then Eddie Van Halen who took it to the next step. Everyone who plays rock guitar owes a Lot to Chuck. By the way, there is a NASA satellite out there with a disc with the sounds of earth on it in case an advanced civilization finds it. Johnny B Goode is on that disc. Can't beat that. Go Chuck!!

I saw Chuck in Canada at a lake town resort in Port Dover, across the lake from Erie, PA in the early 70s. It was a blast. Chuck actually was a teacher in Chicago, I believe, before he became a musician. The moves across the stage by the guitarist with ACDC, Angus Young, were inspired by Chuck. Chuck was definitely a trendsetter and legend. You are doing some great music. Cheers from Canada
My first concert: 1975, I was fifteen. A half filled auditorium ( Chuck was not real fashionable at that time, I guess), but he ROCKED! I knew I was watching a legend.
