This week I picked up a paint brush for the first time in four years, ever since I was an art student in high school. Join me in a series of oil painting timelapses and color mixing p*rn while I attempt to unleash my inner Bob Ross and paint a portrait.

skin tone is really quite easy to mix. Brown (anything from a yellow ochre to a burnt sienna or burnt umber), white, and a TOUCH of red or blue (depending on the undertones of the skin your painting)
Just play around with those colors for an hour or so and youll get the hang of it.
excuse idk how yellow ochre would work in oil paint, it works awesome for very light skin tones in watercolor though

So we love when you give us behind the scenes relatable Ashley j chillin content but I really want to thank you for the amount of energy you take to bring us substantive content as well. As in. I have really enjoyed watching your videos but I've also learned a lot and become a better (not just happier) person because of the financial talks, organizational tips, and fashion advice. It's like having a friend helping me pick out professional outfits or genuinely trying to help me save money or get my life together. I know on TH-cam it's tempting to be flashy click baity or aesthetically pleasing but totally empty. But you're anything but vacant. So thanks for striking a balance between relatability and genuine talent. I like that you don't take yourself too seriously but you take your craft seriously (art fashion videography) instead of just encouraging people to dick around.

I bought paints after watching your video and getting inspired 5 months ago. It's a good thing I did because all art stores are closed now. I've been painting for the past couple of days for the first time in 10 years probably. I was never good at it and I don't strive to be, but it's been so therapeutic just smearing some paint around and not having to show it to anyone.
Anyway, thanks Ashley for your wise words and for inspiring me. Hope you're finding more time to paint and we get to see more of it in the future. :)

I've been going through a really hard time and was recently hospitalized for my poor mental state. I've been struggling with my self worth and associating my many commitments to being worthy of taking up space in the world. This video hit me straight in the feels as an ex art student who just graduated college. Haven't picked up a brush in 4 years either, and literally every waking moment is all about how I will possibly make money and support myself and my family. 17:20 I think that's why out of all the things I've tried out, I've stuck with drawing and I'm better at it than anything else because even if I don't practice frequently I know that all my progress won't immediately go away and as a slow learner, that's pretty comforting.
The using a mirror instead of photos thing actually makes sense: when you take a picture the result is a three dimensional thing pressed into a flat image - with a mirror you can see the depth way better and develop a better sense for 3D in general :)
Also the end result is absolutely stunning omg
And it’s always better to paint/draw etc. from real life.

I love this painting! As a current art student, I truly understand the resentment that builds up when your assigned work. I like art more now because I get the freedom to create what I enjoy rather than assigned still life drawings.
