  • After driving this Jaguar X-type estate over 1,600 miles in the first month of driving it, what has it been like? How is an X-type to live with? What is my Jaguar X-type estate like after 1,600 miles?

I absolutely love this car. It's practical and has style at the same time. I use to own an S type. I feel both the X and the S are severely under appreciated because of the Ford affiliation. These cars are beautiful and reliable. Some day people will realise this !!!

I had a 2.5 litre auto petrol saloon in metallic green and four wheel drive, like your car it was a high miles, and relatively cheap, and I bought it as a stop gap. I was coming out of a four litre xj8, and again like you was a little strapped for cash at the time. I have to admit that I had a snobbish attitude to the car, however it served me well and despite paying only a thousand GBP I ran it a year, with no dramas and sold it for eight hundred. It averaged 27 UK Gallons per mile in mixed driving, although a preponderance of highway. Comfortable, refined and I enjoyed it. So to those who look down on the model I think you are missing out. They are cheap give it a try!

I've test driven a couple and have driven a couple of the Ford cousins (we got the Volvo V70 but not the V50). Calling this a Mondao is like calling a loaded Lexus ES a base model Toyota Camry. People too often want to compare it to an XJ and it is NOT an XJ. But that is the point - this was entry class vehicle and should be compared with a Mondao, or a C-Class or a Camry. In my opinion it is the best riding and handling of them and the nicest place be. I just wish the US got some of these in diesel (and I wish we got more of wagon's in general.)

Never had an X-type but I think yours looks amazing inside and out. I've been looking in the US since your videos on the estate, but they are still pretty pricey in the US. No $500-wonders here unfortunately. Love your car. Glad it's behaving well for you and your family,

Glad to hear your Jag wagon is holding up well and performing as advertised! It gets excellent mileage as a diesel engine does, economical even though diesel fuel is more expensive than gasoline.
Great video, keep us posted on this car!

I got 58 plates X-type from Copart for £600 two months ago, The drive belt tensioner needed fixing, 185,000 miles. Getting 40mpg in town and a sweet 56.6Mpg cruising from London to Manchester at 65mph. I love the Jag ride, but DIY fixes are a money-saver - repairs can hit the wallet hard if you're not handy.

Likewise I only like the estate version. I would happily entertain a AWD 2.5 or 3.0L V6 estate with the Sovereign trim. These are still relatively expensive in the UK with only the diesels fetching bargain prices. They are also quite rare in the V6 specification. Underrated cars are my preference & I don’t care at all that it shares parts with a Mondeo.

Don't worry about changing gear all the time, you have a nice new clutch !
Have you considered blamking off some of the front grilles of the car ? For a Diesel and short journeys I'd think this would help faster warmup and maybe economy quite a lot....

Looks like a good daily driver car! It does about the same fuel economy as my 2008 Mazda 3 2L petrol engine manual.

Nothing wrong with them. The estate still looks quite elegant, unlike the saloon IMV. Rotting sills as you found and weak small retro headlights, perhaps the only major drawbacks. The 2.2l diesel much more refined than the earlier 2.0l and 6 speed makes a world of difference over 5 speed manual too. Still very practical, comfortable and no disgrace in having reliable, cheap Ford Mondeo parts either. I had a lovely XJ6, without air con too, like your other car. Have you ever considered the XJ40? Not a lot of love for those either, hence still cheap, but the AJ6 engine is a world longer lived than the XK engine and they are very refined too, in good condition.

I had a Daimler XJ40 for a few years but I ended up not using it much. I always prefers driving my XJ6 or XJ12 over the XJ40

@@LivingWithAClassic Mine was a bright red 1989 4.0l Sovereign, fully loaded, with cream, red piped leather. The metallic Silver 4.2 XJ6, with dark blue leather was nice, but not a patch driving compared to the XJ40 - but as I say some people don't like them - I loved the design. Drove both many many miles around Europe. The XJ6 was '83 and not that old - in those days, in Spain they'd never seen one and I remember passing, at speed, over the flat highways of La Mancha, a boy on a donkey, just watching. I used to take both to Creamers Of Kensington, where the Queen mother had her Jags serviced - very expensive but royal treatment. Fine cars all and great channel.

Like you not a fan of the X Type and IF I had to have one, it would be the same as you have, I don't care That it is a mix and match it's the looks that never appealed.

I'm planing to get one. Is parts for them hard to find? Some people says its hard to find and sometimes expensive compering to Audi and BMW estate alternatives.

      @LivingWithAClassic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Parts are easy and pretty inexpensive. They share suspension and brake parts with Fords and Volvos

@@LivingWithAClassic Thank you. Good to hear it. It is unpopular car so I get many unpopular opinions on it. I can tell you one thing, as far im done my reaserch, its amazing car for its price, just wanted to be sure and better check twice.

WOW, my '83 Jag XJ6 only get 13 liters per 100 km, one half the milage of your X type Estate wagon. Can you tell us how to improve the mileage on the XJ6's ? ;)

I have an early Mondeo with the same platform as my project car. My opinion is that it offers decent handling and a comfortable ride. Not a very good car when it comes to build quality though... something that's probably better with the Jaguar.

Had a model as a company car it did handle well, I think a little sharper than the x type, although the x type rides better in my opinion. Both underrated cars I think.
