So I was describing this channel to my dad the other day and he replied 'so hes basically doing what top gear should have never stopped doing, reviewing cars people might actually buy' ... And I had a bit of an epiphany and realised... 'Yea thats exactly what hes doing review wise... As well as MASSIVELY overspending' 😅
Matt, I’ve just discovered your videos in the last few weeks. Can honestly say it would be a pleasure to buy a car from someone who appears to care for the car and its future owner. Loved your Seat Leon FR for £3k video and have watched dozens since! 😎
I had a 2.2 (i think it was) manual diesel. Love it. Was like driving a sofa. The other half managed to dent EVERY bit of it. Even the roof (she was transporting a microwave, didn’t unlock the car or open the boot before and 'placed it at pace' (dropped it) on the roof). Loved having it.
With the sofa bit you are a bit exaggerating, yes, the drive is nice, but it's way more sporty type of suspension than plush, also, the seats aren't sofa like, atleast mine aren't, maybe they weren't sat in that much XD
I'm on my second X-Type estate.. 2007, 140,000 miles..stunning car. I'm a great believer in the 'Law of Diminishing Returns'.. My neighbour bought a £40+ thousand pound Mercedes Estate.. every time he steps outside to look at it it's worth a few hundred pounds less. My X-Type estate has all the room needed for my boat and horsey stuff, gives me 50mpg, is manual and wonderful for overtaking, same performance as the petrol version. I would drive it to Greece and back tomorrow without a second thought. Superb cream, stitched leather interior, all the electric bells and whistles, brilliant air-con.. stunning metallic paint.. What would I need to spend to replace it with something more modern and every week suffer the pain of seeing the dashboard light up like a Christmas tree telling me of the list of items in need of attention?
Matt, don’t worry about Marshall tyres.Friend of mine had a heavy recovery business, and he loved Marshall’s, they were very strong hard sidewall tyres which never failed, if u see all the tyres that do fail on a truck, well he never had any bother and made a point of getting some in stock whenever he could.
Lovely car but not ULEZ compliant in the London area. Kahn fleecing motorists down here, enjoy these old motors while you can and thanks for the upload.
Rust at the rear of the sills is a well-known problem, and difficult to spot because there is a plastic "sill" over the top of it. I have actually seen a sill being installed after the rusted one had been cut out and removed. This was at a Jaguar specialist in Newcastle-under-Lyme, now sadly no longer trading. I used to take my XJ6s there, (X350 models).
Hey Matt - I used to have to 2.5v6, and loved it.. J gate gearbox, plenty of torque and a lovely drive.. I had the sports trim.. loved it. Looked up the MOT recently, and rusted out to be written off a few years ago, but loved it. Only had 15 year life span though.. rust got the better of it. Anyway, happy new year to you!
Rust kills them all. Mine died at 15 years also. It bled me dry in maintenance costs over the 10 years I owned it. A piece of scrap, although enjoyable to drive when running right.
I am in the USA but like your videos. You sometimes show the money losing bangers, not just the good profit ones, are more realistic, with humour vs. too many car trading story sites.
Matt, she's an absolute beauty. Looks like new and low miles. I don't think it's totally out of the realms of possibility for someone to give you £5K for that. Honestly,,,,, 3 nd a half is a bit low. Stop doubting yourself!! You're keeping these beautiful older cars on the road and it's a beautiful thing!!!
Apologies in advance! I usually cannot stand car salesmen as i find 99.9% have pound signs in eyes and will tell you anythinv you want to hear about the car they are trying to sell you. Matt however seems to be the ideal carsalesman you want to buy a car off as he does things as though he is selling to a family member or as he would like to buy a used car. Nice one for the videos and the advice given also the road trips show how reliable the cars he sells are. Top channel.
My Dad had the 3.0 brand new when I had a 924 Carrera GT, he dropped me off at the garage to pick it up after a repair, i couldn't catch him on the way home and it sat so well on the road , the X type is an absolute gem
I have 06 2.2d manual, the car that got me into cars something like 10 years ago. I modded it with some parts from Focus RS, Volvo etc and now it's pushing 300whp, did more than 50k km like that and haven't had a single issue, even the sills aren't rotting away, this car will stay with me till my last days, i love it
Just started watching. I've got "Massively over spent" "Sills" "Double wishbone" and "Some car in it's day" on my bingo card Incidentally, facelift 2.2d automatic.... that's the same spec as one I got 6 points in.
I remember considering a X Type as a company car, they looked really stylish when they were first launched. I went for the Mondeo ST24 instead swayed by ‘a 24 valve V6’ 😃 You could add £500 to that by photographing it in a gravel driveway in front of a nice house and pitching it as a ‘classic’. It’s a great value car for the next owner with all that remedial work invested in already👍
I had a 2004 X Type with the 3 liter petrol (US) and AWD, which I loved. Comfortable, nice to drive, and the engine had a nice exhaust note. Sadly, the ABS went bad after 93,000 miles, and the dealer wanted more than the car was worth to fix it. That car got me hooked on Jags / JLR: I traded it in for a 2015 XF. Which I later swapped for an XE, followed by a Discovery Sport, and now a Defender.
A part of me wishes diesels were more of a thing outside of work trucks here in the US because of how much more fuel efficient they are, but it’s a double edged sword given the increased maintenance costs
Had a 3 litre V6 sport. I think about it almost every day, but in mourning, just like when a well loved pet dies. I bitterly regret selling it. I wish they still made these, proper saloon with good sized boot. The driver satisfaction was second to none.
I so enjoy Matt’s videos, perfect balance of facts and humour where appropriate (“ooh, National Trust badge, Classic FM”!) Clearly knows his stuff, I’d buy from him, great stuff!
These post facelift in good condition looks great for a fwd car. Nice rims. Good colour. I wish all car dealers did this to their stock. Kudos to Matt. Awesome!
That's a really nice Jag , very clean for its age and with its makeover it looks almost mint . Even if you don't get the full asking price there is still a profit in it , good luck Matt 👍
Hi Matt, I have had a few of these X Types and have found the 2.1ltr petrol FWD model to be the most practical. And I still believe that this car would have been even more practical with a 2ltr four cylinder engine. And then perhaps even a turbo model just for the lead foot who needs to go faster than practical. The V6 only uses more petrol than necessary.
looks like the 2.2 se d spec, these were great cars new, i worked at jag when they came out, always said they would be a great buy when older, just watch for the sills on them, you have to look behind the outer sill covers though to check them and underneath too, the 2.0 had issues with the auto box but other than that great cars, if you can find a late sovereign they were loaded to hell with extras on the final run out models, and the sports are good too.
Matt, I love the x type but as you say, the sills kill them off, this is normally caused by a foam sound deadening sponge behind the wheel arch liners in the front wings at the bottom of the drain hole. these hold the water in and the mud resulting in rotten sills, there was a vid on TH-cam about it, the amount of mud and water that came out when they poked it with a coat hanger wire was unbelievable! might be worth checking any x type you have or future purchase for this.
@@GregoryTKint when you get time, jack up the front of the car undo the screws holding the rear bottom of the liner and you will see a foam sponge in a plastic wrapper. remove that and poke a welding rod or coat hanger and watch the amount of mud and water that comes out! a blocked drain hole is a sure fire way of wet carpets and rusty sills!
Loved my X type, great comfortable drive, very fast for a diesel, loads of people call them Fords, but wait until you need suspension parts, all unique which probably explains the ride quality. Felt they were great VFM personally.
I love the x-type,massively underrated! I had a 3 litre V6 sport. Gorgeous car, drove beautifully (very thirsty though) great video Matt, good luck for 2024 and keep em coming 😀👍🏻
Love these jag reviews I've got an X type same year bought it as an Inbetweener and still got it almost 3 years later I'll look after it as long as it looks after me,also got an xf mind and your favourite phrase massively overspent comes to mind.
My Dad had a 2.1 petrol 2001 auto X type in that gold colour…I gt insured for it,1st auto I ever drove…loved that car…he upgraded the alloys to the ones on this car. Thought I was Arthur Daley driving that car, thought I was the bomb. Was heavy on fuel tho. Anyway Happy New Year Matt…keep doin wot ur doin & this time next year you’ll be a millionaire my son. Absolutely love this channel & wot u do…Ur knowledge & geekiness about cars is fantastic…you’re actually quite like me in this way…Also love you’re sense of humour. We also share the same taste in cars, range rovers, jags n that. Wish u all the best & lots of luck for 2024 Cheers D
“With no top gear how am I meant to get my car fix” my mate said. Well I sent him here now I can’t even have a chat with him because he’s glued to this channel. 😂
Well done Matthew, like you I to am a fan of the Jaguar X Type. We did infact used to buy a new one every 2 years for our estates manager, and he absolutely loved them. Yes the X Type was a brilliant car in its day!!!
Thanks, looks good and will hopefully have many miles of life in it. Never owned or driven one, but it was never a Mondeo. So many cars I still want to own, and this is on the list.
Always threatening to get the "strimmer out" or "get the gardeners in". Never remembers 😉 Love all your videos mate. Spot on. I'd also definitely buy a car from you, very genuine, which is a rarity.
i bought one for 600, one for 350 and another for 600. Each were diesel. All fixed up cheaply and became dependable daily drivers. If someones looking for a cheap run around these jags are the stuff.
I only come here for some 20 plus minutes' of calming down... well done! OH, BTW... I've had a 2.5V6 / 2005 plate x-type estate, for 15 years'... an amazing car!
So pleased you saved another X-Type. It looked fantastic in the end. I know they were never the coolest of cars but I’ve always loved them and a little sad I never got to own one. One cautionary word though Matt, if you ever review another car from this marque and DON’T refer to it as Jag- whah then I’m unsubscribing 😂 It always makes me smile when I hear you say that. Happy Christmas! 🎄
Keep up the good work saving x type jaguars.beautiful cars.i love my 2005 one.just had a bit of work done on it.the sills and suspension arms.but worth every penny.
Outer sill always looks ok because there plastic covers had the estate version and to be honest pound for pound was a brilliant car Keep the videos coming Matt 👍
DPF . That will need to be done if you are pootling around town at low velocity. Clogs it up. . Doing longer journeys and on mainly 50 to 60mph roads . Definitely the diesel engine knocks the petrol into a cocked hat!!.
X type. Gets a bad rap ! It's a very good quality car. Your information is incorrect. The engine is chain drive not Belt drive.Post a video get your facts right!!
as 2.5 v6 owner, gotta disagree sadly, the petrols sound 10 times better, and with AWD, you can launch it to great effect, the v6 engines also have that pedigree, with input from porsche, cosworth and of course jaguar with that VVT, the diesels are basically just ford units through and through sadly, and are also FWD only...
I'll be honest at £3495 its a steal. I was on the market 6 month ago for a 4k nice different saloon. I looked at a few X types and none were we good and as cheap. When I am looking for my next car even 140 miles away I would be wanting to look at your stock. You prepare your car's to such a standard that most dealers don't. I've done most of the work on my car based on my cars on what you do to prep them and I'm loving the results. I have bought 2 cars (both Skoda superbs) since I subscribed and every time i think "what would matt be checking". Only reason I have had 2 is one got wrote off. Love the content mate and can't wait till telly comes calling ;)😊
Fantastic video, thanks so much for all the knowledge, tips and advice clearly delivered.. I just found your channel as I'm looking to buy an X-Type for my occasional trips back to the UK. So much car for the money and 3-3.5k is my budget so this video is superb. Tyre's and MPG way better than my old Transit! I might be getting in touch sometime soon, great price and worth all your hard work identifying and putting right all the issues. The alloys look great!
I used to hyave x-type. Racing green colour. I bought it because it was a Jag and it actually looked good. And there the positives end. It ended up being my most expensive car that comes to repairs and maintenance. Let's just say the heated seat broke twice during my 1,5 years of ownership.
Lovely car, if I'd got the money I would buy it off you, love jaguar x type, had a few over the years, had to get rid of my last one about 2 year's ago, great video,as always, keep up the good work, cheers, Dave
I just paid £1900 for an X-type 3.0 Sovereign AWD with six months MOT left. Only had it a week so still trying not to keep pressing the brake pedal thinking it's the clutch! It's a beautifully appointed car but way smaller than my previous Volvo S80 D5 SE Lux, so getting in and out is more difficult as a disabled (osteoarthritis) person. Vehicle tax was £710 (£745 using direct debit - FFS) and I'm dreading the fuel bills. The ride quality is nowhere near as luxurious as my ancient 1988 XJ6 though and, (dare I say it?), a bit Mondeo-ish. Another thing I've noticed is that (despite its claimed 210bhp) it's very relaxing/quiet to drive slowly... because I'm 63.!!
2.2d is an awesome engine especially with the 6 speed auto like yours. Super reliable cars The 2.2d is the ford mondeo st engine. Its also in the xf in a tuned form. Done its a 4k car
This engine was fords engine and not used in XF 2.2 ,that was a Peugeot/Citroen 2.2 4 cylinder. Was a lot more pokier than the ford even tho it was in a bigger and heavier RWD.
@bandiflip it's the same core engine. PSA made minor alterations only. E.g changing from chain to belt and abit more power but it is 90% the same engine.
I have owned three of these from new all 2.0 diesels, first was a 2004 estate, then there was a 2006 saloon and finally a 2009 facelift model in SE trim which was gorgeous. Was sad to part with it in 2014 and it was the longest I had ever owned a car. It is the only model still on the road. Watch out for rot in the sills, they are notorious for it.
Great car. Hope you had a lovely Christmas. No I don't like 1 finger waves, it always like they're really wanting to turn their 1 finger round. Happy New Year Matt Mark x
I had a 2.2 diesel. 2007 reg. Paid about £3k for it when I was about 7 years old. Sold it for for £1800 when it was eleven years old. Never had anything other than wear and tear tyres, break pads etc. Over them years. Best money I've ever spent on a car.
Rule of thumb to convert temperature double it and add 30 , or subtract 30 and half , so 80 Fahrenheit would be 25 ( within 1 or 2 degrees ) By the way that one finger wasn't a wave 🙂 Another excellent video.
It's great to see that you saved another one. I don't agree with Autotraders' valuation . For 3.5 k you are buying a sorted car with a decent level of luxury. Seasons greetings Matt
I had a 58 plate one with the 2.2 litre diesel in sports model with black quilted leather seats etc ! As much as a liked the car I had constant issues with it going into limp home mode, I had the re generating thing done etc ! Terra clean or whatever it was known as but still same issue kept occurring, so I sold it after only 12 months and bought a honda civic type r g.t. on a 2010 plate, kept that 4 years and it never missed a beat and never let me down
A Mondeo done properly. Years ago I really wanted on, especially a 4 x 4 estate. But, my wife said (get this) - "we cannot have one because people will think that we have money" - do what - leave it out......
2.2 has a timing belt, the chain that it mentions, is a small chain that just goes round the 2 camshafts to keep the timing, the timing belt only goes round 1 camshaft.
My father had two X-Type one he got with a small ding in the wing for £960. Wing off bay in colour for £60 and drove it for 4 years and 80,000 miles, they were very underrated car and the touches of luxury for the time, leather, wood, cruise etc for a car that wasn't expensive new
I have complete facelift 2.5l V6 awd auto estate with GPS the dark blue,, so rear the car is...all in wood and leather and iron,, almost all people around me love it,,, I just waiting coz the price will explode and still I will never sell it coz classic design Jag with atmospheric V6 in estate?//come on.... ladies and gentlemans it will never happen again ++ the car is amazing to drive in turns, highway 180-200km/h like nothing ok fuel cost is different storie but,, who care... Love your Videos
Wow did you get someone to redo the title music.. Last one had a certain cha cha to it. 😁 As for the Jag, I preferred the late face-lift which a little less chrome just like this one. As always great vids👍
Hi Matt. Have you ever considered offering overseas clients an opportunity to import vehicles from you to their home country? Obviously all countries have various regulations and restrictions which would need to be thoroughly understood, and the logistics to make it happen may be challenging, but it may well be a viable string to your bow. As an example, I would be interested in engaging you to act on my behalf. Say - 4 or 5 collectable type cars with basic spare parts packages for each, packed in a shipping container and sea freighted to the east coast of Australia. It may also be interesting content for your channel.
How to get max trade in price with mat.. matching tyres, clean matching plates, national trust sticker, throw in a worthers original in the centre console and set the radio to classic fm
It's obvious why Matt's channel is growing so quickly, the content is top notch! Keep up the good work 👍🏼
Thank you! Very kind
New aspect ratio is great
Its not just content. It's the absence of ego and lack of forced personality that so many channels suffer from.

looks like the 2.2 se d spec, these were great cars new, i worked at jag when they came out, always said they would be a great buy when older, just watch for the sills on them, you have to look behind the outer sill covers though to check them and underneath too, the 2.0 had issues with the auto box but other than that great cars, if you can find a late sovereign they were loaded to hell with extras on the final run out models, and the sports are good too.
Right about the sills. Loved my 2005 2.0 SE D but was rotten as a pear under the plastic outer covers.
Youll never put me off diesels. 😊. Great to drive. Great mpg
Also Diesels are very drivable with so much Torque.
Indeed, that is my main worry with this car... It's a lovely car though 👍🏻
Same thing happens to the original Volvo XC60! The front wings rot out from inside. I often tell people to get rid of the foam blocks.
Thanks! All the best
Love these jag reviews I've got an X type same year bought it as an Inbetweener and still got it almost 3 years later I'll look after it as long as it looks after me,also got an xf mind and your favourite phrase massively overspent comes to mind.
New music will take some getting used to , but another jaaaaag saved to fight another day , well done Sir
Wish u all the best & lots of luck for 2024
Cheers

“With no top gear how am I meant to get my car fix” my mate said. Well I sent him here now I can’t even have a chat with him because he’s glued to this channel. 😂
Love your channel Matt. Great work
Glad you enjoy it!
Never remembers 😉
Love all your videos mate.
Enjoy watching High Peak Autos living locally I look out for local landmarks whilst he’s out on a test drive.
Great video as usual Matt. Know what you mean about the one finger to thank another driver.😊👍 Wishing you a prosperous New year.
Another blinder - seasonal greetings and all the best for 2024. Looking forward to another year of pure class 👏 Keep on BUFFING
Outer sill always looks ok because there plastic covers had the estate version and to be honest pound for pound was a brilliant car
Keep the videos coming Matt 👍
Top Job, Matt; another car was saved, and I like it. It is a tidy car and should do well for you.
Another brilliant video . Love his presentation style and dry humour
That's a really nice example. I've always liked the X-Type, although the sills periodically need thorough cleaning and checking for rust.
Good to see the channel growing just like the plants in the car park 👍
That is one very nice looking Jaguar now, well done Matt, you’ve rescued another future classic.
Great content as always, happy New Year ❤.
Thanks 👍 happy new year. All the best
The X type won't be a future classic, the S-type will , definitely, because of the Mark 2 retro style ...
Damn it. Was just about to go bed and then saw you've done another Jag video. Thanks Mat, thanks a lot. More Jags please!
Brilliant episode
Thank you
Fantastic video, thanks so much for all the knowledge, tips and advice clearly delivered..
Super reliable cars
The 2.2d is the ford mondeo st engine.
Happy New Year Matt
Mark x
I had a 2.2 diesel. 2007 reg. Paid about £3k for it when I was about 7 years old. Sold it for for £1800 when it was eleven years old. Never had anything other than wear and tear tyres, break pads etc. Over them years. Best money I've ever spent on a car.
Rule of thumb to convert temperature double it and add 30 , or subtract 30 and half , so 80 Fahrenheit would be 25 ( within 1 or 2 degrees ) By the way that one finger wasn't a wave 🙂
Another excellent video.
It's great to see that you saved another one. I don't agree with Autotraders' valuation . For 3.5 k you are buying a sorted car with a decent level of luxury. Seasons greetings Matt
Should sell easily all major issues addressed Christmas was cancelled at our house I had COVID happy new year Matt can't wait for January
Fab mate another great video well done
Hi matt, great job on the jag, looks great, from marty in Belfast northern Ireland
Don’t mind that rusty old jag the colour of your Range Rover is excellent and very unusual, great looking Range Rover
I had a 58 plate one with the 2.2 litre diesel in sports model with black quilted leather seats etc ! As much as a liked the car I had constant issues with it going into limp home mode, I had the re generating thing done etc ! Terra clean or whatever it was known as but still same issue kept occurring, so I sold it after only 12 months and bought a honda civic type r g.t. on a 2010 plate, kept that 4 years and it never missed a beat and never let me down
IIRC the reason you found a Ford switch is because under the skin it's a Mondeo.
Just started subscribing, very, very entertaining with just the right amount of humour, well done Matt, keep it up.
Awesome, thank you!
Lovely old Jag, but what have done with the intro music...🤥
Hope you and the family had a great Christmas Matt, and some well deserved time off! Great video as always.
Selling my Jaguar X-Type tomorrow morning
Wow did you get someone to redo the title music.. Last one had a certain cha cha to it. 😁
As for the Jag, I preferred the late face-lift which a little less chrome just like this one. As always great vids👍
Easily the best channel on TH-cam. Fantastic content Matt keep it coming mate 👍
Wow, thanks
Ford switch here, heater is extremely hot,yep because they’re both Ford! It’s basically a mondeo with a jag shell on top 😊
How to get max trade in price with mat.. matching tyres, clean matching plates, national trust sticker, throw in a worthers original in the centre console and set the radio to classic fm
The close up of the front discs look like they have a lip on the outer edge all ready. Wheel refurb and general refurb looks good though
