- Jaguar’s return to the compact executive car market, with a car intended to double Jaguar’s worldwide sales, the X-Type marked a number of ‘firsts’ for the marque. At launch it was considered ‘the most important Jaguar ever’, but what do you think?
Here we feature a top of the range Jaguar X-Type Sovereign, which I recently bought. I share buying and cleaning the car up, followed by a brief history of the X-Type and why it remains such a significant car in Jaguar’s history.

Thank you very much for the video. Finally the X-Type is getting proper attention. Had one for over ten years. What a good family car. Felt and look so special. Wonder why people keep mentioning the Mondeo . Never heard or read a DB7 was an XJS, or, how about how much of our genetic code we share with other animals, yet the conclusion is always different with the X-Type. So many brands interested then in letting down what I found and excellent package. Ours was the 2.0D.

I used to have the 2.2 Sports Premium on a 2008 - exactly the same (ie all the toys) but with carbon fibre instead of that rather dated walnut! Fantastic car.

Great video! Having had 2, my current one is a facelift 2.2 auto and it's pretty much perfect for my needs. What a comfortable and capable car. Just brilliant on a long motorway journey too.
I too wanted a facelift 3.0 Sovereign, but not with that car tax 😂 still, if they're good enough for Her Majesty (on her 3rd), then good enough for me!

Love the X-Type, have had my 20.D facelift saloon for just over 2 years now and its brilliant, does nearly 60mpg on a long run and averages 45 with mixed urban and open road driving, if you push it hard its still difficult to get it under 35mpg. Another great thing with the 2.0D is that its only £190 per year road tax too, thats less than the £230 I used to pay for my old 1.6 Zafira! and no comparison with ride quality and long journey comfort. Great video and very well balanced opinion without feeling biased.

My 07 sovereign has the classic J gate auto leaver, they must have changed it for the facelift. Must admit I love the classic J gate, and my cars been a solid performer for years. Very underrated.
I have a 2.2 manual that I use for work 122k runs like new,just fitted new discs and breaks all round for peanuts. Love ur vid

Using a 2006 2.2 diesel sport estate has a stop gap car 6 speed Manuel been absolutely faultless would love a mint sovereign estate though! Ps that leaper has to go through 😝

Nice vid about the X type estate! I bought one 8 years ago and still have it. It's a 2008 2.2 diesel sport premium estate and seems to be an interim model with some of the facelift updates. I have had loads of cars in the past, including Mercedes company cars, but this is the nicest car to drive so far by miles! I have had to spend quite a lot on it over the years, but it has always been worth it. I am retired now so funds are rather restricted but every time I think of my options..... pay up or scrap it. Pay up has always won so far!

The thing is, I think you'd need to spend a fair amount more replacing the X-Type with something you would be as happy with... if there is an alternative even out there. I am quite the same with my Rover 75 Tourer; the car drives brilliantly and I really enjoy it, so I keep spending at every MOT to keep it on the road - it has been a very loyal servant! Great video! Just bought the 2.2d estate on a 59 plate. Don't really care about the detractors calling it a Ford in a frock. I've owned several Fords, and they have all been great cars. Yes, there are obviously a few quirks regarding the sills being prone to rust, but the model I've purchased isn't too bad considering the age of the vehicle, and so far, it's a lovely, comfortable drive, punching way above its weight in terms of comfort and performance.
Indeed, the reason I finally opted for the Xtype, was the fact that the repair costs would be realistic for a second hand car. As we know, BMWs and Mercedes can be had for reasonable prices on the second hand market, but the parts and repairs are still eye-watering.

my last car was an x-type, no complaints, even though it was a bit of a dodgy buy in the first place, and i never got around to fixing the air-con, great car, and people mistook it for the XJ saloon anyway.

Only real issues with these X types (I bought my 2.2 Soverign estate 221k for £850) is the rust. Look at the rear sills under the plastic outer trim and look under the rear window seal by lifting up the window as that tends to rust and eventually rusts the boot lid. A wire brush and some rust converter will do the job and failing that these cars are weldable and well worth doing. Do not let the rust put you off just get under the car and clean it up lol

Nice Jag-Wagon, I love the front facia styling. The interior is beautiful, love the black leather. I imagine it is a bit heavier than the coup, and somewhat under powered at 130HP for the 2.0L Diesel engine.

The 145bhp 2.2D has a decent amount of power, but if you are after the smooth Jaguar driving experience then the 3.0ltr V6 is best. Do stay tuned to the channel and thanks again for watching.
They're very good. I had Rover 800's for over 20 years, one after the other.
Of course, parts for them are getting had to find and I wanted a change... The 75, has really captured me as such, but was still unsure what to replace the 800 with.
I settled on a 2004 X-type Estate, 2.5 SE auto.... It does a fantastic job of towing the caravan and plenty of room for the dogs in the back.
Sure, it's had a few faults here and there, but at least parts are fairly cheap and easy to find.
I've had it 4 years now and still love it.

talking of rover 25's, i took my XJ6 saloon to brands hatch for a track day (about 10 years ago), that's 20 minutes of the scariest fun i ever had, the XJ doesn't really like turning, so second time round i managed to avoid going over the kerbing at the bottom of paddock hill. i actually went faster on the motorway getting there, although the jag's acceleration is pretty good, you always get to a corner before top speed. i got lapped twice by a rusty rover 25 is the point of the story.

Driving around Brands Hatch will have been fun in any car, and the XJ6 would have been great on the straights but I imagine there was a fair bit of 'roll' in the corners. Whereas, the Rover 25 would have had you in the corners! I own a Rover 200Vi and Rover 25 GTi, both of which have appeared on the Channel so do check the videos out if you fancy them. These are great cars.that one has a great spec and colour.they allways looked classier than the competition.2 points to mention tho,the early x types did actually have the j gate transmission and jaguar have made 4 cylinder jaguars before,way back in there past with the old 1.5 models.cant agree with the engine choice tho sorry lol.they need a creamy smooth petrol v6 in them.i love jags,had lots over the last 20 odd years.3 xj40s,2x300s,2x308,2 series 3s.on my 2nd x350,a supercharged one.fantastic car.had a xf but the modern ones just arnt jag enough for me anymore.have lost the style,outside and in.another great video,lookin forward to more.👍

Totally agree about the petrol engine cars being 'true Jags' and they would be my preference, but not those registered after March '06, otherwise it is £500 per year UK road tax! Thanks for watching.
@@cornishcarcollectors this roadtax is a rite con.thats why me super v8 is a o4.your right,diesel ones didnt have the j gate,just petrol ones.me xf was a v6 diesel just because i refuse to pay the 5 or 6 hundred it would have cost for a v8 version.it was a nice car,had it for 7 years.i just much prefer earlier ones,i hate this suv fad everyone has at the moment.bring back the proper saloon car i say lol.

I almost bought an S-Type during the summer but bottled it at the last minute, simply down to the possible astronomical repair bills. The X-Type is a really sensible entry into the world of Jag ownership as it really shouldn’t cost too much more on maintenance than the related Mondeo Mk3. Or maybe I’ll just buy a Titanium spec Mondeo Mk3? 😀

Nothing wrong with the underpinnings of this car as it was based on a great car itself. Love these cars and I have been thinking about picking one up but I am not really liking the Jaguar on the bonnet..

I just bought a 2007 X-type Sovereign 3.0 AWD and the road tax was £710 (£745 if paid monthly by direct debit)..!! I disagree with the bonnet motif though. To me they just look out of place on these smaller cars.

Seriously underrated by the link to Mondeo and super cheap now, but a total commercial failure for Ford owned Jaguar. Taking on BMW, MB and Audi with their most competitive products in the toughest segment was unwise, and XE will be the same. Only the new niche EV Jaguars might stand a chance... but at an altogether different price point.

Yes yes a great car! But it's should of been rear wheel drive as Jaguars away where.

Sad that the XType was not replaced in 2009. I would table ?the XType was (is) the most popular Jaguar ever? Judging by numbers of 15 - 20 year old XTypes still in fine fettle on the roads, it is by leaps & bounds the 'greenest" ever Jaguar.

X-type failed competition with German cars, because she was equipped either with underpowered engines, or with an AWD transmission, which also didn't add to the speed and reliability. 2.2D is really the best option.

If the X-Type is to be a sought after car of the future then I would have thought the high specification premium or sports models would be the ones to go for, in station wagon or sedan… albeit the AWD sedan would be the one I’d go for, with the 6-cylinder petrol engine.

Being an old fart Jag owner (XJ V12 Sovereign series 3) I just couldn't put up with a diesel rattle from any Jaguar. Sorry chaps ! I would like a 3ltr petrol Sovereign any time though.

There was the sport premium and the special edition XS. I think the sov was a full trim package but tailored for more soft cruising
The X-Type in the US never a 4 banger. (Only 2.5 or 3.0 V6 petrol) never fwd (only 4wd) 2.5 v6 could have a MT or AT.

@@cornishcarcollectors I own a 2003 S-Type 3.0 V6. The biggest difference between our V6s is the engine block in The S Type and Jaguar Heads, along with the ZF 6AT.

The moment that diesel started up, I lost interest completely. It sounds like a tractor - and old tractor at that. I've driven the 3 litre petrol Sovereign, (named by Daimler way back before Jaguar came on the scene), and that was nice enough, but not a real Jaguar
Thanks for the comment David. I do agree, the purist in me had an issue with Jaguar introducing diesels, but this X-Type Sovereign remains a very decent car and entry level Jaguar. Whether it's a real Jag or not, it brought some much needed revenue into Jaguar during the time of production.

Well, I owned two. Heaps of shite the both of them, bag styling and a rather Rover 75 air of a old, cheap, cheap Chinese quality. But I have to say, they did handle well.

Thanks for the comment. Similar to you, I struggled with the idea of Jaguar putting diesel engines in their cars but to stay current and remain profitable they needed to... and, they're pretty good.
The X-Type with the diesel engine is a great car.

@@cornishcarcollectors sorry not a diesel fan other than in boats and don’t think 4 cylinder engines especially diesel have any place in luxury vehicles. I did drive a 2.5 V6 X type back in the day and was super impressed with how it drove. Until then I had assumed it was a nail because all the press was so negative.
