I would have loved to see a Goldberg spear stop a Hulk Up, or something like Stone Cold flipping him the birds into a stunner, just those visuals would have been great.

It's arguable that he was the most recognizable name in the world. He was DEFINITELY bigger than wrestling back then, and probably still, to this day.
The same with Stone Cold Steve Austin. I remember knowing nothing about wrestling as a kid, but sometimes hearing about some guy called Stone Cold Steve Austin.

I will say this about Hogan. He was a major Prima Donna but without him wresting never, and I truly mean never, would have been as big as it is. Because of that I will always respect Hogan for putting in the work to help make the WWF, and professional wrestling as a whole, as big as it became.
Even though he's an asshole he did a lot for the wrestling business. Undisputed legend Hogan is.
Prima donna? Hogan put a LOT of guys over throughout his career. As opposed to the real prima donnas like Andre and Piper who refused to job except for a few times and when they were way past their prime!
I love hogan, but a lot of it was right time , right place. Too be clear, hogan did his part when needed. But the character and position were primed for the run, and vince really made all of it happen.
@@bradrobinson9085 I'm inclined to disagree there. Sure the character was at the right time and alot of credit goes to WWF creative for the character but Hogan's the one that had to do the matches, make the promo's, and perform well enough to get over.
@@christianholbrook2686 Exactly. Vince could not have taken any dumb bodybuilder and gotten the same results. Look at how many of them he tried to recreate the magic with and failed. Hogan got himself over with charisma and the fact that he was ace at working a crowd. There were dozens of similar guys back then, but we wanted to like Hulk. He wasn't made by Vince, he was given an opportunity by Vince and he made the best of it so they both profited. Same with his heel turn in WCW. Dozens of top guys in the industry could have been the third man in the NWO, but only Hogan could make it actually mean something. Maybe 1 or 2 other guys working at that time could have gotten similar results, but it worked so well with him because of his star power combined with the fact that people really, really wanted to hate him at that moment in time. And his mic work was great. People really bought that he had just been in it for the money and that he didn't care about the fans because people already thought that!
There was an element of right place right time involved each time, but it had to be the right person doing the right work as well. Hogan deserves the credit no matter what you think of his personal life.
I like how these videos feel like timeline periodicals, rather than dwelling on politics, workrate, personal opinion, nor relying on rumours and scandal for sensation's sake.

Considering how broken down André was, it was really a feat to get such a memorable main event. Hogan should get some credit for carrying.
Everyone is so busy crapping on Hogan for his idiotic personal life that they can no longer separate the man from the character yet, those same people are usually the ones demanding Chris Benoit be inducted into the HOF. The thing I hate the most is when people say he didn't pay his dues. Nothing could be further from the truth! And they have no idea how drastically he and McMahon changed pro wrestling. We wouldn't have what we have today without them! This is all coming from someone who grew up hating Hogan as a kid, btw!* Even then I found it too cheesy but I cannot deny how massive Hulkamania really was. I saw Hogan at a live event once (1989 or 1990) and the electricity in the building when he came out was absolutely insane! I got up out of my seat and became a massive Hulkamaniac for those few minutes. lol

@Hendrik Schmidt. Yeah, when Hogan was good, he was good. Underrated wrestler, due to his obscene longevity, which culminated in yeeeaaarrrrrs of locks, punches, and clotheslines. A very mundane and lame moveset.That being said, he was a decent wrestler, oozing charisma and nailing promos, for the first decade, or so, of his career. When he bodyslammed Andre, in Andre's latter years, that was all Hogan. He literally had to scoop Andre off his feet, lift his massive girth and weight, and roll him over at the shoulder to make Andre land safely and firmly on Andre's back.
Andre had terrible 3nglish,as well. While the Collossus of the Bosses was always charismatic and loved (😍), his English left much to be desired. Imagine, as awesome and legendary as A the G was, he would have stole the show,every show, if he could cut clean and creative promos in an imaginative and intelligent storyline. This, quite possibly, puts him firmly...comfortably on the throne of the top wrestling talent...the greatest wrestler of all time.

I always loved how Hogan used to look to the crowd for an answer. Jesus Hulk, come on. There's two referee's that are twins. It's not hard. Oh yeah, and when Elizabeth's dragging him to the ring and he's like, "What? What's going on Liz? Where are you taking me? What is it?" Then he sees and it all becomes clear.
Yeah that was funny haha like what could possibly be happening down the end of this isle liz? Then sees savage in trouble in the ring as if it's a sudden revelation lol. Wrestling craziness used to be great

I've always thought those hogan-isms were hilarious!
Vince Jr. kept a very tight control on Hulk after he won the belt, you rarely saw anything of the Hulk on Saturday morning wrestling, he was the draw and if you wanted to see him, you had to go to the shows. I remember the rare occasion he would come on Saturday morning wrestling was mostly a tease, a heel would try to entice the Hulk to fight in the ring, and he would get one leg in the ring, but the heel would run off, than they would announce coming to your town the Hulk and the whomever the heel was that was enticing him to fight.
HULKAMANIA still rules!

I Loved the Macho Man RIP, when I first started watching wrestling in 97 (WCW) Randy Savage was one of my favorites and the first time i "Cosplayed" (without knowing what it was) I dressed as Savage making making home made gear out of old black clothes and using a White out pen to write/draw on details. Savage was a great performer, fair enough he left WWF because they wanted to transition him away from the ring seeing as a hangover of the "old" while trying to build the "New Generation". Glad he did since my introduction to him in the WCW and he could still keep with the best of them.

One thing to keep in mind about the Hogan match formula in the 80's: even though it was pretty formulated and predictable, fans did not see Hogan matches often. He did weekly promos for his upcoming matches, but those were for untelevised house matches. He would do 1-2 TV squash matches per year, but aside from that, and 4-5 SNME programs throughout the year and an occasional Coliseum Video compilation, we didn't see his matches often. That's why the formula lasted so long
This is the ONLY comment I’ve ever seen that mentions that rarified tv appearances Hulk Hogan made. You are SPOT ON when you bring up how he basically did tv promos all year, minus about a handful of televised matches, which were usually on SNME. I still remember how I used to think to myself that we hardly got to see Hogan wrestle on tv lol.
That would be true. That's one reason why Saturday Night's Main Event was a MUST SEE. As a kid I looked forward to SNME just to see Hogan wrestle a match. Good times.
The Hogan - Andre storyline was a HUGE deal when I was 10 yrs old in ‘87. HUGE.

I'm huge Hulkster fan. But Hulk was on steroids throughout the 1980s. He only looked younger in the 1990s because he stopped taking roids after Wrestle Mania 8. I'm still a Hulkamaniac. He gave so much to children's charities and still does to this day. HULK RULES ! ! !

Andre the Giant vs Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania 3 given a -3 star rating??? That was one of the most iconic matches in history. It changed the wrestling world forever. I remember watching it as a kid and it's one of my favorite wrestling memories. Sure it's not the greatest technical match, but it's definitely legandery in the pop it got and the whole excitement of it all.
I remember watching hogan vs andre on TH-cam when I just started watching wrestling (around 2008) and man it gave me goosebumps. Its easy to write hogan, andre and their match off as a «smart fan» in the 2020’s, but it was a damn good spectacle and it was effective. I can still enjoy the match for what it is. Same thing with hogan and warrior

I started watching wrestling around 1990. I remember thinking the Warrior beating Hogan was a passing of the torch because Hogan was really old. When in fact he was 35 and only 6 years older than Warrior.

Great video about Hulk Hogan.
Hulk Hogan was essentially Babe Ruth of wrestling who transcended the sport into global phenomenan. And I always say Ric Flair was the Hank Aaron of wrestling who was consistent and had amazing long career. But Hogan in my book had a greater impact to the casual fans.

I love this bio, but you skipped over a very important part of Hogan’s career and that would be his feud with Paul Orndorff in 1986. It was the first of the many backstabs that was constantly rehashed throughout Hogan’s career.

True. Me too. As a 6-7 year old in the 80s, i always thought anyone who was bald was automatically really really old so i was drawn into trying to figure out how old Hulk was and how the F he could still wrestle and be so big at 55+

Watching this with my 45 year old eyes today I must say it’s terrible! However I was ten when I watched it with my dad and uncles and I thought it was the greatest thing I’d ever seen! Hogan slamming Andre was amazing at the time!
