BW Stevenson was one of the most beloved country singers of my lifetime. His version of My Maria was inspired by the Heavens. Everyone else's version is just a homage, and they all know it.
I agree. This is the best by far.
If I have any criticism at all of this song, it's too short!
Most people may not know this but the drummer on this track is the late Jim Gordon, (Cream, Eric Clapton, "Layla", Joe Cocker, etc)
Jim Gordon was a great session drummer in the 60's and 70's, played on nearly every hit song, just amazing drummer. However, his life spiraled out of control due to mental illness, and he murdered his mother and spent the rest of his life in a prison medical ward. Gordon was also the drummer in the band Derek and the Dominos.

Jimmy was one of the greats. Session drumming legends Jeff Porcaro and Jim Keltner both said that Jim was the greatest drummer they ever knew. Such a tragic life. RIP Jimmy.

Louis Charles B.W. Stevenson (the B.W. stood for Buckwheat). Great song. When it came out the radio stations kids listened to didn't much care what "genre" a song fit in. If it was catchy, they played it. I read that this is now considered "progressive country" or "country rock". You reacted to McArthur Park, and they played that on the same station where we heard the Beatles and the Beach Boys and Roy Orbison, along with B.W. Stevenson. Thanks for another great reaction to a great song!
What you said is true ! The radio station that I listened to as a kid when I was eating breakfast played all kinds of music 🎵🎶 The Beatles then this song, My Maria then maybe the Four Seasons. We loved all kinds of genres! ❤❤
Like so many singers, he died young. But, he wrote several songs that were covered by others over the years. I remember when this song came out is was a huge hit! So glad you two reacted to this incredible song!

Great song! I remember this original of "My Maria" by B. W. Stevenson in 1973. I was not familiar with the Brooks & Dunn version which was done later. Austin Brown & Tim Foust (from Home Free) also did a great cover of this song recently.
The song "Shambala" was sung by BW Stevenson but the band Three Dog Night made it into a big hit. There is part of the Melody that is similar to "My Maria." If you haven't reacted to 3 Dog Night's "Shambala" you must!

Stevenson was from Dallas and is buried in Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas, as is Stevie Ray Vaughn

Graduated highschool when this song was a hit. BW Stevenson also recorded Shambala which Three Dog Night put out first.

B. W. Stevenson actually released his version of the song about a month or so before Dave did. The Stevenson version was very popular…
Daniel Moore who also co-wrote My Maria.Shambala was released by BW Stevenson a few months before Three Dog Night
Brooks and Dunns remake was good but this original was just better. BW’s voice is just bigger and more full. The drummer also did an excellent job driving the song. Great reaction you two.

Love this! Takes me back to growing up in the 70’s 😁 This song was a hit in the early 70’s. We listened to everything! The radio top 40 for a given week would have Doobie Brothers next to Glen Campbell next to John Lenon next to Al Green next to Aerosmith next to Diana Ross next to......BW Stevenson!! 😁

I've always loved this song. The only problem for me is that it's too darn short. I always wish it would go on for a few more verses.
My high school music teacher ('74-'75) had gone to high school with BW, and in mixed chorus we sang much of his catalog, including Shambala. I sang this song competitively, and took it to state placing 3rd at the state competition. The Brooks & Dunn version changed very little of BW's arrangement due to how perfect this arrangement is. RIP BW...gone too soon.

Stevenson died following heart valve surgery after developing a staph infection at the age of 38.
Another great song choice. A good soulful, cross-over country/rock tune that sounded great coming out of an AM radio in the '70's.

There's a current version of this song playing on the FM alternative stations..Funny thing is, it sounds just like BW's version. I've always liked it because I had a hot Latina girlfreind named Maria once, but I couldn't get her to live here with me in the states and I was In Mexico on a 90 guest pass...(sigh) The best 3 months I've ever had.
