I just booked my first student a day after following your advice about lowering my price in the beginning! I think its great advice to have a long term student package like you said. I am based in Taiwan and am trying to transition from in classroom teaching to online so your videos were really helpful. I have subscribed!
I was curious about one thing.. Have you ever tried teaching a class from your phone like from the Skype app? Or perhaps from the Itlaki app? (not so great reviews in the app store)
Hey glad you found it useful. I do all my lessons the Skype app on my phone with a tripod while typing on my laptop (my laptop is too slow for Skype). I've never used Italki classroom as it's not fit for purpose. You can't share docs or even type to the student!

Hi David, I've been teaching on Italki since June and have been so anxious about putting my prices up (I'm at the point where I am booked up in advance). This video was so helpful, and the long term students discount package idea is a great idea! I've been worried about upsetting loyal students. Thanks for the great advice David.
I've only been on for two months, but with the coronavirus every one is home and my schedule is crazy. I taught 100 lessons last month. And I also have a full time job! I am still at my initial price, but I really need to change, both because I need to attract less new students, and because I am way below the market for one of my languages. (I teach Japanese as well as English and the hourly rate average is around $16 and I am at $10. )
Hi David, thank you very much for your guidelines, you walked me through this new Italki experience actually. I am at the point of raising my price, but I am not sure how to keep discounted prices for all the more frequent students, apart from the packages that not everybody buys. Should I create a specific lesson category for the regular ones? Thank you for your help :)
Hi Veronica, yes exactly! That's what I did - a long term student discount package and just make sure students know to book it. One watch out is that some new students may immediately book the long term one! I took it off my profile about a year ago as most of my lessons are booked via my website now (which is much better as you can add more functionality you want! Italki is quite limited! I have Ebooks in the video description that I have written since these videos, they have further info and lesson material
David can you give some more resource on the long term students discount package, I feel that it is a good strategy but not wuite understand it totally , is there a name for it for this strategy?
I talk about it it one of my Ebooks in more detail. Basically you just set up a new package on Italki at a lower price called Long Term Discount, and add some sort of detail that students can use it after 10 lessons. I only have it on mu website now.
Hey man! Great video!! I just wanted to ask - if I wanna teach can I use my phone for classes instead of a laptop? I know that the sign up process can only be done with a laptop
Thank you for your insights!! Are very helpful. Just wanted to know, how long potentially does a good course last. I heard you mention that you’ve had students for about a year... ... are these regular English or Business students? Please let know!! Thank you. Keep up the good work!!
Hey, I don't use courses. Radical right. I've had some people for 3 years now. Although with some (especially Business English and Pronunciation) I follow a series of topics relevant to their needs, it's not a course and students do not want that, it's not a classroom and they aren't starting from scratch. B2 to C2 don't need courses! It's all about working collaboratively with each student as an individual to work on what they actually need, not on what a textbook tells them.
Here's a question for you David. Realistically, how long does it take to get students (assuming pricing, experience, etc. is favorable)? Thanks. BTW, if you like to eat something sweet...buy some cajeta de membrillo (quince paste), if you haven't already. It's very delicious, goes great with cheese.
I've never had an issue getting students to be honest. Right from the beginning my schedule was pretty much full, probably because of the initial low price. Once you have some great reviews, you can highlight these on your profile so they are more visible. IMO it's a combination of your video, reviews, honesty on your profile and pricing. The video is SO important. Many videos I see are 'too' professional and it's obvious the teacher is purposely speaking slowly and using hand gestures, which I see as patronising. Students want a teacher who speaks and acts naturally as that's the kind of conversations they will have in real life. I'm going off on a tangent!
as i was thinking time to get to the other video, you in the video said " dont forget to click that like button" oh right i probably should xDDDDD clicked and moved on hahaha

yes as long as you have some sort of tripod for your phone so it's vaguely professional
