For you Non-residents wanting to draw a top tier unit in Utah, if you're just getting started, here is the secret... Figure out how to live to around 200 years old, that's about how long it will take if your just starting out :D
My son and I drew buck deer tags this year. It'll be his first hunt - he's thirteen. But he's hunting on a Trial License, so he's not done Hunter's Ed - the stipulation is that he just has to hunt with me (a licensed hunter). I'm not sure how much he'll like it, so we'll trial it this year, and then he can do Hunter's Ed whenever if he does love it.
Wishing I came from a hunters family. I don’t even have friends. I’m new and I have no idea where to start. I have the riffle and gear but the permits are so intimidating. This is a great video but definitely not for beginners. There’s a lot of terminology I don’t understand. Do I need to apply for a draw? What’s the point if as a newbie I don’t have points? So I might not get a tag? What does OTC mean? Are those guarantee permits? and why would someone pick one over the other draw vs otc
If you want to hire a teacher of all things hunting - guns - ammo - Bullets and reloading, then I am open to that and I am from 1978 a professional hunting guide from the Pacific NW to Alaska. I am a custom rifle builder and advanced reloader. In Oregon you can buy deer and Elk tags over the counter for general hunts The classroom is the forest of the Pacific NW - You pay for the gas, and we can talk about pay for me as a teacher.
I find it odd that people have the gall to invite people to other states to hunt. Hey, why don’t you just show up to my in laws house this weekend, they have plenty of food.
Thank you so much for sharing this great information. It's always good to listen to you Trail because you are so knowledgeable and making it easy to understand God's Blessings On all your adventures
Is goHUNT planning to put the proposed tags allocated in April? Also, one thought. If you apply for any hunt where there is only one tag. It will be a random bonus point draw only. There won’t be a split of half of the tags to top bonus point holders. Great information Trail!
Also you are correct, if there is an odd number of permits the bulk will go to max point holders. If there is only one permit for a hunt it will be randomly allocated in the draw
@@trailkreitzer9163 however, utah doesn't keep a list of alternates for the bonus point draw and the regular tag draw. thus, if someone turns in a tag it goes to the next alternate that is not necessarily nor not likely to be a point holder in the highest group. So bonus point tags that are turned in go to the next alternate that is not likely who would have been next in line from the bonus point draw. So utah doesn't really 100% honor their 'half the tags go to max bonus point holders' rule in the end after tags are turned in. just a random side note. :)
Great video, I was wondering If I get an otc archery any bull tag, is that also valid to hunt spikes in the spike-only units? Hope that makes sense, thanks.
The previous comment is correct. If you buy an OTC archery general season elk permit it is valid on both the any bull and spike units. The archery gen season elk permits are unlimited. The any weapon (rifle) and muzzleloader permits must be bought for either any bull or spike units. Hope that helps, best of luck!
OTC Bison tags exist and also if you turn your tag in 30+ days in advance you will get your points you had before the draw but will not get a point for this year since points are only awarded for unsuccessful application or purchasing point.
@@lukebonagurio4503 Yes you can buy a license for the nine mile unit OTC july 11th. but you have to pack in a long ways or float the river and hope the bison are in there.
Hey Dave, thanks for reaching out with this! We do not re-calculate our odds based on current tag cuts as there are more outstanding variables that could greatly impact the predicted odds - Applicant distribution due to tag cuts for example. We will have some more information about this in our upcoming Application Strategy articles for Utah that will be published soon. Thank you!
If you are a nonresident you can apply once for each of the once in a lifetime species. A resident must pick one once in a lifetime species and cannot apply for all of them. If you are a resident and are able to apply for all OIL species I suppose consider yourself lucky 🤷♂️
If you buy a gen season archery elk permit you can hunt spike only units and any bull units. If you buy a rifle or muzzleloader gen elk license you must pick either any bull or spike and you’d only be able to hunt the applicable units for that specific elk. You cannot buy both a spike and any bull permit in the same year. Meaning you could not buy a spike any weapon or a muzzleloader permit and a any bull any weapon or muzzleloader permit. You also couldn’t buy a gen archery elk permit and a spike or any bull any weapon or muzzleloader permit Hope that helps!
I am from Alaska then was seriously looking to Hunt Utah now with this FUBAR Points system a hunter must build points before winning a game tag it isn't worth my time to come to Utah to look over the area for scouting and spending years applying for tags and never sure to get a tag, Well time to look into Idaho hunts.
That is what I expected hearing a points system is in place. Not worth my time road traveling from Alaska to even search up hunting areas when a tag isn't a sure deal to draw. Plan has changed look to Idaho now for hunting because I also own jet boats.
Is this a joke? Letting populations run wild is much more cruel because it results in mass starvation and disease. And there are millions of animals killed every year to sustain agriculture, so you're likely killing animals to sustain vegetarian and vegan diets too, you're just letting someone else do it for you. And those deaths are much more grotesque than animals dying to hunters.

Great video! Very clear explanations. Now I'll just have to watch it 50 more times to understand the incomprehensible system that Utah has.

All of the animals died in Utah. Try great states such as Wyoming and Idaho they will welcome you with open arms😂
Not Idaho, maybe Wyoming.

Yeah we will do an article and link the UDWR recommended permit number for each hunt. I’m hearing they will release it approximately April 5th.

Wait I have to pay with no guarantee that I’ll get to hunt? And have to pay every year I want a chance?
Sounds to be a total FUBAR system where the state rips off hunters' money.
I'm changing over to look at Idaho now and screw that idea of Utah hunting.
Is the archery otc tags unlimited?
Does anyone have a suggestion on a good guide service near the

Can I hunt Utah Elk Archery with a Crossbow ?
Will go hunt update the draw odds for insider, once Utah releases the permit numbers in early April?

If there are 3 permits for Non resident, how many are bonus vs preff? I always hear different answers.
With three permits, two will go to high bonus point holders and one will go random. That’s a change from recent years.
