@ElectroBOOM , I was building one of these detectors for my thesis. Basically hooked up Colpitts oscillator output with street loop as inductance, feed it to microcontroller counter input through some conditioning, and efectively measuring frequency deviation instead of amplitude. It typically runs at about 80kHz (+/- 50kHz) and it shifts frequency about 2kHz when car passes. But it's sometimes done also trough amplitude.

Nice. Back when I was in school, the electrician who taught year 1 installed/maintained these, traffic lights, and streetlamps for the city for 20 years before he went to teaching full time. Very smart man, born in Jamaica. He has a great sense of humor. Also, that man could troubleshoot _any_ circuit you threw at him.

Fun fact. Some car manufacturers install RFID tags on to the underside of the vehicle body for tracking and sequence control in the factory. They are a challenge to read against the metal of the vehicle body, let alone from ground level so nothing to worry about assuming they have not been removed/fallen off already. Number plate recognition is more practical for 'tracking' although fooled easily with false plates.
tip for the battery powered scope: you could use the space between the powwer supply and the motherboard to make a 220v / 110v battery pack using litium ion 9v batteries. than this batteries ould be pluged directlly into the DC line, without havind to be pass into the AC-DC transformer. for a final touch you could use a soldiering machine to make two holes: one for the USB recharging port and another for a swith, that would switch the power input from the batteries or from the AC city power

Reminds me of a fair their organized in my city, where they blocked off an entire street for the fair with a food truck. They placed the food truck across all the lanes and their sensors on one side of a major intersection. I work in the parking industry. We use the same loops in a simpler way to control automatic gates in a parking garage. A typical setup consist of two loops, one for arming the ticket dispenser or paystation that goes in front of the gate arm and the other loop is under the gate arm so as to close the gate after a car drives over the loop. With an extension cord you can easily test the loops in a garage since there will usually be a wall outlet nearby. Fun fact: these loops are built for a wide surface area like a car and is not meant for motorcycles and bicycles so I would see often people would ignore the warnings and try to ride in quickly behind a car only to get smacked in the face.

My dad got me hip to loop detectors (as they're sometimes called) when I was a kid. In some areas, like a quiet side street, perpendicular to a main road, if you drive back and forth over the loop detector, it can help make traffic lights trigger faster. Some people think flashing your headlights is the key, but that's just BS if there is a loop detector in the street. I was going to do a write-up about how to hack a left turn lane, but ElectroBOOM got it right. Just hover over that back-most sensor(s) and you can prioritize your left turn and make opposing traffic wait. Taught myself that one. Some light-weight non-ferrous motorcycles have trouble activating loop detectors, and having ridden some of these bikes, I've occasionally had to blow through red lights when the cycles wouldn't change after several minutes, or encourage the person behind me to move forward over one. I believe that old-skool TH-camr KipKay recommended mounting a strong magnet to the bottom of your bike, but I never tried that, and just bought beefier bikes instead. 😃

I work in the parking industry. We use the same loops in a simpler way to control automatic gates in a parking garage. A typical setup consist of two loops, one for arming the ticket dispenser or paystation that goes in front of the gate arm and the other loop is under the gate arm so as to close the gate after a car drives over the loop. With an extension cord you can easily test the loops in a garage since there will usually be a wall outlet nearby. Fun fact: these loops are built for a wide surface area like a car and is not meant for motorcycles and bicycles so I would see often people would ignore the warnings and try to ride in quickly behind a car only to get smacked in the face.

My dad got me hip to loop detectors (as they're sometimes called) when I was a kid. In some areas, like a quiet side street, perpendicular to a main road, if you drive back and forth over the loop detector, it can help make traffic lights trigger faster. Some people think flashing your headlights is the key, but that's just BS if there is a loop detector in the street.
I was going to do a write-up about how to hack a left turn lane, but ElectroBOOM got it right. Just hover over that back-most sensor(s) and you can prioritize your left turn and make opposing traffic wait. Taught myself that one.
Some light-weight non-ferrous motorcycles have trouble activating loop detectors, and having ridden some of these bikes, I've occasionally had to blow through red lights when the cycles wouldn't change after several minutes, or encourage the person behind me to move forward over one. I believe that old-skool TH-camr KipKay recommended mounting a strong magnet to the bottom of your bike, but I never tried that, and just bought beefier bikes instead. 😃
