Smooth Jazz is sometimes labeled Contemporary Jazz, fusion...just love it! Dave Koz, Gerald Albright, Eric Marienthal, Jeff Kashiwa, Mindi Abair, Vincent Ingala David Sanborn etc..sax players. Thanks Jay for this lick!!
My Better Sax alto just came in and it's AMAZING. Can't wait for a bari version, I can wait for a tenor to come out for now. Practicing this on my new alto. Can't say how much I love it!!!
@@georgeluna5845 If you want an in depth review, wait until any of the sax youtubers put out a review. I have been playing for about a 2 and a half years on a jean baptiste. For me I got slightly better control of the sound for upper register, not super crazy about the finish but i can tolerate it, the case is lacking as my old case is larger and I can hold my sheet music when I go to lessons, has a nice warm tone, indent in the pearls could be a bit wider, kinda miss the palm key F# still can't get used to alt fingering. Didn't bother with the reeds and mouthpiece it came with as I like my Selmer S80 C* with 3.0 vandoren reds.
I don’t have a Better Sax but I do play alto sax and I love it even tho I’ve been playing for 2 years ur just soo god at it and I love jazz music it SLAYYYS
Loved your improvisation. I want to do that too, but it seems so far to get that good. Your sound and choice of licks were so great and seemed effortless. Ok, you just motivated me to start playing again…I hope to find a better path to learning what you just demonstrated rather than getting pulled into other music that’s not interesting
Please film your hands, when you can..i do not read at ALL ..i have played for more than 30 years..... Love your vídeos man!!!! If you can, film your hands .... Best regards from Brazil!!!! It may sound foolishy , but after so many years i can read the hands....is It only me.,.....? I've learned a Lot with you...tks
Okay, so I actually slowed the video down and started marking tally in my transcription notebook. You used the Smooth Jazz Lick approximately 32 times within your solo. My God.
To build on this it would be really great if you could do some tutorials on longer passages, say 8 bars, picked from a performance by a modern player or one of the greats. My piano-playing kid has learnt a lot from Adam Maness doing similar sessions on piano (some of which I pinch for sax)
It's interesting that these two ornaments have been used, diatonically, forever in Celtic Trad music. Hitting the lower neighboring note before the target note is called a "tap" or a "strike" in, for example, tin whistle playing. Hitting the note above is called a "cut". Since I play the tin whistle too, I naturally use this ornament on sax, and I think the tap/strike generally sounds way better than a scoop.
Hi, I'm ade from Nigeria.. you've been so helpful, but I'd like to ask why you seldom use solfa during lessons. I'd be glad if you could use it more often
Great video Jay, but I have to be honest my favorite part of the whole video was the look on your face between the example over major. Like you couldn't decide if it was a "too hip", or "too cool"! keep up the great work!
Hy Jay I've been watching your videos for more than a year, its the first time I hear you speaking tonic sol fa. I wish you would teach more on tonic sol fa and reading music. I know you prefer mostly ear training
I counted maybe, 25... do you do private lessons? I love how you break info down. (I play by ear). Just recently signed up for some of your pdf material!
🤯🤯🤯. Man, I’ve been playing for quite a while, but never thought about playing F maj stuff over D min stuff!!! 😱🤔😱 I began playing sax after seeing Mobetta Blues back in 1990!! 🤯🤯 I messed me up on this one Jay!!! Keep serving up deliciousness 👨🏽🍳
Do you like high baffle mouthpieces Jay. I’m so used to Meyers and my Phil Tone that I’m not sure about going to a metal high baffle mp. Phil tone has a new metal mp in collaboration with Theo Wanne that Im wanting to try out.
Tough question I have so many great pieces now. I am really enjoying switching all the time strangely. I’m trying to get more comfortable on pieces that were outside my comfort zone before and that is opening up new worlds of possibilities.
I counted some 8 uses of the actual lick. But there was like 20 semi-licks that started with the same embellishment. Killer playing anyways man, keep it up!
is this the new licc!? well i counted somewhere around 35 smooth jazz licks in there honestly i kind of lost track, but thats what my finger said. nice solo by the way a lot of that lick but niiiceee
Hey Jay, any tips for intonation and tone on high notes and stopping them from squeaking on tenor sax? I bent the octave mechanism on the neck and it partly fixed the squeaking but not fully. I play a vandoren v16 hard rubber mouthpiece with strength 3 reeds if that matters.
Counting until I ran out of fingers! So many good sounds throughout that solo. I don't know whether to go practice ... or take my horn outside and run over it with my truck!
I just have a question about adjusting my octave key the actual thumb key seems to move a lot after noticing how little another sax octave key moved. Is there an easy way to fix this?
Depends on the octave mechanism. My first sax had the same problem, but there was too much play in the mechanism to really do anything about it without specialised tools and good insurance. You could look if there are adjustable parts; one thing would be the vertical rod the pivots, it sometimes has ends that can be bent using a flathead screwdriver to reduce the amount of play.

Wow that arrived fast! So happy you like the horn! Congrats 🎉
How was it shipped ? Who was the carrier ? UPS , FedEx or USPS ? Did you get an email saying it was coming ?Thanks
@@bxsoup Did not receive any notice. It was like Christmas all over again.
I’d be very interested on honest appraisal.

Shoulda opened this with Dave’s smooth version of ur intro lol
HAHA!!! YES!!!
missed opportunity smh
HAHAHA i literally just watched that video
I honestly thought about that.

Absolutely Awesome great great job !!!
Thanks Sir.
Love the Mercy quotes in the backing track.
What a solo!
I could listen to you for hours...
I liked your solo so much that I'm going to (try to) transcribe it! Nice!
Very nicely constructed solo. Great use of space combined with really nice long phrases. Wow.
Thank you kindly!

Ugh....puttin' some SOUL in da BOWL!!! Fantastic playin' brotha man! Listened to that a few times.
Thanks!

the "lick" defintely adds flavor-sounded great!

Great solo , love it 👍🏿
I see you are embracing the teachings of the Chosen One...
Yes
I can't stand the desire of the better sax being available in Canada (Quebec) to buy it!!!
Fantastic lessons Bravo
Glad you like them!
I would definitely be interested in purchasing the transcription of your solo!
Nice solo. You kept it interesting. Too interesting - I lost count of the "lick" and just enjoyed your playing.
thanks

Thank you brother.
Only a true pro can pull off those facial expressions at the correct time 😉 excellent!
Will there be a silver lacquer on the bettersax soon? I think that colour looks the best on alto saxes
I ike your sound when you speak.
Which mike do you use?
Hey Jay i counted 6 smooth jazz licks in the song
I think the face you make when you say "smooth jazz" says it all.
what a mouthpice do you use in this video?
can you try a xaphoon in a futur video ?? i'm realy interrested in this instrument like.
Thank you
Eccellente grazie 🤗🤗🎷
Beautiful playing, Jay!
yessir licks

@@bettersax Ok. Great to know! Thank you!
If you were to continue down to the root of the scale, what would your embellishment note be? Still flat 3rd?
I like Blues and Jazz.
I counted 42. Is that right?
I counted some 8 uses of the actual lick. But there was like 20 semi-licks that started with the same embellishment. Killer playing anyways man, keep it up!
I counted 6 of the licks I believe Jay. Sounding great!
Beautiful
Jay, what mp/ligature comes with the sax?
Sounds Great! 😎🎷
Hi Jay, what mouthpiece are you using? Thanks.
Jody Jazz jet 7
Thanks
Yeah Jay!!
is this the new licc!? well i counted somewhere around 35 smooth jazz licks in there honestly i kind of lost track, but thats what my finger said. nice solo by the way a lot of that lick but niiiceee
Rick send me an email to claim your prize. You had the closest guess.
I heard the lick played with the chord tones in there six times. But the same form was there like 25+ times just with different notes
I see you sometimes using a rovner lig. I’ve played a basic rovner dark lig forever. Do you use/recommend the versa or the Van Gogh?
I am signed up on your site and I log in ..... How do I find this PDF?????
It's in the Shed course under Licks and Patterns - Smooth Jazz lick
heyyy, veryyy good, nice!
You should check out Roger Manins's smooth jazz tutorials
What camera are you using to shoot the video? Looks really nice.
That’s my old canon 80D
How are we supposed to keep count of how many jazz licks you played!? It was just too awesome to worry about that!!!
Ha thanks.
Amazing

Always relax the embouchure for high notes as we have a tendency to bite as we go higher.
you are soooo good, I look up to you
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie pop?
excelent. Thank u
Counting until I ran out of fingers! So many good sounds throughout that solo. I don't know whether to go practice ... or take my horn outside and run over it with my truck!
The truck idea sounds good... lol
Can do this on tenorsax plz
Love this!😍💖🔥
Nice
Please I'm a beginner. Can you help me with.
I can only play D because it's an alto sax
Thank you.
You don't listen to a lot of smooth jazz?? Well it sure sounds like you do when you play 😉
Man I dig your altissimo 🔥
Exelente!
🔥🔥🔥

Best take it to a technician to adjust.
I counted about 36 but like half of them were like half licks so I wasn’t very sure.
Why wouldn't this just be considered as chromatic grace notes? BTW, beautiful solo.
You can think of them as that too. Whatever works for you.
Who doesn't like smooth jazz!?!?
Respect for the Lick.
25 it is!
Muito bom….
Yeah in the theme of the old show Kreamer
Shoot. I dunno. Maybe a hundred, or maybe three. I’m just hoping for a hat! Lol
I can understand where those grace notes can be a little over done and redundant even though it sounds good ....
I counted 25 of the licks
Three Blind Mice never sounded so good!
No matter how many licks.. smooth jazz will never get you to the center of a tootsie pop...
I counted 27 and two modified licks for a total of 29.
I spy smooth jazz @DavePollack
I counted 26 licks
I counted 12
I have no idea 🎷😝
why is Daniel Negreanu teaching me to play saxophone
I think I counted around 25 🤔
