    A friend of mine has a local outboard shop; these Fastwins and the related OMC 20's and 25's from 40 to 50 years ago will still run strong. Amazing that something designed to last around five seasons before replacement has endured for ten times that long. Given a choice of a motor to bet my life on - a Fastwin with magneto ignition in good tune vs. a 'modern' powerpack-equipped motor my butt goes with the Fastwin every time.

      @russg1801 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW, if you're looking for an old motor to recondition skip the Sportwin 10's and go right to the Fastwin. Not much more weight or fuel consumption but a heck of a lot more power!

    Man I just love these old evinrudes/johnsons. Im only 15 (Almost 16) and am already getting my hands dirty with a 74' Johnson 50hp. Got her for 50$ seized up, got her free, some new rings and gaskets and she will be good to go soon. Soon Il be getting a 71 Johnson 50hp From my gramps, somebody stole the carb off it, easy fix. Also got a 87' 9.9hp, runs great. I love these motors, and I cant wait to hammer the throttle on the 50hp once I get her running!! Keep it up man!

    I'm giving my grandson my 1970 FASTWIN next year. My Dad bought that new in June of that year and it has been great since. We just did regular maintenance plus in 1994 I replaced the coil/point unit and impeller. There was nothing wrong with those parts I just figured after using the outboard for five months every year for that long I should replace those items.

    I once had an 18 HP Evinrude, I think 1960. I thought it used the old 24 to 1 oil ratio, and I always had a bit of oil dripping out of the lower unit, and after I sold it with a 15 foot Crestliner Bucanneer, I was told this
    motor was intended for the 50 to 1 oil ratio. I'm wondering, how likely would the extra oil be the cause of
    the oil drip into the water. I surely enjoy your outboard motor videos, and have enjoyed working on the
    several outboards I've had in my life. Indeed, there is a special bond between a man and his motor!

      @@kodibassInsideoutboards Thanks for reply, I clearly remember the rainbow swirls on the water, but I think I did see the black oil on the lower unit. I thought maybe it was oil blowby in the cylinders, when I bought it used, the shop didn't check the water pump impeller, and the engine seized when I first ran it, so I thought maybe the cylinders got worn. I had them honed and I put in new rings, but still the rainbow oil swirls on the water. Lower unit oil seemed ok, as I recall when I resealed it. This was back in about late1980's, I don't remember the details. Hopefully the new owner I sold it to knew that it needed the 50 to 1 mix & had no trouble with a mini oil slick. I surely do enjoy your channel, kodibass, wish I could hire the outboard troubles that are out of my league to you, but I am in Toledo Ohio, and I know you're not....

      @@kiggsiathis topic has come up a lot in forums. 1963 was the last year for Evinrude to recommend 24:1. 1964 and on they switched to 50:1 and not changing the design of anything. Some people argue that the 1963's and older could have switched too. And then there are people who say, the more oil the better for old engines. So there you have it.

    to get recessed broken bolts out, I take a piece of hollow copper tubing to make a protective sleeve for the hole, then stick my mig welder tip inside of the copper sleeve and weld a stem directly to the broken bolt.. when the slag gets high enough, I weld a bolt to the slag and use that to turn and get the broken bolt out..

    I have an 18 evinrude fast twin i traded for. It runs fairly well but doesn't seem to come up full song. It has the glass fuel bowl on it so i am guessing it to be a 63 year model. It has high speed and low speed air adjustments on the front. Without pulling the flywheel, can you tell which sparkplug wire goes to the top cylinder? One of the plug wires has a silver clamp on it. Also, the glass fuel bowl leaks a bit. Are repair parts available? Or can i put an inline filter on it and eliminate the bowl set up. TIA...

      @@kodibassInsideoutboards thank you! It is possible I have the plug wires reversed. Would it even run if I did? Also, I had thought the motor was newer and have been using a 50:1 mix. I think I better richen that up a tad... Thank you for your help! My first outboard was an 18 fast twin, back in '77. Had it in an old King Fisher fiberglass boat my dad gave me. A couple of years ago, I was looking to upgrade an old aluminum v-bottom to a more stable fiberglass boat. I found a 15' King Fisher boat with a 50 merc on it. The motor hadn't run for a couple of years. I took it to a local boat shop to get it running. While there, I saw he had and 18 Fast Twin on a stand. I really didn't need 50 hp for my fishing needs. So we made an even swap the 50 merc for the Evinrude. He even mounted it on the boat. Of course, I knew he got the better of the
      deal, but I got a far better motor! Those 18 Evinrudes just run and run and run. Thiugh it is almost 60 years old, it starts easily and after being warmed up, will start before it even makes one cycle on the pull rope! I've come full circle. I have a King Fisher and an 18 Fast Twin just like I started with 46 years ago...

OMC only made the 50:1 recommendation on their product line once all the smaller HP motors were retooled. That was '64. @kodibassInsideoutboards  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      On your motor the fuel/oil mix is 24;1 change the lower unit oil & replace the drain/fill screw crush washers. If your motor has the old style tea colored translucent coils they will need replacing, put in a new set of points & condensers , If the spark plug wires are stiff & brittle replace them, If the motor has been setting for a long period might want to get a rebuild kit for the fuel pump. You have a fantastic motor, I have always liked the 18, light weight & peppy. good luck kodi

    Mine is the fastwin I’m needing a gear selector on the side of the motor I thought mine was a 69 but it’s just like this one so I guess mine is a 63 then.

      +Randle Richardson, many evinrude & johnson outboard shift handles will work on your motor, just look at how it attaches & measure the length and depth for clearance along the shift range beside the lower cowl pan. kodi

    I like your attitude.I'm trying to get a 1970 version back on the road for my daughter' tin boat. The only source of parts I have found is marine parts.com They want crazy prices for little parts.$8.00 for a clip or nut?? Anyway, will soldier on.Hopefully mine comes apart easily.(No salt water use)

    I got one few days ago for $450 and put it on my Sears semi V 14 feet boat. It purrs like a kitten and moves it fats. What is the function of the lever in front of the shift lever(without handle); my was broken of so I removed it because it rattled. it's 3 knob model with weird air intake box above carburetor. It may be even older than yours; no model number just serial number

      +StagArmslower, Congrats, You got a great motor, If you are talking about the same lever looking thing as on mine in the video that is a bracket where you would mount the shift cable if you were going to hook it for remote shifting from the front of a boat with a steering wheel instead of tiller operation. kodi

      That's what I suspected after seeing a double reverse hook attached there on some other video. Thanks

    Can you put a water discharge pee hole on these old outboards

    • @9276934

      +Todd Smith , guess I should have watched it all, but can you show how to do the pee tube ?

    • @russg1801
      @russg1801 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need it since they're shooting so much water out the idle relief port at the back. 99% of these motors are being run as tillers and if you can't see that water flow when you're glued to the motor, you have no business piloting a small craft.

    Todd Smith'' Yes its very easy to put a pee discharge on these motors, I will up load a quick video on the procedure in a day or two, its very easy, quick, with basic tools needed,, thanks for watching , kodi

    Scot Mohr, yes your clutch dog ears are rounded, remove the lower unit, & flip your dog, this will take care of your problem, see my vid on 18-20 hp lower unit dis-assembly this will give you the basic break down, your clutch dog is reversible & will solve your issues,,, tks kodi
