They're legendary Pokemon, but are they actually BEASTS when it comes to defeating the 16 Gyms and all the difficult trainers? Wait, that was the last video... let's try this again. Are the Gym leaders gonna be a BIRD course?

I love seeing you get these sponsorships but man they really messed up not making the code JROSE YT 11
So your code isn't working for me.
Does it not work if I have Prime?
Jrose, why not make 3 videos? 3 times the views, add, revenue, etc.?

A totally overlooked Jrose joke.
Idk I thought the joke was that it wasn't significant in whether Articuno would have won or lost
"Totally overlooked" *the top two comments point it out* lol

Both Raikou and Zapdos not getting Thunderbolt in this gen is criminal
Gen 2 sucked, what did you expect?
I thought it was just Raikou but dang, that is complete nonsense. Old gens are olddddd
What's more criminal is removing access to teach Thunderbolt to electric Pokemon that don't learn it through level-up in Gold/Silver, same with Ice Beam, only Crystal you get that tutor outside the Game Corner.
@@cyberdarkturtle6971WHAT DID U SAY TO ME U LITTLE SHIT
Well I would say that, but aside from nostalgia yea gen 2 games kinda sucked gameplaywise
They get it in Crystal, just not Gold and Silver.
Jrose telling the story of the birds and the beasts to the kids. How nice.
I get it instead of the birds and the bees lol
Something that might help you in these runs is learning about Damage Rounding Thresholds. There's a whole formula about it and detailed explanation out there, but the long and short of it is, when a pokemon with a lv ending in 0/3/5/8 attacks, they have better damage ranges then they would at other levels. So if you grind and aim for lv62, for example, you would be getting much better ranges at lv63 due to the weird way damage is calculated
than* they would
I did not know this before. So weird.
Is this true for every Gen or for what gens?
It’s weird he doesn’t know this by now lol
@@pumpingpriest5893every gen is like this yes
it's especially true at a low level
For instance at lvl 62 vs 63, the multiplier related to level n the formula only goes from 26 to 27. It's still a nice bonus but it's more impactful at say level 12 vs 13 where it goes from 6 to 7.
If you keep doing these side by side comparisons in GSC, it'd be cool to see a Mew - Celebi race
we all know mew would win
Looking forward to a Lugia VS Ho-Oh race in Gen 2

Always loved the design of Articuno.
Same here
They did our favorite bird so dirty in this gen :(
Articuno is the most regal of the three gen 1 Legendary Birds. Just like Suicune being the most elegant of the three Legendary cats in gen 2.
(I know some people think they're dogs. They aren't since they have more feline features. I also understand that most people refuse to refer to them as felines and call them beasts instead. I refer to the as cats, sue me. lol)
Same here. No wonder League of Legends copied the design almost exactly
And the sp def
Parents: it's time to talk about the birds and the bees.
Jrose: It's time to compare the birds and the beasts.
Love these threepack challenges, especially in Gen 2. I started Pokemon at the age of 8 with Crystal. The three original legendary trios (birds, beasts and regis) are my favorite legendaries to this day and owning them back in those Gameboy Color and Advance times always felt special. No matter how bad they perform to todays legendaries
I always liked the Birds and their relationship to Lugia, but Entei/Suikune have always been the coolest, IMO (I guess by extension the beasts beat birds for me)
That said, my favorite legendary is probably like Arceus or maybe Zacian (Zacian for style, not really anything else) though Lugia is pretty up there, too
I still have Zapdos and Articuno (from my original Leaf Green save) on Scarlet. I play around with the dogs but I don’t love them. I think I have the Regis in Home but I never liked them. I liked the puzzles but not the Regis themselves…
Moltres' back sprite absolutely slaps this gen, damn. So pretty.
Stop cursing its a sin dude
i really like it’s silver front sprite
@@gregkareem9824 fuck
@@gregkareem9824damn is a pretty casual swear fella, but more importantly cursing in the Bible refers to cursing a person to heck, wishing bad on them, a bunch of bad things but foul language not being one of them. Cursing in today's vernacular is synonymous with swearing, but that wasn't the case when those dudes were writing the story up. Lastly, and by far the most important, you don't get to control others and you yourself sin every damn day. Keep your religion to yourself unless someone asks bro
@rockyevans1584 we can debate this btw
Lugia and Ho-oh would make a fantastic dual run to watch, and much as I want to see it, I'm even more curious about Celebi. It had such an unusual typing and move pool when it showed up, and it would be neat to see how that would play out.
Mewtwo would just be a victory lap, and Mew would likely see no real change. It maintained an even stat spread, so the Special split will barely affect it. The only change it would see is a few new flavors for it's massive arsenal.
Celebi would be interesting because I never used it anywhere and it wasn't available for us in the original games.
I like the idea. Would love to see a gameplay with Celebi, Ho-oh and Lugia in the same video!
6:26 "freezing Clefairy which is pretty solid" - nice job on the pun
Definitely want to see Lugia, Ho-Oh and Celebi runs. Less Mewtwo because we know it's gonna wreck everything. Mew could be interesting but just because it can learn any moves it wants so, while its stats are better than the dogs and elemental birds... they're all the same... BST 600 with 100 in everything.
Anyways. Seeing a Jrose video is always awesome.
If this goes to Gen 3 at any point, would like to see a competition between Mew, Celebi and Jirachi.

Gold and silver wants you to use mudslap for its accuracy lowering. The next 2 trainers use moves that increase in power each time they hit, mortys most dangerous move is hypnosis and is weak to ground. I really dont think people should complain about uts use when its the intended play pattern.
While I do recognize the applications to Whitney and Morty, I can't support this theory, as Bugsy's Scyther nulls Ground moves.
Bugsy's Scyther ignore Ground Type moves thanks to its secondary Flying Typing. So that theory is only kind of true. But people will complain since they want freedom of choice and movement.
Except Mud Slap can't hit Bugsy's Scyther and by the next gym most kids have forgotten that they even have Mud Slap considering how many people got whooped by Whitney. If "use evasion cheese" is what you got out of it that's more likely than not just another completely unintentional mistake on the game design's end, like Brock basically teaching you that status moves are worthless due to his unreasonably large supply of retroactive full heals.
Great to see another upload from you JRose! I’d forgotten how much Articuno’s back sprite looked like a bottle opener.
Maybe, but that's a legendary bottle opener, ok? *I'm joking*
@@Altair1243WAR No joke, it’s an absolutely legendary bottle opener!
His icy wings would keep those brown bottles cool and nice too
I wasn't expecting this video to show up, but I'm very happy it did! This was a very interesting watch, especially considering how differently the birds performed in Gen 2 compared to Gen 1 (I will say, I'm very surprised that Zapdos never learned Rain Dance to make its own Thunder infinitely accurate. It's likely that Jrose wanted maximum move flexibility though, just in case.)
Certainly is interesting to see the difference between the E4 and Red. Articuno being so good at that point and just falling to Red. All it takes is one of Red's pkmn to just destroy
I've been wanting this for a while. Always awesome to see you man, you're a legend.
idc how butt juice the birds have become over time, articuno has always been my favorite ever since 6 year old me really thought that was just a pidgey chillin in gen 1 seafoam islands
If it makes you feel better Moltres and Zappos are still doing mostly well all things considered. Articuno not so much but occasionally has been niche in competitive scenes.
Articuno is possibly my favorite legendary, and is top tier in my books. Moltres is a gangster in GSC though, ever since my CC Nuzlocke where stumbling into it's cave when I did and catching it probably saved my run.
@@derrickbartledoo2680 it’s cuno’s cry for me

Really satisfying to watch this matchup being so much more competitive on Gen2! Gen1 was complete garbage for Moltres. Don't understand some people complaining about Zapdos not having Thunderbolt when it's already outperformed the rest by a mile. Electric+Flying is just such a strong type when it eliminates its ground weakness.
Jrose uploads on a Saturday evening and it's an hour long 👌 straight to the main TV it goes 👌
I'm very surprised about articuno's time because i was expecting it to have the best time of the 3 !
Good job !
A shocking upload, a heated race, and a chilling finish

Nicely done!
Timely video, with Articuno's recent surprise victories in VGC! Great as always :)
Can’t wait to watch this after work!!
The reason articuno very suddenly started doing way better is because it went over a damage rounding threshold when it hit level 70.
Your sponsor was actually very intriguing as I love water but only if it's close to ice cold... I have a water bottle that keeps it cold now but it recently broke. Might have to check out iron flask. It's funny that since you've gotten sponsors I have actually been super into all your promotions of them as they're all things I'd really be interested in (P3, Iron Flask, etc.) You seem to really be in tune with your demographics based on my experience... Keep doing what you're doing my man. Been subbed for a while and no plans to stop watching 😅
Literally only 12 seconds in and I'm already gonna say Zapdos > Articuno > Moltres. Because Drill Peck is OP and Moltres has a terrible learnset. But I don't actually remember off the the top of my head their learnsets in Gen 2 so I might end up being wrong.
Jesus christ, I thought you got sponsored by water for a second there. Like, actual water, the beverage. I was about to be starstruck.
Sponsored by water. You mean like by Liquid Death?
No, water the element. Sponsored by all of the molecules.
Water is not a beverage.
Stop using Jesus name in vain
If you're looking for more triples to do these style of videos, I've thought of a few options:
The three starters, fully or not fully evolved
Ariados/Ledian/Yanma - Bugs with similar BST
Tyrogue/Wooper/Igglybuff - Babies with equal BST
Pupitar/Corsola/Sudowoodo - Rocks with the same BST
Raticate/Dunsparce/Furret - Normal types with similar BST
Ho-oh/Lugia/Mewtwo - All the legendaries
Gyarados/Lapras/Kingdra - Water monsters
Pinsir/Heracross/Scizor - Bug Battle
Tyrogue wooper Iggy sounds fire...
.....Wooper is not a baby pokemon. These "themes" are head canon lol
Jrose after Moltres does well against Red: "If only it was good against the rest of the game"..
It literally only really struggled against Lance which took ages?!
crazy how moltres was able to one-shot rayquaza with the clutch crit at the end there
39:32 thunder missed four times the ai was like your luck just ran out bro
Before I watch the video.....I'm going to guess Articuno wins. I say this because it's typing of ice and flying would appear to have the advantage over Elec-Flying or Fire-Flying. Yes, there are trainers with electric types, but there are no serious battles with a trainer that has fire types until Rocket Archer, Lance, Blaine, Blue, and Red. By then, Articuno should be strong enough, and have good coverage, to deal with those trainers.
***EDIT*** well now.....I couldn't have been more wrong lmao
Can't wait for the inevitable Registeel-Regirock-Regice in RSE video
Wait.... Red's Venasaur vs Articuno. It started solar beam, you flew, it used synthesis, then after you hit fly it ONLY THEN it used the second turn of solar beam to hit. Did i miss something here?
It didn't charge up Solar Beam - it used Sunny Day.
That ad read was…legendary
Parahaxs are only parahax when you paralyze the target with the secondary effect and then they are paralyzed that turn. It is not whenever the pokemon is paralyzed. The reason it's a hax is becaues the attacker had no chance of seeing the paralze hitting and you did it after the moves were already selected lol Just gotta say that. Love your videos man! Keep it up!
Yeah I agree, I always thought of a "true" parahax meaning you use a 10% para chance move and then you get the 25% "fully paralyzed" right after, meaning you hit a lucky 2.5% (1/40) chance event. Usually considered to be an "excessively, unfairly lucky" thing in competitive battling.
@@yesec9 That's true. Glad you wrote down the numbers because that's what makes it so lucky hahaha It's body slamming into a pokémon that will kill you if they attack, you paralze and then they fail to move. Stuff like that.
Imagine if Zapdos had a great moveset to go along with those stats.
9:16 Miltank actually has 50% more Def (105) than Sp. Def (70). Moltres' better Attack stat and Wing Attack's higher base power, compared to Ember, means that they should pretty much be doing the exact same damage.
The Zephyr Badge also raises your Pokémon's Attack stat by 12.5%, as well as boosting the power of Flying-type moves by another 12.5%.
Miltank has much better Defense than Special Defense, not the other way around.
Which Metal Coat Pokemon is Best in Pokemon Gold/Silver? Scizor vs Steelix
When I was younger Articuno was my favorite due to the design while I didn't like motres much at all as we had many fire flying types running around. Zapdos I didn't like how it had no electric moves so I ignored it.
Now Zapdos is my favorite as any electric type that is immune to ground is a hero in my eyes
Articuno won a world tournament recently! Zapdos was done dirty in BDSP. They took away Heat Wave, a move Zapdos relied on against steel types like Steelix and Excadrill
@@Kali_Krause yeah I don't get how pokemon can remove moves and especially ones that give pokemon balance
@@ivanbluecoolsome moves I can understand. Mainly stuff like Synchronoise that’s nigh useless anyway.
I remember when the Legendary Birds were my fave Pokemon...and big shock Zapdos did the best of all the 'trio' Pokemon. If I have this correct, Zapdos is consider ABSURDLY cheap in Gen 2 competitive and that seems to reflect here as well. Poor Articuno being mostly shafted after Gen 1 until MAYBE getting a Galarian form in Gen 8. Articuno was my fave.
But yeah, I liked this video quite a lot overall! I wonder if Lugia/Ho-Oh will be next.
@Jrose11: the probability to miss any four thunders in a row is 1/37, since the first thunder miss is a given. Unless you specify them, e.g. "the next four thunders", then you include the first thunder and the probability is 1/123. This is an important distinction
Awesome video. Surprised how good Zapdos did despite its best moves being Thunder and Drill Peck---but those are strong moves at least, just not accurate. Moltres was pretty surprising too, wonderful powerhouse there.
To continue with the Trios you could do RSE with the Regi Trio, Beasts, and Birds
Great job Jrose and I wasn’t expecting Zapdos to win but it was a great video and keep up the amazing work
Zapdos has always been the best in competitive play so it makes sense
Did not know where this would go. Been a nail biter lol. Good win for zaptwo
Drill Peck does more damage than Fly.
It's always amazing to me what you call bad luck, or exceptionally bad luck as with the case of Thunder vs Lance.
To me, missing 4 Thunders in a row is unfortunately commonplace. I understand that the odds are pretty low, but negative things with low odds of occurrence tend to occur really frequently for me.
Some of the things you call bad luck, I see as completely normal events in my experience.
I have played a LOT of Gen 1 and 2. I have my own gaming channel with some things about it, mostly shorts. But I've been playing both gens since their original release dates, and I'm a little older than JRose. Blizzard is the #1 misser for me. Squirtle/Blastoise have been robbed of some great runs with accuracy issues. I DEFINITELY get Gen 1 misses way more often than JRose does.
I was obsessed with these birds when i was a kid. I remember getting so stuck trying to catch Articuno.
If you taught Zapdos Rest against Red like Moltres has, then you wouldn't even have needed that Drill Peck crit. Otherwise pretty cool. I already figured Zapdos would do the best in this but it's surprising how handy Moltres' high physical attack was throughout all this
I was literally just wondering when you would be back! :)
I like never comment on videos, but I'm legit so excited to see this I had to let the world know
When I was a kid I traded my Articuno from red to gold as soon as I was able to and basically used it to sweep the game, felt like such a genius (I think I may must have had an obedience issue, but had a good enough moveset that it didn't matter)
The Great War of the Birds and the Beasts. It's like I'm reading Silverwing again.
And here I thought you'd be keeping your gamer water cool with Articuno's Ice Beam :o
Always a good day when Jrose uploads a video
I think this is one of the few times where the in-game results are similar to the competitive scene. Usually this doesn't happen
Jrose: That was an unintentional rhyme, but bear with me here.
Me: No, bear against you here. You're fighting it. :)
Ok, now we have the definitive video duology, the perfect way to introduce the young ones to this delicate topic:
"The Birds and the Beasts"
So i actually already have an iron flask, got it last year for my birthday, that bottle slaps, can recommend
Prediction before watching the run: Zapdos will win by a solid chunk. Moltres and Articuno will have trouble against Lance's Aerodactyl and will need to level up more than Zapdos to tank the Rock Slide and/or outspeed and KO first. They should all perform more or less the same vs Red, but the extra time Zapdos saves in the E4 will give it the win.
Edit (after watching): I underestimated how messed up the level curve was in Johto, they were already high-level enough for Aerodactyl not to be a problem, at least for Articuno. My prediction ended up right, for the wrong reasons lol
Ahh yes, the birds and the beasts
Articuno and moltres’ typing really holds them back defensively. Especially since they don’t even get that much use out of their flying typing offensively
One thing you never took into consideration when playing was the fact that you kept over leveling the Zapdos and Moltres and save all candies for Art which means it would have better game play if you would have been leveling it up as you went through
Hope you're having a good day
videos like this make me wanna pay for youtube premium so i can download it and watch on my flight!

"We start off by freezing clefairy which is pretty solid" I see what ya did there lol.
Will you continue making more gen 2 videos? I enjoyed these a lot.
Zapdos is the strongest, Articuno the prettiest and Moltres is the funniest 💪🏻
The comment in chat at 6:44 describes this so well : "Articuno? More like Arti-Bruno!"
Dont forget you still have a couple of 1st gen solo runs to finish. Concentrate them on them and do these kind of runs later. By the way, if you want suggestion - how about checking which pseudo legends from ach of first 3 gens can finish their respective game faster? Dragonite for R/B/Y, Tyranitar for G/S/C and Salamence and Metagross for R/S/E.
1:25 Iron Flask sounds like a paradox Pokémon name. Whatever it is, it would be either Steel/Water or Steel/Ice type.
The fact that Articuno, the bird with an amazing offensive type, was the only one of the birds to lose the 125 special attack is something I will always get annoyed at. Zapdos was always the bird that had the best hybrid offenses and an amazing defensive type, so it should have been the one to be the bulky one.
Gamefreak just loves making tanks and giving them a glass cannon typing.
At least the recent tourney win was a high in the sea of meh it tried to crawl itself out of after being forced to be a tank.
I was happy to see Moltres make a come back :) it’s my favorite of the 3

My fave bed time story is back.
Can I make a suggestion to the editor for the future? Can you add the times on screen at different intervals when Jrose mentions them, just so we have a visual indicator and a comparrison?! I would like to see just how different the times are visually when he's at similar points in the game in these 'which is better' runs.
It would just make it easier to see how well one Pokemon is doing compared to another, especially at that point in this video with the 6th and 7th gym leaders.
I suppose it'd be nice, sure, but who knows if Jrose even recorded those runs? Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't. Or so he mentions off-handedly from time to time.
Completely agree. Knowing times at different splits would drastically up the tension.
