- king of ghazals ustad mehdi hassan sings a thumri in a private mehfil.
this private mehfil was held in vancouver canada in 1977 at the residence of former pakistani play back singer salim raza (jaane baharan fame).
salim raza migrated to canada in the 70's where he opened a music school in vancouver.
he was a very good friend of khan sahib mehdi hassan.
one of our respected friend "raqib56" has explained this item in detail.i am copying his info for all of you.

precious thumri from Ustad marhoom.
it is certainly from one of the seven existing styles i.e
Dhurupad, Dhammar, Sadra, Khayyal,Tappa,Tarana,Thumri, now, this one is marvelously mixture of khayyal in Khamaaj
thaat ( there are 10 priciples scales ( thaats; Vilawal, Kalyan,
khamaj, Bhairon, puvi,marwa, kafee, Asawari, bhairavin & Todi ).
Khan Sahib's ability was such that he could use dadra
thumri giving it a full length raaga look !" - เพลง

क्या गायन है !! मैं जब भी मेंहदी हसन साहिब की इस प्रस्तुति को सुनता हूं, मैं मंत्रमुग्ध हो जाता हूं। मैं अक्सर सोचता हूं कि ईश्वर किसी किसी शख्सियत में इतनी खूबियों को बख्श देता है कि वो व्यक्ति इस पृथ्वी पर ईश्वर ही बन जाता है। मेंहदी हसन साहिब भी गायन के क्षेत्र इस पृथ्वी पर साक्षात ईश्वर ही थे। तथागत की अनुकंपा हो और वो परनिर्वाण को प्राप्त हों।

Although, everybody is busy debating whether the song is in Des or Tilak Kamod, one must just listen to it as pure music, because being a Ghazal Artist, Mehdi Hassan Saheb must have taken a few instances of freedom of choice between Des and Tilak Kamod. It's definitely based on those Ragas, but he doesn't sing only one, purely as Classical artists would do. The Phrases such as Pa-Ni-Sa-Re-Ga-Sa / Re-ma-Pa-Dha-ma-Ga-Sa are from Tilak Kamod, however, Re ma Pa Ni and 'ni-Dha-Pa are more used in Des. While people do suggest that both are Janya Raagas of Khamaaj Thaat, there used to be an earlier (More Praacheen) Thaat called "Sorath" -- Des is often considered to be a janya (Derivative) of this scale or Thaatt, called SORATH. However, the modern convention has embraced both Ragas to be from Khamaaj Thaat.

I have listened to this bandish for the first time. But the great Mehdi Hassan Saab could cast an instant spell on me. It was so free flowing, soothing, soulful, but overbearing. The feeling was divine ; as if my thirst will remain insatiated even if l listen to him umpteen number of times at a stretch. What a formidable singer the great Khan Saab was? Let us stand up and salute this great inspirational singer and gem of a man!

What a strange equation indeed ! Am I in any way responsible for someone's undoing/shortcomings ! If someone feels elated in doing so, let one do it ! It seems -leg - pulling and back - biting is someone's favourite pastime !
