Cold Wax Oil Painting Tutorial

  • Hi everyone. Have you ever tried cold wax painting? If not, this tutorial is for you - and even if you have tried it you might learn something new.
    I find cold wax one of the best ways to loosen up while painting. Don't worry about a brush or even design principles when you start, just paint. Once you have a good base that you're happy with, then you can create your center of interest. So follow along as we go from blank paper to four completed paintings.
    Also, for those of you that are wondering, the scraper I used is called a Messermeister Silicone Bowl Scraper, but any bowl scraper will do.
    Give this a try and be sure to let me know in the comments how you liked it.
    Hugs,
    Gwen

    Love this video - so much direction and inspiration. I would LOVE to take a workshop with you if and when you should ever offer it - hopefully scheduled when college is not in session so I can bring my daughter along - she is the true artist in the family. We are in Connecticut but a trip to NM would be so much fun to look forward to once it is safe to travel. Thank you so much for what you do to inspire the creative spirit. LynnAnn

    Save the tape put it to the side on a white cheep paper. You can create another painting with it. The tape is pretty easy to paint over and can end up with interesting pattern plus, it’s sticky so , you are drawing a shape with the tape as you lay it down.

    Great video. ❤ I am watching to learn before I try cold wax and oil. I read that you like the oil paper. How does it compare with using gesso over watercolor paper? I have a lot of watercolor paper. I’d like to know…do you frame these, or only have attached to cradled boards?

    • @GwenFoxArtist
      @GwenFoxArtist  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maureen....I do like the oil paper but also paint on other supports. I think putting gesso on your watercolor paper....especially the 300lb would work great...not sure if the 140lb would buckle....try it and see. I usually let me buyer frame the piece they like as it gets so expensive. As to attaching to cradled boards....that works but would be hard with the 300lb paper.

      Are you saying using cold wax and oil together is not considered legit painting? The demo I did was just that....a demo...an idea on how to start using one of the most sensual mediums available. Yes, cold wax painting is "painting"...it is fantastic painting and it is a medium that stirs creativity .....Oh, I could go on and on but you must explain why "it's not painting".

      Wendy.....thanks for your comment.....love your "silly" questions.....of which are not silly at all. I get my cold wax from an art store online or in town. It comes in a tin can and when mixed with oil does not dilute the paint color at all. The cold wax just offers the artist another medium to try and see what they can create. I love the ability to scratch through and get to the layers below as it is always new and exciting. It is also a medium that you can get mud easily so go thin and slow. Let me know if you try it ...... if you are a loose painter I think you would really enjoy it.

    I see this was made a year ago so won’t expect a response to my comment. This is new to me and I know I’ll love this once I get started. The thing I need more understanding of is just how much I can do using cold wax. Obviously not everything can be used with it for a mixed media but what happens if the base is acrylic or oil pastel for instance comes to mind. Does anyone combine watercolor work as a form of under painting? How about alcohol ink? Airbrush? Which mediums are cooperative, what effects do they have? So many questions I have in this area to ask!

    • @GwenFoxArtist
      @GwenFoxArtist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late response to your wonderful questions...Here are the basics....you can use cold wax and oil over gesso boards and panels and over paintings that have been painted with acrylic. The big rule is you can NOT put acrylic over cold wax...it is the "fat over lean" theory. As to watercolor being the base and then using cold wax over it....I just had a student do this and it was beautiful BUT...the watercolor paper must have a layer of gesso over it before using the watercolor. This protects the paper from the acid of the oil. If you have other questions please email me at gwen@gwenfox.com

    I’m currently into watercolors….love them. But I’m also drawn to oils but not as much. I had a small jar of cold wax that I picked up sometime back and never really used it. I think I’d like to try your techniques here with my oils. I mostly do abstract and semi-abstract so what you did would be very comfortable for me to try. I have the Gamblin cold wax, but I’d want to look for a wax with no solvent added in case I wanted to get my fingers in it, that I tend to like to do. Thanks for this helpful vid!

      Jumping in…hope that’s ok. You can’t paint with cold wax and oils on an unstretched canvas. It is really best to paint on a cradled panel or paper if you need to ship a painting. Any flexing of the substrate can cause the wax to crack and fall off. A rigid support is best. As far as dry time, it takes several weeks to cure, depending on your climate and atmosphere. Hope you don’t mind me answering here, Gwen.

    • @GwenFoxArtist
      @GwenFoxArtist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harry....I realize this is late in answering you but here goes...I am not familiar with the term A2 but Arches has an oil based paper you can use. To mount it on a board use ASK Glue....put the glue on the paper and the board. Carefully place the paper on the board so it is level with the edges and then take a scraper and go from the center of the paper and push outward. This will remove all the bubbles. When done put a piece of newsprint over the painting (on the board) and put books on top and don't disturb for several days.
