Nikki did amazing! You can see the progress in just ONE ride. This is her very first time and she listened very well. The ride back shows massive improvement. We chose this rode because its a simple, easy, and curved road to practice countersteering. I did get scared, but I was doing the same thing when I first started!

She's come a long ways in a short period of time. Your are right about more saddle time. Nothing can replace experience in varied conditions. Learning to ride in sections that have gravel, sand, and wet surfaces will prove to be invaluable in the future. I was lucky learning to ride dirt first. Taught me body english, and how to control the bike while the rear tire is spinning, and sliding. With that experience you don't freak out when it suddenly happens. You instinctively respond correctly. Of course all the knowledge of how to ride is good, but useless in an emergency until it is practiced to the point it becomes second nature. Muscle memory. The one on one training with communication you are giving her while she rides is really great. We had nothing like that in the late 1960's when I learned to ride.
It has been fun watching her progress. I think your encouraging style of teaching will go a long ways in making her a safe, and confident rider who enjoys the sport.

For body lean angle. She should slightly lean forward toward the grip she counters-steers with.
Example-Making right turn, intentionally lean her head/upper body toward your right hand. That helps body position, and head angle in turns.
And for cornering, outside-inside-outside method, which you can use the whole lane, or even use on lane position 2, edge of 1, to the edge of 3.

I’ll remember that when I take my first ride.

Being a newbie rider myself with only two shorter trips under the belt I know exactly how she felt (I think) during those turns where she almost crossed the lines. You can feel that you’re not turning enough, but at the same time you’re scared stiff about making any movements at that speed that will make the bike go upright and possibly leaning the wrong way. I guess the only thing you can do is build up confidence with practice.
Corners are my worst fear and especially right corners for some reason🇸🇪

Great video! I had my first ride on the public roads a few weeks ago and watching this brought all the emotion back. I could totally relate to those sighs Nikki made after the first stop. lol Unfortunately for me, when heading home, I was feeling a little too confident and pushed myself on a low speed tight turn and laid my bike down. Sucked. Fortunately I was just a little banged up, but totally mobile. And my bike just scratched on the fairing and bars a bit, but otherwise still ran fine. I've been riding since without issues. Getting better day by day. That crashed actually helped me to stay aware of my skill level and caused me to realize my mistake so I don't make it at higher speeds. Anyway, I really enjoyed watching this video and reliving my first ride through Nikki. :-)

You both did a great job. Congrats, this is a very good way to get someone started riding. I would add just one tip. Avoid early apexes, like you coached "you started turning a bit too early." Newbies have a tendency to do that. Reinforce that a bit more because, one day, you'll approach an unfamiliar turn and surprise yourself at a bit too much speed. If you are conditioned for later apexes, you will tend to slow down more if you can't see the exit of the corner. I hope that helps.

10:50 - That´s exactly the point. There are several additional advantages to ride behind your pupil. You are better suited to tell off traffic from the rear. You can always guide your pupil through the intercom. You will also be able to tell your pupil if something is coming up in their blindspots. Golden example of how to teach a new rider, Dan - I want to show this to Norwegian riders too.
A neat little trick for new riders to negotiate slow turns like roundabouts or intersections, is to drag the rear brake, and stay off the front brakes. It feels a lot more confident doing it that way.

I have my MSF course in 2 weeks through H-D and pretty nervous but now after watching many of your beginners videos, my whole perspective has changed from riding nervously to now having fun, and being loose. My friends who are experience riders, who has never taken an MSF, tell me to lean my body. But now I will do the pushing motion instead of leaning. Please keep doing what you're doing, and keep making videos for beginners to feel more comfortable riding, and especially safely. God bless.

Also, I'm still nervous on going past 45 as it feels incredibly fast, which is scary. I've driven manual cars all my life but on a motorcycle is a whole another experience. I don't really care for fast bikes. Eventually I want to get a Grom, and a Rebel 1100.

This was really good to see, got my endorsement a couple of years ago and soon after that I had to undergo knee surgery and a complete replacement the yr after and now im so excited to say bought my 1st bike and at the same time a little scared to hit the road for the 1st time since my endorcement. Clearly I'd love to take her out but the nerves are there. This video was clear and got a few pointers. Im planning to practice in a lot 1st and then out... talk about excited. Thank you for sharing this video.

Congratulations from the U.K. (where we don't have nice quiet roads like that). Nikki has done amazingly well in such a short span of time. You both should be very proud. I haven't ridden a bike in 25 years but now I want to buy a Rebel and hop across the pond and join you. Keep the videos coming. :)

This brought back memories of all the trepidation I had when starting out and like Nikki my first mentor was patient and encouraging Slowly increasing my confidence and skills. Well done Nikki I have no doubt you will get there. Stay safe and enjoy this amazing way to live

Good God man! I was nervous as hell watching that. I can't imagine how you felt being right there and being responsible for her. You did a really good job instructing her and keeping your cool. I was really hungry when I started watching this video but now I've lost my appetite. That's how nervous I was. Anyway, another great video!

When I first started riding on public roads, It was in a rural area and STILL I often had that ONE car that just had to be behind me. You quickly find out as a beginner that cars go faster than you in turns. after 2 years this is still annoying, but you must not try to ride faster. Just let them pass when you both have room, pref on a straight away.

She did a great job! I am envious. My Wife not only would never ride motorcycle she will never ride passenger on mine.
She’s ridden horses for years. Much more unpredictable than a motorcycle. Though the other drivers on the road make life unpredictable. It would be fun though. Wish she would.

Nice to have a practice video and be able to refer back to it. As a novice rider, the 'counter-steer' concept is tough, she did a great job. What may help is; more lean. Being so straight up and trying to 'counter-steer', is difficult. Lean more. Hop on a bicycle and practice the lean, it's more intuitive and will transfer to the motorcycle.

This was perfect. From her point of view it showed a genuine reaction to how riding in traffic for the first time is terrifying. From your side absolutely perfect instructions. You're calm, give great advice and do everything for her like check traffic, remind her to put the stand down. Great video

Goodness gracious, I am sweating looking at your girl, it gave me a healthy amount of anxiety. Well done to her. Great progress. Not sure how much were you guys practising but still great progress. I am just thinking that I need to do the same with my wife. She had a bad fall (with 5mph, over a foot high fence, right on the road with traffic, got some bruises on her legs and some bloody lips) right after passing the basic test and that was last August, since then she sat only on stationary bikes and is scared like crazy. Good weather is coming so we need to find a parking lot (much larger than the previous one) to practice, but you can't find such wide roads in London. Keep it upright.

Hey Dan...thanks for all of your great videos. I'm a returning rider and have learned a lot from them this year. It was a lot of fun watching Nikki's first major ride (I saw a lot of myself in her when I did my first major ride a few months ago). Anyway, just a few points of constructive criticism. I didn't see Nikki using her turn signals on any of the turns so I would definitely get in the habit of using them every single time you make a turn or lane change. Blinking lights make you more visible. Also, when she was coming out of the break at 11:00, she didn't come to a complete stop before turning right onto the street. And, again, no turn signal. I was taught at stop signs or red lights to come to a complete stop, foot down, signal on, look, then go.
Again, sorry to be so nitpicky and nothing personal against Nikki or you but safety should always be our number one concern as motorcyclists, especially new motorcyclists. It just takes one mistake out there. Honestly, I would spend more time just riding through quiet neighborhoods with lots of stop signs, turns, upshifting, downshifting...get all the basics under your belt going 20-30 MPH for several months...then go out onto the faster roads. But that's just me.
Thanks again for all the great videos and ride safe Nikki (and Dan)!

Great video! This is exactly where I am on my journey. Hearing her self talk is what I do too.. as of today I have 210 miles under my belt of actually driving my motorcycle. and I can total relate to her anxiety and trying to trust the bike on corners and stopping and starting properly .. most videos I've watched have seemed out of my league, but this one really hit home. Thanks for the video. so refreshing not to feel so alone in this new venture. I realize this was posted in 2018, but I'm see this for the first time and makes me think I'm on the right track. I will do some more digging on your channel for more vids like this... Thanks you DanDan the Fireman !

In AZ, you Have to be careful of sand in the turns. Last yr , a female friend took a sharp turn and the bike slid out from under her. She broke her back and was paralyzed from the waist down - after being in the hospital for two months, she went home and committed suicide three months later. She was an experienced rider of over 20yrs.

Oh man, I remember taking my bike to the street for the first time, 30km/h felt like 80 haha. I only went around the block once and nearly shat myself at a stop sign just overwhelmed by two brakes and downshifting.
