    Had my first red stage moment today. Someone merging from the right across my lane to get into the left turning lane just before an intersection (AU, we drive on the left). I was following the scanning patterns you'd described so saw it coming even though they moved so late I had no room to break. Swerved round them and had to accelerate through. Cheers for helping me stay upright :)

      yes, watching Dan has saved me from many potential accidents. Purely from predicting what will happen before it enviably does and being already prepared for it.
      Like for example the one with the truck in the rain. I would have braked immediately after see the indicator go on. Putting aside the fact I wouldn't put myself beside a truck or that close to the van.

      Dude, if you live in the SF Bay Area, you see that a lot on all the freeways. Right turns from the left lane and left turn from the right lane.
      As far as the truck goes I know they can’t see me. I stay far behind. I started flashing high beams when I pass them to catch their eye.

It is really surprising how often in normal life sensible people leave reason behind as soon as they have a throttle in their right hand. And never forget: as a biker, you never can win, you are always the weaker one on the road. Even if its your right. Leave your ego at home. Being right but being in the ditch is always stupid. @@adriandekiewiet8919pretty sure he's referring to watching the front tires of cars next to you. I've been doing this since I was 16. This applies to when you're driving a car or riding a bike.
      Keep your eyes on the front tires when you're passing people or when they're next to you. You'll see them pass over the white lines.
      As you approach cars you're often in people's blind spots, or they just don't pay attention, and they'll change lanes abruptly without using a blinker or just drift into your lane unintentionally. Happens pretty much every day, especially on the interstate.

Just as the motorcyclist was happy to chance an amber turning to orange the car driver was happy to chance amber turning to red. I had a lowside on a roundabout yesterday, fortunately I was only doing 15mph. Hit a patch of diesel on already greasy, wet road, and my front end just stepped out. I was straight back up, gave the bike a one-handed lift and spent the next 20 minutes just pacing around making sure nothing was broken. Protective gear saved my head, my arms, my torso and my legs. It did nothing for my dignity, though. Bike got a few scratches and lost the end off the throttle grip. Gave it a once over this morning, tightened the headstock (two bolts had snapped loose), checked the engine, gearbox, brakes, all good.

    In the UK one thing I have noticed is that car drivers always tend to slow down passing lorries/trucks. Not sure why. Maybe they are worried about being in the blindspot too long. But the thing is, if they didn't slow down when passing they would be past the lorry/truck faster. However, I have always done what Dan has said; I wait for the vehicle in front of me to be past and clear of the lorry/truck before I begin my own overtake.

    • @233kosta
      @233kosta 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I drove cars for about a decatlde before getting on two wheels (silly me, I know... 😔) and the main thing I noticed about overtaking lorries is the effect of the flow field around them. First it sucks you in gently, as you come past the side of the trailer. Then it pulls you in as you approach the front, then it pushes you out. About halfway past the trailer, it also starts pushing you back.
      That all happens because the gap between the lorry and the car is usually quite narrow, so you're effectively sat inside the lorry's flow field. That's why I'd advise any rider to give them a wide berth. We have a whole lane to play with, it makes sense to stay out of the aerodynamic hazard. Same goes for meeting one on A-roads and the like. There's absolutely no reason to deliberately put yourself in the path of a lorry's air blast - shift away from it if it's clear.
      Given how inattentive so many drivers are, I would not be surprised if most of them fail to correct for these effects. In extreme cases, you might see them wandering across the lane somewhat. But the decelaration effect is more subtle, so it's normal to see more people slowing down as a result.

      I went back to driving artics temporarily during the pandemic. One thing that was stark compared to 20 years before was the amount of cars that sit on motorways hovering back and forth 55-58 mph. It’s like a new trend. Too much to cover here, but put yourself in their mirror so you can see their face and stay behind them until you have room to scoot by unimpeded. Give them a few seconds at least to pick a lane and if you decide to pass, don't dilly dally.

    Large trucks have huge blind spots all around the vehicle. You are correct. If you can see his side mirror more likely than not the driver can see you. Wait for the vehicle in front of you to pass the truck and have a good deep receiving space for you to fly into when you pass the truck before you attempt to do so. And when you go to do so honk your horn to alert the truck driver that you are passing. He did not know you were in his right blind side.

Because if I’m in the middle of the line and the car infront hits the brakes or I’m not paying attention then I have to apply brake and swerve a lot but if I’m right or left of the lane then if the car hits the brakes I don’t have to swerve as much I just have to slightly tilt the bike and I can go by the car and also eliminates the risk of hitting the brakes and the car behind you slams into you. This is great for bikers that let situations arise by trying to keep moving at about the same speed and assuming others will ride and drive competently, but that is not how to ride a bike, IT IS NOT A CAR you MUST accelerate, brake and change speed all the time. This maintains a better safety margin and is much more enjoyable. The guy on the bend lowsiding was slow in, but then too fast, not trailbraking, in too high a gear, and probably had poor body position and not looking in the right place on top. The guy who hit the swerving car should have held back on seeing a queue and braked hard when the car moved suddenly, turned, braked hard again. The guy at the lights - again, hold back, use the time the lights change to assess traffic from left and right and ahead, quick look behind in case a nutter biker is coming up fast to split at high speed and blast out when all is clear. Great fun and safe. That's as far as I've got. To be honest, whilst lessons are important, if a person doesn't instinctively ride fairly well, they probably shouldn't be a biker.
