2003 Chevrolet S10 ABS Wheel Sensor Replacement

  • I finally decided to order a replacement anti-lock brake wheel sensor for my truck, and the Keykeeper helped me install it. The hardest part of this process was connecting the new wiring.
Here's a little bit of a backgrounder on how vehicle diagnostic trouble codes work: The various computer/control modules have memory and can store codes that are transient in nature. Certain codes will "go away" by no longer illuminating a warning light when they have been resolved. Yet they will be remembered as long as the computer in question has power or until they are erased with a scan tool.
The difference in scan tools is one of programming only. Every one I've had apart--from cheap to expensive--has used an off-the-shelf CAN bus communications IC. It's just a matter of what the microcontroller used is programmed to do when it comes to how much information the scan tool can report.
This truck has logged at least one very interesting code in its time. It claimed that communication with the instrument panel had been lost. I'd love to know just how that happened.
There are also interesting codes that can be set. The service manual states that if the horn relay (!!!) is energized for longer than a certain period of time, a trouble code will be set in the body control module.

I have a '00 Sonoma. It always starts, has never broken down and has never failed failed to start. But I tell ya, it's done some FUNKY stuff.

Hi Bill, The “cow head” as you referred to on the yellow tag is there to aid the GM employees when sorting a particular GM dealers parts order in the warehouse . Every GM dealership has their unique symbol. This reduces errors as the picked parts are sorted and increases production so our customers can get the right part in a timely manner. Thanks for the video. Waiting for spring to replace my speed sensors on my 2000 suburban.

I always see the S10 and Sonoma trucks around, but I never see the S15. I've only seen two trucks in person that were branded as the S15; the one in my local junkyard, and the one that I drive everyday. They're great little trucks, and mine, of course, does not have ABS.

With all this work on vehicles and diesels you should do a startup on your rusty old diesel, before the snow flies, lol

Good to have the safety feature working properly again I bet. My car doesn't have such a feature, it's old. . . . and slow but it's a nice enough car.

The way I heard about the squeel noise, was it got to do with the belt where you are running your old 2003 Chevy S10 to run on AC?

Hey Bill I have a question for you to ask the keykeeper. My ABS light sometimes comes on along with the brake light but I shut my truck off then start it back up and they go off. Cause what it will do is I start it and my brake and abs light both come on. Then I shut it off and turn it back on and they go off. What could that be? Cause there is nothing wrong with my brakes.

They do make portable lifts where you basically get 4 hydraulic jacks (they lift up more than a jack would, it is a real lift) and sort of a main unit with a pump. Would be perfect for the garage since you wouldn't need to build it into the floor.

So...if people up there take a vehicle and garage it all winter without it touching salty roads, does it avoid all the rust issues or is there so much residual salt along the roads that even rain during the summer cause rust?

. You show us your truck parked, you show us the neat code reader, you show us what the underside of your truck looks like. It's 4 minutes in till you show the wheel. Then there's a shot of everything off but the wheel sensor.
My husband fortunately has done brake work, so he's taken everything off, but it would help if you stayed on task and showed the process of actually taking stuff off for someone who hasn't done brake work yet and just needs to do the sensor.
Are you not allowed to show it?

To anyone that needs it, this video shows the wheel, rotor, and hub removal process for a Chevy Astro 2WD which should be the same as the S10.

No, I never had any further trouble with it. Several thousand miles later, I traded the truck off because the fuel pump failed.

my mom's 2003 chevy blazer the brakes sometimes spaz out on her, like we will be driving down the road and preparing to stop so she puts her foot in the brake and then the brakes start to stutter then she loose all pressure in her brakes and therefore she has to pump them to get them back. we have taken the car to a part store and there are two abs sensors that have gone out. we have replaced the master cylinder and that has helped a little bit but it doesn't fix the problem.

Well the keykeeper made that look like a walk in the park :-)
My god, is that scan tool big enough lol.
I was supprised how decent the underside was as well, pity you didnt have a spray can full of wd40 or similar, as i would have drenched the rusty parts to displace any water and try to slow the rusting process down a bit.
Good video bill, as allways :-)

These GM's are funny like that. As are some other cars. You have to drive them after a while to turn the damn light off. I notice this happen alot after people get a drive clean done. It messes with the ABS system because only the front wheels are spinning (FWD cars) so it sets a code thus setting the light off.

My way to fix the ABS light? Put a piece of tape over the light, or take the bulb out! I hate anti-lock brakes. I'm used to pumping my brakes, and to me, when the anti-locks kick in, I feel like I don't have control of the car!
My Safari van is making that exact same noise! I'm about 99% sure it's the AC compressor. Everything else on the front of the engine has been replaced recently, including the timing chain. My problem is, I don't have time to work on it.

This has come up elsewhere in these comments, and I find it interesting. One might think the sheer number of symbols would get to be overwhelming. I'd have to think there were at least several thousand, if not tens of thousands, of GM dealers in the US alone!

@@uxwbill OK I did it. The GM Factory Manual, Volume 1, Page 582/583 is of very limited help, but it did lead me to a web detail of the connectors. GM Part No. 12052641, Metri-Pac 150. The location of these connectors in the 4.3 V6 was established on the assembly line before the engine was installed. They are a P.I.T.A. to see, reach, and disconnect. My arms look like I have been in a machete fight. The right side is much easier than the left. I manipulated a long flat blade screwdriver under the plastic tab on the connector and with a flip the connector separated. This is NOT easy to do there is so much in the way and the connector female side is attached to the frame on a sliding little bracket. On the right side removing the mass air flow sensor and the air filter will help. The GM personnel involved in the wiring routing details should be ashamed at this. They have no interest in maintenance, just moving the vehicle down the assembly line.
