Brake pedal buzz at stops - ABS kicks on at stops - Cleaning Wheel Speed Sensors - GM Truck

  • ABS problems! Let's look at why my trailblazer brake pedal buzzes when coming to a stop. The anti lock brake system activates at stops. Unwanted low speed ABS activation is super annoying. The ABS has been activating at every stop under 5 mph, even in dry conditions. No codes or warning lights. It's a typical GM truck issue, and it's relatively easy to fix! All I did was remove and clean the wheel hub and wheel speed sensors. No more brake buzzing!

    I do not usually comment on TH-cam but today was the exception. After wasting hundreds of dollars on mechanics to fix my buzzing issue which they could not figure it out . Also the Toyota dealer wanted $1,000 to replace both front ABS sensors to fix my brake buzzing issue. I was able to follow your advice on your video and today I finally cleaned the rust between the hub and the ABS sensors. My buzzing issue disappeared. You saved me more money because I was going to replace both sensors. I drive a Toyota Sienna 2008 LE. Thanks for your video.

    just some minor additions:
    1.) you don't need to loosen the brake caliper first and the bracket after that. Just unscrew that 18 mm bolts and take off the whole assembly in one step, saves time.
    2.) after removing the rust scales and cleaning up the area where the sensor sits, use some grease or just a thin layer of spray paint to prevent it from rusting right back up again. will make it last longer until the next exakt same procedure
    Other than that, great video and keep it up :-)

I have had issues with my abs module making the front brakes drag . I have a scan tool Foxwell NT630 Plus .. which does abs bleed and more .. I imagine what is happening is that the modulator dump valve is stuck after I fitted new pads and did a brake fluid flush / replacement . Using the scan tool I can hear the various valves clicking but when the scanner asks for the abs on off the disc is so solid that it is not possible to turn the disc by hand .

    Great idea. But heads up.ive read discussions about driveing without ABS Its very dangerous in a sudden stop can prevent scidding out hiting a car.

      Absolutely true but ABS does Increase stopping distance by releasing the brake that's causing you to go out of control

    I used to think that that sound was caused by some dirt on the brake mechanism because everytime I have my car cleaned, I don't often hear that sound. Now I think the dirty sensors might just be the culprit

  • @RedWhiteAndBlueVideo

    GM had a bulletin out on this. You did everything they said except. It said to use a pencil eraser down the sensor hole and turn the hub to clean the inner surface. If I remember right it did say apply a light coat of grease to the sensor base.
    The rust jacks the sensor up and creates too big of a gap for the sensor to make a proper reading.

    I drive a 2014 Hyundai Elantra..whenever I’m driving slow the abs light goes off but when I drive fast it comes back on..When the Abs light is off I hear grinding noises on the driver side when I apply brakes but when the abs light comes back on and I brake I don’t hear any grinding sound(grrrrr). Changed my wheel speed sensors twice and rotor. driving me crazy. I will try to clean any rust like you said. I hope it works

  • @fredwagner7424
    @fredwagner7424 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Daninator! Your check engine light was on after you fixed the symptoms. Was the check light on because of the dirty ABS sensor or was that a different issue all together? I ask because I have a 2003 Trailblazer LTZ that has the exact same problem. At every stop that before the vehicle comes to a holt, brake pedal buzzes and vibrates a little. But I didn’t get a check engine light on mine. Only time it doesn’t do it is if I come to a stop super slow without applying much peddle. I work on all my own vehicles as long as I have the tools and the time to do so. Very helpful video! Much oblige!

    • @TheDaninator

      I don't believe the check engine light was related to my braking issue.

    • @fredwagner7424
      @fredwagner7424 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok I feel better about it knowing that your check light wasn't related to the ABS issue. Now I don't have to wonder why I didn't get a code and someone else did for the same problem. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

      Hello M. Yeah that kinda sucks after all that work. I haven’t gotten a chance to try fixing mine yet. But I’m driving to work tomorrow morning because we just got slammed with snow and ice. I’m still going to try cleaning the sensor first and take it from there. I’ll let you how it goes. I’m your case, after what you’ve done already before I would buy anymore parts I would try bleeding the brakes. Unless you already tried that. That’s what I was going to first try until I seen his video. Only because the peddle seems to go down farther than normal when that happens. It never happens when I use the brakes any other time. Only just before a complete stop does it does it. If I’m able to brake slowly and creep up to a stop with having to push to hard on the brake peddle, I doesn’t do it. That’s why bleeding the brakes came to mind first. Real spongy feeling and the peddle almost goes to the floor, then I get the fast pulsating action and sound. I’ll keep you posted!

    i have a trailblazer too. i recently had several suspension parts replaced. after the job. i was experiencing the same. i had to disconeect the abs sensors in order for the brakes to work properly. so the trick is to clean it like you did in order to work?

    Did your rpms fluctuate at all? Did you feel a grind in the pedal?
    Im going to try to see if the abs fuse being out will give me an idea of what is going on.
    I replaced the abs sensor 3 months ago as the light came on. It fixed it, but then I got this current issue of brake pedal grind and rpms jumping. Another abs sensor replacement gave my truck a solid week with no issue.
    Hope it isnt a module or something. May just run it without any abs nonsense.

      How it turn out?

    • @operationNOBO
      @operationNOBO 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williamharper9356 It was the bearings/hub assembly needed to be replaced. Not abs sensor related. Tool 45 min for them to hammer it off on the lift. So if one abs sensor doesnt fix it, it is the hub. Running without abs is obviously not an issue.

    Good Explanation that makes sense, If not set correct air gap it may jump down speed so thinks its lost traction and abs kicks in

    Interesting to watch! However when your steering wheel went right on stopping, and you said to do the opposite side sensor, why did you do the RIGHT sensor not the left?

    • @TheDaninator
      @TheDaninator  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I did both. I started on the passenger side, only because I had the wheel off doing a different repair. Just figured on going ahead and cleaning both.

    • @vorexis
      @vorexis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do the opposite on which way the steering wheel pulls because the steering wheel is pulling right due to the abs kicking in on the left side and the pads not completely grabbing the rotor.
