How often do you remove the excess fertilizer water that builds up in the aquaponic style tubs as well as the dirted tubs?
Good question. In the hydro tubs I spray more and the water slowly rises. But I actually don’t typically remove any water. Once all the plants grow in I harvest them, at that point the hydroton is mostly submerged. Then I drain the tub and restart.
With soil I spray veryyy lightly. Just like one or two passes over the plants. And I’ve been dialing back how often I spray. Maybe a few times a week now. But I do open the tubs just about every day. This allows humidity to escape. Basically I try to balance spray with humidity loss such that the soil moisture content remains pretty consistent. This way I don’t have to remove water. 👌🏼

Nowhere that I am aware of. I manually pollinated some Anubias flowers and collected the seed myself :)
Do you plan on adding dwarf hairgrass on your website?
I would love to. I’ll likely need to grow that species in a separate system as it has demands a bit different than my current species. Something I hope to get setup one day soon but that will be down the road a ways I suspect👍

Hi love your content! I have one question: would you recommend to propagate the anubias also in plastic tubs or is the aquarium better?
Either work the same 👍. I just grow Anubias in the aquarium because I ran out of space on the rack 😂

Sir for the duckweed maybe you can try adding some topsoil in the tank. I keep Azolla and it multiply extremely well...
Hello! I use miracle grow potting soil for my soil based tubs. Pebbles are hydroton.
Good eye. Stem plants seem to appreciate soil. With rhizome plants i prefer pebbles because it is less messy to harvest. They also grow well in soil though, just messy.
I have used EI for aquariums. For emersed growth you could probably use that same idea but you would probably want to boost your dosing. Because you don’t have fish in emersed tubs you can get away with more nutrients and boost growth that way.
I may not have mentioned it but for duckweed I am using hydroponic nutrients in the water. I bet soil would work though!

I would suspect yes. But that is getting pretty warm. I would give it a shot with a small test setup :)
Can the emersed plants be grown in our tank directly?
Yup! Most aquarium plants you find in stores are grown emersed. Same same. Just plant them and leave them alone 🌱
How warm ist the room ? 70°F?
70-80 Typically. Closer to 70 at night closer to 80 during the day. 👍
wold you be kind to talk in a bit more detail about fertilsers tipes used ,NPK concentrations,dilution,u use tap water?i only spray from my shrimp aquarium,i just started aomw bucephalandra and java ferns in clay pebles,i realy wold ned some help not to melt them,with not to much or too much fertilizing,thank you
I usually just follow the fertilizer recommendations. For spray you will want to follow the foliar feed recommendation for the substrate solution I follow the standard recommendations or even a bit more dilute. Aquatic plants don't need much ferts. Ive used different NPK concentrations with largely the same results but right now I am using a 10-5-14.
Very nice. I tried to propagate anubias using your method (plastic container), but it didn't grow at all and then rotted or get squashy. Have you Tips for me?

@@AquariumPlantLab A normal 6 Watt fluorescent tube, Hydroton and a fertilizer for plants/flowers with NPK 4-1-2 which i have tripled to get 12-3-6 (6 tsp/gallon), couldn't get a 9-3-6. I sprayed once a day. The plant that i used come out of a tank.
How long did you have the light on? Did you have nutrient solution at the bottom of the hydroton as well or were you just foliar feeding?
@@AquariumPlantLab Last the light were on 8 hours a day and 4 at the beginning, I changed that because the light is not very bright. I just foliar feeding, later i added some water at the bottom. It was only one plant and i think it was to much fertilizer and maybe not enought light. I can send you a picture of the setup.

Here are some suggestions, you might already be doing these. But make sure you have a lid to trap in humidity, make sure your foliar spray isn’t too strong. should be about 1/4 strength recommendation on bottle. Add nutrient water at recommended concentration at the bottom of the substrate. If those all fail you might need to get some dedicated hydroponic fertilizer. 👍
Hopefully you can answer, but what’s the reason for using such deep tubs? Why not get lower tubs ?
Tub height really depends on species. For stem plants the tubs in this video are actually just about perfect. For most rhizome plants you could go lower for sure. I chose these tubs because they were readily available and economical. Now I am growing mainly stems in them, so it worked out perfect. 👌

Do you get any fungus or mold? Do you use h2o2?
Good question! I should do a video on this soon. I have had a few bouts of mold. Generally only in tubs that have mostly run through their course and the plants have been harvested several times. Usually at that point I need to change out the soil anyway. I do use diluted h2o2 spray to treat spots of mold. Works great! I usually go about 50/50 h2o2 to water maybe a bit weaker than that.

Ya I could see that being an issue with dry start. I tend to have lots of springtails in my tubs which probably helps prevent mold outbreaks in the beginning. I wonder if people could use springtails 🤔
If you pick out the best of the plants to sell, that would mean you are selectively breeding for the worst traits in the long turn
Do you have a way of keeping a good mother set of plants to pass on good genetics ?
Both great questions. Pretty much all of the propagation I do is through asexual reproduction or vegetative reproduction. This is done by dividing plants. There is no sharing of genetics. So in essence all plants are genetic clones of each other. When I say I sell the best what I mean is I pick the plants that are the oldest and most grown in. Most of the plants I grow end up looking pretty much the same when given enough time. The limiting factor is time. 🌱
