      Thank you! And I appreciate your thinking about supporting the farm :). Good idea on waiting until weather warms a bit. I am getting in 72 hour heat packs here soon too, which will help with cold temps but still not a bad Idea to delay until temps are a bit warmer if they are dipping into the 20s in your neck of the woods. Thanks again and cheers!

    So happy to have come across your channel!! Preparing to set up my 46g and 15g and 10g. It will be a bit, before I am ready to start planting, but, I will definitely be placing orders!! Only sad; there are 4 or 5 species, you do not have, that I really, really want. LOVE your channel and especially, APPRECIATED your video for capitalizing and managing the natural CO2 in the air! I have always preferred the low tech aquarium, and, you can absolutely have a healthy, lush, underwater garden, too! The only drawback is, there are some BEAUTIFUL aquatic plants, that simply do require CO2 injection and powerful lighting.

    I think spring tails won't survive much in this set up, since there's no ground or wood or anything for them to stay on it, feed on etc. Might be an odd suggestions, but if I were you, I'll be placing shrimps there. Look for the ones that aren't too sensitive (neocaradina) so they can graze the algae or something. But start with a few because it's an experiment. Fish will be a good idea if there's plenty of space (I placed guppy for my set up to control mosquito larvae haha)

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn’t put them in there lol. They made their way in on their own. Shrimp and fish are out of the equation because the hydroponic ferts are not compatible. That would work if I switched to aquarium ferts though 👍

    I little idea it cut down on energy bills. Connect these large totes with piping and just run one pump and heater in either end of the system and then circulate the water between them all. Obviously only if you decide to go ahead with you new method with the higher water level.

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea, though I trying to keep them all separate so they are mobile and self contained. The water pumps and air pump only use a few watts of electricity. Heaters are 50 watts. So these are very low cost to run anyhow 👍

    Hey, new setup is awesome. Real progression! Do you measure and adjust pH of the water? Have you run a traditional flood and drain in a hydroton setup? Seems like these would be the ideal plants for such a system..? Amazing stuff though - I'm in NZ and would definitely buy some if I could. :)

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My PH stays pretty stable between 6-7 so I typically don't make adjustments. I have not run a formal flood drain although I want to at some point. I have stayed away from that as it would require more electrical outlets and drilling into my tubs. I agree though a flood drain setup would almost certainly work very well!

    How do you deal with algae in your system? My aquariums have it eberywhere

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The static setup by design doesn't have much issue with algae because the water level is below the substrate. The riverine setup is still young so algae is always a possibility in that one. I have reduced my photoperiod under these setups to 8 hours to hopefully keep algae minimal. If it starts to get going then ill reduce the light even more. My biggest concern with the riverine setup is algae, by far. So far so good though!

    You mentioned that the new Java fern growth would be more vertical than the initial planting. Does that apply to the needle leaf Java fern as well?
    So far my best growth with needle leaf is submerged, but I haven’t tried any in shallow water yet. I may have to try shallow planting a spare aquarium and see what happens….

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of the growth I have seen with Needle I would say yes once established it will be more vertical as well. I too haven't had much success with needle in a more static setup. Hoping the riverine setup yields better results!

    Pond and ramshorn snails love to eat biofilm.
    Is your fertilizer safe for aquatic life?

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Biofilm hasn’t really been an issue. I had a small amount of it at the beginning but it’s pretty much under control now. Now the bubbler mainly provides gas exchange and a bit more circulation.
      The ferts I use in this setup are hydroponic ferts, which aren’t advertised to be compatible with critters like planted aquarium ferts are.
      Either way, I am trying to avoid snails to limit hitch hikers on my crop. I personally love pond snails though. I have loads of them in my personal planted tank! They are great little workers 😊

    cant the plants use fish waste as fertilizer instead of adding hydroponic ferts? or would adding a few guppies in there not be enough for all the plants

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would work to an extent but fish waste doesn't have all of the essential macro and micro nutrients found in hydroponic fertilizers or planted aquarium fertilizers. Thats why folks with planted tanks and fish still have to use planted tank fertilizer and substrate for best results. 👍

    I think your logo should be green, not just white! It is associated with vegetation and what you do (this is my opinion). Why not remove the pots and plant directly in the substrate? Is there any reason plants to be in the pots ?

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the input! The trick is that one logo doesn’t really work for all uses (website, TH-cam banner, video overlay, subscribe button, hats, stickers, etc.) so I think I need to make several versions for different uses. I’ve been thinking about adding green either to the just the leaf or to the entire background for select uses. Still needs work for sure. I think I’ll make a set of logos and then post a poll in the community tab and let everyone decide which is best :)
      As far as pots go. They aren’t required. I use them because it makes harvesting plants far, far more efficient. But for the average hobbyist pots aren’t necessary. 👍
