Excellent tour. I am impressed with your efforts to help other hobbyists who venture into their own farms. After 10 months my aquariums are lush with 4 different varieties of anubias grown emersed in my one tub. BTW, I use CO2 in my aquariums to keep the anubias growing well and have to stock Siamese algae eaters to control the black beard algae from forming on the anubias
I may do a video on that at some point! Really just depends on the species though. Stems typically take 20-45 days. Rhizome plants about 90 days. Moss a good 45 days. Floaters ~2 weeks for a good crop. There are some numbers anyway.
Are they emersed or submersed? If emersed I would check your nutrients to make sure they are balanced, also make sure humidity is high enough. If submersed then you probably have a nutrient deficiency, my bet would be nitrogen. 👍
the pots I use are technically not net pots but do have a number of holes in the bottom and do serve essentially the same function. So ferts get to the roots and roots grow out of the bottom of the pots. I like them because they are square and optimize use of space.
HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED TO AVOID ALGAE? :o I learned from you how to make a moss farm and it worked perfectly. But I have had some issues with algae. With the lights and the hidroponic nutrient water, it's almost for sure algae are going to grow. Love your stepuo BTW. Its awesome

Silica sand is better than clay balls . The biggest aquaponic guy in Australia switched all of his clay balls to silica sand . Better harvest on all of his vegetables , fruits and fish.

Thanks, it’s fun 😊! I’m always happy to meet people locally. I don’t have people to my property though for a number of reasons. Places I can meet folks include Clinton, freeland, and langley (WA). Outside of those areas it becomes cost prohibitive. That said I’ve had very few issues shipping plants though surprisingly. Mid winter is the hardest season but really only for shipments going to the Midwest and northeast when temps dip into the low twenties and lower. 👍
I'm having moss grow up the walls of my tub. I scratched the walls of tubs with 80 grit sandpaper and then use "dry start youghurt method" to cover walls of the tub
Various algaes haven’t been much of an issue for me. Plant dense that is one of the best things you can do to keep cyano/algae under control. I change soil out when plant growth starts to slow down or get leggy.
I can conclude that, high humidity, close lid is possible for most stem plants. For Rhizome plants like Anubias, or Bucephalandra, they should require ventilation. However you prove it by using a close lid (without any ventilation), this can be explain (I'm giving opinion based on my experience, so it might differ with anybody else) because the temperature at your location, especially at your "farm" isn't hot (it's really hot), dry like my country, hence why you can fully optimize for those plants. But trust me, you can't treat Bucephalandra (if you plan on) this way because they're not fond with too high humidity. Stems, yes, they're okay with it.
Do you grow Buce Emersed and your climate is hot and dry? Im curious because they are endemic to the rainforests of Borneo where it's hot and humid. FYI my Anubias setup stays between 70-80F (21-27c) year round and the airline constantly pushes fresh air in and old air out, so although there may not be visible holes in the system there is a good amount of ventilation occurring, though humidity remains high. Ive found that my Anubias really appreciates the airstone.
You have to keep the plants close as possible to their final environment else they will fail, example if you grow a plant in aeroponics it will develop air roots and will fail if move to a submerged system or if you propagate in a high humidity env and change it to a ventilated system without a gradual acclimatization it will also fail. The amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is critical ppl a common belief is that you put too much water in the plant and kill it but in fact you remover the air in the roots, the higher the oxygen concentration the higher is the nutrient absorbing rate and decrease the nutrient burn risk.

Absolutely they will grow in aquariums. Almost all commercially produced aquarium plants are grown above water 👍 (btw, immersed means underwater, emersed mean out of water)
At min 10:20 I have to say use a air stone or drain fill type setup. If you put a bucket or tote with low EC nutrients you can do a basic flood drain that has a lid . I bet you would double your growth time doing this. Seems small but it’s the difference of basic soil and hydroponics. One is slow one is fast . If you do fast you need the extra oxygen in the water or it will be stagnant and won’t as it’s into the roots evenly.
I believe I heard you say in one of your videos that the concentration of fertilizer in the water is too high for aquarium fish. Did I hear that right? If I heard that wrong and it is ok for fish to be in the water, I'm thinking about adding 1 foot by 4 foot flood trays over my two 55 gallon breeding tanks. Pump from the tank up to the trays. Overflows out of the trays at the desired depth in the tray. With all of that expanded clay in there it would act like a giant bacteria bed with the plants aiding in nitrate removal.
If you want to have fish in the grow setup I would not use hydroponic ferts as they are concentrated and not meant for that purpose. In such a case I would recommend sticking with some sort of fert made specifically for aquariums (example, Easy Green by Aquarium Coop or Thrive by NilocG) and dosed according to instructions. I imagine this would work well and that the added nutrients from the fish waste would be helpful as well. 👍
hey man I love your videos as always. I'm just wondering what do you think about using vermi tea (aka worm tea) as a source of nutrient for the plants in exchange of a hydroponic solution? I'm planning to propagate my aquatic plants for profit too and was thinking of going on the organic side like vermi tea or mineralized fish waste as a source of nutrient for them, also in line with common aquaponic set-ups but without the fish. I would love to hear your thoughts and as always you are such a huge inspiration.

do you use springtails in ur tubs? i love your farm btw, i'm in the process of starting my own
Good luck with your farm! Springtails make it into many of my systems and breed happily. I don’t add them on purpose though. 😊
