Great Mother's Day homily but it left me worried: My two children, though brought up in the Faith are estranged from God and me. I have never met my grandchildren, 22 years I have prayed and done penance for them. Monika did not have to endure this that long and she got to see and "harangue" her son. I have only silence; a kind soul once let me know that I have grandchildren. My question is: Will God judge e very harshly? How much is it my fault? I pray every day to the Sorrowful Mother for their reconciliation with God, with each other, and me. Recently somebody considered holy told me that she thinks it is my fault, that I have been too strict and should have embraced them (with their youthful, but serious sins). I am not doing well today, it is a hard day because It is a day in which salt is rubbed into the never-healing wounds. Is this a punishment for me or is it permitted for sanctification. I am alone since their father had abandoned us and I am not sure what God wants me to do, or how He wants me to look at it.

I believe God will only judge you harshly if you stop being their mother and surrender to their straying -- i.e. "Oh, well! What can I do? (ho-hum!)" If you keep being the instrument of his word that God called you to be for your children, then it is on them for ignoring it, not on you for neglecting that life-long call. And have faith in God's working, through you and other means with you. (And add Monica to those you pray to. We know God listens to HER prayers as well).
