    Sold them for years. Saw them come in for service after thousands and thousands miles. Never saw any damage to any of the radiators. It's almost like Suzuki knew what they where doing when they built it. One of the most honest ADV made.

    I had a 2003 DL1000. Bought it used (with 410 miles on the clock) and sold it 95K+ miles later. And it's still going strong with its new owner. In 60+ years of riding, I have never had as much motorcycle for as little money as the VStrom. If it had a bigger alternator and shaft drive, I'd still have the bike.
    Oh yeah - and I put a set of virtually indestructible Jesse bags on it.

      I had a 2004 DL1000 for a couple of years. Worst thing I ever did was sell it to buy a Harley. Well, two Harleys and a Ducati later, I'm back on a V-Strom 1050. Sooo glad to be back on a Suzuki.

      I too have almost 50 years on bikes, had almost any kind imaginable, 4 airhead BMWs, ( still have 2 pre 80s 😁) and a 6 cylinder Goldwing. Have an 05 bought used with 17K, equipped with all the Givi Factory bags, crash bars, a serious bash plate and upgraded fuse panel/ power outlets etc. Once I got rid of that horrible factory seat, this is ergonomically one of the most pleasing, comfortable bikes I've ever owned. I'm tall, so the leg drop is so comfortable. Had the lean run problem in first 1/4 throttle, but got the ECU juiced properly, easing parking lot navigation ! In the end, that motor is anvil tough, begs to be revved, is hardly stressed at 90, and leaps to life if you need to move quickly. The bike tracks so perfectly at speed, and it's LCG makes it lean in turns so effortlessly, my sport riding friends don't lose me so easily. It's not the best at anything, but like old airheads, it does everything well, and is stone reliable. Valves are not any easy project, but it's schedule is long. Only thing I might do to dial in to my tastes, would be to add 2 teeth to rear sprocket, making the power delivery more linear. It's high geared, and not easy managing at low speeds. Of course you need a Speedo Healer if you do that...so I'm rarely out of second in city riding ! I rarely ride in town, so not that big of a concern. As one person who ride it said: It's one of those bikes that "the sum is greater than the parts used". It will outlast my riding time most likely, but I might do one more buy, getting the 1050 and the ABS....which saved my butt once when on a borrowed bike....so I would like that feature.

    A very good overview of the Vstrom. I have a 2014 1000 Vstrom, after owning several Beemers, Hondas, Kawasaki, I’m really
    Enjoying the Suzuki and it’s versatility. Comfy ergos, great handling, lots of low end grunt and surprisingly quick! It does need,
    many after market accessories to make it off road ready, but that’s part of the fun too. A lot of bang for your buck bike!

We ended up trading in part because the weight and my ego wouldn't allow her to have a faster bike so I was going to buy a 2020 1050XT. The abs doesn't need any aftermarket hack..you .just pull out the ABS fuse at the same time as you are letting some air out when you get off the road and on the trail...
    The luggage...it's not 1997 any more. Soft luggage is the way to go for offroading.

    • @PracticalTacticalSheepDog
      @PracticalTacticalSheepDog 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an adventure bike, 90% of its life is going to be on pavement. I attempted to take soft luggage on a cross country 4000 mile trip about 6 months ago. Not going to name the brand because I don't need a bunch of highly invested fanboys yelling at me.... BUT I will say a good well-known in the ADV/Dual Sport world name brand set of bags was constantly working themselves loose and flopping around at 90+ mph. Did seem to be an issue at lower speeds but consistently as soon as I got out on the interstate and really got rolling the straps would slowly start loosening up. Finally ended up tightening them back down and wrapping the buckle and excess strap with duct tape to hold it in place. Which of course made it a PITA to get into my luggage every time I wanted to lube the chain or stop for the night. I would use the bags again for an overnight camping trip locally, perhaps even the Mid-Atlantic BDR since I wouldn't be going overly fast. But never again for a long distance touring type of trip, hard luggage is the way to go for serious pavement miles at high speeds.

    • @xxxenricop
      @xxxenricop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PracticalTacticalSheepDog completely agree! Not going anywhere over 70 for a long time myself with soft luggage. But falling and dropping the bike has never been so comfortable 😛.
      Don't have to worry too much about breaking the luggage, if I brush a tree I am less likely to be yanked off the bike by said 🌲. Bike fell on my ankle and I got a tiny bruise but was very aware I would have suffered much worst had I had hard panniers.
      It's 2 very different user cases I think. Fast speeds touring and adv riding.
      I do disagree that 90 % is pavement for an adventure bike....at least not smooth fast pavement.
      I think when on an "adventure" my average speed hardly ever goes over 40mph.
      The good thing about this bike is that you can really do them both pretty well.

    • @PracticalTacticalSheepDog
      @PracticalTacticalSheepDog 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xxxenricop honestly I think 90% is probably a conservative guess for your average rider. I ride a full on dual sport and even my bike realistically see's probably 85% pavement. I can ride 150 miles of pavement to get to 10-20 miles of trails. I put 17,000 miles on my DR650 in a year and a half of ownership which for your AVERAGE rider, I would say is quite a bit. Out of those 17k I'd guess probably less than 1k were true off road with another 2k being dirt roads.

    My 18 model (AL8) has been great ride, nothing beats a V Strom for reliability.
    That said they have a few weak points:
    Clutch chudder (design flaw) can send vibration through the whole bike usually between 3 & 4K, there’s an aftermarket engineering fix that’s permanent - odd that Suzuki hasn’t changed the design of the clutch basket / bearing interface to remedy.
    The standard screen is usually replaced by most owners (turbulence)
    The standard halogen headlight isn’t the best, but you can change the entire unit for around £350 (same in USD)
    Corrosion can be an issue if you don’t stay on top of it.
    Valve clearance checks every 15000 miles
    Good fuel consumption/ tank range over 200 miles
    The bike really handles the twisties
    It’s top heavy when you’re moving it around by hand (easy to drop)
    High seating position
    On the face lift models 2018 onwards electronically linked braking system
    Cornering ABS
    ABS pumps cost around £2000, so make sure you purge old brake fluid out of the pump, two ways of doing this - over 18mph lock back and front brakes independently activate ABS, change fluid, and repeat and repeat and repeat, or have the dealer purge the system by electronically activating the ABS pump.
    They can be snatchy under 3000 rpm (fuelling) ensure the the throttle bodies are sync’d up, or you can fit a booster plug (easy and comparatively cheap) which improves things no end.
    The later 1050 model is an improvement on the 1000 in lots of areas, but they have changed the character of the engine, more rev happy, not as torquey low down (max torque developed at 6000 rpm instead of 4000 rpm)

    Suzuki makes some really nice bikes. Especially the V-storm 1000. The bestest flaw with this bike is, your selling it. It has a 50/50 chance of being a turd. At least check the gas tank for rust before cutting it loose. Buyer beware. There not checking it over for you no matter what they say or how nice they are. Super nice guy but dang man at least make sure these bikes are running properly before sending them out the door. Love your videos it just sucks you burned me on a bike sale. After 2k in work done, so I could at least ride my bike man.... it sucks. 4 new injectors, gas tank rusted out had to put acid in it and have it recoated. Not to mention the battery that fell apart leaving me at the gas station....on first test ride. I sent you pictures. Dont hate on me for being disappointed. But now the busa is pulling the front tire off the ground as it should. 9k+ later. Killing me man.

      Woodrow Jenkins, I gave you a thumbs up, but the real problem with the purchase is YOU... You learned, "Let the buyer beware" and you learned that YOU are responsible for what you purchase USED... Don't blame them for just complying with the law and having a safety check done on the bike. They buy it and sell it. Their job is being a "central buying point" for the purchaser.... Your job is to look into the gas tank and say, "I don't like all that rust." Cry elsewhere, you made your choice and your choice was to NOT DO YOUR JOB...

    Beak is not a German discovery, Suzuki was the first to introduce it and the Germans were just as inspired by it as other manufacturers. Gs has more "inspired" solutions, e.g. BMW shift cam from VTEC. Now, Suzuki has a better solution in the GSXR for the Variable Valve Timing System and it is called SR-VVT.

    I have 2006 Suzuki Vstrom 650 and,I love it! I dont like the fact that new ones have the beak and only 1 headlight. I guess after my current one I will not be buying their new and "improved" version. Two headlights is a must for every motorcycle!

    I never see a review if a modded V-Strom. I have a 2014 that I replaced the full exhaust, high flow air filter, and a power commander. What a beast. Night and day change. Now it feels closer to a Multistrata than a Strom. Anyone else do something similar?

    I think it’s the perfect balance of road and light off road…. It will get to camping spots etc while touring just fine..
    If I want to go off road I’ll take my 450

    I got 2. A 2009 650 that I've ridden 165,000km and counting. And a 2014 1000 with 93,000km on it. My favourite thing to do is pull up next to a GS rider complete with his Ewan/Charlie costume. They look down their nose at the peasant on a Suzuki. Then they eat my dust as I disappear into the distance haha.

    Go through phases with wanting a bike. I'm set on wanting an ADV and a couple of years ago nearly bought the 650 of this. Right now I'm determined to get a royal Enfield Himalayan as my starter bike (when funds allow), but will probably upgrade to this after a few years.

      Hello, i bought a himalayan as my first bike. Honestly i would not recommend it. I had absolutely 0 experience on a motorcycle before i bought it, and after owning it for 3 weeks found it lacking in power. Have a hard time keeping up with traffic in a 55mph zone. Bough a v strom 1000 and love it. I'd recommend the 650 as a first bike

      And he should. You have no right being on property that isn’t yours to ride on. I don’t care how much snow is on the ground. You ride on my property without my explicit permission,and there’s gonna be big problems.

      @@bctruck I agree, I never do it. I stay on trails or where I know I can ride, I have farmer friends with hundreds of acres that I can ride on. If someone gets hurt on their property it's a liability, I do know farmers who will shoot at trespassers and I don't blame the one bit..

    I fell doing 45 mph. I had basic fox riding gloves. The cheap protection they provide ripped off the back. Rocks went threw the palm padding into to my hand. It's kinda saved me but understanding having better gloves would have kept me from being hurt. Removed my right ear. WEAR A HELMET no matter what.

    Where are you getting your weights? A 2015 V-Strom 1000 is 503lbs, a 2021 Honda AT base is 501lbs (2lbs lighter, not heavier) and a 2021 BMW R1250GSA is 591lbs (or 88lbs heavier not 25lbs)...

  • @MBergyman
    @MBergyman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So, basically, a 2015 Vstrom 1000 is all the bike you'll ever need for literally anything unless you just want to hit off-roads hard and frequently. And, you can find them priced much more affordably than the most all of the new bikes. What is insurance for you, compared to a 650? I am looking to eventually upgrade from a 2009 Vstrom 650.
