i love you so much always Jerry and miss you so much. You were awesome Dirty Dancing , Law and Order and singing. Your amazing. i wish I had of had a daddy like you were in Dirty Dancing growing up. Your family was blessed to have you xxxx love you always fly high xxxx
Watching him so many times on LAW & ORDER, it was easy to forget that Jerry Orbach was a real old-time Broadway song-and-dance man with a Tony Award and numerous stage and film hits to his credit, as well as a voice artist for many animated shows and films. Thanks for this reminder of his many talents. I still miss the ever-loving daylights out of that man.
What a treasure. What must it have been like so many years ago in that little Sullivan Street Playhouse when the young Jerry Orbach stepped out on that intimate stage and sang this song for the first time? This is a splendid example of a great star allowing the song to do its job rather than overselling it.
Jerry's an inspired soul who I admire deeply... with a career on the stage in this musical and then later on as an iconic TV presence. What resonated with me in his work was his portrayal of a recovering alcoholic and detective on TV and his character's struggles have been very much my own.
My first exposure to the great Jerry Orbach was about 1962 on the Ed Sullivan Show when he sang this tune - "The Fantasticks" was about a year old then. Four years later at the end of my h.s. years, I was cast as Charlie Davenport (the character role with 2 great songs) in my school's production of "Annie Get Your Gun." Our director insisted that we get Ethel Merman's Broadway revival cast album, and my role of Charlie was played and sung by - Jerry Orbach. I wrote a significant bit of the Wikipedia article on JO, including the lede, and I dug up a line from the WaPo obit: the called Orbach "one of the last bona fide leading men of the Broadway musical and global celebrity on television."
How can I not have a mad crush on this extraordinary man? The more I hear Jerry Orbach's voice the more enamored I become. I close my eyes and imagine he's singing to me.
Something i just thought about.... Jerry Orbach starred in the play and later starred un Dirty Dancing with Jennifer Grey. Jennifer's father starred as Luisa's father in the screen version of The Fantasticks !! A full circle !!!
He was a bona fide Broadway and off-Broadway musical star long before he turned to dramatic acting. He was the first to sing and record this American pop classic,
I wasn't born yet when Jerry Orbach starred in "The Fantasticks" even though I heard the original recording. While watching him play detective Lennie Briscoe on "Law & Order," my mother pointed out that Jerry was the original El Gallo. On "L&O," Jerry made me laugh with his sarcastic humor that it was easy to forget his Broadway background. Thanks for posting this reminder of his singing abilities. Jerry is deeply missed, yet fondly remembered.
I am not sure about that but it is very possible that the melody was in his head, as his father, my grandfather was a Methodist minister. Oh what I would give to ask him. Yesterday 2.28.22 was the 4th anniversary of his Uncle Harvey's passing :(
In addition to Jerry Orbach's original version, there have been fine cover versions by Ed Ames, Steve Rossi, Sandy Duncan, and(last by not least!) Julie Andrews.

I miss him very much, too.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤💔💔💔
The first time that Jerry did this song for the Fantasticks cast album, he was only 24 years old.
24 years old and with such a mature voice…
@@flannerymonaghan-morris4825 His voice takes me to another place. It doesn't matter what he's singing.

I was there a bunch of times.
Jerry truly was a special gentleman. As others have said, he could truly do it all. I miss you Jerry x
He was my late mom's favorite actor on Law and Order. I hope they get to meet.
My parents saw this off-Broadway in NY in the early 1960's with Jerry. This is HIS song. I stopped watching L&O after he died - he was so great!
US misses you Mr. Orbach.
Saw him on Broadway in Chicago. What a great talent! Gone way too soon.

I am certain this inspiration would bring a lot of joy to Jerry. He seems like that kind of guy.
Beautiful voice and interpretation. And of course, also a great actor. One of the few who really could do it all
I miss him so much.
Me too. I have no idea why I felt like looking up this song and this actor today…
So glad I did.
Have a lovely day 🤗
OMG Lennie Briscoe you have such a beautiful voice ...
It's hard to believe you're gone, Jerry.

The first Jerry Orbach, sublime

Thanks. Love this song. And Jerry did it best.
perfection.
This is a timeless song.
RIP Harvey Schmidt. :(
Didn't know he could sing 😮 fantastic 😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
From The Fantasticks. The longest running off Broadway show ever. Didn’t he star in it in 1960?
I saw him in Promises, Promises on Broadway. Years later, I didn't recognize him in crime drama. What a shock to see he was the same person.

Delightful. I still wonder if Schmidt built the melody on a motif from the Welsh hymn tune, "Hyfrydol."
I am not sure about that but it is very possible that the melody was in his head, as his father, my grandfather was a Methodist minister. Oh what I would give to ask him. Yesterday 2.28.22 was the 4th anniversary of his Uncle Harvey's passing :(
Adored him...miss Ed Ames and ANYBODY that did this beautiful song

I remember The Fantasticks
Try NOT to remember when i was young and had choices, and could have pursued a REAL career.
Definitely so I try to hide that part of my life cause it's too painful to reminse.
Yep it's a terrible thing when you settle for a job at the dry cleaners sucking the farts out of underwear! 🤣
Sweet.
