A great drag race, but it would be more realistic if in addition to full fuel, each aircraft was loaded out with their typical compliment of weapons for the intercept mission. That way gross weight and drag factors would be factored in.

Also figure in the range/speed differences between the missiles carried at the time. I think even the early generation AIM-120 or the AIM-54 _might_ have given the TomKitty a chance at this race.
In that case we will be able to also see who can actually hit the target first with their missiles which would take into account the radar and the missiles.
That will probably be more accurate for seeing which plane is actually the best at intercepting.

Unless you know for an absolute fact that the bogey is hostile, it would not be a good idea to launch a missile at max range without VID.
There needs to be all aircraft video for which is the quickest to intercept INCLUDING a cold start.

While I think this is a great idea, I don’t think it would work unless he excluded all the aircraft with low fidelity models as they start up unrealistically fast!

It's interesting that both the F-14 and Mirage were a lot slower today whilst the improvement in the Flanker was almost incredible. All very interesting in that it looks like pilot ability makes more of a difference than the driver in F1.
Flight profile is important!
Honestly, I would have liked to see the F-14A be used instead of the B-model. The A being not insignificantly faster than the B in terms of top speed should have allowed it to keep up better. Would have been nice to see an A and a B in there instead of 2 SU-27s, but I guess the Flankers were justified just because of their different strategies. I still say the F-14A in a top speed race should be able to beat the F-15C as well, it just might take a while to get wound up all the way.
Cap, I demand a redo with more Tomcats!
Last time the flanker ran out of fuel it was pulling ahead before that
@@ApacheVR-4According to the official data, the F-15C is slightly faster than the F-14A at any altitude. Even assuming that the F-14 can marginally beat the F-15 in top speed, the F-15 can climb much faster, and thus it can reach high altitude far sooner. The rival would be defeated anyway. The outcome can change of we take in account the missile loading, because the Tomcat suffer a bit less than the Eagle from external loads drag.
I'd love to see this with the requirement that you have to have full guns load, 2x BVR AAM, 2x WVR AAM, and fuel and go back to the airbase and land, just like a real world intercept.
Could've added the SAAB Viggen as well, although it's not an Interceptor, it's fast as hell. I think Mach 2.

There are 2 different Viggens. The JA37 and the AJ37. The JA is the fighter, the AJ is the ground attack.

Scramble from cold start, intercept at a shorter range, shoot down 1 bomber each, and then land safely back at base.
I like that idea.
You should really start these races from rollout. The planes in the back of the order are necessarily disadvantaged. The Mig-31 and F-14 got going almost 20 seconds before the last flanker and mirage just because the other planes were in their way.
would be interesting to see how the F106 would do in this scenario it was used through the mid 80's and an interceptor.
This was a really good race! Great Video, Cap! Congrats to all the Reaper Pilots! Loved the unique paint schemes too.
Another great race, but I kinda wish you had put a human pilot (Violet?) in the Foxhound, it would have been interesting to see if a human could coax the same level of performance that the MiG-31 showed in the last race without blowing an engine or running out of fuel. Just an idea incase you decide to for a 3rd 80s race in the future. 👍
Hi Cap, extreme skill challenge: let your team land on the "side" of the Inguri dam. With the F/A-18 and the F-14 it is possible with a little bit of cheating (headwind straight from the dam, some 10-15 knots are sufficient. F/A-18 and F-14 could do it that way. Challenge is to pull up such that the forward movement is almost zero when the wheels touch the dam.
Bonus: let another aircraft fly over the dam and the "landed" aircraft have to shoot it down with AIMs (after they took off).

@@grimreapers Yes, I saw those videos. Now just do the Harrier stunt with a Hornet or Tomcat :-) it is possible but quite a challenge. You have to fly relative slow and pitch up at the right moment.
Maybe a race that involves elements of acceleration, top speed and breaking. Maybe a fast straight and the odd tight turn that requires a slower speed.
Gotta keep an eye on exhaust temps, IRL one wouldn't run to destruction.
Most Soviet/Russian/Chinese engines are scrap after any extending afterburning.
I haven't seen the previous races but the mig 23 would also be interesting. In some situations it out accelerates the f-14
As expected the SU-27 can fly back and land without an issue.
I don't know if this is possible, but it would be nice to have the live telemetry from each aircraft on the side of the screen.

Mig 29 was built for rough field and forward deployment. Didn’t have the legs but it was good at its job.

We've done that race before. B starts off stronger but A catches and passes around mach 2.

The real one does Mach 2.2 but is it really and interceptor? If we're going to open up the competition to all aircraft then the F-111 may be the fastest @ 2.5 But it would be interesting!

As a usn guy in 80s. F 14 and F15. Get up, shoot long range missiles. Bomber dies. Their main purpose
I heard SR-71 pilot say climb profile, climb to 15K or 20K go SS to 1.2 or 1.3 and start slow climb gaining altitude and speed. But that might be hear say. Can you redo with missiles, like to see if the F-14 splash the bandit before anyone else!
For an intercept, you could have considered an F-106A. Probably could have flown the entire distance at Mach 2+ as It's external tanks were Mach 2 rated.
surely a zoom climb by the F-15C to the thinner air to start with would give it a much better shout at this rather than a steady climb
that's a great example of an intercept.
Now do the same thing loaded to kill a pair of bombers. put a pair of era appropriate missiles on each and see who gets the kill(s). Would be really interesting to see how each set of weapons systems works with or against the host fighter.
The Tomcat may be middle of the pack, but dat aim54 tho.
As long as you don't mind landing in the ocean and only need 1 pass the SU-27 is pretty good.
Seems like the interceptors should carry at LEAST a couple of sidewinders (or an equal version) in addition to their bags.

Next the ultimate intercept, catch a SR-71 at speed and altitude. There is at least 1 (possible 2) fighters that have done it.

They let an A.I. fly the Mig 31 because reasons, the A.I. doesn't taxi well with humans so they had to follow it.

Trying to get it working in game. Some planes are currently not working.
There was an old DOS/Amiga simulator, Jet Pilot, which had several versions of the Lightning to fly. And F-104s and Mig-21s included.
Very decent flight model, great simulation. Great and difficult missions.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO START AT THE SAME TIME (and on the same line)! The initial conditions can often dictate final outcomes (physics), so taking 1 extra minute on takeoff can end up with a difference of several kilometers over time! Redo please, and everyone needs to go on full afterburner on start.
Exactly - at mach 2 you are doing over half a kilometer per SECOND.
Yep. The F-15 had at least eight planes stretched out in front of it with afterburners lit while it was idling. At 8:36 there's nine in front of it in the air. A little over a minute later it's about to be in 4th place but still 10+ miles behind. By 14:00 it has taken 2nd place and is basically matched with the 27 in speed but has made up half of the distance between them from earlier.

No Tornado F3? It wasn't much of a dog fighter but it was fast in a straight line and had decent range.

I agree, I think their top speed is a little high in game.
Um, where is the F-104 Starfighter? And F-4 Phantom II ? Both were known for their speed, and served through the 1980's And the F-104 may be a teeny, tiny bit slower than the F-14, but it kicks it ass in getting to altitude.
Finally a realistic race
I think one of the greatest debates in addition to comparing speed is whether we are “valued” viewers or “vallied” viewers. These are the important questions. 🧠👑

Cap you need to remove the pylons on the 29 to reduce drag , you noticed the F-16 is sleek underneath but you still have the pylons on to drag in fact noone else has pylond on but you .... And in the 29 you need to climb in stages to preserve speed :) tanks empty at 3.5 tons......

The first F-15E's were built in 1986, where are they with the CFTs and more powerful -229 engines? They would win the race for sure!

@@grimreapers iirc the 220's were installed in the F-15C/D and the -229's were in the F-15E model. The F-15 was also the first to super cruise (before the Raptor and the Black Widow II) back in the 1990's with some experimental GE and P&W engines that were essentially the same engines used on the ATF but first tested in the F-15 (77-0139 and 87-0180).
Program go-ahead was announced 24 February 1984; first flight of first production F-15E (86-0183) 11 December 1986; first delivery to Luke AFB, Arizona, 12 April 1988; first delivery 29 December 1988 to 4th Wing at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina. Small number of F-15Es used for trials with 3246th Test Wing at Eglin AFB, Florida, and 6510th TW (later identified as the 412th TW from October 1992) at Edwards AFB, California; trials include 87-0180 with GE F110-GE-129 engines in place of F100s; the P&W F100-PW-229 first flown in F-15E of 6510th TW on 2 May 1990 (although I thought they flew in late 1989 in 77-0139).
The GE engines were far and away the most powerful and were in excess of 29,000 pounds of static thrust. At idle on the ground, double hearing protection was needed. I measured (with a dB meter) over 140 dB at idle on the ground near the intakes while getting ready to launch the bird. I believe that this special variant of the GE -129 was making 34,000 lbs of static thrust.
Initially, two Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220 turbofans, each rated for take-off at 104.3 kN (23,450 lb st), installed, with afterburning. USAF aircraft 135 onwards (90-0233), built from August 1991, have 129.4 kN (29,100 lb st) Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229s, which also ordered for Saudi F-15S. Internal fuel in foam-filled structural wing tanks and six Goodyear fuselage tanks, total capacity 7,643 litres (2,019 US gallons; 1,681 Imp gallons). Simmonds fuel gauge system. Optional conformal fuel tanks (CFT) attached to side of engine air intakes, beneath wing, each containing 2,737 litres (723 US gallons; 602 Imp gallons). Provision for up to three additional 2,309 litre (610 US gallon; 508 Imp gallon) external fuel tanks. Maximum total internal and external fuel capacity 20,044 litres (5,295 US gallons; 4,409 Imp gallons).
