Very well done! I saw the original broadcast back in '66, but I was only 8 at the time, so details are fuzzy now. I only remembering watching Star Trek back then, and wanting to be Captain Kirk!

I was only 2 at the time, but I still have memories of back then. I remember wondering why the costumes and intercoms were different (this was the third episode aired). A little later I figured this should have been the first episode (apparently, I was already familiar with differences between the first episode and later episode of shows).

I was 7 then and remember it (fuzzy too). I had a fairly early bedtime then, but this was the only TV show my mom (my parents had just separated) would allow me to stay up to watch.

I have watched this episode a countless number of times, and I have to say the DVD version is far superior because it touches on subjects that were still considered as "taboo" for network TV in the 1960s. Example: Kirk's unspoken lines with Spock in the chess game. Kirk implies that Spock has "bad blood" but Spock had mentioned earlier "one of his ancestors had married a human female" (of course referring to Sarek and Amanda Grayson), but the deleted line "but you may learn to enjoy it one day" was the taboo line, as interracial dating and marriage was still outlawed in 1965 in many southern states and that people would take offense to the connotation by Kirk. Plus where Mitchell trails behind Yeoman Smith. There was never heard of womanizing on network TV, and that too was considered risque to air. There are so many reasons why scenes were cut or extended, but the main concern in 1965 was the issue of censorship and the broadcast of "taboo" subjects. I still favor the DVD version because it is more dark and raw, and compelling. I welcome any contradictions to my post here.

I wanna put this out there that the pilot version of the episode is now included on the 2021 Blu-ray boxset of the series. So if your worried missing out, don't. It's a bonus feature on the sixth disc of the third season, for some reason, but hey it's still there.

I said it before in a comment when you were looking through "Where No Man..." - the line "...but you may learn to enjoy it some day" is one I am sure that Roddenberry et. al. later greatly regretted cutting, because it prefigured a central development in the on-screen humanizing of Spock's character, all the way into the feature films and "Next Generation."

I have Star Trek, the old series on VHS cassette and I really like it. I did not know that there were a number of different versions of the pilot episode. One thing is that it is being screened repeatedly here in the UK, but it is the "tarted up" version with CGI - is it still possible to get the mono grainy 1960s version of Star Trek on DVD or Blu-Ray ? Some how, for me at least, the modern effects seem to spoil the show.

Those very first few episodes, Earthlings in space in the 23rd century---to me, it seemed like the whole prospect of Starfleet personnel were exclusively "human". For a series set in the distant future some 200-300 years, there was little to none in the way of "alien personnel" aboard any given Starfleet starship or starbase.
Spock was an "alien", yes; but he was relatively humanoid.
These days, (and going back to the advent of Star Wars in the mid '70s), there are alien personnel a dime a dozen within any human organization.

the name Tiberius appeared long after TOS ended. And incidentally it's a ridiculous name - embarrassingly bad because it;s totally unbelievable. What parents would give their Iowa-born son the name of a tyrannical Roman emperor, in between the simple and direct names James & Kirk? Absurdly pretentious. James Napoleon Kirk, James Odysseus Kirk, it's in that league.

not sure if this is the right place to post this question, but did Kirk have the option to not attempt the galaxy barrier probe? After all, they had just learned that the Valiant's destruction was a result of its crossing of the 'barrier'.
I realize this is 20/20 hindsight, but that probe cost quite a few lives according to the story. In fact, Kirk ended up losing three of his senior staff: Dehner, Mitchell, and lieutenant Kelso.
Actually Kirk would have bought the farm as well if not for Doctor Dehner.
Think about that. Your helmsman, your navigator, and a good psychiatrist, all dead because of that mission.
And it might sound crazy, but I was thinking a non mutated Sally Kellerman as a regular on Star Trek might have been pretty cool.

Some may have a very strong loyalty to the original effects. Understood. Controversy aside, it's nice work in this presentation. The background star field is a nice thought. .... However, you must concede that it's visually confusing... as foreground panels display sample scenes with similar stars in them. .... Just a thought. ...One possible solution could be to render background stars a different color/shade when displayed against the samples of foreground panels. Just thinking. Good work, though. Back to the controversy: original vs. new effects.
For the lovers of the original, I see their point. Especially if the alterations are more than just for effects. For the revision fans. I acknowledge the improvement. Perhaps the powers that be can make sure the original versions can remain intact and available while the improved version takes the stage. Both as opposed to either/or.

This is the only episode(all 3 vers) where you do not see phaser #1 or 2(spock has a LASER pistol like in the Cage) & yet there is a PHASER rifle, which BTW should have also been beamed down to the planet in the Horta episode! - Why wasn't it?!

"Why would a crewman(Gary) be trying to "air grab" a crew woman - very unprofessional! - i see why THAT was cut." ....You're looking at it through the eyes of today. These would have been considered amusing acts showing the frisky sex drive of a red-blooded male. Though, notice he does not let the women see him do it. It's a man-to-man wink at the default male sci-fi audience - "We'd all like to grab this hot stuff, guys, wouldn't we, heh heh." In short, it was frisky but not the least bit wrong. Feminism in popular culture was years in the future. If the network cut the air-grabbing actions, it was solely because they were too suggestive. Nothing to do with any concept of sexual harassment or women's professional dignity.
