- A complete playthrough of Kemco's 1992 Super Nintendo racing game, Top Gear.
Played through on the Championship difficulty level with the red car. At one point I reset the game and input the password that I'd just received so that I could start the Scandinavia circuit with the manual transmission red car instead of the automatic. At this difficulty level, the extra speed is definitely needed.

Another example of how a soundtrack can define a game and become the thing that people remember.
The black screen with the first few bars of music playing over it before each race is a magical presentation trick.
I just remembered this game from my childhood (approximately 25 years since I would've last played it), thought this was the name and within 2 seconds of the soundtrack starting in this vid I knew I found it

A top-tier 16-bit SNES racer, and the first of Gremlin's spiritual followups to the classic Lotus games.
This game blew me away as a kid - and still does. This SNES exclusive's incredibly smooth scaling, mind-blowing soundtrack that remixes several iconic Lotus tracks, and super-responsive controls put this cart on par with the SNES' best. It's seriously awesome stuff.

F-Zero reminds me of the early “days of wonder” of the SNES and has a ton of nostalgia for me, but I would rather play Top Gear - the music is incredible and it reminds me of one of my earliest favourite games as a little kid - Out Run on Sega Master System. Oh the memories! Me and my uncle used to play this fantastic piece of game. Whenever me or my uncle ran out of fuel, we used to push each other across the finish line or to the pit stops.. Such amazing soundtrack and so much fun we had.. Love it.
This was such a well made game. Especially the soundtrack. It's literally the only game that had 7 year old me considering engine parts and being efficient lol. At that age, I'd usually quit a game if it had any level of customization. I just wanted it to race. This game hooked me though lol.

I remember playing this game so much back in ‘95-96 when I was 12-13 years old. My friends would come spend the night with me and we would play Top Gear all night on SNES! Best times ever!✊🏽

I think the sequel improved in many areas,such as realistic damage, dynamic weather and upgrades.
But the first game have the edge of having different cars.

development and get official developer

Kemco had seen and liked the hugely
popular Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge by
Gremlin, which led to a collaboration to
create a new racing game between us.
The names 'Top Gear' and 'Top Racer'
came about because of a craze in the
office at the time of calling anything
good 'top' I'm not sure if this craze
extended beyond the office, but I have
recollections of another Gremlin
programmer saying it a lot and
possibly being the source!
We started with a bit of a home-brew
dev kit and later switched to a more
official kit. We had very little
documentation and what we did have
was initially unofficial and poorly
translated from Japanese. I managed
to get the system up and running and
figured out how most of it worked,
including getting a first-pass rolling
road working. No code from any
other racing games was used or even
referenced, though I did have a few
chats with Lotus coder Shaun Southern
who sometimes shared my office
when he was visiting Gremlin."

The best sound
A perfect example that simplicity and an almost perfect execution are a match made in heaven. If we exclude F-zero and Mario Kart this is easily the best racing game in the entire system.
I remember playing this through the game genie. Endless nitro was fun lapping cars like crazy.
This is my all time favorite racing game. I was practically unbeatable as a kid. Even in Top Gear 3000. It has been ages since i played. gotta play these again soon!!

When I played it on the SNES I never passed from South America. Years later on an Xbox emulator I passed it. The Scandinavian circuit was my favorite.

I finally figured out the name of the game I use to rent at blockbuster as a kid!

Never understood the love for the red car. I'd almost always use the white car because of the acceleration, cornering, and fuel economy. Worth saving time in the pits!
If you dont crash with the red car and drive perfectly with it it will finish the race faster than the white due to max acceleration way higher.
Its like Bowser DK in super mario kart, despite having a weaker acceleration, if you dont crash you ll do the best time trial
The red car is meant to be a challenge, planning for the pits is key
I've only beat this game once or twice its hard but I remember doing it around 10 years old I'm 31 now I can't play it for that long I gotta try again. My friends around the neighbor would would play this game our first racing game we'd play for years
better than a DC or MARVEL movie in the middle of the covid 19

Programmed by Gremlin Graphics who did the Lotus Trilogy on the Amiga around the same time with similar sounding music 🏴🇨🇳
I have the second game, but not this, which is a shame. I like the fact that even in 1 player mode, the games still plays like 2P, because it sets a computer to challenge you!

I can never get past Cologne (Germany) with the red car, I always run out of fuel (but that seems to be poor programming, since there's no pit stop to refuel in this stage). Any ideas why?
+Rafael Pellizzari The red one was the gas hog beginner car. To go really far with it, you had to play near perfectly later on in the game, being really careful with your turbos. The manual transmission also really helps get more out of it, but the other cars are easier to win with later in the game.

Can confirm you can't turn like this at those speeds. Hell 30 is too fast for some curves.

How is your car not skidding off the road on turns?
I know this is late, but it's because the red car has the best tire grip. It also has the best speed and acceleration, but it's not recommended late game because of its terribly high gas consumption compared to the other cars.
Edit: I was mega wrong. This is actually the worst car because it has the worst tire grip and acceleration (white car has the best of both).
He's turning the corners well because after a certain point, he changes the gear settings from automatic to manual to manually adjust his speed when necessary.

This game was a rip-off from Lotus esprit turbo challenge on Amiga 500. I had both games, the Lotus was faaar better!
Both series were made by the same team, so I'm not sure I'd call Top Gear a ripoff. It's more like a console-specific spinoff.
@@NintendoComplete Yes, but Lotus was released by Gremlin Interactive but developer was Magnetic Fields. Top Gear was released by Kemco, and developed by Gremlin Interactive. Magnetic Fields was not involved for SNES version. Different programmers for Lotus and Top Gear. Don´t misunderstand me here, I had de SNES and loved it but was very dissapointed with Top Gear when comparing to the awesome Lotus for amiga. Top Gear has too fast framepacing, inferior car feeling on the road, steering is like a bad joke.
Tobbe I’m currently playing through this at the minute. I had and adored all 3 lotus games on the Amiga back in the day (still got them). This is a solid game tbh and although I’d always pick lotus 2 as my favourite, this is still a great game and very well programmed for the snes imo.
