- A playthrough of Tradewest's 1993 Super NES 3D off-road racing game, Super Off Road: The Baja.
Played through on the Intermediate difficulty level. This really is a pretty impressive looking game when you consider that it relied on the stock SNES hardware to generate its graphics.
The game is alright, but it's pretty short and it can get irritating that half the time the 3D effects make it virtually impossible to tell which way the road will turn when you get over a hill. On the plus side, there's little else like a digitzed voice screaming "Arriba!" at you every time you go over a hill while using the nitro boost. Or smashing a cow, being penalized for $10k, and hearing it scream like a person as its chunks run across your windscreen.
It's a poor showing for a game that was meant to be the sequel to Super Off-Road, though that doesn't necessarily make it a bad game. It's just surprisingly mediocre.
And to those that find the controls impossibly twitchy - good luck if you're trying to play using the D-pad. The sooner you get used to steering with the L and R buttons, the sooner you will stop crashing and coming in last place :D

also arriba literally means up so it makes sense anytime the vehicle jumps into the air the madman yells arriba

I admit as a kid I would purposely run over the motorcycle guys because the sound was funny as hell. All of the sound effects are funny.
This is impressive. I had no idea the SNES was capable of Mode 7 with anything other than flat surfaces. Did this game have an additional processor built into the cartridge to accomplish this? I would have expected to see something like this on a 3DO or an early PS1 game, but certainly not the SNES. Way cool.
I'm pretty sure this is not mode 7 but just raster/scaling effects, similar to the scaling used in the Top Gear games...I could be wrong though. I do agree that this looks like something from a newer console, the scaling looks really awesome and without co processors/enhancement chips (even if it looks a little pixelated and the framerate is slightly choppy. at least the controls are fine)
Actually it is mode 7, which is why it is so choppy. a normal rasterized playfield wouldn't be so demanding (by far)
The track is mode 7, must have used scalling effect on objects similar to Road Rash of Mega Drive, via software.
It's not mode 7, it's all done via software.

Honestly, great job. This game can be super brutal. Maybe with a ton of time I could have done it, but renting it 3 or 4 times I didn't get past leg 5.

There’s just something satisfying about this game. Reminds me of the original Super Off Road too for NES because we used to play that one all the time.
I find it pretty hilarious whenever you pick up money or nitros in the game. You would think that appropriate sound effects would occur when you get them, but nope, all you hear is "yeah", which makes it very funny.

One of a kind game I have owned for more than 30 years. Has aged well in 2024. I find Ivan ridiculous in this game though. The most I have ever beaten him by is 5 seconds though and that was straight nitros through the dry lake bed board. Game is a classic.

If there was a Game Genie code having your truck take no damage is a great miracle because this is a hard and frustrating game to play.
I remember the "Yeah..." with the money bags 💰. I think I may have played this on the arcade as well, I remember both versions, the 2D overhead version and this.

The good ol' traditional Baja 1000 races of Baja California came to the 16 bits of the SNES.
One of the very few SNES-era games I actually managed to beat.
I thought for sure you was gonna lose on leg 5 with all that damage .. always used to lose during that part back in the day. YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE PAST THE HILLS MAN!

I played the later version of this game while growing up, on some Nintendo
Intro runs too fast compared to real hardware. Still own the cartridge. Loved when you jump after using nitros then taking damage afterwards, because it feels just like the General Lee. The AI always rubberband, though! Reaching La Paz is difficult. I remember actually trying that level WITHOUT lights. Boy what a mistake that was, because the road is near-black!
When you pause, make sure it actually is, because everytime it looks like the game legit froze, as the sound is literally put on hold.

was this recorded on the original hardware? i swear the game never looked this good.
It's very possibly from Europe, they had SCART with true RGB output. In the US and even Japan we had either RF which was horrible, or composite which jammed 3 color signals into one and via weird trickery output it onto the screen, but a lot of color definition is lost doing that.

I had this game and it was enjoyable, I still preferred the original off road on the Genesis.

This was one of the first games I grew up on, this, mario world, gradius 3, jungle book and a few others. I never realized what cheating scum the Ai was until now lol, I guess I was too busy purposely running over all the ATVs and pedestrians to notice what place I was in.
