I would like to buy an updated version of the 1821+ (1824+?).

It is probably due for a refresh soon.

Thanks a lot for the incredible clear video, been looking into getting a Synology NAS myself (1522+) where i would potentially run a Minecraft server on for friends additionally through a docker container. So i am already looking around for videos on potentially upgrading the ram and what not.
But this really showcased how easy it is to upgrade the ram and SSD cache if needed.

Thanks so much for this video. I use my NAS mainly for photos and videos which I edit for our TH-cam channel. Recently it has started to run very slow when loading up folders of videos so I was thinking of SSD cache and upgrade memory. This video has helped make the decision. Like you, hopefully, I will have a lot faster access speeds once installed.

Thanks! I appreciate the upgrade. File access, thumbnail generation, and all of that kind of access from my computers is snappier. It was worth it.

The RAM kit you show in your video is not the same as the kit you link to in the video description. You are installing 3200Mhz RAM, yet your Amazon link points to the 2666MHz version. Why?

I'll have to check the link. I would recommend the faster RAM. I must have misclicked the link.

@@Techthusiasm The link does say, however, that the product is a replacement for the Synology D4ECSO-2666-16G RAM (x2). The 4GB RAM that comes with the 1821+ is indeed rated at 2666Mhz, so I guess technically 2666Mhz RAM is "more compatible" as it is an exact spec match to the Synology official RAM. I just installed the A-Tech 2666Mhz 32GB kit that your Amazon link points to, and it works OK without any warning messages, etc. The system sees the full 32GB.

On every PC I’ve owned I’ve always upgraded the RAM to the max and I run only 7200 hard drives. I’m also running my PC as a NAS. I presently have a simple WD Live NAS but it’s mainly for pictures, documents, home movies and music. I’ve owned it for roughly 12/15 years. It’s only 1 drive and not powerful enough for 4K or some 1080p movies. I will eventually upgrade to,at least,a 4 bay NAS but 1st I’ll need a new PC for Windows 11 since in 2025 Windows 10 will not be supported anymore. I don’t drink, smoke nor do drugs but you might as well say Electronics is my Crack of Choice!😂👴🏽

Might be a dumb question but Is the cache good for gaming?

This is a NAS, so no gaming on it. It's used for storage and serving files.

I upgraded memory in my QNAP, but the system never really does anything to tax memory. The CPU is what needed upgrading lol. Instead of upgrading to an 8-bay drive NAS, I got a Synology to see if I liked its ecosystem better.
When all was said and done, I bought a Zidoo and use it and Infuse (AppleTV) to watch my media. These are my preferences over Plex and Emby.
I think I will eventually move to a Synology 182x with 16/18 TB discs. The NAS boxes are rather impressive products.

I really love having a NAS in my setup. It does so many useful things.

Amazing explanation. I have a smaller sinology and am about to purchase a 5 drive add-on to it. I think I should however get the memory and the cache ssd as well as I do photography and am currently running a 50tb photo library that I can't work off of since it is too slow.....thank you again. I liked, subscribed and will definitely use your links to purchase

Awesome video and I have also upgraded ram on the synology NAS.
There is a SSD Cache advisor that you can run on the storage tab and estimates size required, however was quite large for me last time I looked.
Regardless it should prioritise most frequently accessed and still provide benefits. Ie plex thumbnails.
