    This is the video I was waiting for. Would you also consider making a video on the process of transferring data from one brand to another? Also, excellent movie choices! C'mon! Network? The Room? That's cinema gold. 🙂

      My goal is to find an alternative, configure it as close to the setup I already have on my Synology, transfer all data to the new setup with a simple copy and paste, turn off the synology nas and sell it off or just trash it. Good riddance to antiquated hardware and never look back.

    I *think* I'm still happy that I learnt the TrueNAS solution, built a SuperMicro based system that does what I need, though Synology has a lot of features that I like the look of, like the photo and security camera one. The one thing that appealed to me was that I could build or buy almost any machine to run TrueNAS if the 24/7 server went bang, I wouldn't be dependant on buying another Synology. Mind you, they seem very reliable from what I've heard.
    Electric Eel version of TrueNAS Scale is amazingly good compared to almost any other release, though I've not put it into production as yet, but have tinkered.

    I'm on my 3rd Synology in 15 years...
    I know it is far behind on hardware, but I need an easy non-techy solution that is just safe, always works and is easy to manage and upgrade.
    If I move to something else; I have to move 24TB so buy or loan new Disk space?
    If I move to something else, I have to learn/find how to setup dockers, vpn, firewall, sub-domains with certificates, media-server, pc-backup, cloud-sync, mobile apps, etc. etc.
    For me not worth to switch; months of headaches
    I'm just a user, not a tech nerd brewing my own solutions...

      Moving over to a different system is a huge undertaking without having the expertise of migrating to a completely new system. Synology does make it simple as long as you buy their products but recent decisions to depreciate a simple feature like hardware codec transcoding and apps like Videostation is an eye opener that they are not concern with their customer base depending on any given feature Synology use to offer and at any given time they can decide to EOL a function without offering an alternative option like a paid license. They do this knowing fully that their customers will have no other choice, what's to stop them to just sunset other functions a specific group depends on? While my DSM Nas runs fine as it currently is, as long as I'm not forced to update DSM, I'm making sure to research alternatives that offers much better hardware and isn't stranglehold with convenience or simplicity. So, while my current Synology Nas is safe, the moment I figure out which way to go, I won't be looking back the moment EOL Synology entirely.

      Many other brands come close to synology ito ease of use. But as you mention migration can be difficult(this is true for almost anything). Though cost wise there are easier solutions than buying extra disks (like using a cloud backup service for a short period to migrate).

    The video didn't really answer the question in it's title, it just gave the same options any watcher of this channel would know are available. The insinuation, whether intentional or not, was that Synology are the best which kind of defeats the point.
    For me the exciting one would be Ubiquiti, I already run the network hardware and love it.
    I've had Terramaster, they aren't there yet (running TOS 5). QNAP have suffered too many security issues, UGreen are too new and lack availability. So I considered Asustor and self-build as the only viable options. My choice for now is the 6 bay Lockerstore gen 2 but I'm still looking at setting up a test self-build to see if I like it.
    Synology are done for prosumers in my opinion, the weak hardware has overtaken their software advantage... and they appear keen to chip away at that software advantage in recent releases.
    I echo roocrew86: I dont understand how Synology has fucked this up

    I don’t have any UniFi equipment yet, but have been following the brand and its development for some time. I am currently okay with my 6-bay Synology NAS running hybrid RAID with 4 TB drives, one of which is a hot spare. At this point, however, I only use the NAS for storage, no media server and no surveillance, although I plan to add the later at some point. A UniFi NAS solution might be the thing that finally pushed me into their total ecosystem, as I don’t really make use of most of what DSM has to offer.

    Synology needs to up their game before folks bail out on the brand due to the wimpy hardware. DSM won't keep them above water forever if the hardware doesn't keep up. As far as Synology focusing on enterprise.. I've worked the enterprise storage world for over 25 years.. (think EMC, Dell, Data Domain, Isilon, etc..) Synology is nowhere near that class and will not survive.

      @pfitz4881 It will keep them afloat as they still sell stuff, as they screwed you to buy ridiculously overpriced HD and m2s. But they damaged the brand, it has been 4 years of this crap, and many have left and will not come back. The window is clos3d at this point and they clearly do not care anyways about smb and prosumer. The competition is fierce right now in smb, there won't be a lot of room if they want to compete again and it will be based on price and they dont like doing that. All the while getting no where against Dell and emc. They did it to themselves. They lost there mind...

    I just want one single thing from a Synology competitor: A rock solid alternative to SHR.
    The prosumer cannot afford buying a set of uniform disks and having an ability to mix and match is what keeps me with Synology.
    Plugging any storage in and having DSM add it to the pool and intelligently adjust its configuration is THE killer feature for me.
    I host every service elsewhere, on a dedicated piece of hardware. I just want the easiest way to mix disks into maximum storage.

      Synology are constantly reducing the number of certified disks, and the higher up you go in the line-up, the more devices only support Toshiba disks rebadged as Synology for a much higher price.

    As a Unifi + QNAP user, I have come to realize that I would strongly prefer a dedicated NAS-only device. I would rather run VM and containerized services such as PiHole and JellyFin and OPNsense on a dedicated mini-PC or NUC. The opensource products are so polished these days that I have no interest in the half-assed commercial versions provided by the consumer NAS manufacturers. With the affordability of 10GbE and Thunderbolt networking, there is little advantage to combining storage and services into a single vulnerable machine. Keeping each service and storage as separate and discrete as possible adds a lot of resilience to the overall network.
    For those that just want a single box, and are concerned about Synology's current commitment to the lay user market, I'd have to say that I am impressed with the improvements made by QNAP over the past few years.

    Been in IT for a long time, and want my home services to be as simple and as usable as possible. Beyond synology being one of the few choices 7+ years ago, I wanted something I didn’t have to spend time dealing with it. For the price, there are now options both out of the box and custom system builds.

    • @Nasguy-b7q
      @Nasguy-b7q 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Seems so simple to do and yet here we are. 2 years ago they could have saved it buy just easing restrictions and not rebadging old hardware. The 423 was my last straw with them. After years of abuse and nickel and diming. They could have released something like the 453e which would have made sense and charge 100 more for it. The 923 really doesn't perform, it doesn't serve a real purpose as they now compete against a different market with the cpu. On paper more business but in reality when you add a pool and syno hard drives and syno memory and 10gbe, you now can buy a zfs solution that is much better. They just don't make sense anymore. Priced themselves out of market and made too many headaches along the way.

    Thank you very much for your informative video.
    You describe exactly what I went through with my IT company.
    We liked to use the Synology platform because it provided good support for our SOHO environment.
    But Synology doesn't offer an affordable path for our growing needs.
    Our minimum requirement is an 8 core 16 thread processor. 32G memory as a minimum.
    Only then can we get started with virtualization. That doesn't have to cost capital either.
    In the end, I found the solution in DIY Proxmox systems. AMD Ryzen 5 5600G is already a breath of fresh air compared to what Synology can offer you.
    Costs are not too bad at all. The migration for a professional is also not too dramatic.
    A Kerio Connect or Mailenable runs smoothly on this as an Exchange alternative. You can even run two MS SQL servers on it. Albeit under light load.
    My conclusion is that Synology no longer serves the prosumer/soho market.
    For the lightweight users, there are plenty of alternatives.
    For the more demanding users, Proxmox offers, at least that's how I feel, so much better experience that I wonder why didn't I switch sooner?
    But everyone has their own choice that we must understand and respect.

    Hi NASCompares, I am considering adding a Home Media Server/NAS of which I know nothing about. I have Audials One Ultra 2025 (I haven't used yet) and was looking at some youtube video's on Jellyfin & Plex (and yeah haven't used them and know nothing about).
    I am just trying to put everything together like Audials copies the stream (movies, tv shows, etc) and Jellyfin or Plex manages the media on a NAS (I am just assuming this and not sure why Audials can't do the managing).
    So as a starting point on having the resources to get started with a $700 dollar budget, which NAS in your opinion is the best Home Media NAS to get?? I heard alot of mentions on Synology, Synology, Synology but most times the bigger names don't necessary give you the most for your dollar.
    I am not a overly technical person and additionally I don't wring out all the features to the max, I just want to store the media, file it and watch it, that's pretty much it, but I also don't want to short myself as a get more familiar with the devices, software and features.
    I thank you in advance for your time in answering me,

    I still use my first Synology NAS from 10 years ago. It's been good for a starter NAS. Inexpensive and just works. But the old hardware can't handle more than the most basic NAS functions. Soon as I do anything, the CPU spikes to max usage and won't come down.

    I Purchased Synology because it reminded me of my apple products with ease of use , but with my Plex 4K HD library growing the CPU has being found wanting(especially when watching at work ) .I have even paid down on zettlab crowd fund NAS item . I have essentially tried to avoid building my own ,but TH-cam as inspired me to go for it . Got my Trunas start up USB sorted and slowly going to build one . Erying (embedded CPU)motherboard ordered (after watching you video )and gonna go for it . Its the only way I'm going to be truly satisfied.

    I wish one of these brands would go to the market and actually ask them what we want in a device.
    Then we would finally see 10GbE and devices with ECC RAM.

    • @Nasguy-b7q
      @Nasguy-b7q 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For me QNAP has done what you asked, even provided the spec you want. Given Hero has ZFS, ecc isn't important and 2.5 in multichannel for most smb applications is good in that tier. Qnap has been responding to my complaints where Synology has ignored them. Ymmv with any brand but for my needs qnap is a good fit.

    • @ericneo2
      @ericneo2 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Nasguy-b7q 2.5 is not 10GbE no amount of lying and BS marketeering will change that. 1GbE and 2.5GbE tells me immediately they've done 0 market research and don't listen to their customers.

    • @Nasguy-b7q
      @Nasguy-b7q 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ericneo2ok, we can different then on that one. 10gbe is standard on a good share of their devices that makes sense. I will hand it to you with the h874 getting 2.5 until you get fastest processor is a money grab for sure, but again it is an option. I would much rather the vendor force me to buy any generic 10gbe and perhaps m2s combo for more pool,tier, ai, or cache then what synology has done. Looking at the sheer number of options in the lineup and that many small smb never will use beyond 5.x be anyways. The files are a just 2 small for 3 users. So 2.5 be is a cheap and good solution for that market. Again much better than 1gbe from my friends at synology. Once you break into larger clients or needs 10gbe is important. My complaints I had with qnap have mostly been addressed as they listened to us, again much better than Synology as they didn't.

    If UNIFI goes for the NAS space I hope they just implement a SAMBA server with user/quotas management on a 1U or 2U platform. A UNIFI NAS would be beautiful... as any other UNIFI equipment.
    All I want and need from a NAS is storage space.
    Server functionality I get from my own systems with Linux (virtual machines, Nextcloud, etc.). These systems can also be used as a NAS if needed. Hence, SYNOLOGY devices are useless to me.

    In the meantime, whilst all the others tempt me as little projects pieces, as for trusting any of them with my data, work etc, well they might be a bit less exciting, and certainly less empowered, but I'll be sticking with Synology! a simple way I explain Synology and Qnap is that Synology is Nas market Apple, just works with good features and software, but are locked and expensive. Qnap you get a lot of hardware for the money compared, you can tweak it like an android phone and it is much more compatible with more brands of hardware.

    • @Nasguy-b7q
      @Nasguy-b7q 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @HallesHit great point but apple would typically use one gen behind Intel, our friends at synology use much older and crappier hardware to maximize profit. I mean the rebadged 920 aka 423, Apple even in it worst time would not stoop so low.

    The TLDR ... even thougth I watched every second:
    - No one else has the turnkey package Synology has,
    - Although it would be fun, I dont want the headache and potential maintenance of a DUI,
    - I have a DS-918 in our home server, no business, no prosumer or enterprise needs, its just about safe storage of our families digital life,
    - sure its not bleeding edge, not fastest around, but its also not got the recent problems of drive and other hardware compatibility etc
    ... so Im not doing a darn thing until this one actually implodes and fails to start ... I'll worry about it ... and likely watch me some more Robbie ... when that time comes.

      @mitchellsmith4601 To be fair for most things qts has the same or better than dsm, 3rd party sure. But for a business that needs dockers, meetings, collaboration, etc. From the user perspective qts is similar. It will likely be faster on qts given that hardware. So as a deployed solution qts and dsm is a give and take. Going to mid, hero with zfs is a much better choice. qts has evolved a lot in 4 years, they added bit defender to the core os for security and buttoned up the issues.

      @mitchellsmith4601 It is a new product in some regards. They put a lot of effort into the os and security over the last 4 years, unlike my friends at synology that just tried to squeeze every nickel out of my pocket for 1999 and 2019 tech and silly overpriced drives and m2s. Qts is a great option for smb now, really the best performing value for business and prosumer. Deploy and forget and for the user it is a good experience.

    • @Nasguy-b7q
      @Nasguy-b7q 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mitchellsmith4601 i frankly would have thought this would have been covered many months ago.. odd. 5.2 has been out for weeks, and Bitdefender was introduced into the os months ago. Works great, had it flag me a few times for mass copies and deletions. The firewall does report a lot of flash positives in the log, it is sensitive to network broadcasts from some print drivers. Nothing is perfect but qts has had a massive effort to fix it and it works well. Also funny that they weren't acknowledged for any of it. Oh well...
