Excellent video, just the right amount of video speed and commentary.

Thank you for this video. You did a great job making this look achievable.

Looks great. Always best to use the minimally expanding foam for window and doors so the door frame doesn't bend. I also put a little adhesive on the shims so they don't shift (not necessary but helps). Look forward to seeing the rest of the remodel.

I appreciate it! And you are totally right about the min expanding foam. I had some of the regular stuff on hand, so I just went with it - being careful not to apply too much. Good tip!

Great video! I need to replace my basement door and I'm dreading it. I hate installing exterior doors as it is (installed 3 at my last house - every one was difficult) and this basement door looks like it's going to cause me problems. It needs to get replaced soon though since bugs and snakes are coming in through the gap at the bottom of the door and I'm sure it's not very energy efficient.

Great work! Very helpful! Have you ever considered to change the swing of the door?

If you can manage it, I've found it works much easier to use a rotary hammer rather than a hammer drill, especially if you're going into old poured concrete rather than cinderblock.

Yeah not bad mate, would've used plastic 'same thickness' shims myself instead of timber shims (due to them being uniform in thickness) and once set, I'd be ripping out those timber screws on the jamb and replacing them with concrete screws to get a real solid fixing into the masonry (of if you don't have them, throw some tie wire into the hole and then adding stainless screws to ensure a nice bite into the masonry block) but that's my just 'two cents worth' or information, nice job mate. Cheers from an Australian Chippy (Carpenter)

I agree, the wood shims are really made to be use in pairs. You slide one in from each side so that final thickness is uniform.

I have the same exact walk out in my split level home. I needed to replace the door cause it was old and the jambs and threshold on one side had rotted from taking on water. This video would've been extremely helpful back then. I ended up paying a contractor something like 600$ to do the work. I personally hate those walkouts from a lower level room to the outside. They're a trap for dirt, water, and debris. Nice work and explanation. What was the total cost of the project?

Totally agree that those walkouts are a housekeeping nightmare. Always full of dirt, water, etc. In terms of cost, I think the door was around $300 and then I would figure around $50-$75 for the Tapcon screws, flashing tape, caulk, and door handle. So if your $600 price included the door, I would say you got a pretty great deal! Thanks for watching!

Very nice job. I just replaced my basement entry door also and it went very well. If any one can tell me why they have those small metal tabs on the inside of the door that protrudes out of the hinges? My door is the same way and i really don't care for the look, but its a basement door i guess.

How long did it take for you to do this? How much would it cost to have someone do this for me?

Helpful video, but I never would use that type of door knob and deadbolt on an exterior door that has a window. A thief could easily break the window, reach inside and unlock the door. Replace it with a keyed deadbolt.
