My wife & I are a "2 man" (person) construction team, renovating homes together. Our next job is this exact thing. Thank you for being straight forward and Frank. Very informative. A winner.
My husband is a welder and writes on steel alot, he uses soap stone. Works great and is super cheap! Just don't forget to take it out of your pocket before washing. Bonnie will have your head! I know from experience! lol I'm loving watching the house transformation! You guys are kicking butt!
I can listen to you talk home reno ALL day...you are a GREAT teacher sharing important tips and tricks along the way. Your focus on safety and quality is fantastic. The folks that end up in this house will benefit tremendously....if I lived in the area I’d buy this place in a heartbeat 💓
Todays Task is an absolutely delightful channel. I love hearing about so many details as you do each of your building tasks. It would be so great if you could do more than one vlog per week. I watch ALL of them. I also never miss watching the Bonnie Hoellein vlogsl. You and Bonnie are charming people with sweet, joyful children.
Love how many of us ladies are Luvvin ya Joel😂 I won’t tell Bonnie if you don’t!! You’re brill, easy to understand, you don’t rush info so even I can keep up. So excited to see the house done but enjoying your love and passion in the meantime.👍🏼
Great video Joel well done keep up the good work. Love how the house is coming on ❤️👍. Loved how the kids were in the tractor at the end. It was really cute
Hey jole I'm the person that asked you about ahat nails we should use for concrete. And the one's you recommended the work so good and they are strong thank you. Keep the good work up
What a difference! I feel that this house would be better for you guys. Seems that there will be more rooms and Bonnie would have a walk in closet and bathroom!
I was wondering if a homeowner could change out those little windows in the basement for something bigger?! When I saw your mother-in-law doing her cleaning windows video and talking about how much light they bring in, I was sold!! Love your video!! We have 3 little ones and I know we could change at least 2 windows.
It is such an improvement in light, but it also creates a secondary exit in the case of a fire. I have heard that some insurances will cover the cost of the egress windows. Might be worth checking out.
If your cutter uses a mount wall saw make sure to leave them a good foot to foot and a half on the left side specifically (if cutting from outside which is best option weather permitting) so they don’t have to do upside down cuts I hated making them makes a big mess when I used to cut. also if basement finished you use a tub and plastic will contain all the water that gets inside. And GRAVEL GRAVEL GRAVEL. jth btw 😅
Hi Joel, thanks for the information. Question, could the same technique be used to cut the wall of a 8 inch thick wrap around porch? The slab of the porch is 6 inches thick. The wall is 11ft tall and i would only be cutting a 5 ft x 4 ft egress? The top of the egress would be 4-5 ft below the top of the wall. Do you think the wall would still be structurally sound with the use of a lintel? Thx Scott
You're going have to put lintels in both side of the walls for sure. I'm a professional concrete cutter and have cut way bigger opens through block walls. But find out the type of lintel and size requirements and you'll be fine.
Question. It’s it “better” to have the foundation resting on top of the window like this house? What are that advantages and disadvantages? Or is it better to have the windows at the top of the foundation with just the sill plate above?
If the support joist are perpendicular to the window that I’m enlarging generally a steel structural window do I need both a header and a temporary support wall ?
Great video, I am planning on doing something similar except cutting a door instead of a window, where do you get those lintel beams from and where did you look to get this concrete cutting services, did a quick search but could not find someone to handle cutting foundation walls like that. Thanks again
I'm about to be expanding a doorway in my home in a block wall. Just out of curiosity, do you only need one lintel? I was under the impression you needed one on both sides. Or is that because it's solid concrete?
Thank you for the great video. Very helpful. I am wondering if just one lintel on the inside will be enough for support? I am going to do the same job in my basement and a little worried if just one lintel is okay.
Yes one lintel is enough, but you need to have the lintels engineered for the load they will carry. Good luck with your project. It will change your basement forever.
Joel, are there going to be more bedrooms downstairs? Somewhere along the line I missed that part I guess. Just realized that the only bedroom upstairs is the master while looking at the drawings Bonnie had. By the way, you are a very "Handy Man" so would you build a tiny house for me? I am old, so I need one with a bedroom on main floor. Just kidding, but I do love them and wish they had become a thing before I got so old. Love how you love your family and how you want the best for them.
Yes there will be two bedrooms down stairs and three bedrooms upstairs. the drawings only show the kitchen and master area because thats all that needed drafting. There are two more rooms upstairs that will stay the same. I would love to build a tiny house...
Hi Joel I am very interested in watching you with your house you are doing a great job stay safe remodeling the house Joel I will be thinking about you. I watch Bonnies videos two i am subscribed to both of your channels. Have a great day Joel. Sethbeske
This house is looking amazing! I can’t believe you guys aren’t going to move into it, seems so open and spacious the further along it gets. And that master bathroom & closet on the plans would be amazing! Loving watching this whole process!
I saw Bonnie's video where she got upset about the vent in the floor. I have lived in several houses where vents were located in the middle of the floor between rooms.
He used a regular concrete saw the first day. It wasn't shown in the video because I lost the footage some how. The second day he connects the corner cuts with a Ring saw which is what is shown in the video.
Hi Joel! I have a helpful suggestion about the master bath. Don't put the door to the closet in the bathroom, put the door to the closet in the bedroom, that way if someone is using the bathroom, you can still have access to the closet. When a closet is in the bathroom it's a big pain in the a$$. Let me know what you think, It really is a big deal.
@@TodaysTask yeah they were big pieces but I wanted to make sure it was ok to do. I was wondering with water drainage under the big rocks if it would cause issues later
Lentil needs to be rated to hold up the whole house, not just the concrete. Also some of those walls are load bearing and some aren't yet you used the same lentil for both.
Good catch. The lentils I put in are big enough to support the loadbearing walls, and since it was the same piece of steel, I put them in the other ones as well.
I'm a professional concrete cutter and do these all the time. You're wanna look up building code for your area. Basically there is gonna be a maximum height for the bottom of the window so that small children or a elderly person can get out easily as well as a way to easily get out of the window well it's self. I believe there may also be different requirements on how the window opens and how much the window has to open to easily get out. Also remember when you dig out the dirt for the egress window well on the outside make sure you have very good water drainage in place. This not only keeps water out of the window well but also keep water away from the foundation.
@@TodaysTask they really have data on that? If so I doubt they ask a follow-up question; could you have escaped without using the egress window? I'm not an anti- I just think it opens up a great way for a thief to get in.

You remind me so much of Tom Silva from this old house. One of my favorite tv shows. The house is coming along nice.

I don’t know for sure when it comes to brick.
I would contact and engineer for sure. That would be money well spent in my opinion.

I wish I could work with you, I'd learn so much. I was wondering do you have to worry about theft of anything with those windows open like that?
Come work anytime..... Yes I worry about theft for sure so I boarded up the windows for now.

the lentils are engineered channel iron, and you can search concrete cutting.
Did bluestake mark out with paint where the gas and water lines were?
I know that they do that here in Ontario Canada
I'm about to be expanding a doorway in my home in a block wall. Just out of curiosity, do you only need one lintel? I was under the impression you needed one on both sides. Or is that because it's solid concrete?
It depends on what the engineer wants.
He will take the roof and floor loads into consideration.
Super informative! Great video 👍🏻
Just found your channel! Love your content! I'm curious how much did it cost to have your foundation cut?
It cost $1,900 for all windows and two small HVAC access holes.

question:
what do i do about the water for a finished carpeted basement

I don't see the video of you installing the windows like you mentioned at the end. I have a similar project I am about to start working on.
A lentil is like a little dried bean.
A lintel is a horizontal beam
Is there a video of the window installation in the egress?
I do not have one, I wish we could have captured it.
No rebar in those foundations? Just wondering.
Yes, there were three pieces that we could see when we cut the foundation.
@@TodaysTask thanks
I saw Bonnie's video where she got upset about the vent in the floor. I have lived in several houses where vents were located in the middle of the floor between rooms.
Very interesting!
Can you use this same lintel technique on cinderblock construction? Does anyone know?
Yes, it will work the same.
Can this be done on any house with a concrete foundation?
Yes, you will want to have an engineer make specifications, but I have done this to two homes now.
Good video, nice job. However at the end with the kids in the bucket I was like, dude.. you know that excavator had a hydraulic thumb right?
Hey Joel, you mentioned the special circle saw? Please let me know which one you used. Thank you
He used a regular concrete saw the first day. It wasn't shown in the video because I lost the footage some how. The second day he connects the corner cuts with a Ring saw which is what is shown in the video.
Todays Task you are awesome thank you!!
What concrete cutter did you use?
Lots of deer in the area. I can tell by the browse lines on the bushes.
How much is the cost for 1 egress window?

Im new to the business what's more Ideal Gas or electric? great content btw.
Curious....what do you do with concrete that is cut out? Haul it off or leave it in hole? I am in process of having an egress done
I have done both, leave it in the window well if the they are deep enough, or break it up and take it away. There is now easy way about this project.
@@TodaysTask yeah they were big pieces but I wanted to make sure it was ok to do. I was wondering with water drainage under the big rocks if it would cause issues later
Do you have someone on site to help spot you and watch out for the power lines and such?
Yes, I have had my Dad on site almost everyday we have worked.
@@TodaysTask Thank goodness...If I was Bonnie it would make me a nervous wreck if you were out there alone! ;-)
I like how you pronounce "lintel" like "lentil" the food hahah
where do you buy the whole egress system
Lentil needs to be rated to hold up the whole house, not just the concrete. Also some of those walls are load bearing and some aren't yet you used the same lentil for both.

Hey where do I get lintels?
Time to let in the Sunshine Joel! ^_^
Does the house have steel siding?
It has aluminum siding, but it is going to be replaced.
How much does that cost????
Pre Covid it was $1,900 to cut all the windows. But I know it can be much much more depending on location and company.
@@TodaysTask that is a great upgrade to the basement i like it a lot that's something ill definitely consider when im a home owner
I watched this before I started my first ever egress install
How much does this cost to have done?
It really depends, it costs a lot more now than it did, but about $1,900 when I did it.
This guy is amazing
How big does the window have to be for egress?
I'm a professional concrete cutter and do these all the time. You're wanna look up building code for your area. No part 2??
Good job 💪 😎
I know the window is 48x48 but what were the dimensions of the cut you made to accommodate that window
They are exactly 48x48 the glass size is much smaller, but all windows are measured by their opening.
Let there be light...and there was 👍🏻😂 huge difference.
I wonder if cutting out that many windows affects the integrity of the foundation ?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What does it cost to have a window that size put in?
just to have the windows cut was about $2,000, I will recoup all of it on resell and if staying in the house the daylight is well worth it.
JOEL!!!! GREAT VIDEO SO THATS HOW IT IS DONE. WHAT A DIFFERENCE THAT MADE TO THE BASEMENT. YOUR VIDEOS ARE
TERRIFIC.🔨🔨🔧⚒⚒⚒

Funny, 811 in a lot of Canada is a heath line
HA HA. I wondered how different that number would be for different areas.
has home invasions gone up proportional to egress installs? Seems like the easiest and most hidden way to break into a person's home.
No, but escaping house fires has gone up.
@@TodaysTask they really have data on that? If so I doubt they ask a follow-up question; could you have escaped without using the egress window? I'm not an anti- I just think it opens up a great way for a thief to get in.
I don't see anything marked on the ground
The weight of the trailer ,and the brakes on the truck is the main reason for safety.
Is it just me that sees no sill plate under the joists?
Where's the egress window install video?
Did you have to have an engineer involved?
With all the ground dug up hope you water proof and drain the whole outside .cause if not just a flood waiting to happen
It's called a ring saw.
