I like that they're changing up the game's default setting and releasing some interesting terrain, but I'm with you on the big box. It's a whole lot of money (likely to be pushing NZ$500) and you'll be able to buy just the bits you need in a few weeks anyway. And no shade on the two included warbands, but I prefer the look of Be'lakor's Chosen.
Comparing prices, the Fallout: Wasteland Warfare starter set and the accompanying red rocket station terrain set (cardstock terrain) costs $150.86 USD. The relatively new Deadzone 3rd edition starter set costs $125 USD and comes with all the miniatures and terrain to play. Corvus Belli's Infinity two-player starter set Operation: Blackwind is 124.95 Euros or roughly 127.39 USD. That one likewise comes with cardstock scenery. All of these products do vary wildly in materials used and reuse of older sprues in the case of Deadzone 3rd edition. If a higher price is needed to cover development costs, I'd think something like $180 USD could cover that given the prices of other products on the market. Its almost like they're trying to price their plastic scenery to a similar degree to the warband miniatures.
The two warbands looking pretty good. The terrain doesn't appeal to me. Ugly trees and I am tired of all those huge skulls and bones (all the time, or well, it feels all the time). Not too long ago I purchased Catacombs, and that was a really nice set.
Cost to produce is through the roof in every industry because national goverments have printed money like there's no tomorrow and are continuing to do so; as a result markets are factoring future inflation into their current prices as people are desperate to get rid of their money and sink it into something the government can't steal via inflation. They're happy to pay over the odds today, because they know that it will be a while until prices catch up with the increase in the money supply. These prices probably aren't as bad as things will get. We're either going to get full on hyper-inflation, or a recession, or both, so this is probably a good buy in the long run.
If you already play Warcry, this isn't the box for you. Revised stats for existing bands are already being released online, the minis and scenery will be available separately later. This is a starter set. Buy from your local stockist and save 20-30%, it works out just fine. two warbands at £25-£30 each Core book £20, faction book £10, terrain box £50-£60. That's your £140 at stockist prices let alone the GW direct markup, and I'm paying £112 for the box set. It's a bargain.
It is pretty poor value, even compared to other GW products, just look at octarius... Compared to other companies it's atrocious... Carnevale is like £55 in most stores and is designed by the guy who made mordhiem.... I know what I would rather get...
I have yet to see it listed for $230 anywhere. Seems alright to me considering this would be my first dive into warcry. Rules, cards, terrain, 2 teams, etc.
I think that's likely RRP discounted stores will be less. It's not terrible for someone getting into it, but it's not as good value as the first box and they are releasing the rules for free apparently
If compared to the original Warcry box it really falls short. You got more terrain, 2 Warbands and 12 creatures (29 models in total). And it was cheaper than this new starter set.
With red harvest and catacombs still out there to purchase that should have told GW there is not that much interest. They should have really lowered the price on this. Its funny how once prices go up they never seem to go down.it amazes me how much the price of box sets has gone up since i got into the hobby 3 years ago.
@@AlwaysStrikesBack Because your memories are too short. If we were still paying lead/pewter Metal model prices the hobby would be dead. Tech gave us plastic, resin and now 3d printed to keep things affordable. I'm buying 3d printed resin models at retail prices including shipping that I was paying for metal models off the rack 35 years ago.
Ya. I'm not buying. Sticking with all my Warcry v1 and don't have to spend any more money to keep enjoying it. While the Ghur set will have rules for what is in the box, that's all you get. If you want to use existing or new stuff there's a stack of rapidly obsoleting books GW wants to sell you.
It is atrocious value for money, but if enough people buy it... Ultimately, GW is trying to recapture that profit surge they had during the Pandemic, stemming the loss in share value so they can look more attractive to investors. The problem being that 2020 was the perfect storm of people being furloughed, having way more time on their hands to hobby with, and still getting pay cheques. But with energy bills due to double, and food prices rising month after month, how many people are going to have the spare cash to shell out £140 on non-essentials? It's also kind of worrying because that's probably what they're going to see the price of the new Kill Team boxset at. It's a god-damned death spiral, at this point: Fewer people buy their products, so they raise their prices, so fewer people are left in the hobby...
They believe that hobbies are recession proof, I am not so sure about that if you price your self out. The problem is GW are going to stop people jumping on their hype trains and they will not like the result
Yeah they should of been doing the opposite as sales lessened, they should of got cheaper with better deals. Instead they behave like the star wars imperials and tighten the fist which only drives more people against them. The fools.
Plenty of reasonably priced Indy games and generic, model agnostic rule sets out there. The hobby will do quite well in the recession. GW maybe not so much.
Let's face iy GW has no reason to raise the price on this set, it's just a money grab to make sure their shareholders are happy. More and more people are buying less for multiple reasons, the cost of essentials is skyrocketing and people no longer have the time to sit down and paint with most places trying to get back to normal (people going back to work). I personally have given up on GW games because of the pricing ( I can afford to pay the prices I choose not to) KT21 was the last straw, just to get the 2 books needed to play is $110US and if I want the"elite" rules for my faction I either have to pay for an over priced box or wait until GW releases the models and book..I also do not like the lack of customization for models that KT18 had
The new terrain isn’t doing anything for me. Similar to the Ghurr set for AoS, it’s just back to SKULLS and MORE SKULLS. I was hoping GW had moved on from that.
I just didn't think the Ghurr was worth all the money it costs ($220). Get rid of the two Domicile Shell pieces plus the Guardian Idol and knock $100 off the price and I would have bought it. Then I would try to flip the 'Krondspine Incarnate of Ghur' and the game boards (at a deep discount) to make some of that money back, because all I wanted is the Cleansing Aqualith and the Megadroth Remains. Unfortunately, the Ebay flippers for that set seem to all be from the UK so the shipping to the US is horrendous, so I still don't have either. Maybe if they get sold on their own I'll find a nice 3rd party seller offering them at a somewhat decent price.
@@AlwaysStrikesBack seems like new ones so all the other existing warbands can be played with the new rules.....so now im contemplating if i need to buy the compendium thats gonna come in the future. But i'll download the free stuffs first n see how it goes from there.
Since last year, I'm done with GW. Their politics and their prices are insane. I bought a resin 3D printer, subscribe some patreons, and I'm very happy. And if I want to play warcry, I use some proxies. With the amount of money I would pay for those GW miniatures, I print tons and tons of other cool miniatures.
Yes its price tag is too high in my opinion, and it seems GW is counting a lot on gamers sharing a set in order to alleviate the relative cost of boxed sets. I have no interest in both the warbands included so I'm struggling to justify myself buying this set. It's a very bad move on GWs part to not bring out the core book along with this set but on the other hand, all Warcry players received the rules for free lately along with free updated scrolls for all fighters. Me and my mates started playing those rules alongside the old narrative rules and this worked out fine imo. We're planning on completing our warcry 1.0 quests and moving onto Warcry 2.0 quests. I've simply made a hand made document of the new narrative play section using the trillions of review videos out there. We don't need the core book as of now really. Hopefully the three other sets planned for this year will be on the cheaper side. We will see. Still believe it's a great game (the best system out there) and I love to play it with our group!

As a big fan of GW skirmish games, I need to stop & recognise that GW really seem to want to charge more than is frankly reasonable, rather than me fondling my FOMO.
The two week delay in the compendium could be based on sales from similar releases were maybe GW noticed a fair number of customers that didn't order everything all at once. Maybe they figured that some people are having to spread their purchases out across multiple paychecks and don't want to encourage reckless spending from customers that have both FOMO and poor impulse control (something all too common within this hobby). GW knows they'll get their money eventually, so maybe they've just learned to be a little patient about it. As for the value of the box, it really depends on how much of it you want plus what you think you can get by flipping the parts you don't. Current warbands cost $60 (US), the board is $30, and at that point you're at $150 which is $80 shy of the $230 price tag. Those two books and the terrain are going to cost way more than that, and their costs can probably be fairly well estimated based on similar products. If I wanted everything but the warbands, I could probably get $50 for each one, meaning that everything else would only be $130 which is a lot less than they will cost individually later on. Plus, these days I buy sets like these from 3rd party sellers so I won't be paying that $230 to start with.
No, this isn't to discourage wreckless spending, quite contrary, it's to EN-courage wreckless spending. Go ahead and throw a given new edition's releases all in your cart at once. The price gets shocking at an alarming rate. But if you can only buy one at a time, because you have to have it now...because it might not be there later...Well, it's only 140 or 230 or whatever it is where you live. Then comes the book...only about 25-50...maybe 60 now or 70. Oh, and you also need this other book... and now the new expansion comes out with the GW DLC... only 150. Get my drift. All that at once is the price of a PC or something of actual value, not just plastic. The value in these models is only what WE choose to give them, not the ever-expanding arbitrary number that GW says something is worth. All the while, different things of just the same quality can be gotten elsewhere.

I don't think I called this a review? And it turned out to be completely wrong because they ended up releasing the rules for free. Also the box was on the thumbnail and was the new box at the time.
I agree we didn't really need any rule changes, this should of just been a good old expansion.
One that doesn't cost an absurd amount - god i hate this company i'm so tired of this endless nonsense....
a lot of people feel that way.
Just 2 weeks? Seems like an overreaction for click bait. 2 months I might agree, but not 2 weeks.
Well, I stand by it except they are going to give away the rules this week, so I was wrong anyway.
