They definitely need an always available starter box, and a pack like the Kill Team pack with tokens etc; at least if they are going to continue releasing boxes as they have been doing. But I couldn't disagree more about data cards, GW should be moving away from printed materials, in my opinion; and they started off well with this edition of Warcry, releasing free rules and all the stats; they just need to keep them up-to-date with errata changes, keep on top of new releases, and extend the warband builder to create a full PDF of all of the warband's rules. No one trying to get started should have to buy an out of print book and past issue(s) of a magazine just to use their existing Warhammer Underworlds models either.
Oh don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the PDFs. But when you are teaching players and introducing them to a game, you know what really helps? Cards. I’ve taught a lot of a warcry and time and time again new players engage more with cards infront of them than a PDF on their phone. I don’t think I made it clear in my video (partially because it was beyond they scope of what I wanted to do with the video), but the FREE materials for Warcry are excellent. An amazing change that I want to see more of. I just think they are clunky and not as engaging for newbies who are just starting. That and the compendium is information overload if you are pulling from AOS factions and whatnot. Thanks for watching, it’s great getting a differing perspective on things.
Well, if Warcry ever gets shut down, Mordheim taught me that it will never really go away. The passion of the fans in that community have kept it going to this day, and it got canceled over 15 years ago or so. Also Mordheim is just grand. To be honest, I didn't notice that Warcry was without a getting started set... that feels like a real misstep. I'm a new Warcry player, too, and I didn't even realize this. I just wandered over from killteam and Necromunda, wanting a fantasy based skirmish game and I've been having a blast. But for a fresher faced person coming into the hobby (I've also been in tabletop since the late 90s) this issue feels a bit like a locked door, if you follow my meaning
Oh man, I was playing LATE 90s, being a 90s kid. I totally missed out on Mordheim and it kills me because that game looked so damn cool. Honestly, when I noticed Warcry had no starter, it all started to make sense. Anecdotally there are so few stores that actually run Warcry. But you know what they do run? Underworlds, and that game has a Starter Set. Cheap too at only 40 quid. Warcry is competing with another game in the same universe, that is also skirmish scale. Bonkers.
Yes, as someone who mostly played blood bowl during the years it wasn't supported by gw and who's favourite format in magic the gathering isn't supported by Wizards I can agree that sometimes the game is better when the company can't or won't mess around with the rules and it's only fan supported:)
@@wargamesontoast If you guys like Mordheim, you really need to check out Frostgrave, from Osprey Games. Similar scale and premise, but a cleaner, more modern rule set. Definitely worth looking into. Frankly, I don't see Underworlds and Warcry as being all that competitive with one another. I personally find the deck-building aspect of Underworlds a deal-breaker. I think the cynical marketing idea behind Underworlds was to create a game that would lure Magic the Gathering players over into the minis space. I personally *hate* deck-building, and although I buy the occasional Underworlds warband purely for the models, I've never enjoyed the game.
Damn, they've got an awesome first starter set - full of terrain, playable warbands, rules, etc. And one season after another it started to go somewhere else from right way to do, in my opinion.
I am a big fan of Warcry but am of the opinion that the first starter set was the best. Two warbands, card sets, dice, measuring stick and a great variety of terrain. Catacombs was off the wall and sets since then have been less than perfect for new players. I tend to ignore GWs constant changing of stats and still use my old cards as I don't play competitively.
it also had 12 Chaotic beasts in the box with cards for both players to use them. that original set was fantastic and really worth the price. So were those original ravaged land sets and the first wave of faction boxes. they were all a great price for GW stuff.
@@djangofett4879 Beasts as well? Damn. I am still looking at picking those up myself, but having them just in a starter box? That's amazing value. The Beasts are so splashable, like, I love running hounds in BoC.
Getting into Warcry is more complicated than the game itself. The OG Starter Box was incredible and I always thought it was odd that every Warcry set since wasn't quite on the same scale. I really tired to get into Warcry, but as much as I enjoyed the ruleset, the content was just too all over the place and hard to source. Instead I've been exploring indy and homebrew skirmish games like Necropolis28, Relicblade and Brawl Arcane. I'm hoping to try Sword Weirdos out soon too.
I think they're doing pretty well with Warcry. Rules are good and available for free online, along the rules for individual factions, scope is acceptable for newbies, you can play pretty much any AoS model they sell.. and I see a lot of new players picking the game up. Cheap and easy starter would help, but I still think, that this is currently the best game from GW and also the easiest to start despite the lack of starter set
Something to comsider is that AOS isnt nearly as popular as 40k so you cant really compare warcry sales to kill team. The original box and the catacombs box took a while to sell out. The kill team ShadowVaults set shouldn't be considered the standard. its considered a botched release (release a box several months early and dont make enough of them to fulfill pre-order). All of the previous season kill team box sets (chalnath, octarius, moroch and Nachmund) stuck around for a while before selling out. into the dark even is still easy to find and i bought it at a deep discount (like 40% off). ShadowVaults was a botch job. they simply are underproducing kill team this year. they reprinted the rogue trader models and now theyre sold out everywhere. Blooded, sold out everywhere. Kasrkin box, sold out almost immediately everywhere. they cant even keep up with just the basic kits.
No that’s certainly a fair point. I do recall the starter set for KT being hard to grab as well because then Orks we’re lovely. I do think it’s unfair to compare sales so I didn’t spend too much time comparing, but I think it’s absolutely fair game to raise eyebrows at the lack of support. No starter set and not “essentials” kit it’s a hindrance I’d like to see amended for sure!
@@wargamesontoast absolutely right, it needs a starter kit like Kill Team has. Something under $100 USD that has a basic rules digest and all your tokens and dice and maybe bring back some 1st edition warbands in that box so theyre easier to get. When i opened sundered fate and saw that there were no tokens, i jad an AVGN moment "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!" Not a big deal for me, but a big problem for newcomers.
@@djangofett4879 Oh my god, the lack of tokens. I picked up Ghur so I have a bunch (I want so many more though...), but I can't imagine how awful Warcry is without them. How do you mark ANYTHING without them? Random D20's? Loads of extra dice just lying around the place? Seems messy. They should have, at a bare minimum, included another punch card of tokens.
You make a lot of good points, and it shows in the game community in our area. We have four games stores in our area (2 GW, 2 indie). None of them host Warcry events and when asked, they don't hear any requests for them. One of the GW stores had one a few months ago, and my gf and I were the only ones who showed up. We got started in the game by picking up a box of Bladeborn at Barnes & Noble for $50. This was a great introduction to Warcry. Too bad it's now out of print because it provided a streamlined, beginner-friendly version of Warcry, most of the tokens and dice, and all the models in the set can be combined to make a Slaves to Darkness warband. This meant we only needed to pick up another warband, craft some terrain, and buy a set of battleplan cards to start playing the full version of Warcry.
That sounds like a perfect way to start Warcry actually. My local stores don’t run Warcry at all, but you know what they do run? Underworlds. From what I’ve seen that game is EXCELLENT, but having a direct competitor to your own game, in the same universe, and having it also be a Skirmish game, has to have an impact on Warcry. Warcry is such a tight system, and seeing it not having as much support and player count is just sad.
Hey, don’t take my comments as a super negative. I LOVE the Hunters, they just play uniquely and that can be hard to grasp if you go in guns blazing. Always go with what you like over what some mook on the internet says!
@@N3rdNetwork Exactly! I picked up Wood Elves in 8th Edition Fantasy before their update. Their book was 2 Editions (I think?) out of date. Made learning everything else a breeze. If you can win with the hardest, you can win with anything! Also, side note, Hunters are top 3 for me in Warcry. Really fun Warband.
I feel like it was the realm these sets were in. The terrain was all so similar. At least that didn't help. I feel like the same thing is happening with KT. Warcry as a core set plus a few terrain kits was better than 4 "core set" size kits. I think the over releasing kits is the problem as well. It's just too much to keep up with and isn't worth all the backlog
Your comments on how GW could improve Warcry on-boarding are right on point. Here's what I'd recommend for Warcry: 1. An evergreen 2-player starter set, like the Kill Team ($99 price point, two teams, small-format core rulebook, dice, ruler, 1 or 2 generic terrain sprues). This should *always* be in print. They can change out the warbands every year or two, if they want, but a starter set should always be available. 2. Extend seasons to two years, with semi-annual box sets. Include the season's generic terrain sprues in the first box, then move it to a stand-alone box for the rest of the season once the second box comes out. Boxes 2-4 in each season should include only the unique terrain sprues, to cut the price down to $140-$150. Redundant terrain sprues kept me from buying boxes 2-4 from the Heart of Ghur season. 3. Make the seasons terrain a more broadly useful than the meat forests were. Part of the value of the seasons concept was that if you bought multiple Warcry boxes, you accumulated enough terrain to populate a full-sized AOS table--but the Ghur meat trees and bamboo platforms really don't lend themselves to AOS-sized armies. The whole season had a very "guerrillas-in-the-jungle" feel, which just doesn't work with full-sized armies. The theme was another reason for me *not* to buy the subsequent season boxes. 4. Create a "Getting Started in Warcry" PDF, with an onboarding roadmap laid out in very simple terms. I'm not talking about a stripped-down rulebook here; I'm talking about a what-to-buy guide for people considering starting the game.
This is all great stuff. I’d like to add that I got burned out with seasonal boxes very quickly. The models were great but it was almost a chore to buy them all in these big boxed sets. Not only that, the current Warcry Starter is, imo, terrible. Not enough models to actually play a standard game of Warcry and not a single piece of terrain that plays into the awesome terrain rules that make Warcry so dynamic. It feels like an Underworlds set that was tarted up - because it WAS an Underworlds set tarted up. Honestly, as much as I love Warcry, I can’t help but feel like it’s on life support atm. Held together with a vague promise of seasonal content that will burn the player base out all the while alienating new players with inadequate onboarding and a wildly imbalanced competitive scene. Feeling less and less motivated the more I think about it. I could be doomsaying though, who knows?
@@wargamesontoast I think a lot of the problem with Warcry is that it's the game with the smallest fan-base of its open-ended games, and that fan base just isn't large enough to support GW's usual (lazy) marketing strategy of selling more stuff to the same people, rather than trying to sell the same stuff to new people. There aren't enough Warcry players that are so dedicated that they buy every big box set. And three months is just too damned often to buy two warbands plus a full board of terrain--especially if you're trying to keep up with Kill Team at the same time, as I'm sure many skirmish game players do. I strongly believe that both games would fare better, in the long run, if they released two big boxes per year--at most--alternating quarters: Kill Team in Q1 and 3, Warcry in Q2 and 4, or vice versa. I *hope* that if GW does abandon the game, or allows it to languish, that a fan-supported community will keep it alive, as happened for Mordheim and Blood Bowl. Warcry is the best-designed rule set GW currently offers; it's a pity that they can't figure out how to promote and support it better. But four big boxes of meat trees in a single year was a MAJOR mistake. How could they not see that in advance?
Picked up warcry this fall and love your videos! It would be great to get an update on this in the new year - a gut check of if / how things have changed and where it looks like we’re heading.
This is my first GW game I started buying for in January. While I have experience with other IP’s like Bolt Action, Legion and X-Wing… it’s been an interesting treasure hunt trying to find things to buy for this game. I agree, that is making it tough for newer players. I’d have to say that their official GW builder on their community page, not displaying stats for the units you want to build a warband with, is also a surprise. Is this all to just sell books like the compendium???
You’d think that not having the rules display on their list builder would be to sell books… but most the factions rules in Warcry are freely available. I think it’s more bad design than any sales based tactic.
@@wargamesontoast I find it pretty cumbersome to flip back and forth between the unit PDFs and the builder on my mobile when I want to review stats while list building. Especially when GWs PDFs have scripting errors and frequently reload themselves back to the first page.
I was just about to buy my Heart of Ghur box when I stumbled upon your video. Those were some valid points you've raised. Unfortunately this material has filled me with doubt - I already play a dead game (WFB) which has been somewhat disheartening, seeing a good idea slipping into oblivion due to a lack of support from GW. However, this time the game mechanics seem to be perfectly fine (rompared to overcomplicated WFB) and the initial cost to have a full experience is not as stonewalling. Hopefuly GW will keep this game supported well enough to grow into something more less fringe. Guess I'll be buying that box, hoping you'll keep me fed with WARCRY content :)
The game is getting a starter box shortly which should make it far easier to get into. It’s low entry cost and it’s quickness of play makes it very easy to pick up as well, which should give it some pull once people start picking it up. Not that Warcry is dead of course. Just a bit niche
I just bought Horns or Ghur and have been going through Warcry content on TH-cam. I normally don't play anything competitively, but I really appreciate your analysis of the war bands, models, and their strengths/weaknesses. Thanks for the great content.
2024, I'm looking to get into warcry. I looked at the starter packs, they gave literally what you asked for. Dices, terrain, stick to meassure, tokens and 4 models. The great thing about this set is, if you have an underworld box, you can make a full team out of these two boxes, and play both Underworld and Warcry. Thankfully I already have a few sigmar figures, so I can actually make a 1k(995) point warband. I'm considering to get "Age of Sigmar: Warcry - Crypt of Blood Starter Set (2023)", as it will give me the last pieces I have to make two full warbands and all the etc. items to play
@@wargamesontoast THey were like: - Dices.. yes yes.. - Terrain.. yes yes.. - 2 warbands, small but two... - Kinda cheap? yes yes... - Tokens, yep yep.. - Board-- yep.. - Rule book? hmm- yep They basically got everything. Except its not two full warbands, but meh.. for another 50$ you have that with underworld
I'm trying to get started in warcry right now. I was a warhammer player when i was younger(15 years ago) and warcry and kill team seemed like ideal places to jump back in without committing to larger armys. i ordered the new nightmare quest box thinking it was a "starter set" sort of box. I'm running into this issue right now and finding it very discouraging. These exact issues of needing to buy multple books, not having appropriate tokens, ect is really frustrating and is honestly feeling extremely tempting to try and find pirated verions of the books online. I spent $200 on a box that i thought would at least get me started. now i find out I need to buy at least the core book and really should probably get the compedium as well and even then I don't really have everything you should to start. Its really frustrating
Thankfully the rules are all available online by GW directly. Unfortunately the tokens are going to be a bit more awkward to sort. Improvisation will be your best friend on that front. Google Warcry Downloads for rules :)
Good points. I have been playing since the start. The Starter Box was a good introduction, but they don't have it for sale any longer and the original version isn't using current rules.
I just atarted Warcry. Managed to find a brand new Catacombs set from a reputable tabletop games shop. It arrived yesterday and I'm fully concentrating on 1.0 for now until Im familiar with it. Great content too, subscribed.
i just got started with warcry and i love it, it does everything right what i dislike with killteam and just in general it's such a straight forward and nice ruleset, def my fav gw game i did wish they had like warcry starter box that's just 1 team with maybe a lil bit of trerrain so if you and another player have it, you have quite a battlefield, but also you have some cards than and maybe a lil rule panflet also a remidner with the warcry boxes, dominion etc also didn't sell out, i think gw actuall knows how much demand there is and can meet the demand peeps ask for ^^ i don't think compendium is a problem if you just buyt models you like but i started with kruleboyz from dominion :p i do wish they brought pack those terrain packs i was never able to buy, they even had layout cads q.q
You’re very right. I love the designs and aesthetics of the Warcry warbands (different cultures within chaos pantheon, different spins on popular big brother factions) but the buy in was always TOO HIGH. If the start set coming this summer is around $60 they may have sold me on it, otherwise that money from my wallet is going to more Underworlds warbands. 😅
Underworlds being so cheap is always a knock on Warcry. I love the game, but as a newbie the hobby grabbing a 40 quid box and needing less time to paint and build before playing is very appealing. Warcry coming in at 100+ is a much harder sell
@@DustyLamp I agree with you, their prices have risen, but I never pay full price so that’s one way to look at it. The other aside point I have is the core sets seem to be of value; $80-90 for two warbands, new boards, 2 rivals decks, and extra dice. That’s much more appealing than the Warcry box prices. Compared to most large board game crowd funding releases every games workshop price point is absolute garbage and only makes sense from a veteran or addicts standpoint.
Warcry is hands-down GW's best game they have released yet, and that includes Mordheim for me, a game I've played for yonks. Glad you think so too. Some interesting musings here!
As an outsider, i agree with a lot of what you said. It seems like a way to get a little more money out of people already playing AoS. It feels like it should be the other way around. They should make Warcry cheap and approachable to get a huge audience knowing that some percentage of that audience will become AoS whales. If you look at Magic the Gathering, Commander is the casual format that keeps an absolutely massive playerbase engaged even if they never play regular Magic. They also have a draft format which is really cheap to play once a month or so. Games Workshop could gain a lot by making Warcry a low cost entry point to suck in new players. Another big factor is LGS support. If i get into AoS or 40k, it will probably be by buying one box once or twice a year and then slowly painting it over the next few months. If my LGS did some kind of event to get people into Warcry or Kill Team, i would probably go for it. Like if we bought a box, we could use their snippers and hobby knives and glue for free for a few hours while they sold us on the game. Then next month they could sell a paint bundle with a certain number of paints and brushes at a reduced cost and they could do a "paint along" kind of thing. That would be huge- especially if my friends from the store were participating.
Warcry is super casual friendly with enough competitive chops to allow people to expand. It doesn’t get much support from GW when compared to their other games (even smaller ones like Kill Team or Underworlds) and frankly, most LGS in my area barely know it exists. It’s a real shame because Warcry really is their best game by a long way and it deserves more love. Not to mention the community is outstanding.
I've been trying to get into warcry but I'm finding choosing a faction more difficult than anything else. Going from playing WFB, then skipping Aos, none of the factions seem interesting or hold enough significance for me to get invested into the game.
Came into warcry through catacombs and it’s been brilliant set to get started. I haven’t felt the need to go into ghur yet as it just doesn’t appeal. I’m really hoping the next season will see a new starter and new location.
Blood Bowl is their best game but I'll give warcry a close second 😉 I'm very casual in the game. I got in a few months after Ghur's release. I prefer skirmish to army and that informed my choice a lot. I also got into the game specifically because I could field monsters. Shortly after getting into it my big things got nerfed which sucks for me but from what I'm hearing a lot of other people were happy about it and I'm not stranger to it. I'm still having fun with it but a few issues: -The majority of factions are just humans in cosplay (I always pick something that isn't humans because I play fantasy games to experience fantasy). This is a personal preference thing but "the human in spiky armor faction" describes a fair few of the factions. -There is no centralized database for US tournaments. I've tried asking around in Facebook groups or other players and no one can indicate a solid way to find events! Blood Bowl has the NAF, card games have primary websites or apps that list official events, etc. I would cover a warcry event if I knew where any existed. -When I talk to game store workers or call to see if they have certain Warcry product I have to describe it to them because nobody ever knows what I'm talking about. If I didn't do my own research I would have been sold into some other game instead. Overall I like the game a lot and will continue enjoying it but it would be cool to see the community come together as one community in some sort of centralized online location. Also love the channel. It's perfect for leaving on at work.
I haven’t played modern Blood Bowl, but I am so close to dropping the cash on it. I loved it back in the day. Warcry absolutely has issues, and the “dudes in armour” statement is very true. Thankfully the visual design is quite outlandish. Bringing in Lizards in Sundered Fate was a lovely change. I highly recommend the Warcry Reddit. It’s a great place to just chat. Nice people over there. Thanks for the kind words man, it means a lot
@@wargamesontoast BB is life; totally not biased. Fr though, blood bowl 3 isn't as broken as it was at launch so it's not the worst way to get some games in. The newest tabletop version is my favorite by far and it feels a lot more fair than previous editions without losing the BB charm. If it's of interest I've got some live event coverage on my channel too. It's amazing how the game has stuck for this long at the level it's at.
@@N3rdNetwork I actually bought BB3 after your first comment itching to give the game ago (negative reviews be damned). I am well and truly looking at buying the starter set and running the game with my son, haha. I will absolutely check out your coverage! (subbed!)
Nice video, mate! I 100% agree. I'm playing with a local gaming group at the moment, but trying to get my own set is a bit of a nightmare. As you said, it should be simple, provide a starter set that's always available and problem solved. I'm going to send GW an email with a link to this video, hopefully they'll take it on board.
This video is the perfect encapsulation of how I feel rn. I've never played a tabletop game, but started painting recently. I know basically nothing about any of the games. My brother on the other hand is really into Horus Heresy. I wanted to get into Warcry since I prefer the fantasy aesthetic but there's just no good way to get in. I assumed I would be able to buy a simple 2 player starter set to play together but it isn't really there unless I want to go to ebay and pay over the odds. I've already painted some Gutrippaz (from Dominion boxes broken up ebay) and would ideally like to use them. I don't want to go buy a big box with complicated factions, buy the rule book and then buy the army books if I'm not sure I will even like it.... I've already spent a lot of money on painting and building stuff. At this point I'm probably just gonna wait until the new 40k starter set is out and try that instead, though I really don't like the idea of needing a huge army, complicated rules and a lot of time to move so many models around. I really wish there was a simple starter set with Orcs!
Gutrippas are actually excellent troops in Warcry. Throw in a few characters and you will be good to go. Shaman’s are really solid for your leader, Rock Troggoths makes amazing Thralls, and a Brute Boss or Mega Boss from Iron Jaws are really solid Allies you can take. You can get the rules for Warcry free online via GW directly as well as the PDFs for Orcs under the Destruction PDF
@@wargamesontoast Wow, those troggoths look incredible. I'm not sure I will do the sculpts justice but definitely gonna look into picking some up. I had no idea you could find the rules free. Thank you so much!
So I play both Kill Team and Warcry. To me the biggest problem is the compedium teams eclipse the bespoke teams in every way. In Kill Team the compedium was a stop gap till there were more bespoke warbands, and while a few compedium teams are still viable, the bespoke teams are just better. This is a positive and a negative, its a positive because we can use our own Sigmar models. As a negative, whats the reason to purchase box sets, the terrain, or if you really like the warbands, but if you like the warband wait till they are released individually. Its really about the terrain. I know people don't like the fomo boxes, but GW just needs to print more specifically for KT at the moment or do multiple print runs, thats a different issue, and easily fix able. However if there is no incentive to buy the boxes, then GW will never know if the game is successful. Underworlds has been pretty successful, and you can't use other sigmar models, so to play you have to buy the boxes. They know pretty much how well the game is selling and if its popular, and if they should continue to produce it. Just my 2 pence.
Every edition every 3 years should have a starter set similar to the original one. A fair amount of platforms, basic warbands, rulebook, cards, dice, ruler etc. No fancy or funny rules. Those should be in the expansions and subsequent releases. The game is brilliant, even if you get started with any terrain set.
Im just getting into warcry, having picked up heart of ghur - thr only thing throwing me is building the models - with some commentary on getting two of the warband boxes to build out a list - so theres a fear of building wrong
For rotmire creed I’d build the dude who can take a net, with a net. Your chaff can either go more defensive with spears or more aggressive with 2 weapons. I personally prefer spears since the +1T is very nice and the R2 is lovely. For Horns, your only real choices are on your desecraters(?). Shields or two weapons. In this case, I think both are fine so build for preference. Shield is a lot more resilient thanks to T5 but the two weapons plays into a more aggressive style which might be more your thing
@@HappyDuude it’s a great set and it’s a crime that GW stopped selling it. Both factions are a lot of fun and are reasonably competitive if you wanted to dive deep into hardcore warcry in the future haha
Thanks for the video! You make som really good points. On a side note, man if i had the skill and speed to assemble and paint a band in an evening it would solve sooo many of my hobby problems:)
As a die-hard Kill Team player, I have to agree with the, "learning curve," to get into Warcry, even when overall it's a more steamlined game! I want to get into it, but unfortunately my community does 40K, so Kill Team is my go-to for skirmish. With any luck, Warhammer 10th Edition and Sigmar 4th will learn from their skirmish companions and become a better game. Awesome content mate, look forward to more, cheers,
I'm just getting into Warcry. Love the S1 starter set but was too late to get it. Found a good deal on Catacombs to get me started with war bands, tokens, dice, boards and some original terrain.
I'm about to start playing WC, but i so confused about the current rulebook, missions etc. Exept for rulebook I don't know where get some mission cards, for example. As you said, there should've been some generic starter set, ot at least some clear way to get all of the essentials.
Sadly the only way to get cards is to buy one of the big boxes like Heart Of Ghur. There are missions in the Core Rule Book too, but the selection process is far less smooth than just drawing cards.
I agree 100%. I missed the initial starter box, and without it I can never seem to get the wandering monsters that came with it- I have had to sub in all kinds of other things- which is ok but I actually want to have the real things. I went backwards from Beastgrave to get the previous Warhammer Underworlds boxes and even the WU Starter set, and I would do the same instantly if GW put out a permanent Warcry Starter Box. Next up is the cards issue- I hate trying to play the game out of a set of books, and don't like the idea of playing with crappy photocopies/ prints from the pdfs. I would gladly buy a box of updated cards every year- just sell them to me GW! Lastly, as for basic terrain, I had to source and 3d print some- which works out very well, but that took a lot of time and expense- I would have gladly used the core terrain form a core starter box. Maybe GW is watching the barometer of content creators like you are. I will help out and start creating content so they can see another entry into the ring for what I agree is really one of their top games of all time!
The monstrous Allies are a nightmare, i had to borrow them for my videos. I’ve into recently managed to get hold of all 3. If you make a channel, I’ll absolutely give it a watch. I’m always looking for more Warcry content!
Dude, if you get the tome of champions 2020 (you can still find it super cheap being 1.0 Warcry) you can have additional roaming beasts, rules say you can use them instead of the chaotic beasts, some of those are pretty common a cheap minis, being chainrasp, spirit host, wight king, cairn wraith, skeleton, grave guard, tomb banshee, they follow the same general rules (territorial predators and bestial intellects), but they have their own abilities (Restless Undead's); there's also another group of 3 minis (squig and two troggoths), called wild cave ceatures, same as above with their own abilities. In this tome, as a plus, you can find the rules to play Warcry in solo, which is great.
@@DANNYtheBOY11 That sounds good- I always like to have a mess of potential wandering monsters! I still want to track down the core set beasts to add to my collection- are any of the content creators churning out a "Monster manual" for Warcry?
@@wargamesontoast Agreed- the monsters as allies is not what I want to do- I am running a mod to play the game in a cooperative manner with multiple warbands going on a campaign mostly together and sometimes in a bit of a race but not head-to-head. Some of the games will be monster hunts and ambushes in camp... which is where the monsters come into play.
I just tried to buy a started set for warcry and the guy in my LHS sold me the a set without the core rules! They were so embarrassed - I swapped it for other stuff and still can’t can’t play warcry!!
Thankfully the core rules for Warcry are free on Warhammer Community! If you search Warcry Downloads in Google, you should be taken to the correct page with the Core Rules, FAQ/Errata, and all the Compendium rules. This link should also work: www.warhammer-community.com/warcry-downloads/
I'm a brand new player and new to Warhammer in general, only started collecting and painting a couple months ago. Hello from Texas USA! I think Warcry, as long as GW sticks with it, will begin to pick up growth, Warhammer as a franchise is starting to crack the mainstream. Between Total War Warhammer 3 getting a ton of good press, Henry Caville trying to get a 40k TV series going, Vermintide and Darktide(Despite the issues), and the upcoming Space Marine 2 game, public knowledge of the Warhammer universe seems to really be picking up steam. I think GW got caught in a weird spot with this seasonal release schedule. 4 boxes that are supposed to culminate into a full size Age of Sigmar board using matching themed terrain, only the first box in the set acting as the starter box (Heart of Ghur) having the actual core rules and tokens included with the rest being just expansions to it. Heart of Ghur and the subsequent boxes appear to have been designed specifically for existing and invested Warcry players. GW may have thought that they had already reached all potential new players and wanted to focus on expanding the world for the fans, but now they have a new wave of people that are interested in the Warhammer universe but prefer the fantasy aesthetic over 40k. I'm building a Khorne army for AoS so I picked up Bloodhunt to have a fully playable game at home between lugging my army to my local store (and get those SWEET Claws of Karanak models), and was absolutely shocked to find it had no rules, no tokens, and no tools to help play the game. I had to hunt down all of that online and hand make my own tokens. Once I actually was able to get a game going though, it was FANTASTIC, such a fun game with interesting mechanics and so much meat to sink your teeth into. I really hope people will get the chance to experience it for what it is, a truly great game that more than fills the gap between the full scale AoS battles. The terrain for Heart of Ghur I think can still fit into a generic fantasy setting as long as you get a little creative with the paint scheme. I'm planning on gluing flock to the trees to cover up the claws. My hope is that GW recognizes this influx of players, finishes out this Heart of Ghur block, and then releases a proper starter kit that stays in stock with generic fantasy themed terrain. I don't think Warcry is in any danger of getting killed off since it's only fair that their games mirror each other, 40k to AoS, Kill Team to Warcry, both feed into each other. Anyway, sorry for this big block of text, liked and subbed, I enjoy these vids! Let's hope you're just one of the first of a growing community of Warcry Centric content creators. Do you plan to do Battle Reports in the future?
This is all great stuff, and makes sense. Your new player experience is exactly what I expected would be the case, but I’m glad you pushed through because Warcry is excellent. Super tight system that’s a lot of fun to play. Also, those Karanak models? Beautiful. Totally agree. Thanks for supporting the channel. I would love to make battle reports, but it’s rather intimidating truth be told. When you look at other channels and their huge studios and multi-camera setups and crew…I fear mine would pale in comparison haha. I might give it a whirl though. If anything, it would be a fun experiment!
Just found your channel and am just getting into Warcry, and I feel this, was really difficult figuring out what to pick up even coming from other GW games. Looking forward to looking through your other content. Cheers.
I have wanted to get into warcry since it came out but I dithered and in that time there have been more starter sets than I can even remember, so buying into the game now feels like trying to jump onto a treadmill going full speed.
The crazy thing is, none of those sets were considered starter sets by GW, just limited time boxes. We have a starter set now, but frankly, I’m not a big fan of it. I don’t think it delivers on what Warcry is trying to do.
No. You are absolutely right. I am currently trying my hardest to start and invest into Warcry as I am very excited about the game. Howerever there are unbelievable hurdles along the way. Somehow Games Workshop has failed with value proposition and to offer me a single interesting point of entry. Everything is full of shady business practices and mismanagement of their productline. I find myself longing to Warcry season one, which seems superiour to what is currently being offered. As addition basic products that would sell like crazy such as battle cards are just plain absent. It's hard to understand why GW is so out of touch and can't seem to recognise effects of customer value for their business.
Since this video, a starter set has come out, I just don’t think this starter set is very good. It’s just rehashed Underworlds stuff with flat terrain(totally ignoring the verticals of Warcry). THAT BEING SAID, in November, Warcry got A LOT of content. I am talking about 8 new factions and something like 8 new ally mini factions (Bladeborn)
It would have been Idoneth Deepkin, but for some reason, those shark-riding elves aren’t in Warcry! They have a leader that rides a big seahorse unicorn though. Sadly the faction kinda sucks :/
Ive got everything, and theres just too many books. If they sold a $60 hardback with all the lore, stats, rules and quests combined I think it'd go a long way for accessibility.
Well , I play Kill Team and Titanicus , and am looking at Warcry , if any of the box sets do not contain full rules and everything you need to start , then this is dead in the water. All GW games are expensive , and in the current financial reality , people will not be buying a set with 2 teams and scenery , no dice , tokens or full rules. I certainly won't. A proper starter set is a MUST for any GW games. A great shame , as the models for Warcry are very good , but, given the extra costs to get started , it is a hard pass from me. Very good and objective vid , well done.
"Overcompensating electric demi-gods"..... thanks for making me laugh so hard I scared the wife 😀 I think the easiest and cheapest way to start Warcry is buying the rulebook and the Age of Sigmar Warrior starter as that gives you dice, a paper mat, a bit of terrain and 2 1000-ish points warbands. Granted you don't have the mission cards etc but you can pick them from the back of the rulebook or buy the 1st edition ones online for cheap if you're lucky as they still seem very usable. You can then proceed from here on 😉
Glad I got a chuckle! Yeah, that seems like a solid entry point. It’s just a shame you can’t just buy a set directly from the Warcry page and have to go to an adjacent game to find something viable!
@@wargamesontoast Yeah, it's a crying shame, but then again: buy an AoS starter and you're set to step into the bigger game at the same time. To be honest it's how we started 1st edition a few years ago after the initial starter sold out long before: redundant Underworld models + a few cheap Stormcast sets and a handfull of issues from the Mortal Realms magazine giving me more models and terrain for cheap. We had some good fun playing with what we had. I think GW at least need to release a generic card pack (missions, set up, twists and terrain) to attract newer players or to use at tournaments. And give us 'Grey Beards' an easy afternoon game while they're at it 😀
Have you seen the spoilers? There seems to be a starter set on the way with two underworld warbands (Stormcast vs. Vampire) and a few ruins and fences. Maybe GW looked at the issue of a missing starter set and figured something out ;-) Like you. =) I personally love that all rules are online and sorted by factions. But I see your point that having cards for your fighters "feels" much better than looking into a pdf. In my opinion Warcry was invented as an alternative for AoS player to have smaller games for fun. Especially the first season of Warcry had a lot of "fun" in it. What I mean are non symmetrical games. Not only in terrain and set-up, but also multiplayer games, having an attacker and a defender with distinct perks or the whole concept of twists! Underworlds on the other hand had a more competitive approach with specific models, cards and more board gaming than tabletop. So, I think Underworlds and WarCry do not compete even if they play inside the same narrative of AoS.
I have been avoiding Adepticon spoilers, although, the 10th edition 40k rumour is inescapable! If there is a new set coming for Warcry that would be amazing. I agree that Underworld and Warcry don’t compete once you understand both Warcry and Underworld. But to a complete novice they are both similar enough at a glance, but one has a clear entry path and one doesn’t. Not yet at least. Fingers crossed!
Seeing the leaks it seems that GW is gonna release a starter set thats very easy to get into. I just hope that GW doesnt drop the ball here with pricing it too high for a starter set. And they need to release it soon. I am dying to get my hands on it
Don't get me wrong I could afford full GW prices, but having limited time to play and no decent entry boxset turns me away from Warcry, although I admit is the best game out there right now. I'm sticking to One Page Rules skirmish games and ol' 3d printing. I wouldn't mind paying $300 if I could get full warbands, full terrains and full accessories in one single purchase, specially if you consider taxes, shipping and everything you have to pay for individual stuff. GW feels is managed by clowns sometimes, or there are just simply too many people throwing money at them and they lost interest on being the best.
The current situation trigger to buy AoS army boxes, so bigger box is better to prepare a warcry warband with many options. I doubt this is a healty way for warcry itself, but for selling AoS boxes. Also warcry change its way from chaos to other factions. The range is bigger (maybe not selling rate for GW), but it has lost its chaose dark charm. Also Gnarrwood is boring and GW should change finally the theme.
My group of friends is considering Warcry (AoS is too much of an investment, takes too long to play, and involves too many models). The lack of a starter box is a big problem, but another is that if you don't want one of the few custom teams, you have to buy whole boxes of a unit just to get one or two models. The secondhand market for 40k is much larger than AoS (at least in the US) so individual models are easier to acquire.
Yes you did. Sorry, I meant to say that I agreed with you and ALL of your points, though the ones I mentioned are the biggest impediments for us. The mention of Underworlds was interesting. We had not considered that game.
I just got heart of ghur. I prefer fantasy over sci fi and initially looked at warcry but chose kill team instead because of the lack of a starter set without looking on ebay. The fomo and inability to actually get any kill team sets except the starter has completely killed my interest in it so i looked to war cry again. The other things that put me off initially were the fact that it seems at 1st glance to only be variations of human chaos warbands and im more interested in other factions, i also found the ghur terrain to be a little offputting, especially the weird trees, though i like it more over time. I have a 6 year old child who is intrigued abd war cry seems the best warhammer game to try with kids. He needs a warband that looks like good guys though, not evil looking chaos guys. Im thinking of getting the nightmare quest but i dont like the ghouls and my kid definitely will hate the ghouls. The stormcasts are 100% to his taste though. I hope they do some bespoke teams for other factions like orks, elves etc to make it easier to just pick up a warband rather than trying to work out what works for a warband from aos boxes.
The chaotic focus/dudes in armour aesthetic can be a bit off putting. They seem to be fixing it though with newer releases. Hunters Of Huanchi are very cool looking and not nasty looking. They are difficult to win with though!
Man i loove warcry. I guess its one of the best games from gw out there rn. Its simple, quick, and really fun. There are no complex rules and anyone can understand how everything works. Yet, rn i think the main issue with warcry its the overprized warbands... like.. man 50 euros dmfor 12 minis?? Just not worth it. Also, i think gw should produce "warcry type aos" mini boxes. I wanted to star a ironjawz warband, and god... if i wanted to get just 1 gore grunta... i hat to spent full prize for 3 of them... or buy the start collecting wich is 70 bucks...
Warcry is excellent. It’s my go-to quick-playing game. There does need to be better options when it’s comes to buying AOS stuff for Warcry though. I was in the same boat with Bullgor - I really don’t need 3, yet GW only sell them that way
Not sure I agree with the assessment. Its not ideal for a company to sell out all it’s stock quickly. That just shows you have lost out of potential sales if you do. Just like an airline company ideally have one seat left at departure.
Limited time release boxes intended to sell out, that don’t sell out, raise eyebrows. Age of Sigmar’s Dominion box didn’t sell anywhere near as fast as Indomitus. It’s not an indicator of quality, merely an indicator of perceived interest from GW compared to actual interest from the consumer
I can say that a year ago or so I started to watch painting videos, and tabletop games. So I bought everything for painting. which is a lot in itself. And than I bought some lizardmen skinks just for practice and I love the faction. about half a year ago I encountered warcry and I fell in love watching videos only. So here I go. starter set, no where. every other set comes without tons of stuff. So I was forced to buy heart of ghur one for 190€ on amazon. I just bought sundered fate a month ago. And weird thing to me is, first: Why are there no tokens and dice pack on gw site. and second, why is the terrain almost the same for season 2. Look at season 1 terrain, so different and nice, I want those boxes. But ohh well out of production. So now we have all same looking terrain. Idk I just don't like that. And this 2 last boxes have sooo much less stuff in it for like 20€ less than heart of ghur. Just not worth 145€ imo. I'm really thinking if I should buy this latest one, probably will cuz I'm big collector
That’s the rub right there - the boxes GW sell for their Fantasy Skirmish Game has no was to enter smoothly. Starter sets, tokens, dice, and books are either not there or spread far and wide. It’s a real shame because Warcry is excellent - but how do you start when there’s so many hurdles.
@@wargamesontoast yes I agree it's hard. But you still can. The thing is people that do not fall in love with it, will just skip and move to other games. So probably new player growth is minimal
I whish I was able to buy single minis..like I rlly want one direwolve for example..but cant get it anywhere cuz age of sigmar players are forced to run them in 10s
Scouring second hand mini auctions is basically the only way to get around this, and even then, it's not exactly reliable. I wanted 2 Chaos Warhounds for my Beasts Of Chaos - I just bit the bullet and bought a full box. Feels very wasteful though, ngl
@lberghaus oh totally. My go-to army for 40K is orks though…so I will admit I have a crazy bias. My armies tend to be faaaaaar larger than my warbands haha
Bonkers.
@Wargames On Toast feels a bit like one hand that's not paying attention to what the other is doing. It's odd
@@UnkleKlumsy1353 I hope Warcry is doing fine and will continue to be supported. They have to fill this starter gap though.
That’s totally fair. I missed out in Warcry until near 2nd Edition, so I didn’t get to experience that first set sadly
it also had 12 Chaotic beasts in the box with cards for both players to use them. that original set was fantastic and really worth the price.
My first warband is the Hunter of Huanchi, damn...
Hey, don’t take my comments as a super negative. I LOVE the Hunters, they just play uniquely and that can be hard to grasp if you go in guns blazing.
Always go with what you like over what some mook on the internet says!
That just means it will be easier to learn every other faction
Here's what I'd recommend for Warcry:
That’s an awesome idea, thanks! Welcome to the hobby, and I’m glad my videos help!
Thanks for watching. This comment made my day, and I hope you enjoy your Warcry journey - it’s a fantastic game!
Believe it or not, that set was announced a week or 2 after this video XD
@@wargamesontoast THey were like:
- Dices.. yes yes..
- Terrain.. yes yes..
- 2 warbands, small but two...
- Kinda cheap? yes yes...
- Tokens, yep yep..
- Board-- yep..
- Rule book? hmm- yep
They basically got everything.
Thankfully they’ve announced a new starter set for later this year. It’s only a year late to the party!
I just atarted Warcry. Managed to find a brand new Catacombs set from a reputable tabletop games shop. It arrived yesterday and I'm fully concentrating on 1.0 for now until Im familiar with it.
Great content too, subscribed.
Warcry 2.0 didn’t change THAT much from 1.0 thankfully :)
i just got started with warcry and i love it, it does everything right what i dislike with killteam and just in general it's such a straight forward and nice ruleset, def my fav gw game
i did wish they had like warcry starter box that's just 1 team with maybe a lil bit of trerrain so if you and another player have it, you have quite a battlefield, but also you have some cards than and maybe a lil rule panflet
also a remidner with the warcry boxes, dominion etc also didn't sell out, i think gw actuall knows how much demand there is and can meet the demand peeps ask for ^^
i don't think compendium is a problem if you just buyt models you like but i started with kruleboyz from dominion :p
i do wish they brought pack those terrain packs i was never able to buy, they even had layout cads q.q
Underworlds isn't good value anymore. 50 for 4 models and 60 cards silly. 25-30 for a rivals deck is laughable.
Glad to find a like minded Warcry lover!
I’m now 40k and Kill Team guy but it was War Cry that caught my eye and open my eyes to the hobby
It’s an excellent gateway into the wider hobby :)
@@wargamesontoast I wanted to delve into warcry at first but it was as you say. Hard for newbies.
If Fantasy is your thing, then Slaves to Darkness, Cities Of Sigmar, Sylvaneth, or beasts of chaos could be up your alley.
Came into warcry through catacombs and it’s been brilliant set to get started. I haven’t felt the need to go into ghur yet as it just doesn’t appeal. I’m really hoping the next season will see a new starter and new location.
I am very eager to leave ghur and go somewhere new. One more set to go, hopefully Slaanesh themed in Ghur, then off on our adventures.
I'm still having fun with it but a few issues:
-The majority of factions are just humans in cosplay (I always pick something that isn't humans because I play fantasy games to experience fantasy).
I really hope they do. Would be healthy for the game and the new-player experience. Thanks for watching, man!
@@adamjames8419 any time friend. The sculpts are amazing, and they are lovely on the battlefield
All excellent points!
@@wargamesontoast thanks! Got super lucky finding the box, so excited to try it out
@@HappyDuude it’s a great set and it’s a crime that GW stopped selling it.
The trick is to be a bad painter hahaha
As a die-hard Kill Team player, I have to agree with the, "learning curve," to get into Warcry, even when overall it's a more steamlined game! I want to get into it, but unfortunately my community does 40K, so Kill Team is my go-to for skirmish. With any luck, Warhammer 10th Edition and Sigmar 4th will learn from their skirmish companions and become a better game. Awesome content mate, look forward to more, cheers,
I am really REALLY hoping 40K gets good in 10th. I can’t stand 9th haha
I'm just getting into Warcry. Love the S1 starter set but was too late to get it. Found a good deal on Catacombs to get me started with war bands, tokens, dice, boards and some original terrain.
That’s an excellent start. It’s a shame it is no longer sold!
@@brucemcbride3308 Monster Hunts sound like a lot of fun!
I just tried to buy a started set for warcry and the guy in my LHS sold me the a set without the core rules! They were so embarrassed - I swapped it for other stuff and still can’t can’t play warcry!!

Cheers.
Welcome to the toaster, friend!
You had me at shark-riding elves. Now what war band is that?
It would have been Idoneth Deepkin, but for some reason, those shark-riding elves aren’t in Warcry! They have a leader that rides a big seahorse unicorn though.
Sadly the faction kinda sucks :/
Ive got everything, and theres just too many books. If they sold a $60 hardback with all the lore, stats, rules and quests combined I think it'd go a long way for accessibility.
You can get the core rules from GW for free thankfully!
Hopefully the announced starter set will be good, because the last few sets have been underwhelming for new players!
"Overcompensating electric demi-gods"..... thanks for making me laugh so hard I scared the wife 😀
I think the easiest and cheapest way to start Warcry is buying the rulebook and the Age of Sigmar Warrior starter as that gives you dice, a paper mat, a bit of terrain and 2 1000-ish points warbands.
And give us 'Grey Beards' an easy afternoon game while they're at it 😀
Im excited for warcry. And love videos even as criticism to keep it in the light
It’s an EXCELLENT game, and I’m stoked now there is a starter set releasing shortly
I bought a box of sundered fate yesterday from a GW shop lol
I knew they would still be in stock somewhere! Haha
Have you seen the spoilers?
There seems to be a starter set on the way with two underworld warbands (Stormcast vs. Vampire) and a few ruins and fences. Maybe GW looked at the issue of a missing starter set and figured something out ;-) Like you. =)
I personally love that all rules are online and sorted by factions.
I am dying to get my hands on it
Fingers crossed!
No reason why you can’t play warcry on whatever board or theme you want. Don’t like flesh trees? No bother!
This! I very briefly mentioned it in the video, but this is a huge kick in the teeth for the AOS Compendium Factions.
Yes you did. Sorry, I meant to say that I agreed with you and ALL of your points, though the ones I mentioned are the biggest impediments for us. The mention of Underworlds was interesting. We had not considered that game.
Great vid, agree on all counts. Keep up the great work!
Thanks mate!

Why have Underworlds in the thumbnail if this is about warcry?
Because I discuss underworlds in the video as a talking point
GW products confuse me so much that I just avoid them altogether and play other war games.
That’s fair
I whish I was able to buy single minis..like I rlly want one direwolve for example..but cant get it anywhere cuz age of sigmar players are forced to run them in 10s
Scouring second hand mini auctions is basically the only way to get around this, and even then, it's not exactly reliable. I wanted 2 Chaos Warhounds for my Beasts Of Chaos - I just bit the bullet and bought a full box. Feels very wasteful though, ngl
Good point
If a Warcry warband takes you an evening to paint, a 40K army shouldn’t take you a year. more like 2 weeks to a month at most.
Not when the drive to complete a massive project diminishes exponentially
@@wargamesontoast true, i was just comparing number of models.
@lberghaus oh totally. My go-to army for 40K is orks though…so I will admit I have a crazy bias. My armies tend to be faaaaaar larger than my warbands haha
Warcry is hard to start? Ever tried to start 40k?
It’s easy to start the most popular wargame on the planet with endless ways to enter the hobby, what are you on about XD
