There is nothing wrong with putting a game 'on the shelf' for awhile. You might come back to it, you might not. As you basically said, the key is to follow where the fun is leading you.
Donny, just want to say thanks for the incredible videos over the years! Many of us aren't here for the battle reports, the mini painting, or the terrain building- we're here because you're awesome and inspiring. No matter what you choose to pursue, you'll have us along for the ride!
Thanks for this! I have to say this, if it wasn't for your entertaining videos, I wouldn't have picked up Warcry actually, hahah! But ya, I truly understand, chasing after the latest stuff can get tiring at times. Keep up the great videos you do and have fun in life!
Word. The GW churn is unreal (I picked up some of those faction guides, by the time I sat down to play them a new edition was out). I wonder if the skirmish-scale (where you're collecting smaller, isolated warbands rather than a single army / faction) makes that churn harder -- like when a bunch of new space marines come out, if you play orks it's whatevs. But if you're playing small scale, every release is a potential pick-up (tho I'll say I've found the more recent warcry warbands have done nothing for me).
This comment should have more likes. I got really into Kill Team when the new edition dropped. Picking up almost every new box set until the ones following the move to the space hulks, because at that point GW was releasing them so fast and they were so expensive and hard to get I just could keep up.
@Miniaturegeek when I first started buying GW (fantasy battles 1986 then 40k 1987). you didn't have the fomo or meta chasing. In the U.S., also didn't have access to the products like we have today. over the years, I realized that the IGYG format is really bad. I also watch GW evolve into a 'tournament play only' game system. literally, all of the games produced encourage this level of head-to-head play. there aren't any quality campaign rules or casual play. I still collect some of the models, but I'll never play the games.
@@MiniaturegeekI mean, isn’t the issue you getting all those kill teams you couldn’t afford? If you already have a team or a selection you don’t need every team that comes out. Or am I misunderstanding you?
@@jameshill8493 the kill team box sets came with exclusive terrain pieces that they never released separately. Some of which had actual in game mechanics.
Love watching your videos, really like the use of the carousel to move everything around, makes for very compelling video. I burned out on GW years ago, I think their plan is exactly to churn through customers as quickly as they can. Keep us the great videos on whatever the hell you want. One thing I would like to see though is someone play out a scenario with different rule sets to see how the scenario would play out and the effect the rules have on them, just an idea.
Excellent video, I'm sure the churn resonates with a lot of us. I'm a big fan of warcry but not gone beyond catacombs ruleset as there's just too much to keep up with other games, hobbies and time I personally have. I tend to go back and forth between blood bowl and warcry with a ton of Necromunda stuff I want to finally use. Your advice is sound, do what makes you happy.
I love Warcry, but I have no one who wants to play it. I have bought most of the sets for the terrain and occasionally for the models. I like Frostgrave, 5 Leagues, and recently Deth Wizards, all Solo. I like One Page Rules and Fistful of Lead for head to head games, which sadly are rare.
Hey Mike! I have the same trouble now and again with getting a buddy or two to stick with some titles. I think trying out a few coop options may be my next step!
All your Warcry models and train looks amazing! Your Warcry battle reports were great too, and what got me watching your channel. Warcry is my favourite game but I can see why GW's punishing release schedules and the particular pressures of content creation burnt you out on the game. If you ever do feel like coming back to it could you maybe approach it in a narrative way similar to your Frostgrave videos? Both editions of Warcry have narrative campaign rules and following one warband through a quest would at least cut down the number of warbands you'd need to have available compared to a constant parade of novel warbands needed for multiple standalone matches!
I found you back in the day because of your Warcry reports -- it was so unique to find a solo player and your style was so different to every other player out there. I was sad when you stopped playing it and started doing more Frostgrave, to tell the truth. ...but now I'm in a similar place to you and I totally get it. I've even moved nore towards mini agnostic and esoteric games like Frostgrave, Deth Wizards and the like. It's more fun for me to play something with looser hobby rules than GW and craft my own narratives. GW's fomo and mini-spew is legit. Hobby fatigue is utterly real, so you have to do what makes you happy! Dropping a proper sub now to see where you go next! (Also check out 7TV by Crooked Dice sometime if you want something super weird and niche!)
Warcry is my favorite tabletop in the world. As a father I have very few time. 2 Hours a Week tops, if I get enough sleep. Having a game that fits that schedule is amazing! And with 3D-Printing there is no barrier anymore to the warband you want. If Games Workshop ever kills it, I might stop playing and collecting tabletop.
If you enjoy forbidden Psalm, I highly recommend Painflail and Painflail quest. It does a much better job at incorporating miniature rules into the Mork Borg system. Forbidden Psalm plays like its own game. Which is totally fine too!
@@DiceChatter oh, you ought to play Kill Sample Process if you ever want a whole new project, it's pretty much the same rules but cyberpunk style. You can even import your FP characters.
GW makes money from selling you things, not from you playing games, and thus has to keep releasing new thing to sell you. Trying to keep up with what the new thing as you have to as a youtuber, is probably endless mental (and financial) stress. I love you channel, because you seem to genuinely enjoy what you do. i feel a lot of creators in this hobby space are trapped in thr "chase GW" endless marathon and cant ever leave it, which shows in their videos. Which is understandable if youtube is their orimarybsource of income. Theres a few like yourself who seem to be in this for the absolute joy of the hobby, and rhats why I love this channel.
Really appreciate this. Nail on the head. When I first started making videos, I thought GW content was the answer. The route to some remote success or validation. I took a break from things for a while and really began to put things into perspective. For some, following the trend or hot new thing works. I'm sure at time in the future, a new game will tickle my fancy. But no matter what, you need to stick true to what you love and enjoy. Appreciate the comment and the kind words. 🥰
You were my inspiration to start Warcry aswell. I painted nearly all the terrain from the starter set and 4 complete warbands in a short amount of time. Actually went on playing about 6 games and came to the conclusion that it wasn't for me and my friends 😅 let's just say I learned my lesson (play first, paint everything second) 😂
After playing a lot of Kill Team with my buddies from my Pathfinder group we're finally taking the plunge into Frostgrave and these videos have been a help in that regard. I also really want to try Forbidden Psalm but that may end up being a solo thing at first.
Thanks for this! I started watching the channel because of Warcry! I did miss it when you went to Frostgrave, but that’s ok. As long as you’re happy tis all that matters! You are right though…. Warcry has become a lot to keep up with. I have no new edition stuff and I will continue to play the original. Still some Warbands I’m seeking out too, that are now hard to find! Thanks for all you do, whatever you do!
I've said it before and I will say it again.... man I love your painted minis! 👍💙 I can totally understand the sentiment with War Cry but it feels like you're way better off with Frostgrave or similar games (both old "dead" and non-GW)! Excellent video my friend! 👍🎂
I've been into Warhammer and offshoot games since 2nd edition 40k. I agree with you that the release schedule makes the games hard to keep up with. I enjoyed warcry as a fun hour long game and enjoyed the first run of kill team as a solo game, but it sometimes feels like a second job more than a hobby. They are fun games, but I do miss the stories and history you could create with mordenhiem and classic necromunda.
@@DiceChatter my group at the time played necromunda for a year with the same gangs. Maxed out alot of experience and stat lines. Mordenhiem was all about the characters. A Vampire chopping through a warband over 4 turns or a zombie becoming a hero with lads got talent.
I wanted to buy into Warcry, liked the models, liked the terrain, gave a sense of a more savage fantasy than what AoS was showcasing at the time. But aside from the sticker, shock of how expensive even a beginner set was, I realized that I would never touch the game proper, nobody else was interested in my area, and that ultimately I did not want to invest time and money into something that would ultimately end up as a pile of shame or in a box for a long period of time. If I ever find a box set in the wild, second hand and discounted, sure, I’ll grab it just to have the models for my own collection of plastic, but they’ll never get used for their intended purpose.
An unfortunate reality when it comes to games that are not at the tippy top of the wargaming hobby, 40K and the like. Though, the best way to get folks into a game is to put a foot forward and become a hobby advocate! Not an easy thing to achieve for everyone, but in time, you'll get some awesome games in that you may had never expected to!
Do what makes you happy. It's a hobby. Hobbies are meant to be fun and even challenging at times, but when they become a source of stress / frustration, it's time to take a step back. I really enjoyed ur warcry batreps, and I do miss them, but as long as u are getting what u need out of ur hobby and ur in a good place... more power to ya. Thank you for ur videos.
Nailed it. Play what makes you happy but be open to new titles and new experiences so you don’t miss out on something “outside” your regular gaming sphere.
Great insights! I never really thought about how content creation can multiply the amount of pressure that GW's release schedule creates. As a viewer it's all too easy to think "I want to see the new hotness in action" while forgetting the actual effort that goes behind the scenes.
It’s also an understandable perspective from the viewer as well! You are passionate or excited about something and you want to see others share that joy as well. It is what keeps the hobby growing and thriving. 😊
Nice peek behind the curtain - I really love that you begun on Frostgrave, opened my eyes for non-GW games. Warcry or Frostgrave, this channel is still the best batreps on youtube, so keep up the good work :)
Just want to suggest Sword Weirdos and Cauldron. Swords Weirdos is minis agnostic, customisable, and has a single player mode. Cauldron is something a different beastie. It's about building small warbands of orcs or goblins and having them fight in a swamp. It's in the style or Mork Borg/Forbidden Psalm, and you roll on tables to create the members of your warbands. Another good thing is that both games are $5 or less in pdf on Wargame Foundry.
Great video! Something I’d say is that you’ve taken a dnd approach to wargaming, world building, painting, and owning the equipment. GW markets towards wargamers, I’d encourage you to try traveling to an event and play some of your painted Warcry warbands, at least once! Don’t worry about winning or losing, it’s to meet people, play with other terrain, other rules, other warbands, the “explore” aspect of the game is quite huge
Great insight! You definitely touch on many things I have begun to love about the hobby, the concepts and ideas that really brought me into this space. Creating a unique setting and importing a tabletop game into that realm is a lovely experience.
While perfect is the highest mark there is, your stuff most definitely is top-notch! Not only the professional studio, audio and video quality, lighting, editing, excellently crafted and painted minis, but even more so the writing, humor, enthusiasm and passion for this hobby, just the overall vibe of the channel! Be proud of what you are accomplishing here! On the topic of the video: Move on, that's fine! You having fun in your projects and games is what drives this channel, don't stress yourself out! Plus I'd personally choose systems like Frostgrave over GW titels any day of the week. Not only because of the system, Warcry actually being a decent one for once, but due to the way GW is operating as a company. Have fun gaming and running this channel! Thanks!
Tharukan! Thank you my friend, for the comment and the support! You made my day buddy. It's one thing to be proud of one's self, but it is always nice to know you are doing something well that is noticed in the community. Thanks 🥰
All your videos are entertaining, man. Warcry V1 was a pretty perfect game, in my opinion. It came with everything you needed. It wasnt bogged down with a million factions or rules, it was just a bunch of different barbarians killing each other. It reminded me so much of Weaponlord for the SNES that i had to get it. I wouldnt mind seeing some kind of Warcry content with your custom terrain, but do whatever makes you enjoy mini war gaming and ill keep watching.
Interesting you mention the terrain. I would say the Warcry terrain aesthetically looks amazing, but it does lack a bit of gameplay depth. Something that I have been learning throughout my "hobby career" is I like games with interesting terrain and rulesets that fit with said terrain. Also, appreciate the comment and support. You bring a smile to my face 😊
@@CharlieFultonSC Mostly we just agree on points, like 750, pick most fun battleplan instead of generating it random. Agree on any deployment we like. And also play without some abilities, if I play with someone who's learning
I totally feel this. I started with D&D, but mostly just the role playing, not even the modeling side, and had always been interested in Warhammer, but the price point - and not having anyone to play with at the time - kept me from that. In the last couple of years, a friend got me a 40k combat patrol, and I was so excited about building and painting the models. And then we played a partial game and I just... couldn't really get into it. It's too much, too complicated (for me), and there's too many accessories and updates and rules changes, happening too fast, for me to keep up with. I still have models, and I love that that combat patrol helped me find my love for building, kitbashing, and painting, but I'm definitely much more interested in smaller, indie skirmish games now. By the way, I love seeing that you have Reign In Hell! That's one of my favorites! I would love to see you do some content for that game, should you have the time and interest!
I have enough and don't need more. The key is to be happy with a few warbands and 2 or 2 terrain kits and play that. No need to keep up with their schedule.
I totally agree that warhammer is a gateway to miniature gaming. After playing a lot of killteam I was able to get my friends into Frostgrave thanks to your channel. Showing my friends your battle reports really sold them on the game. There are tons of other skirmish games out there I’m gonna get my group into. Thanks for this video!
Honestly. Outside of Middle Earth, I actually have no interest in GW stuff because they charge so much for the books and the games get updated so much along with the overly complex rules. I like games like Joe McCulloughs because they are cheap, easy to learn and I can teach people fairly easily. I also don't feel like I get nickle and dimed along the way.
Whats interesting is that I've found that all the new releases for warcry aren't the "juice" of the game, but rather the "juice" is finding secondhand mocels to create new fun warbamds or put new spins on warbands I already have. But also, warcry can support a lot of different strokes for a lot of different folks. Glad you liked it! I hope whatever vhanges are made in the future might being you back to playing ❤
Good chat about dice, thanks. Come and try Warmachine and Warcrow! (I have no reason to think you'd like either of these games, they're just what I'm into)
I recently sold all of my GW stuff, aside from Blood bowl related stuff, simply due to the 'Keep up' with releases. Sometimes games just have too much stuff that go along with them. That's why I got into Battletech and Bolt Action. There's a cap on the amount of product you can buy so it's easier to enjoy the things you already have.
So I found your channel a few months ago because I started collecting Frostgrave and wanted to learn more about it. Your channel has been by far the best one to reference the game and get hooked on to minis and terrain. As a gamer I have played Warhammer fantasy long before age of Sigmar when it was all units and was still super expensive. I only played orcs because I couldn't afford to play other factions. I've played Necromunda, Flames of war, Mageknight, X-wing and some other in between games here and there. I hear ya when you say that the curve to try and keep up with a corporations like GW when they release stuff is insane, not to mention they frown upon proxy minis. This is why I must say that Frostgrave is the best system I have played so far. Everything about it is lenient. You don't have the minis? sub something in. You don't like the scenario? make something up or change it. You don't have a buddy to play with at the moment? play on your own. It seems like a game that wants you to have fun and not at the expense of your wallet and sanity. Only need 10 figures in your warband! Amazing! And the terrain can be anything really. I guess what I'm saying is you seem to have a lot of fun with Frostgrave and it shows in your battle reports. Karen and LLoyd are terrific as are the other characters you have created and the best part is it's from your imagination. Keep up the great work and enjoy your gaming.
Kevin, you are a wise man! I'm glad I could be of service in providing some content to peak at while discovering the joy in our hobby. I like to think we are always evolving and changing. What we enjoy most about the games we play transitions over the years, and finding that sweet spot is something we always hope to reach. And damn, it is a hell of a ride! Appreciate the comment my friend. 😁
Insightful, l moved from D&D to ad&d and the next 4 editions, to table top skirmish games. I like really like your statement “Do what makes you happy”👍
i really hope after a while you can play warcry again with the burden of stress etc, it would be amazing to see some warcry batreps again but even if they don't return the other batreps are still as amazing and fun to watch ^^ Maybe its just me, but i really don't care if peeps use the same teams or terrain etc as i understand it all takes time and i do like seeing people slowly expend their collection as it feels more grounded, it's why i love your terrain build vids, even if i can't make those yet etc, it's nice to see it slowly getting expended on what you need etc ^^ recently i got the luxary to try out hametsu and after just 1 game i got hooked and i think you owuld enjoy it as well with the more narative focuses batreps ^^ but i also think you might enjoy it and all you need is the core rule book ^^ i was a bit scared coming into this vid that it was gonna be a gw bad vid, but im happy that's not the case ^^ i really like gw alternative games that aren't other big ips like star wars or marval, but sometimes i feel the people focus to much play this cuz gw bad or its better than gw instead of look at this amazing game with a more posetive vibe, while i get gw is stepping on peeps toes, i think it's a product of just of how society is atm and it's just doing the same as other companies and just anything else and such is life, but maybe it's also just my mentallity to focus on the positive and just get models i think are cool and if i don't like something i have the luxary i have peeps around me that are fine with homebrew or i can just use them in other games and being able to have a good variation of games ^^ i really love your content whatever you make, and i hope you don't push yourself to much with the terrain and frostgrave stuff so it doesn't end up to much like what warcry has become for you ^^ (i also finally ordered some crafting dowels and stuff as i wanna try and make the barricades and than hopefully slowly expend so i can make the pillars etc as the terrain vids really inspire me)
Spookimi, thank you for the comment and the insight! Really appreciate you hanging around all these years. Also, happy to hear you are going to try and make some barricades! Start simple and work your way up, you go this! 😁
The thing many seem to forget is, that GW can't force us to constantly buy their stuff. There is no need to imeadiatly go and buy whatever releases next even though the community seems to feel that urge.
Marvel Crisis Protocol is a great game, and is easy to keep up with. They do regular updates... but it's like 10 characters a year. That's far fewer models to paint. Plus, there's a lot of overlap. Once you build an Avengers list, it's easy to build a Defenders list. Once you build an X-Men list, it's easy to build X-Force and/or Brotherhood list.
Damn i feel like you called me out, games workshop was my entrance into wargaming and warcry into skirmish gaming. I still love the models and scenery but now I'm a dad of two boys and can hardly keep up with the ever changing rules and expansions. I find myself enjoying quicker/faster set up games like one page rules and rangers of shadowdeep. I don't get much time to play wargames and my boys are too young to get involved, so I get my fix in where I can. That's why I really enjoy your narrative batreps, they really are unique and some of the better ones that I've seen here. Keep doing you, brother!
The GW treadmill is real and I get where you're coming from. The constant updates and release changes has put me off of a lot of GW stuff as I don't have a ton of free time and I hate having to relearn rules every time I have a chance to play. BTW your set up is amazing, do you think you'd ever do a video giving a walkthrough of it?
Yes, it is the relearning everything that can really turn me off of a title as well. And sure! I guess I didn’t think folks would be interested in my hobby/gaming set up. I’ll add it to the video idea list.
It's not a problem to step away from a game. I've stopped playing 40k and warcry as well. I mostly play Pathfinder/DnD anymore, and Frostgrave. Throw in a bit of AoS but it's hard to keep up with. I enjoy narrative gameplay, and Frostgrave seems to be it for me. It's easy, doesn't take forever, and scratches the tabletop itch.
Donny mate, I don't know how you do it, but each and every video you produce is a genuine delight. It feels like I'm listening to a friend, sat down with a pint in a pub, enjoying good... chatter, of the dice persuasion. And I fully respect you for making this little video - again, lovely to watch, you have such good vocal delivery, and you make a really fair point. I find myself agreeing on every point; I started as a GW loyalist because I was 10 when I started collecting. I may dip back into it for the odd skirmish, or for a spot of Mordheim. But honestly, these days, Frostgrave or D&D are my primary tabletop pursuits - so I still grab the occasional GW bit of swag, but that's either a nostalgia trip (like getting Lion El'Johnson), or else I want to portray something on the battlefield (remind me to tell you about the plans I have for reskinning "Storm King's Thunder" to be set in Pictish Scotland and needing tonnes of ogres and goblins to be the foot soldiers in a redesigned conflict at Golden Acre). Anyway, what I'm trying to say, is that I think the reason I like your stuff so much is because you live be your principle; happy gaming. And that ultimately is the most appealing factor of your channel; watching a man enjoy his hobby, and share it with a ready audience.
Robbie! Hey my friend! Good to hear from you and it has been a pleasure reading your comment. You are too kind and I’m happy to have you along for this wild ride. I hope I can continue to inspire for many years to come! Thanks buddy 🥰
I love Warcry. While I understand that you as a content creator could get buried under the churn of new releases I don't understand that mentality for regular players. One of the reasons I like Warcry so much is that you don't have to keep up with the bespoke warbands that they put out. Unlike Kill Team the "free" factions are often more powerful than the bespoke teams, and there are an extraordinary amount of viable, fun options. I started with the Heart of Ghur box so that I'd have the core rules and a full set of terrain and have picked up or put together warbands here and there, but even if I never bought another product I'd still have a game that will last me for years to come. The one thing I do find interesting is how much of the tabletop wargaming community complains about the GW "churn" while simultaneously stating that a game is "dead" if it doesn't have a blistering release schedule.
Appreciate the insight! I do understand I am in an unusual situation. Definitely not the average gamer and hobbyist. Unfortunately, life can be very polarizing, and we all have varying opinions and thoughts. I am happy to hear things from your point of view. 😀
@@DiceChatter Well here's an opinion for you: I really enjoy your channel, even if you aren't going to keep making Warcry vids, so keep up the good work!
I still really enjoy Warcry but I am not a content creator trying to keep with the constant churn that is a GW game. I have been in this hobby for quite a while. I realized a long time ago that I need to pick and choose what I think looks cool and skip the rest because no matter what is going on with my life or work GW is going to keep cranking out minis and books.
I found myself in this spiral. I have since moved on to Five Leagues from the Borderlands and Five Parsecs from Home and more. I've even been able to film a few solo battle reports for them, I need better lighting though. I don't regret moving away from GW. Besides, all of those random GW models I thought were cool now serve a better purpose than for a game no one around me plays. lol
"Keeping up" is 100% the reason I dont really play 40k or AoS anymore. Battletech and the Middle Earth SBG are stable systems that are largely unchanged, and certainly dont suffer from the same level of release mayhem that GWs other titles do. Glad you're taking the approach that keeps you making content. I started watching your channel for Warcry back in 2019 or 2020. But, while I dont play Frostgrave myself, I nonetheless love your content. Terrain builds always give me ideas for how to improve my own builds, and the Frostgrave batreps always provide entertainment for the goofy characters, and their associated sound effects. Happy Gaming! Keep on doing you!
I miss your Warcry barrels, but I get it. Keeping up with it can definitely hard; I certainly know from pulling together a big narrative campaign set in the current season for my friends at my LGS the past few months. I can only imagine how much harder it is when you feel compelled to get every single set that comes out for the sake of content. Anyway, Warcry is great and I have been having a lot of fun pulling new people into the Narrative side of it, but I also recognize it would be a shame if people never went deeper and got to see the other, more immersive and finely tuned skirmish systems out there that have clever, engaging mechanics in their own right. Explore and do what makes you happy.
Thanks, Phalanx! Appreciate your insight. I think the exploration and experimentation of all these tabletop games is a very exciting aspect of this hobby. Always willing to peak at interesting titles.
@@DiceChatter Yea, right now I am looking to pick up some Deth Wizards from Snarling Badger and give that a try since the theme and game style is right up my alley. I highly recommend it.
Warcry is fun but as with all GW games the rules and pace of updates is just silly. Many glorious models and some nice terrain too though. The original lowlife chaos "wannabees" I LOVED. Not as interested in playing demi-gods or hero/villian of the universe. The mats and scenario/terrain layout builder cards are good too. Use the cool models & terrain with functional rules like.. Frostgrave :)
To further your statement, I feel I can be a bit more “creative” with titles like Frostgrave. The universe of the game is not so set in stone where with some GW titles, going down a different or unusual path can feel incorrect. Appreciate the comment!
I get you. To me, GW is all about the promise and the prospect of great games ahead, if you have the 'right' minis. Frostgrave is all about great games because you already have the right minis.
Hello! I understand your point at 100%. The topic is simple, it is impossible to keep up with any GW content if you are not 100% focused on it. The schedule is crazy and the rule-bloating amazing. It happened to me in December 2022 and I left the podcast and any GW game. Since then, I have played many miniature games with more interaction and speed than GW ones, as 5 Leagues from the Borderlan, 5 Parsecs from Home, Stargrave, D100 Space and Ironsworn. I also have a channel that I keep on videos for fun as I like to record the games and tell the stories about it (in Spanish). And I decided from moment 1 that it would not include any GW... So feel your pain bro!😉😉
I moved from MtG to 40k back in 2000, switched to Mage Knight because it was cheaper and more manageable (as much as I enjoyed scratch building my little Ork vehicles). Quit wargaming altogether to play the YuGiOh TCG, before going fully into DnD for a few years. Completely missed out on Heroscape in the process. I did get all three MtG: Arena of the Planeswalkers sets (mostly for the minis for DnD but I did briefly enjoy the game). Right now my hobby money goes to DnD and Frostgrave (more DnD than FG due to lack of local players). My point is, I get how hard it is to find something you enjoy, and how sometimes you just need a change. And hey, it's not like you can't use that old Warcry stuff to play FG with. Goodness knows everything I've crafted for FG gets used for DnD at somepoint (and vice-versa).
I can only eco what you're saying about GW realeade schedule's. The only game I'm still somewhat keeping up with is necromunda. +1 for forbidden psalm and rangers of shadow deep. Would love to see a battle report on either of those! 🎉
@DiceChatter Rangers of Shadow Deep has a storytelling aspect to it that I think would work great with your way to making videos! But whichever strikes your fancy:)
I own the Rangers book! Looked through it the other day actually! And for AoS, it could be interesting to try out. Though, they "deleted" my Beasts of Chaos... 🙃
Games Workshop games are jealous of your time, money, and attention. A GW game isn't a game you add to your collection, to play when you feel like it or have the time. They're second jobs, that you must keep up with. And for something that's meant to be fun, that just sounds exhausting.
"I rarely game in stores" I feel like it can be more fun to do it in a store, especially as a crafter. Sure hauling stuff sucks shit but the community of other crafters to network with is fantastic. The biggest downside is sharing breathing air with MTG players who are less-than-people
Actually funny you mention this! A nerd store (that's what I like to call them) recently opened up not too far from me, and I've been debating on whether to get the terrain together and get some more folks into the hobby. Good thinking!
@@DiceChatter As someone with a resin 3d printer who likes to make terrain, being able to trade resin minis for terrain with a dude with a fdm printer is amazing.
As a person who plays both MTG and gamesworkshop games this is an interesting take for me. I will play mtg at the store for higher levels of play I think it gets better, while I don't like tabletop games in store because competitive tabletop games get worse than casual ones. (My favorite part of tabletop tournaments is getting into the loser bracket and finally getting into some fun games.)
@@nichodemus10 have you considered that you need not play competitive at a store? Wargames need not (and honestly should not) be only competitive. I don't play 40k but I know full well if thier is money on the line and being WAAC is not only permited but encouraged then its player base won't be much better than magic players.
@drewbakka5265 I have tried it, but not competitive means different things to different people. One of my early experiences was bringing a pretty casual list and finding a player who then tailored his list to exactly murder my swarm nids (back in 4th or 5th). The other is bringing a pretty casual list and running into some who was pretty chill but playing an optimized list so that the game couldn't be close even though he was not doing anything wrong. All of my non tourney store play was 6th edition or earlier when I think the game was not as well designed for it as it is now, but my free time has become more precious with age so I don't expect to go back. Though if I had the time and my small circle was unavailable maybe...
Warcry is the best ruleset that GW has produced (admittedly that’s not saying much!). I really enjoy the game and enjoyed your Warcry bat reps. Shame you won’t be making anymore. But as you say, do what makes you happy.
This is why bloodbowl is gw best and most popular game when have tournaments 2400 coaches at tournaments also releases every six or eight months the price point is the best
Nothing Burger. No offense. But I’m a busy single Dad. Barely have time to game. Never try to keep up with ALL that GW pushes out now. Just have fun with buddies like you said in the video. And do what makes you happy. We are spoiled for choice on table top games these days. And miniatures and rules don’t combust. Unless you have survived a house fire. Which I wouldn’t recommend. Peace and love. Find what moves you
If you feel that moving toward other games helps you to enjoy the hard work you put in the channel more, go for it! A stressful hobby kinda of misses the point of hobbying. Also, it seems that Frostgrave gave you more freedom to explore and tweak the rules, like for example the three faction finale of your frostgrave campaign. I mean, nothing prevent rule experimentation in warcry, but I have the feel that it's easier with less structured and lore dense games.
Good point David, 100% agree with you! Also, and this is no fault to GW or its many titles, but there are certain expectations people have grown to expect when their games are presented in a video. Rules must be perfect, need to use GW models, and so on. Of course, this is just my little humble opinion and my experience making a few videos. Appreciate the comment and the support as always 🥰
@@DiceChatter yes, agree, expectations also play an important role here. And to be fair, it's okay for people to have that kind of expectations if that's what they like. However, since it all boils down to personal choice, it's also okay to choose to create contents which will likely appeal to a specific target audiences more than anothers. Your video today explains your rationale behind that, and it makes clear that you want your follower to be well awafe of your choice. That is nice to see.
The thing I like about my wargames is being able to play them with a bunch of other people. Which is why I play 40k even though I'd really probably rather be playing something like Reign in Hell. 40k isn't the better game, but it is what people around me are playing, which makes it the better game for me to play.
In a way, it is a social contract. Do you want to be able to get games in on a weekly basis? Play popular titles. Also, Reign in Hell... Looking forward to getting that one on the channel 😈
I don't see it like you, I find warcy one of the cheapest games to get into. Of course if you always want the newest warband it gets expensive. But I can play the game with the one band I bought ages ago. The core rules are free online as are the warband rules. And if there is a new warband I really like its not that expensive to get a single box.
I think Mordheim might be up your alley. There's nothing more no-pressure than a game been discontinued for close to 20 years. No Joneses to keep up with. The community of people who keep that game alive love it for the setting, atmosphere, and its ability to create emergent narratives, and now that it's no longer officially supported, there's a vast space for creativity in the models and terrain they can use.
I was never a big fan of big war games since i love painting minis and having an army to paint takes the fun away. For that i will always love warcry. But never force a game if you arent having fun
Amen man. This was me but for kill team. It kept me sain through the pandemic. But then they switched it up and I didn't like the changes not to mention locking new factions behind $140+ boxes. I tried other stuff and you're right non GW games are so much better! I still collect gw but I play MonPoc and Marvel more then anything.
There is nothing wrong with putting a game 'on the shelf' for awhile. You might come back to it, you might not. As you basically said, the key is to follow where the fun is leading you.
Totally agree! Appreciate the insight! 😃
Your Warcry reports were great and are what actually brought me to your channel. Good luck on your other games, Frostgrave is pretty cool too :)
Appreciate you hanging around! Glad you enjoy some FG as well!
Donny, just want to say thanks for the incredible videos over the years! Many of us aren't here for the battle reports, the mini painting, or the terrain building- we're here because you're awesome and inspiring. No matter what you choose to pursue, you'll have us along for the ride!
You just made my day! Thanks a hell of a lot Anton! I'm just happy to be of service. 😁
GW really did a heelspin from modest to little support, to overwhelming fomo levels of support.
For what?
Certainly not creators.
Thanks for this!
I have to say this, if it wasn't for your entertaining videos, I wouldn't have picked up Warcry actually, hahah!
But ya, I truly understand, chasing after the latest stuff can get tiring at times.
Keep up the great videos you do and have fun in life!
And thank you! Kind folks like yourself keep the channel moving and hopefully improving!
Ahhh yes, I like the phrase “GW churn.” Thank you for sharing 😃
Frostgrave is what brought me to your channel and I'm loving the content you're making. I'm looking forward to the next battle report!
Working on a bat rep as we speak! 🧙♂️
@@DiceChatter Can't wait!
Shame to hear it! My group and I are absolutely loving Warcry.
GW is the reason I don't play GW games.
@@Miniaturegeek yeah but you don’t need those, at that point that seems very extra
Just play Frostgrave or Stargrave. It's just that simple. Thanks for the share!!
I feel you on that release schedule. Even with infinite money I could only keep up if I played nothing else.
Thank you for the insight, warswithtoys! Glad you enjoy the content, and we shall see what I can do!
Appreciate your insight! Necromunda is another title that has always caught my eye. Great narrative opportunities. Maybe one day…
@@DiceChatter it's always the 'one day' mentality. Having kids, I hope 'one day' to get playing some of the games I've neglected 🤣
I only found you recently but you are a bright light in a direction of wargaming im happy to see coming.
Keep it up man!
Thank you! Very kind of you to say this 🥰
I love Warcry, but I have no one who wants to play it.
I have no problem getting people to play Shadows of Brimstone, which is also love, but for some, that’s all they want to play
Some good thoughts here! I appreciate the insight and maybe I can think about changing around formats of videos/content.
Hey Tim! Appreciate the comment my friend. Nice to hear your story as well and I’m glad you have found quality titles for your table. 🤓
Yeah same, I got a box and felt left behind by the game as soon as I got it.
They are still really good models to be used for other things though.
Agree! And yes, still plan on using the models for all these mini agnostic games!
Absolutely understandable points made here. Keep doing what you love!
Thank you, Michael! Always happy to hear from you!
Forbidden Pslam will scratch the itch, thank me later
If you enjoy forbidden Psalm, I highly recommend Painflail and Painflail quest. It does a much better job at incorporating miniature rules into the Mork Borg system. Forbidden Psalm plays like its own game. Which is totally fine too!
Actually have played FP! Wonderful game! ☠️
@@DiceChatter oh, you ought to play Kill Sample Process if you ever want a whole new project, it's pretty much the same rules but cyberpunk style. You can even import your FP characters.
I initially came for the war cry, I stayed for the Donny! Keep doing what makes you happy because I know I enjoy your content ❤
Well, shucks 🥰 Thank you, Fwah! Happy to have you!
That is a good lesson to follow. I should start doing that myself…
After playing a lot of Kill Team with my buddies from my Pathfinder group we're finally taking the plunge into Frostgrave and these videos have been a help in that regard. I also really want to try Forbidden Psalm but that may end up being a solo thing at first.
FP is a good one. I’d say, a bit easier to grasp than Frostgrave. Which is great for beginners in the hobby.
Anyone know the song at 2:00 ?
30000 steps to Geneva - Coma Svensson
Thanks for this! I started watching the channel because of Warcry! I did miss it when you went to Frostgrave, but that’s ok. As long as you’re happy tis all that matters! You are right though…. Warcry has become a lot to keep up with. I have no new edition stuff and I will continue to play the original. Still some Warbands I’m seeking out too, that are now hard to find! Thanks for all you do, whatever you do!
Hey Tom! Good to hear from an old friend. 🥰
I've said it before and I will say it again.... man I love your painted minis! 👍💙 I can totally understand the sentiment with War Cry but it feels like you're way better off with Frostgrave or similar games (both old "dead" and non-GW)! Excellent video my friend! 👍🎂
Leif, from the bottom of my little cold heart, thank you my friend. 🧙♂️😍
Lots of folks have mentioned the classics. Something I have been tempted to poke my noggin into. 🤓
Appreciate the comment Jamie! Hobbies shouldn’t be work, they should be fun!
Nailed it. Play what makes you happy but be open to new titles and new experiences so you don’t miss out on something “outside” your regular gaming sphere.
Like trying out new cuisine. Don't knock it until you try it. Cheers!
Thank you as always. I appreciate the support, love, and generosity. It goes a long way 🥰
Just want to suggest Sword Weirdos and Cauldron.
Awesome, thank you for the suggestions! I'll add them to the list!
DEFINITELY do what makes you happy Big Guy!!!!! :)
Thanks 🥰
You still to this day have the best warcry battle reports. I too got swamped with new releases and left the game behind.
How awesome, such a beautiful piece of work ✨✨
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the way you painted your terrain. Did you make a tutorial on this?
I believe I did! It should be far back near the beginning of the channel. Ignore the potato video and audio quality please 😅
Understandable. I've been doing GW and Mini wargaming a long time. Their breakneck pace is rough on all but the rich. Thanks for the insight!
And thank you Ryan for the years of comments and input! Thanks, my friend 😊
I keep collecting and play Warcry, but only beacuse I use house rules, and play casualy. This way game can remain fun
Any suggestions on custom rules? Just starting out here
@@CharlieFultonSC Mostly we just agree on points, like 750, pick most fun battleplan instead of generating it random. Agree on any deployment we like. And also play without some abilities, if I play with someone who's learning
@@CharlieFultonSC I also try this rule, instead rolling playing with wild dice, we roll 8 dice instead
Thanks for the insight Gloomwalker! And yes, Reign in Hell is in the works. A little ways out from now, but I have definite plans for the title!
@@DiceChatter Glad to hear it! I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled, and in the meantime, I'll keep enjoying your Frostgrave reports!
That’s awesome! Happy to hear I was able to convince your friends to step into the world of Frostgrave!
Agree. McCullough’s games are right up my alley as well. Low barrier of entry and no pressure to expand.
(I have no reason to think you'd like either of these games, they're just what I'm into)
Thanks for the tips! I’ll add the games to my list of ones to peak at!
Definitely! Discovering and getting the books for all of these indie games has been a wonderful experience. Now I just need to run some games!
Thanks, Sage! Always happy to read your thoughts!
i really hope after a while you can play warcry again with the burden of stress etc, it would be amazing to see some warcry batreps again but even if they don't return the other batreps are still as amazing and fun to watch ^^
Maybe its just me, but i really don't care if peeps use the same teams or terrain etc as i understand it all takes time and i do like seeing people slowly expend their collection as it feels more grounded, it's why i love your terrain build vids, even if i can't make those yet etc, it's nice to see it slowly getting expended on what you need etc ^^
recently i got the luxary to try out hametsu and after just 1 game i got hooked and i think you owuld enjoy it as well with the more narative focuses batreps ^^ but i also think you might enjoy it and all you need is the core rule book ^^
i was a bit scared coming into this vid that it was gonna be a gw bad vid, but im happy that's not the case ^^ i really like gw alternative games that aren't other big ips like star wars or marval, but sometimes i feel the people focus to much play this cuz gw bad or its better than gw instead of look at this amazing game with a more posetive vibe, while i get gw is stepping on peeps toes, i think it's a product of just of how society is atm and it's just doing the same as other companies and just anything else and such is life, but maybe it's also just my mentallity to focus on the positive and just get models i think are cool and if i don't like something i have the luxary i have peeps around me that are fine with homebrew or i can just use them in other games and being able to have a good variation of games ^^
i really love your content whatever you make, and i hope you don't push yourself to much with the terrain and frostgrave stuff so it doesn't end up to much like what warcry has become for you ^^
(i also finally ordered some crafting dowels and stuff as i wanna try and make the barricades and than hopefully slowly expend so i can make the pillars etc as the terrain vids really inspire me)
Spookimi, thank you for the comment and the insight! Really appreciate you hanging around all these years. Also, happy to hear you are going to try and make some barricades! Start simple and work your way up, you go this! 😁
@@DiceChatter thnxies ^^
Happy gaming! 👍
Hell yeah! 👍
Enjoy titles that update, but don’t push past boundaries. Though, that thinking is a bit different for each individual gamer.
Hahaha! Didn’t mean to call you out! It seems we are not alone… I appreciate the insight as well 🥰
The GW treadmill is real and I get where you're coming from.
"Its easy, doesn't take forever, and scratches the tabletop itch." I couldn't have said it better myself 😅
Well said! I think this is a good mindset for almost anything in life! Thanks again!
Basalt Pillars! Did you hand craft those or were they a 3d print? If a 3d print, could you direct me to where I might find them?
Everything I made by hand! All the terrain tutorial are on the channel as well!
I love warcry, but I rarely get time to play.
It can be tough, but lately I have been realizing, I am the one who needs to make the time to game. Sometimes, that can be a bit difficult...
I feel the same way about warcry. It definitely got me into the hobby but have since moved on... to Five Leagues from the Borderlands specifically.
You are not the first to mention this title... I may need to give it a peak!
I found myself in this spiral. I have since moved on to Five Leagues from the Borderlands and Five Parsecs from Home and more. I've even been able to film a few solo battle reports for them, I need better lighting though. I don't regret moving away from GW. Besides, all of those random GW models I thought were cool now serve a better purpose than for a game no one around me plays. lol
A lot of folks have mentioned Five Leagues. May be something I should look at!
@@DiceChatter I've enjoyed it. At the risk of sounding like a shill you can check out my battle reports, GMG has some too.
Thank you, Trey! Glad I can be of some help with your hobby! Brings a bit of joy to my freezing heart! 🥶
i loved your Warcry Batreps...miss them
I miss your Warcry barrels, but I get it.
Ahhhhh! I like the way you smith your words! Really enjoy this take!
I’ve had the same thoughts 👍
Appreciate your comment! It’s nice to know there are more folks in the same boat. 🤓
Appreciate the comment and the insight! Always good to find title and games that can bleed a bit into each other! Happy gaming my friend. 🤓
Frostgrave FTW !! Its so much fun
I can only eco what you're saying about GW realeade schedule's. The only game I'm still somewhat keeping up with is necromunda.
+1 for forbidden psalm and rangers of shadow deep. Would love to see a battle report on either of those! 🎉
In due time, I hope to have some battle reports on all different kinds of tabletop games! The only decision, which one should I try next!?
@DiceChatter Rangers of Shadow Deep has a storytelling aspect to it that I think would work great with your way to making videos! But whichever strikes your fancy:)
You might try Rangers Over Shadowdeep, or the new GW Spearhead coming out with AOS 4.
I own the Rangers book! Looked through it the other day actually! And for AoS, it could be interesting to try out. Though, they "deleted" my Beasts of Chaos... 🙃
I absolutely appreciate how feel-good-ish this channel is, even when you are talking about such topic.
Happy gaming guys!
What's that sweet red minutaro looking mini called? The huge ass one? Lol is that a warcry model?
He is the big beasts of chaos model “Ghorgon.” I believe the model line isn’t supported by GW anymore with AoS 4 coming out.
Games Workshop games are jealous of your time, money, and attention. A GW game isn't a game you add to your collection, to play when you feel like it or have the time. They're second jobs, that you must keep up with.
And for something that's meant to be fun, that just sounds exhausting.
Well said! Appreciate the insight 🥰
All the things you say are the exact reasons why I only play Warcry, Warhammer Underworlds and Malifaux. Thanks!
I appreciate the support and happy gaming!
"I rarely game in stores"
I feel like it can be more fun to do it in a store, especially as a crafter.
Dang, I just started. I love it. GW's best game system.
It is worth saying that the overall best skirmish level wargame/campaign game released so far is Mordheim.
Warcry is the best ruleset that GW has produced (admittedly that’s not saying much!). I really enjoy the game and enjoyed your Warcry bat reps. Shame you won’t be making anymore. But as you say, do what makes you happy.
Thank you Andrew! I appreciate it my friend!
This is why bloodbowl is gw best and most popular game when have tournaments 2400 coaches at tournaments also releases every six or eight months the price point is the best
I was really curious and wanted to get into warhammer but….struggling to make sense of world of warhammer.
GW is like a needy girlfriend. Even when you spend every weekend with them, they find new ways to ask, "Do you still love me?"
Hahahaha 😂
LOVE THE KHEMMIS T SHIRT!!!!!!!
Thank you! They are a fantastic band!
Technically, every tabletop game is miniatures agnostic if you want it to be! 🤓 Appreciate your insight!
Cannibalize all that GW terrain and incorporate some of it into your Frostgrave builds.
hahah! Not a bad idea!
It is near the top of the list of games I'd love to dive into! I have a good friend who plays, maybe I can get a game in soon 😁
I love your Khemmis shirt!!!
its time for the advanced warcry, mordheim.
You are not the first to suggest Mordheim! Could be a blast!
