My wife and I lived in the Amish area of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, for many years and have always appreciated the work ethic and quality of the work provided by the Amish. Thank you for your videos, and I hope your farming and gardening continue to bloom and grow.
My friends down the road from us are building a house using the Amish. I have been disappointingly surprised at how sloppy, and compromisingly careless their work has been. Several things had to be fixed after the framing inspection including tearing part of the roof off and replacing it. The old man that did the concrete poured the patio slab right up against the wall OSB. No moisture barrier or expansion joint. It was pointed out to him before he poured but he went ahead and did it. I guess not all Amish are created equal.
@ yes they definitely are. I do business with other Amish in the area and they are always the best to work with. They in general have a good reputation here but I have heard some complaints about workmanship in the past. This was a crew of four young guys and they were fast but very sloppy.
Snow on the roof could also melt from the sun absorbing onto the dark shingles of your neighbor's roof, which may be more heat absorbent from the sun than your steel roof. Food for thought.
Kudos for choosing quality builders, and as an owner paying attention to the project from the time it came out of the ground. You have created a generational structure. For all those looking to build, look closely at the fit and finish and materials, this is a perfect example of doing it right.
@AlexandraFasuloBiz I like how up right that you are. You inspired me to investigate chat gpt, now it's helping me code a 3-D wave table synthesizer for the phone, lol. So, Thanksgiving to you.

Hi, I found your channel about a week ago and I'm a big fan of what your doing. I've been following other homesteading/ small farming channels for a long time and I have serious interest in escaping the 9 to 5 rat race and starting a small farm. I was wondering if you could go into detail about your short to mid term business plans for your farm. Everything you've built is impressive, however the structures, I'm assuming, are expensive and I am wondering how you plan to utilize them to justify their cost.
You can expect a lot of this from me in 2025! Things have been changing a lot - so I haven't wanted to report on it until I know what I am really doing.
you can get a satellite device for your propane tank that communicates directly with the provider so you don' have to check all the time. you can then see the level you have via internet too
The problem with spray foam is condensation moisture can cause mold inside of structures. Some spray foam jobs have caused people to abandon their houses because of mold health issues. It’s a real thing but not everyone experiences the same issues. Just keep an eye out for mold growing.
You have to be careful with humidity (e.g. growing things) with your type of building because it has spray foam, which is most likely closed cell. If the humidity is too high, it has nowhere to diffuse to and can get trapped in between the back of the wood panels and the spray foam (or vapour barrier) and then result in mold. Same goes for your ceiling because you have an insulated roof. Many houses, in contrast, are constructed with vented attics. The building does look nice and better suited to events or a gathering space.
As an excommercial grower... she will need a dehumidifier like most indoor grows have in any state. not one from home depot either, a company like Quest
Just found your channel. Amish have always been good with their work and with the recent US elections ( especially in Pennsylvania) they got good recognition and mileage 😊 . I guess TH-cam recognised this trend and suggested this video 😅 . Subscribed.
I love the Amish and their workmanship. It made me laugh when you said they didn't sponsor you to promote their work 😂Imagine having your video sponsored by the Amish?
It uses petrochemicals & sometimes will off gas. If you fill the cavity to edge of stud, cutoffs will be created & not reusable. Cost is often a bigger pill for most people.
Also, buyers/purchasers of properties that have spray in foam insulation are generally not able to get home loans, bank loans, etc, as banks, etc, refuse to deal with the stuff.
@ do you have any evidence of this? I know that there’s some places where it was improperly installed, wrong type used or insufficient prep, but I haven’t heard about it being an issue in the U.S. for financing.
I’d really appreciate a deeper dive into the economics of quality production. We are being manipulated into accepting low quality products & services for high costs as if that’s the only way people can live. Using the Amish as a model for further exploration I think would be very valuable for those of us inclined to quality over quantity, believe that quality can be attainable & worth the effort, without forcing workers into a stratum below livability & preparing for the future. We don’t have to be greedy nor fearful in order to live a quality life of material abundance!
Great builders come in all shapes and sizes. There are some great Amish crews but they do not have exclusive rights to quality work and skills. I spent 40 years in the trades and have been in on the build of thousands of new homes and buildings.I have a great respect for those in the trades that are simply 3 steps ahead of 90% of builders and tradesman. I have worked with men in different trades that are simply poetry in motion with a mind set that is truly something to watch. Just wanted to say that out of respect for all the master tradesmen out there.
Snow and cold is my favorite thing! But still, I don't like being cold. Congratualtions on your cozy barn! (7 degrees this morning in Iowa. Waiting for the snow...)
I lived in Upstate NY yes it's cold , you should Try the Michigan UP "Upper Peninsula" where I purchased a house, it gets Cold up here being a few minutes from Lake Superior "The largest freshwater lake in the world. And surrounded by the other Great Lakes. Most of us have Snow Mobiles as primary transportation during the winter we get an average of 300" of snow a year. Can't Drive In that or remove all of it .
So cool! Too bad there are no Amish in my state. If I had 100 of me (general contractor) who am skilled in many trades, I could do so much. Reliable, competent help is difficult to find today. 😔
Closed cell spray foam is the way to go so long as it's done correctly. I don't know if buildings in cold climates were lazily insulated. Most likely builders were ensuring if something got wet it could dry out, spray foam wasn't an option back then, or they were on a budget so they used fiberglass.
There’s lots of ways to cut corners, there’s little incentive to do a great job because it’ll be covered & can only be evaluated with technical equipment that needs understanding of systems after covering-even sprayed. No production builder would allow outside inspection before drywall, & wouldn’t do the last 10% anyway (just big areas if they have to). You also can’t count on building inspectors to verify proper installation. At least with closed cell, since it acts as an air barrier, you could have a blower door test done before drywall to verify air seal integrity.
Having a structure with NOWALLS separating bedrooms and bathrooms is genius. It's the only way to go when it comes to heating and cooling. Every "home" should be built this way.

There’s a saying: everything before’But ’ is 🐂💩. In this instance everything after is too 😏
@@ThePracticalProgressive Are you saying that spray foam doesn't catch fire? Anyway, that's your opinion about my opinion.
@@ThePracticalProgressive Okay, you're 100% right. They treat it with flame retardants. All 🐂💩 on my side. 🤣🤣
@@logan_black a fire entinguisher for a burning roof? ha. I think the hose outside would only work at that point
Your barn is beautiful! Would you be willing to share which company you used? I would love to talk to them before I start my build.
They are an Amish company that only services Upstate NY! Can give you the name if you are in this area?
@ I’m in Virginia so unfortunately that wouldn’t work. Seems like you found a really great crew though. Most that I talk to don’t do a lot of the finish work that your crew did. Good luck as you expand your farming business!
What was the final cost for the barn??
I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. After 3 years, I am 56 yo and have put $9,000 in an IRA and $40,000 in my portfolio with CFA, Evelyn Infurna. Since the goal of getting a job was to invest for retirement and NOT up my lifestyle, I was able to scale this quickly to $150,000. If I can do this in a year, anyone can.
I know this lady you just mentioned. Evelyn Infurna Services is a portfolio manager and investment advisor. She gained recognition as a former employee at Goldman Sachs; a renowned investor she is. Evelyn Infurna has demonstrated expertise in investment strategies n has been involved in managing portfolios and providing guidance to clients.
