I am “Modern Amish”. We adopt proven modern changes like electrical power when it improves efficiency. We use the internet restrictively to stay up to date. Thank you to the English world that support the Amish and modern Amish way of life.
We build doors and windows using a technique from Germany. Massively energy efficient.

Aloha. My parents bought a 100 year old house in Ohio when I was young. All the renovations and additions were done by Amish. My dad would pick them up and take them home at the end of the day. Humble, hardworking, community oriented, family people. Great craftsmanship!

I did basically what you are doing in rural West Virginia back in the 1970s as a "back to the land" Hippy. Fortunately, we had some old-timer neighbors who took us under their wing and got us on the right track. Without them, we would have had a much more difficult road to survival! They helped haul out of the woods our first winter firewood with their horses, taught me how to castrate piglets painlessly, clean out the well, and countless other basics that we would have had a long learning curve to overcome. I wish you the very best! The rewards can be beyond words or money!

I live in central NY state, my older brother bought an Amish-built shed last year, had to send the builder a letter to commission it. It's much the same kind of construction as your barn, but smaller, 10x20. They don't mess around, that shed is rock solid and gorgeous, and the cost was less than one would expect. I have a lot of respect for their work.

As a carpenter I would like to point out that there are gaps between the vertical boards on the barn doors, due to the wood shrinking. I always use ship lap joints between boards like this so when the shrinkage occurs the joint doesn't allow a crack to appear. I think it makes for a better looking door.

I also noticed that, I’m not a carpenter but a German. The pin at the bottom is also a bit far for my taste, gives the doors room to wobble and make annoying noises in the wind. I can see why they would do it like that for a real barn with animals going in and out though and a one point guide will always wobble anyway.

A welcoming entrance, where peace seemed to flow.
Their craftsmanship skilled, with precision and care,

I live in a 125 yr old original heritage house of a blueberry farm in Oregon. And the owners updated the house after no longer using it for blueberry processing and shipping, still has the dumb waiter in the basement. But they put new double pain windows through out , 27 in all. Some oversized. Because of that , i never use the A/C from the new heat pump they also installed. Even when its 100 degrees outside. Luckly the person who placed this house , also planted walnut and elm trees in stategic places on the 100 acre property. Thus giving shade at the most needed time , or sun after the leaves fall . Pure genius. And my electric bill in the summer is $58 per month, the winter $125. 2400 sq. Ft home 2 bedroom 2 large dining rooms and full walk in basement , however gravel floor . But makes a excellent root / wine cellar. For it stays between 50 to 65 degrees year round . With no heat or A/C . The elders knew how to build things to last , and be efficient.

Here, in Alberta we have the Hutterites, Mennonites, and other similar communities. I am glad we have them. By far, the energy-saving method the Amish used is the most interesting system I have seen so far. This idea will be moved to the top of my list of things to do to when it is time to renovate. For months I have been looking at different kinds of storm doors. None of them "called out" to me. This one looks like a game-changer. It uses the KISS principle. Does not need to be fancy or high-tech. Yet, as you pointed out, the Amish have a foot in the past, present, and future. You just earned a "subscriber". Your barn is beautiful. My family has farms in different parts of the world. My brother is a fourth-generation farmer. Even the farm he bought was over a couple of hundred years old and he was the second family to own that farm. Another part of my family has a multi-generational farm going back even longer. I am very happy to hear that you answered the calling. It is an honorable profession and passion. Make sure your children are fully involved in the farm. Learn as much as you can from the experienced farmers, Amish, and others. Welcome abord. All the best.

KLT. OK, good for you. Here's a free suggestion. Have three gardens. It'll take three years to get it going and complete one cycle. Work up a plot and plant it in a garden. After you get that going work up a second plot and start pumping that full of organic materials, wherever they may come from. Spoiled hay, etc. The "Ruth Stout no work gardening" book is excellent. Then work up a third plot. At the point where you stop adding organic matter to the second plot, work it in and start putting organic matter onto the third plot. Then each year, move your garden to the one with the oldest organic matter that has now rotted in the soil. And start the whole process over again. Each year the garden will move and each year you will be letting one plot rot and each year you will be adding organic matter to a third plot.
    "The 3 Garden Plan", KLT

People who live on their farm, improve the land (prove w/soil testing & well levels) and leave space for wildlife should not pay taxes on that land. Big investment firms & foreign owners who plant row crops to the edge should pay big taxes, and stop getting subsidies. Especially corn fuel ethanol. Bill Gates owns over 100,000 acres. He should be forced to sell that (at a discounted price because the rich have been dodging taxes for 22 years now) to any new or existing farmer who will homestead the land. Power to the people.

1:46 - THRESHING-When I was a kid, my school visited a farm. We were taught about 'threshing', which is separating the edible part of grain from the straw that holds it. It's the final step in the harvest and is usually done after reaping. The barn we visited had two sets of doors, each on opposite sides of the barn. To begin threshing, both sets of doors were opened, which would cause a draught to blow through the barn. By beating the straw on the floor at the door opening, the lighter material would be blown away while the heavier grain remained in place. This is why the floor area in a doorway is called a 'threshold'. It's funny that the reason why barn door openings were very useful after reaping, is the exact same reason why you needed 'inner' doors'. Great looking barn, btw.

I'm fine with some relaxing of grammatical conventions, for efficiency purposes, but too many times inaccurate names or characterizations are used to describe things. It is nice to have that "buffer" of land around you that you know nothing will be built on unless you yourself want it built. Most of the 'effiicency' of large buildings comes from the scale effect. If you take 8 children's blocks, there are 6 sides each for 48 sides. 48 sides losing heat from the 8 blocks. But if you take the same 8 blocks and put them together in a 2x2x2 larger block, then you only have 2x2 times 6 sides, for 24 surface sides. The other 24 sides are internally connected, and 'lose' heat to each other, so the heat isn't lost. The volume to surface area scaling change as things get larger is extremely powerful, and is where most of the 'savings' comes from.
Not knocking the doors, and if you have a heat leak then even a large building can quickly lose heat. But when you put the doors on and plug the heat loss, and you see 'wow, now it takes very little to heat the huge building', most of that change is still really happening because of the scale effect of the large building.
In other words the problem is it is a POWERFUL LOSS to have the heat hole on a large building. So putting the doors there and getting a huge change is from stopping the huge loss, not really because the doors are somehow 'super insulators'. Almost anything put in that same hole would have stopped the heat loss, even relatively poor insulators would have had an exaggerated effect. In fact solid wood is a sort of crappy insulator, insulation is far better and it's why they make dowel studs for less heat conduction, etc..
Huge change putting them on for sure, but a lot of the change happens because of the other side of the equation..

Appreciate your videos as I'm getting ready to move out to some 5 acres we have in the family. Sorry, but I don't believe you brought out how the design of the front barn doors blocked the wind from entering your barn when it is windy. Is it that the siding doors can be virtually closed when you open the inner doors or is it by the thick insulation the walls provude?

Amish built my Murphy bed and side cabinets. They are very well built. Very tiny living ready. The pullout shelf is a side table or computer desk or folding table.

The craftsmanship is beautiful. However, I would have chosen a better insulated door with triple-glazed glass. Even better would be adding an entryway to capture the cold air and prevent it from blowing directly into the building when the doors are opened. Finally, I would increase the wall insulation-they look quite thin and likely only allow for 10 cm. Increasing this to 20 cm or more would make it even better for warm and cozy winter nights.

In case they did not explain, The "x" on the doors are for the diagonal structural strength and can be put inside or outside, up or down, so they need to ask you which you prefer.

    So its double doors.
You could save even more energy if you have a Scandinavian envelope wrapping structure which will create a buffer-area that will allow you to access your barn without having the two layers of doors open at the same time, but instead only one layer of doors at the time; open the exterior door access the buffer area, close the exterior door, then open the interior door to access the barn. This will work year round if you are also cooling the barn in summer.

I heard a construction engineer that had done it for over 20 years explain that a 3 inch gap between two completely airtight surfaces is just as good as modern double pane windows for heat insulation. But they do have to be completely airtight or it doesn't work.

Some friendly advice. You didn't show us as you entered your passcode for the front door, but we can still hear the touchtones coming from the pad. A trained ear can know what those numbers are by the sounds they made as each number has a unique tone. I would suggest muting the video as you punch in those numbers.
