- 'Enemy' car display system is now written and working.
This test only displays the BMW in the center lane. Game is capable of displaying other cars in other lanes, but I need to include the graphic data for the other cars and write a random 'spawn' generator for road traffic.
Collision detection for enemy cars and roadside objects is working, just no feedback to game yet!
Next, more course data and those junctions!

I remember getting this back in the day for my amstrad cpc 464 with the green screen monitor. The excitement on the bus home seeing the images on the box it looked just like the arcade. My disappointment on loading was one of the biggest of my 49 years. Oh the frame rate and tyre squeal was horrendous. I still feel that pain.
It's interesting that the C64 version had a bit of a kicking back in the day but, poor graphics aside, it at least had some semblance of speed. The CPC version is pretty poor all round considering what the machine could be capable of in the right hands.
The main problem was, the machine could do better, but several studios simply ported over their crappy Spectrum versions and called it a day.
Now this has given me a few ideas for earlier systems :)
Trs80 model 1 version would be good
DO IT!!!!!!1 ;-)
The engine could probably be used on the Plus/4, with some tweaks for the TED.
Little does he know it yet, but I will pester Luca over at Plus4 World at some point about this. I will be able to 'convert' a lot of it myself and intend to do so at some point, but will no doubt trip up on some things!
Could never run like this on a C64
Quite impressive. Commodore had the best text graphics of all the 8 bits
There are a few changes I could suggest to the PETSCII charset to make some graphics easier to do, but from over 40 years out, my suggestions may be past there use-by date... ;-)
Good job, it runs almost as well as the original!
It's not quite as 'fast', but I'm not using any sprites or raster bars for any graphics. It is literally all PETSCII graphics, so it runs quite well considering!
I love it! Frame rate definetely feels like the original!
Thanks! The rate isn't quite as fast I don't think, but it runs as well as it can for something entirely PETSCII!
This is incredible, well done!
Thanks!
This is simply wonderful. Well done sir!
Thank you!
Insane stuff!
Sometimes you have to try doing insane things!
So, monochrome PET version when? 😁
It is really nice!! Why don't you define your own charset? It could be a lot more similar to the original :)
Well, I could do, but the point of this project was to do a PETSCII version just to be different - as far as I can see, there has never been a 2.5D racer done on the #C64 in PETSCII before!
In theory, with a few adjustments there is no reason it can't be adapted in the future to do a non-PETSCII version.
There's something I never understood PETSCII is what? An engine for the C64?
Just had to be woke with putting a black guy in it 🙄
Who's borrowing the family brain cell this weekend?
Commie, can you make a none African version?
/me checks the SEGA arcade original... yep, dude driving definitely has brown HAIR...
/me peers at screen again, yes, definitely brown HAIR...
