This is fantastic! And crazy timing :) I'm about to embark on the same swap in my 110, albeit from Canada so sourcing a euro M57 is going to be super tricky.
I've got an e39;) so you are removing that old bucket of bolts then eh! Glad you've seen the light! I guess mine will end up being used for this or pumping water out the ground lol in the back of beyond buttFu*ck nowhere at least it will last forever and be of use to someone :)
Using a 1.1 ATB Transfer Box with standard diff ratios & 265/75 r16 tires, M57 has plenty of low down torque so will be able to easily get off the mark & should quieten down when cruising at 75 ish.
@@sixthelementengineering54 Very nice, I'm also fitting a M57 to my 90, currently removing the engine from the doner car so you're a bit ahead of me. I'm undecided whether to use the R380 or a GS6-53DZ but I was also leaning towards the Ashcroft special 1.1 gear set for the transfer box.
Ahh nice! yeh sounds like your a little behind me. Im sure you'll catch up tho! yeh that's a decision i struggled with & am still even at this late stage considering altering. The issue with r380 setup is you get a small bit of chattering from the gearbox at idle due to clutch plate not being perfectly matched to the box. Bmw 6 speed is a strong box but less proven in a defender & obviously requires a bit more work to get mounted in place & everything working properly, the gearing is also worth looking at as the 1st gear in the bmw box is incredibly high so you'd probably want to get a 1.0 or possibly even lower ratio transfer box (check on ashcroft calaculator). Ive gone r380 route because i was able to get a use r380 with HD bearings dirt cheap.
How much do you know about the M57? Your engine should have the problematic swirl flaps for example (I think they were improved early 2004 all cars with DPF) they break and fall in the engine. So that is something you should address. There's a lot of other small things as I said I don't know how much knowledge you have with these engines...
Hey there, thanks for your advice appreciate it. I've done a fairly substantial amount of reading into it and had a few conversations with people who know it like the back of their hand. Mine luckily doesn't have swirl flaps as it was taken from a manual e39 530d. I will also be deleting the egr & generally giving it a once over before i fit it. Thanks once again, ollie

What ratio transfer box are you going for?
