Ryan Villanueva I don't think China is a big bastion of what quality is since Transformers and the Fast and Furious movies were huge successes over there and a lot of their own big movies (especially the highest selling ones) tend to be subpar at best. But the TLJ is pretty mediocre and flawed though.

Now, count how many random-ass Jackie Chan movies pop up like "Kung Fu Yoga" or "Railroad Tigers" and even non-Jackie Chan movies that look like straight-to-Redbox fare. Now think: every single one has likely grossed more in China than The Last Jedi will.

I am Chinese, just give u guys some ideas how bad TLJ performed in China. I went to a theater located in downtown Shanghai on opening Friday of TLJ. There were only two dudes paid the full price of the tickets. The film lead in box office was a garbage comedy which named after Star Wars to mock this franchise(ex file the return of the ex). The bloggers in China was so pleased with TLJ ,and called it a high quality product. However the fans was so pissed by the stupid story line and incoherent narrative.
Shin Seiki Evan because when the originals came out they were banned in Chinese cinemas. They never got on the Star Wars train to begin with so the nostalgia factor is lost on them.
Now I haven't seen TLJ and I will never watch it because I saw The force awakening 2 years ago and based off of that movie I knew this one was going to be worse. I'm not criticising tlj from the point it tries to get across, but from its storytelling, which it failed. It is like cooking, what's the point of a chef making a new delicious gravy when the chicken it is made for is undercooked? No one's going to care about the gravy. The customer will throw shit at the chef for trying to poison him with salmonella. If an author wants to get across deep messages in his story, then it helps that he doesn't focused solely on that to the point of neglecting other parts of the story. If that happens, it will distract from the message the author will try to get across. The reader will spend more time on the bad then the good.

Jumanji 2 was a lot of fun. The Chinese, like anyone else on the planet, like fun movies. TLJ was not fun. It was the complete opposite. It was the BvS of Star Wars, even treating one of the most iconic heroes like shit and having them act like nihilistic, sad and broken husks (Luke and Superman).
I'm a foreigner in China and saw it was dropped from our cinema after a couple a days because only a couple of people were going to the showings. This shows what would happen if TFA was released in the west as a completely new thing. People would think. well those light sword things are interesting but what's this film about? Where's the excitement? Why should I care about these characters. This is the case in China because the original trilogy was banned the first time around. Take away nostalgia and Disney Star Wars is nothing.

I mean nostalgia is fueling Disney Star Wars, it's the only reason people will keep going back to it. I don't even think any exposition is needed regarding the older characters, sometimes the less you know the more interesting characters are but we need to know about the main characters at least. I mean the new characters are not interesting at all and we have no reason to care about them because we know nothing about them. TLJ is even worse at this.What do we learn about Finn, Rey, Poe, Snoke? Nobody develops, nobody has an arc. Ask people who like TLJ this simple question - what's it about? If they can come up with an answer other than - female empowerment I'll applaud them. I saw a video that basically said Ghostbusters is the only movie that isn't about anything but it works because of the chemistry between the main characters and the jokes. TLJ seems to be trying to be a comedy that isn't about anything but fails at that too.
I've been a fan from the very beginning when Star Wars was not called Episode IV A New Hope and I was not blinded by nostalgia. In fact, I could smell the stench a mile away the moment I heard Disney bought the franchise from Lucas and announced a whole slate of films. I trusted my intellect and stayed away from all Disney Star Wars films. I learned my lesson from the prequels, which is NEVER FALL FOR THE HYPE no matter how much they want to beat you over the head with it.

The Chinese don't like the current star wars characters, since they are unlike-able, ugly, and act in dumb ways. They also don't like the lack of color and flair in the current movies, while treating established characters poorly (han/luke). There's been other commentary regarding the action scenes being boring compared to rogue one, which had one actor salvage that for them (hint, it wasn't cassian, jyn, or even vader...). So yeah, they must also be very sexist and racist as well, obviously (in spite of obvious pandering).

I went to see TLJ in Shanghai with my friends, and no one came out satisfied. Also, I'm not aware of any pirate version of TLJ available in China, probably because it was not worth pirating since it's no big hit. To be honest, no one in China would go to see a foreign movie just because it features some random asian girl. Rogue one did well in China because its Chinese actors are famous. Yen is an action star and Jiang Wen was a top-notch actor-director that produced a great movie in 2010. So when a SW movie got them in the cast, people wanted to see it, but why would a random Vietnamese actor make any difference? As a result ,only those who know about Star war(which are far fewer than in US) in China went to see it. Everyone I know whom watched TLJ are complaining about the plot holes, the inconsistency between TFA and TLJ, and that they ruined Luke. They know a bad movie when they see one.
C'mon now. Donnie Yen is NOT a diversity hire. The man is a martial arts legend, and his character added to the Jedi mythos......I liked him in the fllm and his Polenesian sidekick bloke with the machine lasgun. In a way they harped back to C3P0 and R2D2 comedic partnership, which in turn reffd back to the two 'crap samurai' characters in The Hidden Fortress. It worked, wheras all the rest of the diversity hires ARE obvious checklist hires.

I looked up box office in Russia - no changes compared to Rogue One. And saw an article in russian titled "Last Jedi's box office skyrocketing all around the world", and I was immediately like "Mhm, yeah sure. Disney is trying to keep a straight face by spreading fake news around the world". Russian bloggers are also divided in opinion, some are for some are against this movie. And I can't explain the success of TLJ, we are for the most part a very traditional society.
TLJ made money because TFA was competent enough and set up mysteries that could have been epic stories and plotlines. If we knew what would happen in TLJ, I guarantee not nearly as many would go see it

I’m not sure if this is related but what is really interesting is they keep making comic books and novels to justify and fill in the many plotholes in the new movies (i.e there was a comic book that explains how Phasma escapes Starkiller base). I understand that those sidestories aren’t the main the main focus of the new trilogy and not every plot hole can be filled all at once but it is not a good movie if you have to keep relying on extra material to make sense. Theres probably gonna be a novel about Snoke and his backstory which would be more interesting than TLJ. Theres a difference between expanding the story and filling the story EDIT: Its also not a good story if the director himself has to constantly explain the story

With original 6 films I was able to understand the plot flow just fine, and then the old EU (current Legends) expanded it and confirmed some things. With new films too often I and many other people wonder WTF happened and how, and that's when I hear recommendations to read some book or comics to understand these films. So films aren't even providing the basic info, turning new EU into damage control first and means of expansion second. That's poor work being done.

Well, I'll make a wild guess here and say that SW isn't well received in China since they know very well the "heroe's journey" story line, they have one of best stories of all time Journey to the West, and even today produce manhuas and stories that follow the same plotline but are hundreds of times better and more extense but at the same time have coherence, make sence and are logical. Disney are full of themselves. You know why? Because the head leader of Lucas Film is a female "feminist" money maker. Kathleen Kennedy She even stated I think in a press conference that " She doesn't need to cater to "male" fans "... she doesn't care about Star Wars Fans or Lore as long as they make profit. She knows that even if she gets fired ( and she will ) she still gets paid at the end.... but at the end, the Fans have nothing. I am very disappointed in Disney for having a woman that thinks for herself instead of thinking for the Fans. I think they should re-do star wars 8 with James Cameron as Director. We will all be "guaranteed" to have the star wars we always wanted. Rian johnson wasn't ready for this and was influence by Disney to alter the storyline to their convenience for "kids" and parents. NOT for Star Wars Fan. They gambled on the fact that the old generation ( us ) won't bother if they change everything to their taste.. but nope. They made a big mistake because the "old" generation is more then present in social media and around the world. It's because of our voice that "China" has decided to reduce their screening ( as they stipulate in the article ). Without "true fans" voicing out there, Movies, Producers, Directors are nothing. If Movie Producers don't want to get " bashed ", they should listen to the "true fans" voices out there because "we" built star wars. "we" are the real consumers ( comic books, video games, conventions, social media, etc etc etc. "we" are the one who will decide of the fate of the Producer's and Director's legacy. Unfortunately, some Producers and Directors think they're so "up there" on the ceiling that they are blinded by what is really good or wrong for a movie. That's why Rian Johnson's legacy and reputation is going downhill and will be hated for a "very" long time ( ouch..... ) .... and "that" will affect many things... his subvention for movies.... the cast that "will not" want to be part of his movies....the "crew" that will not want to work with him...Producers that will "not" want him in their projects... etc etc etc.... his reputation is going down but I don't think he can see it because according to his tweeter account, he thinks like Disney. So him and Disney are both going down hill... but they don't see it as they are blinded by stats " paid by Disney ) to make false promotion on a fail movie. I am Chinese, just give u guys some ideas how bad TLJ performed in China. I went to a theater located in downtown Shanghai on opening Friday of TLJ. There were only two dudes paid the full price of the tickets. The film lead in box office was a garbage comedy which named after Star Wars to mock this franchise(ex file the return of the ex). The bloggers in China was so pleased with TLJ ,and called it a high quality product. However the fans was so pissed by the stupid story line and incoherent narrative.

It is like cooking, what's the point of a chef making a new delicious gravy when the chicken it is made for is undercooked? No one's going to care about the gravy. The customer will throw shit at the chef for trying to poison him with salmonella.
If an author wants to get across deep messages in his story, then it helps that he doesn't focused solely on that to the point of neglecting other parts of the story. If that happens, it will distract from the message the author will try to get across. The reader will spend more time on the bad then the good.

I'm a foreigner in China and saw it was dropped from our cinema after a couple a days because only a couple of people were going to the showings. This shows what would happen if TFA was released in the west as a completely new thing. People would think. well those light sword things are interesting but what's this film about? Where's the excitement? Why should I care about these characters. This is the case in China because the original trilogy was banned the first time around. Take away nostalgia and Disney Star Wars is nothing.

As a story is doesn't work, nothing in it is set up or payed off correctly, it doesn't explain itself to a new audience, it all happens assuming the audience needs no exposition. Its treats itself like a long episode of a tv series. When Han died I just laughed, if you didn't know who he was then he was just some guy tossed off a bridge like a used rag. If you did then Han died a sad divorcee wearing the same clothes, smuggling, gambling for 50 years straight like he was having a prolonged midlife crisis, then he get's killed by his serial killer emo son, what a garbage life. Rey and Fin acting grief stricken when a guy they've known for no more than a few hours dies is so forced I can't believe it wasn't cut.
I mean nostalgia is fueling Disney Star Wars, it's the only reason people will keep going back to it. I don't even think any exposition is needed regarding the older characters, sometimes the less you know the more interesting characters are but we need to know about the main characters at least. I mean the new characters are not interesting at all and we have no reason to care about them because we know nothing about them. TLJ is even worse at this.What do we learn about Finn, Rey, Poe, Snoke? Nobody develops, nobody has an arc. Ask people who like TLJ this simple question - what's it about? I've been a fan from the very beginning when Star Wars was not called Episode IV A New Hope and I was not blinded by nostalgia. In fact, I could smell the stench a mile away the moment I heard Disney bought the franchise from Lucas and announced a whole slate of films. I trusted my intellect and stayed away from all Disney Star Wars films. I learned my lesson from the prequels, which is NEVER FALL FOR THE HYPE no matter how much they want to beat you over the head with it.

There's been other commentary regarding the action scenes being boring compared to rogue one, which had one actor salvage that for them (hint, it wasn't cassian, jyn, or even vader...).

I went to see TLJ in Shanghai with my friends, and no one came out satisfied. Also, I'm not aware of any pirate version of TLJ available in China, probably because it was not worth pirating since it's no big hit.
To be honest, no one in China would go to see a foreign movie just because it features some random asian girl. Rogue one did well in China because its Chinese actors are famous. Yen is an action star and Jiang Wen was a top-notch actor-director that produced a great movie in 2010. So when a SW movie got them in the cast, people wanted to see it, but why would a random Vietnamese actor make any difference? As a result ,only those who know about Star war(which are far fewer than in US) in China went to see it.
Everyone I know whom watched TLJ are complaining about the plot holes, the inconsistency between TFA and TLJ, and that they ruined Luke. They know a bad movie when they see one.

I’m not sure if this is related but what is really interesting is they keep making comic books and novels to justify and fill in the many plotholes in the new movies (i.e there was a comic book that explains how Phasma escapes Starkiller base). I understand that those sidestories aren’t the main the main focus of the new trilogy and not every plot hole can be filled all at once but it is not a good movie if you have to keep relying on extra material to make sense. Theres probably gonna be a novel about Snoke and his backstory which would be more interesting than TLJ. Theres a difference between expanding the story and filling the story

The Expanded Universe should expand, not patch up. With original 6 films I was able to understand the plot flow just fine, and then the old EU (current Legends) expanded it and confirmed some things. With new films too often I and many other people wonder WTF happened and how, and that's when I hear recommendations to read some book or comics to understand these films. So films aren't even providing the basic info, turning new EU into damage control first and means of expansion second. That's poor work being done.
Lords of the Sith and Thrawn are pretty fine books. Tarkin, not so much.
