I couldn't forgive how the heart of the franchise, Luke, was treated. This character meant everything to Mark and the real fans. RIP Star Wars.

Yes, the treatment of Luke was disgraceful, from a soul and economic perspective. How do you sell modern Luke toys if he's dead to the fans?

Luke Skywalker is one of the most bland, boring, overrated characters in the history of cinema. People only like him because: 1. He's a blank slate whom they can project themselves onto and 2. He's surrounded by cool characters like Han, Leia, Yoda, R2, etc. TLJ gave Luke actual character and made him a human being. Fans just don't like the idea of goodie two-shoes milquetoast Luke making mistakes and having faults.

I've rejected disney wars as glorified fanfiction for a long time, for many reasons. it isn't true to the original saga. tlj just confirmed it when they literally burned up the Jedi legacy and spat on Luke Skywalker. It's fanfic. I'm sticking with the EU (which was canon by the way, and Lucas approved it) and ignoring this crap that doesn't live up to the true Star Wars.

Kathleen Kennedy, TLJ and the direction of Star Wars killed any joy I had for the franchise. When the Solo teaser came out today I felt nothing... and that’s the future of SW, feeling nothing for it anymore.

You aren't alone. I watched the Solo trailer later night and could only think - how is Darth Bimbo (Kennedy) going to murder this story? We know that she has fired the original directors because they didn't tout her SJW / liberal agenda apparently.

Daniel Tuesta I think we need a new franchise one in the same fashion as starwars but doesn’t cater to sjw acolytes and politically correct culture it need some 80’s level of creativity. The problem with the industry is that it’s creator come from a blandness factory and when the realization hits them the shove the terrible ideology in the faces of their audience.

Alorha Baga and they have certainly succeeded. I see that line from the film used a lot to refer to Disney’s current actions with the way they are handling the franchise, I wonder if it was intentional on their part for the line to be perceived as their new manifesto 🤔

I've never seen the middle-stage of a trilogy handled so poorly; burning down all the interesting plot points from the previous film and ruining old well-established characters, causing TLJ to simultaneously destroy the past legacy _and_ future prospects of the brand. TLJ felt like a rush-job end to a duology.

I rewatched the prequels recently and despite all the flaws, and there are a lot not to mention how badly those movies aged in comparison of the original trilogy (despecialized ed) well, it's far better than TFA & TLJ,; at last the prequels were original stories and not awful remakes disguised in new movies.
And at the time I really didn't like the prequels, so no way to say I'm a prequel fan ;)

Star Wars has already become the Transformer movies (without the Chinese audience as you said). Defenders of Episode 8 usually say "The plot was inconsistent and the cast was iffy but the visuals were nice, and the movie entertained me. That's the point of a movie for me, so it was good". They literally describe the Transformer movies! All flash, no substance.

Solo trailer was predictable, highly sanitized, a really rotten looking cosplay of adult children trying to fill the shoes of actual great actors. It's a pretty disgusting cash grab. Disney is just running SW into the ground. Overseas market is dead to them, Disney to fix things need to vault the Solo film, release a subpar E9 and vault the entire franchise for 15-20 years and let it cool and hand it to writers, directors and producers that actually give a damn.

    • @Trollificusv2
      @Trollificusv2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Shit, they need to retcon the un-canoning of the SWEU novels, fanfics, lore, wikis and art and avail themselves of whatever parts of it they want...for FREE. Hell, it's already got a built in fan base and gives them proven-attractive characters, timeline and set of stories.

    • @domehammer
      @domehammer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The trailer also shows either Disney has no confidence the actor for Han Solo can do his role or the actor is so bad they took so long to cut a trailer without showing his face. Cause you figure you would show more then back of Han Solo head... his only face shot is heavily obscured.

There's an easy solution...it's called not giving a fuck. Try it out sometime, works wonders for me. Just ignore everything Disney does and like the real Star Wars, as it was pre-2012. Don't pretend for a minute that the Disney era is canon. It's not and never has been a part of Lucas' vision or the Star Wars saga. So...who cares what they do? It's just for profit, not story. It need not concern you.

MARK MY WORDS! When they finally do get rid of Steven Spielberg's secretary the best we can hope for is someone who will do a reboot of the franchise. Disney has major internal problems with creativity and direction that have been pointed out by major shareholders for over a decade now. It hides these problems by buying out other creative interests and milking them dry. It's basically playing musical chairs with creative properties. Eventually it is going to run out of cash or properties.

I think even 2 years would be acceptable if not for the spinoff films and cartoons like Star Wars Rebels being pumped out simultaneously. There's just too much Star Wars and it's not special anymore. When the original Clone Wars cartoon came out it was a big deal because it was more canon Star Wars stories and bridged the gap between Episodes 2 and 3 and also fixed a lot of the plotholes in the prequels. With so much at once you can't really build the hype.

  • @LunaProtege

Its funny how antithetical the line from "The Last Jedi" is to Disney's entire business model, while illuminating their creator's own self loathing. Disney makes its money off of the history they have either created or bought; and should they let the past die, they destroy themselves in the process... Yet, they still go ahead and try to do it.
More specifically, by forsaking the past of a franchise and what people enjoyed about the series, they incur the wrath of the fans, who promptly abandon the company for what it did to it.

  • @AllenLinnenJr
    @AllenLinnenJr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

I only know one truth. It is time for Star Wars to end. Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.
Disney is relentless. If the franchise is not destroyed, it will be shitty Star Wars movies without end.
Every single Disney movie, including your hoped for, Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, is now an enemy of True Star Wars.
First, we must boycott the Solo movie. We must catch them off balance.
Do what must be done, Star Wars fan. Do not hesitate. Show no mercy.

What's sad is... Disney decided that all of the great extended universe stuff no longer mattered and pretty much never existed. To me, everything from Special Edition up to the last jedi isn't canon to me... but Star Wars Holiday Special IS!!
... Hell, it's still better than the last 6 films :(

SJW toys doesn't sell, hasn't Disney leaned that from Marvel Comics? Star Wars was the only comic that wasn't infected much by SJWness. The proof is that they don't even have comics for any of the new characters other than a series with Poe Dameron and a short of Captain Phasma.

tfa broke my back, and i only saw it cuz my friend made me borrow (well i kinda wanted to see it but i already looked up the plot and story and whatever so i knew it sucked) tfa..... i thought it wasn't as bad as i originally thought, but at the same time, the story sucked ass.... then i kept getting the response "o 8 will explain 7, make it better"...................... so they agree its not a good stand alone movie, if 7 was by itself, it sucks..... its stupid to think "o the sequel will make it better" historically sequels suck worse than the original..... and tlj didn't disappoint there.... the only movie that i think blew people away and was a sequel was "the dark knight"..... tfa was like "theh dark knight rises".... where is the joker?/knights of ren? how did batman get the nuke out in time?/ how the absolute fuck did rey do all that force abiilties, but at the start she couldn't even get more food "last week it was afull portion".... y is she always drawing her blade/ attacking people first, thats the sign of a sith...... i can keep going but i think u get the point..... when i watchd the movie, my jaw dropped when solo tried to give her a gun, and she said "i can take care of myself" bitch........ what about taking care of others? solo offering her a job? all she wanted to do was go back to her home, y did she stick around?

I divorced myself entirely after Disney shitcanned the EU in its entirety.
That should have been the single biggest warning sign imaginable for fans. It was a move that said Disney were willing to throw **everything** in the trash for the sake of convenient (read: hack) writing and marketing. Lo and behold, that's EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID.
Should Star Wars flop, it will be because of weak writing and pushing (Ma)Rey Sue cardboard cutouts in place of solid characters. Turns out, marketing alone cannot carry a franchise to new heights, not even Star Wars, indefinitely.

Disney has simply been knocking it out of the park again and again between Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar. I wish to God they'd give us more Muppets and Tron and less live action adaptations of their animated films, but whatever. So long as the Star Wars and Marvel films continue to be as good as they have been, I'll happily shill for them.

Also, ESPN is spouting off the same left-wing politics, as well as having the same politics seep into everything they do inside the Anglosphere, meaning it's something to do with Disney as a whole, since you don't see many studios forcing their politics down everyone's throat. Then again, Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM (the studio formerly known as United Artists), and Gravitas Ventures don't keep everything old behind paywalls or have borderline paranoia levels of content protection forcing people to pirate their crap.

he sold it because he felt too old to continue. And, he's got a young kid he'd rather take care of. He said it takes 10 years (for him) to make a trilogy, and he can't. That's why sold his franchise - not to only rake in billions (which he spends on charity), but to secure the future of his employees. 2000, last I heard.

Films are supposed to be emotional experiences. The huge error everyone made about Star Wars (arguably even George Lucas) was that the effects and action were it's biggest draw. The effects were great (in the OT anyway) but unless the effects and action are backed up with credible characters you might as well be watching a fireworks display. If you leave the theatre without feeling emotionally fulfilled in some way then the film has failed.
I'm speaking as someone who writes screenplays and prose, has directed three short films picked up by several film festivals and I plan to make my feature debut next year. This isn't an opinion, it is based upon my training. For years I was trying to work out why my scripts didn't work but, for some odd reason, my prose stories did. People really connected with my prose writing emotionally but I couldn't get the same reaction when I wrote a script.
My scripts were all for concept based films, and I'd discover later that what they were missing were credible character arcs. When I started writing character oriented scripts suddenly I found that people connected emotionally to the script when they read it. Where did I get this idea that it was all about the idea, effects and action? That's right, from modern Hollywood films. They're leading everyone to grow up thinking that is the be all and end all of storytelling and I say that that's not even the start.
When Irvin Kershner directed The Empire Strikes Back he was allowed to do whatever he wanted (a bit like Rian Johnson). He was one of Lucas's tutors in film-making so I don't see him contradicting his teacher anyway. Kershner decided to focus on the development of the characters, he did that because he knew how important the characters were and how the audience can only really get behind characters and feel the tension in the action scenes if they cared about the characters. Thus the priority of any storyteller (not just film-maker) should always be the characters (incidentally, if you ever wondered why you felt The Empire Strikes Back was the best Star Wars film, that's why, it's better written and the directorial focus is on the characters).
This is a lesson Rian Johnson needs to learn, rather than destroying characters to make his silly concept based film work the way he'd written it. I can't believe personally, as a writer myself, that he calls himself a 'writer/director' - that is an insult to writers frankly.
You could put two characters dressed in robes in a cave, make a whole film in there with little to no visual effects or action. If you wrote the characters well enough you could still make an engaging film, you could still make a film that could be accepted as a Star Wars film by everyone who rejected The Last Jedi. Stay within the story world rules established over all the previous films, give your characters goals that we can all understand and make those characters' behaviour consistent and credible, and Star Wars fans wouldn't reject it.
I try to tell this to people on pro-Star Wars videos. I try to explain concepts of storytelling going back thousands of years. Their retort is always, 'That's just your opinion.' No, it's not my opinion. I didn't go through all that education to learn opinions. There are objective standards that stories, on film or in books, should be held to - standards that most films were held to until recently, now that its all about 'fan service', its all about reselling emotional journeys we're nostalgic about.
Fan service will die out when it becomes less profitable. Nostalgia fatigue we'll all suffer from in the end. Then, when they want to try and repeat that formula with a new generation, they're going to come to an awful disheartening conclusion - that because they're pushing so few original films now, there will be nothing for the next generation to get nostalgic about.

Sir, you truly know your job. Or at least how it should be based.
THAT approach is what is missing in this late years about films and storytelling: shiny visuals are nice if they complete a good story, not if they are theonly thing present in a movie.
I hope you'll got all the fortune you'll deserve with your futur projects...

As for The Wall Street Journal, the Reason its honest is because its only interested in the Money and Business side of things. Collide and other places like it are on the fan and entertainment arena, and make money by Fans tuning in. They need Star Wars to stay fresh or else eventually even Hate Posts won't sustain it.
People will simply walk away from Star Wars, and a Huge chunk of their Viewership will decline.
Wall Street Journal helps people make investments. One doesn't need t be a Fan of Star Wars to buy Lucasfilm or Disney stock, ad one needs to know if the company is declining in sales. If The Wall Street Journal says Star Wars is Great and doing well, and people invest only to loose money, or even make less back on their investment, and its because The Wall Street Journal lied to hem, then they are hit.
As to the Rotten Tomatoes Score, I don't Think you read the article quiet right in that regard. While The Last Jedi is standing at 48% Audience Score right ow, in its opening weekend it saw 75%, and lowered to the 60's after the first week, and by the end of its second week was down to 57%. It was a gradual decline, but if you are discussing opening week only, it was actually doing well with generally favourable fan reviews.

I realize this is going to sound sexist. But the worst thing Disney did was pass the movie to a female lead.
Now i have no problem with a female lead, or a male lead being replaced by a female lead.
But Star Wars isn't just a movie franchise. It's also a toy franchise. And as much as we may hate it the fact is boy's do not want to play with what they consider to be girl's toy's.
I remember as a kid not wanting to buy any of the girl power rangers or x-men toys even though they were my favorite shows. I'm long past that mindset now but as a kid i had no interest in action figures of female characters.
If anyone can name a toy series where the lead was switched from a boy to a girl and did not suffer from it please let me know; because I'm drawing a blank.

That's slightly different than the millions of children who are the bulk of the market (and the real goldmines of any sane toy's industry). The point is: would a modern 8-10 y.o. boy buy "my little pony", if they were still made for girls, and with girls on the tv / internet ads? I'd say nope!

I know about the EU since up to a point i had read most of the EU as a child. And to be honest most eu books are forgettable garbage that could also be refered to as milking the brand. There are only a tiny few i really like. If you like scifi books then there are far better choices outside the star wars realm. The eu's biggest problem is the Force where it is treated as a cure all for everything, a get out of jail free card whenever the writer writes himself into a corner he can't get out of.

Uh... Lucas didn't _really_ know that after Return of the Jedi it was time to "rest the trilogy". He was just fuckin' sick of it.
He'd ended up ghost-directing Jedi (which was _not_ what he'd intended to do) and his wife (who'd spent years begging him to take time off) had just left him for the guy who'd installed the huge sky-light at Skywalker Ranch. Star Wars, and his obsessive attachment to the details of it had just cost him his marriage, and his previous plans to expand, expand, expand until there were 12 movies, just kinda disappeared, because: fuck everything. Not because he instinctively knew that _it_ needed a rest to avoid over-saturating the market. It was _him_ that needed the rest.

    • @zardox78
      @zardox78 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, in this particular instance, George's insistence that the opening of Empire be _exactly_ the same, beat for beat as it was for Star Wars meant that he wouldn't put Irvin Kershner's credit there. The directors guild let Lucas get away with doing that for Star Wars because it was a small detail of what was thought to be a small movie (until it opened), and _he_ was the director. Plus his name did kind of appear inside the word "Lucasfilm".
But they warned him about doing that again for Empire... and he did it anyway. And they ended up fining Kershner for allowing that to happen. Lucas paid the fine for him (which was actually only like a 4-digit figure), but blamed the studio system in general for enforcing their clearly-stated rules. So he dropped out of the directors guild out of spite, and therefor could not bring in his friend Steven Spielberg to direct Return of the Jedi (yes, that was supposed to be a thing).
Instead he had to hire someone who _wasn't_ in the guild. Someone who couldn't speak English and deferred back to Lucas for virtually every decision. Meanwhile, back at the ranch...
Details to be found here sfdebris.com/videos/special/shadowsjourney.php but it _will_ be time-consuming.

They thought with Star Wars they had a permanent Pavlov's dog set up. They only had to show the Star Wars emblem and the fans would start drooling and handing them money. The fact that they had no plans and nothing to build towards in the current trilogy really killed stuff. The films are kind of aimless now with no real purpose other than to show new characters and spaceships for toys. Oh yeah and hopefully get folks to visit the Star Wars amusement parks for lots of forced corporate fun.

Did I miss anything? List of Last Jedi fails:
    1. The Hero’s Journey
    2. Character development ( one dimensional characters )
    3. Pacing
    4. Too many undeveloped plot points
    5. SJW stuff
    6. Continuity to Force Awakens and any other Star Wars film.
    7. The Force theme: No temptation to turn to the Dark side and no Fear when facing the Dark Side. “He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster . . . when you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you” ― Friedrich Nietzsche
    8. Stakes - at no point we fear for the heros lives
    9. Out of place humor
    10. Force learning contradictions among many other contradictions. Both Luke and Kylo teach the same thing... let go of the past, be in the present. It could be an interesting point but it doesn´t go deep. Too short and too out of context. Seams like the lesson is directed for the audience and not so much for the character of Rey. A real slap on the face on the fan base.
    11. No trainning required to become a Jedi and to get powers you just have to download an app. Basically trainning and knowledge was replace by belief.
    12. Even though Star Wars starts with a fairy tale opening "A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away..." The whole frame of the story telling was based on a Legend frame work. Like La Morte d´Arthur... and not a fairy tale like Snow White. They failed both frames of story telling. All they needed to do is pick one. This way they could have marketed for the correct audience. Instead we get this mess.
    13. Gratuitus Gotcha Moments
    14. Lack of show dont tell. Dialogs and flashbacks.

Xell Marvel still keeps their movies interesting due to them being in the MCU. Marvel didn't do anything so offensive that will turn ppeople off. Thor 3 I dislike. Inhumans was TV so it didn't affect the MCU or people good will towards Marvel. Marvel Studios has (for now) Kevin Feigne, which seems to love the universe Marvel is creating on screen. ...Solo trailer was shrouded in lifeless slick imagery (Lando looks like a pump from a 70’s flick, another dude in a Chewy suit, and a non Harrison Solo...No thanks). I believe it will make some respectable cash but since it was made and paid for twice it will be as close to financial failure as a big studio can get.
Disney knows ‘Solo’ was a mistake but their pride wouldn’t allow them to pull the project IMO.

    LIST OF MARKETING FAILS
1- Better than Empire Strikes Back ( hahaha, oh wait, are you serious? )
2- Rotten Tomatoes tomatometer starting at 94% ? ( wow, just wow )
3- Subvert your expecations = a good movie ( humkay... no. Have you heard of branding? )
4- Attack on the fan base. Negative response = haters. If you dont like the movie = racist and sexist ( are you nuts? )
5- Denial and double down of the Mary Sue criticism ( no humility, fail to instruct your actors on the interviews)
6- Drop in China and wallstreet
7- Making Mark Hamill participate and apologize in interviews of a movie he did not like ( this could have been avoided ).
8- Market a fairy tale movie for an audience who was a expecting an epic legendary style of story telling. (Pick your audience, you cannot ride two horses at the same time)
9- Not stoping Rian Johson from making "sassy" remarks on twitter.
10- "Let the past die" much more directed at the audience rather than the character of Rey. What past? she doesn´t know her past in order for her to let it go. Leting go of something is very different than letting something die. The past is very important and has it´s place... in the past. No closure for Rey and a slap on the fans´ faces.
