    I've been literally overwhelmed by requests to make this video (both of them). In it I tot up what it has cost me to buy and own a 2014 Audi R8 V8 manual which I bought privately in December 2018 with no warranty.
    Since making the video I've researched the car's value and Autotrader says £51,000 as a dealer retail price, how realistic this is in today's climate I wouldn't want to speculate (and luckily don't need to).
    Here is a link to me and this car on the "JayEmm on Cars" You Tube channel from 18/4/2020

    Thanks for the update! I've really enjoyed watching your videos and following you on your R8 journey. My dream became reality last year when I picked up an 2007 R8 v8 manual in July and its been spot on since. I've done about the same mileage as you so mechanically, found it to be really reliable. I did however have to lump quite a bit on bodywork repair and respray as it had the dreaded body corrosion. Every panel had issues so buyers don't forget to check in and around the wheel arches, bonnet and doors for signs of paint bubbling so you can cost it in. Once it sets in it only gets worse and its a strip, fix and respray of the each panel. I bought my R8 knowing it needed done so managed to compensate in the buying price. For giggles, I got Audi to quote me, they wanted almost £8k! A reliable local specailist bodyshop did the work to really high standard (including bumper respray and wheel refurb). So I'm down £4k now but it looks like it rolled out the factory yesterday. My R8 is 13 years old now, unbelievable. Re exhaust, it can be silly money and I'm sure thats down to the R8 tax... My car has the active control f1 exhaust from TopGear and it sounds ridiculously amazing! Completely stock when closed, thundering banshee when open via the remote fob. They are half the price of the competition but in my opinion, sound as good, if not better! Check them out and save yourself 2k. Waiting for lockdown to lift so I can take it for an oil change. I changed the sparks and Air filters myself using pocket money and plan to do a decarbonation of the intake valves this summer with walnut shell as I doubt its been done before over its 13 years and 50k miles. Buying a kit to do it myself, quoted £800 from a specialist to do it but I can buy everything that's needed to do the job for about 300. I might even make a video if it goes well! Keep updating us please and stay safe.

      Thanks for all that info David, priceless. Did you know about the corrosion on your car when you bought it? It's pretty common by all accounts on early cars, apparently McLarens and Astons are pretty bad too so it's not just Audi. The good thing about aluminium is that it doesn't necessarily come back of the bodyshop have prepped it thoroughly. £4k doesn't sound too bad and will have added that value back on the car easily. You are the second person to recommend Top Gear exhausts and the fact you say it's quiet when valves are closed means a lot. Make that video, sounds interesting! Thanks again and stay safe yourself 👍

    Thanks for your videos especially the R8 series. I bought a V8 manual in July 2018 so its been really interesting following your progress. Your experience has been very similar to mine even down to a leaky oil pipe (V common I understand). I think this is a great car to keep long term as they dont have too many common issues and feel special every time you drive. As for depreciation, only time will tell but as you say its not really relevant unless we are forced into parting with them. I do think the V8 manual has the best chance of the range due to its (rightly or wrongly) popularity over the RTronic. Lets look forward to an enjoyable long term ownership! I went for a Milltek non resonated exhaust btw and it completely transformed the driving experience. Im sure you will find similar. Cheers

    Loving the series Andrew, being a voyeur of the channel about as close to owning one as I’m likely to get. 😉 Informative as well as interesting as per normal. Having the knowledge, contacts and facilities, lifting gear etc, certainly helps in your cost savings and self-maintenance capability. Fixing that oil leak would have been much more challenging on axle stands say. Looking forward to the next instalment as always and watching for developments on the switchable exhaust system - an investment perhaps if the R8 is, as you say, a long-term purchase. Stay safe and well.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks again Darren. I'm not sure I have any useful contacts but lifting the car does help a lot. I've seen a lot of mainy US videos with people working on axle stands and while more time consuming you could definitely do the pipe if you wanted to. No job so far has been anything like as tough as a Mk5 Golf GTI thermostat swap or any cambelt change (which luckily the R8 never needs!). Looking after yourself and see you for the next one👍

      Glad you enjoyed it. Need to drive an 8P RS3 again to remember but they were a funny car, very prone to understeer, not developed all that well, had a propshaft that would explode when launch control used. Lots of character though, decent build quality and quick but a GTI Clubsport (with DCC) or GTI TCR would be the driver's choice due to superior chassis and pretty much as quick.

    Great update on this project car Andrew and it seems like such a smart purchase as it has the best of R8 fun with true ownership practicality unlike the V10 although their sound is melodic - hence can’t wait for an exhaust upgrade as any 4.2 v8 should be heard - just looked here in Oz for similar car and only 8 manuals for sale here and closest is a manual convertible 2013 for $175k AUD so your car is a bargain 👍 more videos soon 🥳

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Malcolm! I gather cars like this are roughly double the price in Aus, is that about right? V10 is indeed melodic but V8 has it's own strong personality and let's face it, maybe not so much in Aus but a V8 is still pretty exotic in Europe. I am surprised there are so many manuals out there, is Aus a mainly auto market like USA? More vids soon, promise 🙌

    • @malcolmscott4150
      @malcolmscott4150 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      volkswizard Supercars like the R8 are usually double price here - cheapest path into a v8 here is a new mustang at around $65k which is roughly same price as uk - we are very automatic focused with only a few niche manuals like the Fiesta st which sells here in very small numbers - Golf r’s and gti’s you see very few used manuals with DSG uptake around 80% due to large cities with lots of commuting and long distances - top selling cars here are 4 door diesel utes then the dreaded SUVs - running euro cars here often expensive for parts and service hence its great when you see someone such as yourself tinkering and modifying themselves as rare to see - 🤞more videos soon please

    Hi Andrew, great info.I would like to know how would you compare your time with the Clubsport S vs. the R8, which one is more exciting ( bang for buck ) are you using the R8 more than the Clubsport S?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clubsport S I think did 5000 miles in 2 years, this has done similar in 17 months. This is partly due to living somewhere since December which is more conducive to using cars like these but I prefer the R8 because it doesn't need to go on a racetrack to feel special, the CSS driven normally is just like any Golf. Driven hard on the road it's just like any GTI (or Cupra) only on track will you really feel the magic. And all the time you drive it the compromises over a normal car are apparent (no parking sensors, tyres that don't like standing water, road noise, impractical boot (can't have a big load bay like a Golf with seats folded), no spare wheel). And when you drive CSS on track, it's not tough enough due to weak clutch and brakes. Don't get me wrong CSS is amazing in a lot of ways but you don't get to enjoy those attributes often enough to justify the downsides.

      Similar age is 991? No experience of those. I had 996 and 997 because they were cheaper, now prices for 911s are roughly the same. The R8 has lost a lot recently, I hopefully caught just the tail end of the depreciation. Even though my car is a 2014 it's more 997 than 991 in feel but it's bigger than both of them. Early 991s have first gen EPAS which isn't too great. Pretty sure mine is hydraulic and all the better for it, better than Mk2 R8 too which is EPAS (and way better than Dynamic steering versions). Just buy the R8:)

    Always been interested in the Gen 1 R8’s but that old multimedia interface always put me off being the type of person who always listens to music via bluetooth from Spotify and the like. Can you do this on the facelifts when you say you can connect your phone or am I right in thinking it’s only through the Audi MMI cable?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AMI (Audi Music Interface) allows you to play music/audio from the phone whether it be streaming apps or download so it's much like Bluetooth but not wireless which is fine as it charges the phone. You also control it from the headunit although it's not perfect so hard to swap albums but tracks are OK.
      I got a £2 ebay extension cable as AMI lead is a too short and it also means I don't need to remove phone case to connect which isn't the case with the chunky AMI plug. Really it's only CAR PLAY that I miss now but a phone holder on dash would mitigate most of that.

    Hi there
    they say the V10 shuts off half the cylinders when at steady speed, ie highway....
    Hence, I would have thought it gets close to 30 on a long EU run, you dont think so? Or maybe only later V10s had this feature? Does the V8 have this feature?
    I am from Birmingham and looking at a manual one also, but currently in barcelona so cant move and the privately owned ones are about the same price as dealer ones...
    Ive never driven one, but I had a 718 S and found it boring as no noise and no manual..... We shall seeee

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only later V10 has cylinder on demand and the one I drove had it so probably not much use on the open road when you aren't off the gas much but better in cities where you are. It's just an emissions fiddle and like a lot of them has minimal effect in real world. Be interesting to know if the knew WLTP testing regime for emissions encourages CoD systems still as the cars are driven on the road for testing.

      volkswizard back in 07’ Audi sold a small hand full of them here in the US. Most all of them I can find on AutoTempest are high mileage 100,000+ for between $8K-$14K. It’s the same V10 that’s in both the R8 and the Lamborghini Hurcan, just down tuned. It’s shoehorned into them so that just to change an O2 sensor or a starter requires pulling the engine.

    I'm very relieved you went back to OEM-ish wheels. Good move. If you get the Zen exhaust what will you do about the four tips or can you get ones to match your dual-exit bumper? Finally, don't mention Paul Wallace et al; I'm in the same boat as you, and then some... Keep up the great content and thanks!

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! There's a lesson to be learned with those bronze wheels! The factory exhaust has 4 tips but they terminate before the round trims that are actually attached to the bumper. I think on the pre-facelift cars the tips were a bit longer and visible (before fakery became the norm). There are many benefits to being older I suppose but an R8 in your early 20s without bank of mum and dad funding is pretty cool, well done SOL!

      Thanks! In the recent JayEmm on cars video which me and the car were in, he did ask me that and the common issue which apparently is engine out job is air con pump failure but I suspect a good specialist (not an Audi Centre) won't need to remove engine and even if they did cost would be a lot less than a dealer. To mitigate risk I'd get aircon gas topped up every year and not worry.

    Could you maybe cover how you paid for this car. I cannot believe that it would be cash so it must have been a bank transfer but how did that work. Did you ask the bank to transfer the £50k and you sat in the vendors house until the funds arrived with him? Maybe it was on finance so you paid the finance and then got the car. Different on a £5k car where you can hand over cash but at this level it seems to be you give me the Kay and I’ll give you the cash / you give me the cash first and then ill give you the keys.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair point Craig. I flew up, agreed to buy, left a deposit by bank transfer there and then and got a receipt on headed paper asking for balance due. He had to MOT it so once passed I am pretty sure I sent the balance over on the day before I travelled by train to collect. I'd been to the address on V5 and inside the house and home office of the owner so I was OK about legitimacy and I do this all the time though not for £50k. It's not for the faint hearted TBH that's why lumpy cars like this on Autotrader usually sell to dealers. I didn't finance it, 18 years ago I started with about £40k to buy and sell cars, from working six days a week for all that time and living a very modest lifestyle in many ways (and no kids by choice) this has increased like a savings account and gradually I've saved enough for my weekend cars to go up from £5k to £50k largely helped by none of them losing much money (8L S3, Audi Cabriolet(s), B5 S4 Avant then mainly B5 and B7 RS4s, 996 and 997 911s, a Clubsport S that I got every penny back on after nearly 2 years. Even a Golf R I bought new just about broke even thanks to a profitable px against it). I got into selling cars to indulge myself while making a living but looking back I wish I'd done something else (property?) and kept cars as a hobby as effort vs profit if you are as straight as me is tiring. Hope that answers your question :).

    • @craigrobertson7938
      @craigrobertson7938 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that. I used to work in a bank and there was a main dealer that bought cars in London to bring north. They would get a bank draft for most of the cost and then a few thousand in cash to cover for haggling or damage that needed sorting like wheels. Of course bank drafts are no longer seen as being so strong due to the counterfeits. I had fancied an R8 and sat in one whilst my A6 was being serviced. For my 6’5’ frame it was a bit tight but that is not unusual. Thanks for coming back.
