*TO AVOID CONFUSION, PLEASE SIMPLY CONSIDER THIS VIDEO AS A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE OLD OEM AIR FILTERS & NEW ITG AIR FILTERS AS THAT IS EFFECTIVELY WHAT YOU'D BE DOING IF YOU REPLACED YOURS. I CAN'T AFFORD TO SPEND £200 ON TWO NEW OEM AIR FILTERS FROM AUDI TO DO A SCIENTIFIC COMPARISON & THEN CHUCK THEM IN THE BIN, IF YOU WANT TO SUPPLY THEM, THEN I'LL GLADLY GIVE IT ANOTHER GO BUT I AM CONFIDENT THE CONCLUSION WOULD BE NO DIFFERENT. THERE IS LITTLE OR NO DIFFERENCE IN PRICE, SO EVEN IF THE ITG GAINS ARE MINIMAL THEY ARE STILL GAINS & DON'T FORGET, THEY CAN BE CLEANED & REUSED INDEFINITELY*
In this non-sponsored video I replace the original 6 year old air filters in Project R8 with a performance pair from Coventry based manufacturer ITG

The normally aspirated V8 in the R8 needs all the help it can get to perform and fitting free flow air filters is a well trodden path.
Rather than just offer a 'seat-of-the-pants' conclusion I wanted to measure the amount of air going into the the engine using diagnostic software to see if there was a difference so two before-and-after test runs were performed with VCDS software logging the air mass data. The original air filters were not brand new by any means but the consistency of the data recorded would suggest this didn't make any difference & any restrictions to flow were elsewhere in the engine.
Two runs were made with each filter to minimise the effect of heat soak from idling while filming in the car at idle, the second was a few miles later. Normally aspirated cars like this one aren't as affected by heat soak as turbo cars, as the air goes straight in without running through pipes and hoses that get very hot and link turbos, intercoolers and throttles.
I also offer my opinion on the effect the filters have on driveability using my own well worn 'seat-of-the-pants' . Somewhat unexpectedly I was also able to quickly come to a very distinct conclusion when it comes to their effect on fuel economy though I only discovered it on arrival at home so had to film it on my phone which seems to have issues recording audio (hopefully this clunkiness will confirm that this was unstaged and totally unexpected as I never use a phone to film by choice). This unexpected result is definitely not typical of a standard V8 R8 so I am 100% confident it is down to the ITG filters.
Watch the video right to the end for the results, I've kept it short and sweet at 14 mins total. The only area I didn't make clear was noise. Like the OEM filters, the ITG filters sit in an airbox to keep them away from the hot air in the engine bay and all that is right at the back of the engine behind a very solid bulkhead so if there is any difference, it's not discernible inside the car.
The official line from ITG is that my kit was missing the required hardware to secure the filters to the MAF sensor bodies. This is a one-off and other kits will include them.
The t-shirt worn in the video is available here (was not supplied FOC to me):

This video was filmed during the time when social distancing measures set out by the UK Government were in force. I don't believe I have fallen foul of any rules because a) It was filmed at work which I am allowed to attend (see below, it's a common misconception that non-essential workers can't go to work but when you are not being paid to stay at home, you have to know the rules intimately) b) Any driving shown originated and terminated at the work premises c) the vehicle used is a company vehicle registered at the business address d) My only source of income right now is TH-cam revenue so this is work and I pay tax on it e) This work is my only source of income so trust me you don't get more essential than thatf) Nobody else was involved in the filming or got within 2 metres of me (in fact I didn't see a soul all day which is pretty normal) g) I can't do this from home, tried to drive it around the garden but I couldn't get above 2 mph.
"5. I’m not a critical worker and I can’t work from home. What should I do?
If you cannot work from home then you can still travel to work. This is consistent with the Chief Medical Officer’s advice.
Critical workers are those who can still take their children to school or childcare. This critical worker definition does not affect whether or not you can travel to work - if you are not a critical worker, you may still travel to work provided you cannot work from home."
