in Art school sure, but I remember 7 years ago in secondary school
I didnt have enough colours that day so I couldnt draw what I wanted, it ended up looking really empty and desaturated
my art teacher did not give constructive feedback, just proceed to shame me infront of the whole class
that traumatized me to this day

The difference is that a teacher will help u improve but your secondary school teacher completely insulted u. Sometimes critique will help u and some sometimes not. But that is just my opinion at the end of the day.

@@Akshitasingh1212yup not all critique will be constructive or beneficial, ie just bc someone suggested taking the piece in a different direction doesnt mean you have to listen. having input/hearing other opinions does help if constructive.

Thats true that she says getting a feedback from proffesional artist ( your proffesor for example)is one of the pros of going to artschool and do prove as artist its neccesary. But one important thing is to understand that not all feedback that professors might say is always beneficial and helpful for your personal goals as artist, so its important also select what critique is useful for you as artist and what is just opinion. As someone with three art degrees i had also proffesors back in artschool who just tried to turn my painting style into theirs style instead of guiding me to that style i was looking. It was very stressful and confusion for me personally and even a certain point i actually got lost as artist because of that. So its also important to know as artist what critique your are looking not to get lost in progress.

Once I reframed crits to be they’re trying to help me make this piece the best it can be, I started enjoying crits and got really good at taking and giving criticism. It’s so helpful!!

I do fashion design not Art but this is the same. It’s one of the most valuable things art/fashion school offers. Furthermore, sometimes you have a vague idea of where you want your style and project to go but no clue how to get there. Your tutors have years of experience and in my experience usually know how to understand the direction you want to take and help get you there. On the other hand sometimes you have a too precise idea of where you want to go and then they will interfere and help you consider more angles. Additionally I think sometimes it’s just nice to have some reassurance especially when like for fashion or character design you go through 50-100 iterations, it can get overwhelming. Lastly, this might be personal because I have been incredibly blessed with only ever having good tutors (with the exception of 1) but my tutors often don’t actually personally enjoy my style, or concept, or design HOWEVER they always have remained incredibly objective and not let their taste bleed into their feedback. They genuinely try to understand what I want and where I want to go and try to give advice that they think will help me get there. And that is something a regular person in your life cannot give you. That is something that takes a lot of experience both as a teacher but also as an artist.
In the end I know for certain that I would have never improved this much without my tutors. And this is not me advertising for art school, it’s just my personal experience

This is pretty similar to architecture (I went but didn't finish) and to this day I find it useful to apply the kind of discipline that was expected of me in the design studio even though I'm currently pursuing a degree in a field that's not architecture or art. Not gonna lie I kinda miss being roasted by my lecturers/instructors/professors despite having literally cried in front of one of them because I was having big problems with my work back then. I feel like the value of those feedback was overshadowed by my anxiety and I didn't get to fully appreciate what they have to say for me to improve.

I think fashion design is also a creative, artistic career, so I think you can count it as art :)
And I agree with all your points! Those kinds of people can really help you a lot on your journey when they genuinely care about you.

@@spam-el3ee no no no it 100% is art that’s not what I meant. Just when you tell people “I study art” they are gonna think stuff like painting, illustration, sculpture etc. and not fashion

    100% this!!!
Feedback and critique are so important! I didn't go to art school for financial reasons, but I found a really good junior college with an amazing art department and professors. I've been working as a character artist in the kid's toys industry for 5 years now, and I owe a lot to my mentors.
