What I’ve learned as an artist is that the only artist I should compare my own art to is my own. I’ve learned to turn my jealousy towards other artists into pride for how amazing they are doing. Instead of looking at their art and boiling inside, I look at their art and try to pick out what I like about it and maybe what I don’t. Y’all. She’s critiquing her own portfolio. Also, long arms are a problem as it might look off to the viewer. While yes, you can break the model in order to fit the aesthetic, some artists don’t want to do that.
i noticed through this video that my art has been effected by my ocd a little too much lmao i do understand your frustrations when you think the characters looks flat, or the dynamics arent pushing out enough- but thats part of the learning process! and starting there is ohhh so much easier than starting with constantly thinking about something being consistent, "shapey" enough, showing personality, or making sense in anatomy terms. you grew from not thinking about these things, at least not all the time, and its what made your art so much better. but i cant improve from where i am because im scared to get out of my comfort zone of things not always being the same as my other drawings. really sucks but i think itll be better this year this comment is probably worded wrong so my bad if no one understands LOL

There's nothing wrong with admitting your earlier work wasn't great, it just means that you've improved as an artist. Keeping your earlier works is a good thing because it could serve as a reminder of that, or as an inspiration for future projects. For example: when you listed the flaws of the model sheets of Quinn and V, you could update their designs to your current art style for a possible sequel to "Bang Bang!"
It'd be cool to see a personas/pfps over the years sorta comparison! Just realized the channel pfp changed and I think it'd be fun to see the evolution 🥺
The only people we should ever bully, and still with love, is our past selves, because it shows our improvement and what we understand now, along with allowing a bit of fun meanness haha!
came from a short and as someone who wants to be an animator / visual designer in the future this is really helpful to watch and a fun video overall :)
it's important to acknowledge our skills and know our limit but that doesn't mean we can't improve most artist are stuck thinking that they are not good enough or can't be as good as that one specific artist, but i have a strong believe that you are special and even if you don't realize it someone is already looking up to you, so be creative
I remember something i had seen in the past (cant remember where) of a diagram that represent your taste in art (the way you want your art to look like) and your current skill. The shape that you ended up with is a diagonal dna looking lines and it really hits me in the feels when i think about it. At first you feel like your art is never good, and then you start to see improvements and at some point it reached a peak at that time and you start to feel like you haven't made any progress and after a while you start feeling like your art is not good again but in truth your art taste are just setting the bar higher for yourself Hearing the first few sentence of this video reminds me of that rut when i was just starting to learn art a little more seriously and how its important to never stop even if it feels like you feet are knee deep in wet sand. That was a hefty rant lol
I'd love to see more from the Redwood High characters, and hope you don't leave them to languish in the portfolio! Maybe you could even add in a Jackie equivalent for your "dream boy guitar player" fiance so the preppier twin has a bit of competition.
Keep in mind that art is subjective! You can choose if you like or not. Its ok not to like your art as its human, but keep in mind that even if you don't like your art that doesn't mean other people wont. You really inspired me to do art. You're amazing!!!
I have also been in a bit of an art slump. Havent drawn too much this last year, and because of it, I'm hella rusty. It happens. Love your art tho, the old and new 🥰 You inspire me to get back to it! And push myself to really rework my character designs, too. So, thanks for that! :)
I've been feeling very bad about my portfolio lately (switching industries, so it's v e r y chaotic). This video has encouraged me to 'roast' myself a bit, but like in a chill way, to get my portfolio together. Thank you ❤
as someone currently working on my senior thesis character design portfolio this is suuuuper helpful to see!! it's giving me a lot to think about as i make those last few pieces and put on the finishing touches. thank you for the great video!!
Remember everyone it’s a good thing when you feel a little cringey about things you did or said in the past. It means you’re growing as a person and learning from it.
the fact that you're ablw to immediately spot mistakes in your old art and also know how to fix it, and how to make it look better- it shows how damn far you've come. and you're gonna go even farther. I hope you aren't feeling as down in the dumps about your art now. if you still are though- think of it this way. the more "bad" art you make, the more art you have to roast a few years later !!
14:19 OMG! I like this character so much! She looks kinda similar to some ethnicities/cultures of natives of Brazil. Maybe a gurani or a caiapó? I'm not sure, I just know this look is wonderful! I would only have recommended that you research a little more about body paintings, as they have meaning and variations according to tribe and ethnicity, but whatever 😅
lol, I enjoyed this so much, Jackie. And I tried to think of what I would have critiqued with this portfolio as you were scrolling through it, and I found that I kept going, “Aw, that’s cool!” most of the time. HAHA. So clearly, I’m gonna say that’s why you were, indeed, hired. Haha. I’d give it an 8/10 or a 9/10! We’re docking the points for the vis dev pieces you didn’t need (but were still cool, haha). That’s definite B+ territory!! Loved it! Hahah.
You're very talented. You have a great personality. And I like you. We all have down days, but you're great and a great artist. I'm really wowed by your skills.
Hi Jackie I started taking your course about a week ago and the course came out more than a month ago. You're one of my main inspirations for art and your videos have helped me learn a lot!
I remember something i had seen in the past (cant remember where) of a diagram that represent your taste in art (the way you want your art to look like) and your current skill.
The shape that you ended up with is a diagonal dna looking lines and it really hits me in the feels when i think about it. At first you feel like your art is never good, and then you start to see improvements and at some point it reached a peak at that time and you start to feel like you haven't made any progress and after a while you start feeling like your art is not good again but in truth your art taste are just setting the bar higher for yourself
Hearing the first few sentence of this video reminds me of that rut when i was just starting to learn art a little more seriously and how its important to never stop even if it feels like you feet are knee deep in wet sand.
That was a hefty rant lol
When talking about Redwood High guitar boy, I was so unprepared for the flex that he became your FIANCE. I gasped. Love your work, Jackie.
Seeing other peoples portfolio freaking inspires me omg
I love how ur mic is connected to spiderpunk 😍
I just see it as it being the style and it works.
This is so amazing to see. Your videos really help boost my confidence with my own work, your so insightful and inspirational
PLEASE THE BRUNO PIC AT 0:43 LMAOO
the fact that you're ablw to immediately spot mistakes in your old art and also know how to fix it, and how to make it look better- it shows how damn far you've come. and you're gonna go even farther. I hope you aren't feeling as down in the dumps about your art now. if you still are though- think of it this way. the more "bad" art you make, the more art you have to roast a few years later !!
I didnt realize this was your animation!! I love this so much
Your art style reminds me of Carmen sandiego and I love it so much
Really? Her old art style reminded me a lot of TDI! So cool to see things that may have inspired her!
honestly i really liked all the flat, straight edges. i think it just made the style more consistent
Totally relatable feeling, great video Jackie
the amount of times I watched that video is uncountable I loved it so much. 😔❤
SHE GOT THE BOY!!!
Its funny to think that someone who I lookup to, shares the same emotions. I guess the grind never stops huh? ;)
lol, I enjoyed this so much, Jackie. Loved it! Hahah.
It would be so cool if you made an "cartoony" anatomy tutorial
You're very talented. You have a great personality. And I like you. We all have down days, but you're great and a great artist. I'm really wowed by your skills.
12:13 Omg how cute!!!
the v charecter exploration’s lips 😧
0:11 I think its the winter hun..lack of sun isnt realy good for anyone xdd
but srsly great advice to roast your past art, when your feeling down!
Hi Jackie I started taking your course about a week ago and the course came out more than a month ago. I've seen that more recent posts on the tasks rarely have any feedback on it not from you nor other people that are taking the course. I absolutely understand this i mean you are not gonna be as active after a bit of time but many have started the course recently and I would be so greatful if you would be able to take some time and give some more feedback. Love your work!❤
Ugh am I kind of obsessed with the Pocahontas design 😬😬
imagine vivienne medrano and her going in school together couse the furst one gives me the vibe of vivienne's first style, btw you draw beautifully
I loved this short film forever never knew you’re the one that designed it! Would love any animation tips 💖✨😭
I love how she is “roasting” but im here like…? That’s much more than what I can do
Total Island drama ah style. Love it
It’s so interesting to see you criticize your old character designs for the short film that truly made me love and appreciate animation which led to me know wanting to pursue animation as a career
I remember watching your film on TH-cam, several times acctually, i liked it a lot
Amo tus videos siempre me ayudan a mejorar 😭❤
Honestly you're so pretty i just kept getting lost looking at you, I love your art too.
i looved the short film from you!
I love that excellent artists feel just the same as every other artist ❤
Oh that was really good. I’m just about to make my portfolio for game art so I’ll try to not have to much filler and try to show my varied skills
