Clint Black is not only a superb songwriter and lyricist, he is a role model to emulate. I have never heard even a rumor of scandal regarding his professional or personal life, and he serves as an example for being a loving husband and father. Congratulations Clint and thank you! Your music and character will live on.

I had the pleasure of talking to Clint on the phone right after this song came out, as an interview for a magazine I was working for. He was so humble and polite, the perfect country gentleman. I'm not sure if this country is still making men like him. He wrote the story about a real personal experience, where even though the relationship had ended, he could see the positive force it had been in his life. I hope life is still treating him well all these years later.

One of the things I love about Clint’s songs is that he doesn’t need to fill it with bs. He sings a couple verses with a kick ass chorus and it leaves you wanting more. As a good artist should.

@Official Clint Black I was the guy who stepped in with one of your relatives to do some electrical work at a Wall Mart. Somebody made a terrible mistake and when I connected the cable the contactor blew up in my face. I was well cared for although I could not see but thank God that was just temporary. When I refused to sue or settle a car was sent for me and took me to your bar for a private party for Lisa's Birth Day and when she couldn't make the date you went to her. That is a night I'll never forget and yeah I'll never smoke weed with Willie again.

Remembering Craig 20 years after I left him~ Thank you for sharing this song with me many years ago before I left. We were special too~ I always want you to be happy and have love~ I am sorry I wasn't your perfect match, but we did kick ass and we did have many victories. I am sorry I had to leave you~ but I knew you would do better with a different mate, and am so glad you did. I prayed so very hard that you would find your angel girl~ I am glad that the prayers were answered and for the time I spent with you~ Hope you are happier now~ I wish you all the Best!! Craig Mayfield~ You still hold a special part of my heart~ We just were thrown together, and did our best, and it was good! I know you are a hard worker and passionate about life, and so am I, we just were star crossed and were not meant to stay together forever. I don't hold that against you, and I hope you don't hold it against me. I am happy for the time we had together. Thank you and you were a lot of fun and happiness for me~ You put up with me when I came down sick, and you were a big support. I will never forget that. I send you all my best and hope maybe one day we can talk again and share a few happy moments of memories~ Keep trucking on~ I am doing my best and hope you can remember some of our best times.

Instrumentation, lyrics, arrangements are the best in the business. He ignored what execs wanted him to be. Kenny and Tim and Toby (whom I still like a lot) followed more of a commercial appeal and created a certain image for themselves and Clint stayed his course and disregarded what anyone thought. All the way into the 2000s and his newest album that is about three years old. Not caring about record sales and sold-out stadiums. Most of his lyrics aren’t about the country life, either. They’re about thinkin’, time, “state of mind”, and cerebral concepts. Most underrated by far. Compositions and instrumentation are unmatched. And that voice and range! There will never be another CB! He killed Garth at the awards after their first album and Garth was probably crying and then turned up the marketing machine and stadium shows. He had some gems for sure but lyrics (writes his own), instrumentation, voice, compositions, Clint is the most underrated by a million miles. Best there was or is imo. Hayden is my favorite guitar player ever. And his albums since the 90’s are top notch and overlooked. Sad. Still touring hard!

Loved Clint from the first time I heard him. Always will. Part of the great "Class of '89" who helped define Country in the '90s, which remains for me, the best country ever because of the extraordinary caliber of the songwriting.
Love the '60 Ford pickup in the video as well. My dad was a masonry contractor and I grew up around trucks. In addition to a bunch of Internationals, (GREAT trucks but that's another story) we had a '57 Ford F-350 long bed pickup, a '58 F-600 dump truck and a '59 F-100 short bed pickup. How well I remember that cab and that three-on-the tree shifter!

What do you say when it's over?
I don't know if I should say anything at all
One day we're rollin' in the clover
Next thing, you know, we take the fall
Still, I think about the years since I first met you
And the way it might have been without you here
I don't know if words from me can still upset you
But I've just gotta make this memory stand clear
I know I'm leavin' here a better man
    For knowin' you this way
Things I couldn't do before now I think I can
And I'm leavin' here a better man
    I guess, I always knew I couldn't hold you
But I'd never be the one to set you free
Just like some old nursery rhyme your Mama told you
You still believe in some old, 'Meant to be'
Still, I'm leavin' here a better man
    For knowin' you this way
Things I couldn't do before now I think I can
And I'm leavin' here a better man
Yes, I'm leavin' here a better man
    For knowin' you this way
Things I couldn't do before now I know I can

Country music from the 90s wasn't really ruined as much. It was more the 2000s when Country Music was ruined because It doesn't sound like the 90s or 80s Country. It sounds like dance music more than Country. Some from the 2000s wear Cowboy Hats like Justin Moore, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton sometimes does, Lainey Wilson, Miranda Lambert, and Jon Pardi. Those all look like their Country but Country depends on how it's played not on how they look. Garth Brooks from my understanding was the only Country Singer to ruin Country Music in the 90s because he mixed the genre with other genres. And that's called Neotraditional Country. Neotraditional Country from my understanding is a Country tune mixed with other genres. Like Country was changed in the 90s pretty much because in the 90s Country is mixed with other genres and it's not supposed to be that way it's supposed to be just plain Country. This Country Song is how it's supposed to be because this song was recorded in 1989. If it's a Country Song from the 80s it's how it's supposed to be. It was sang by the heart in the 80s Country because they sang Country to cross their heart like there's a song by George Strait I cross my heart. but now from the 90s and 2000s it's sang by the wallet because they sing them for money. I like Country Like George Strait. Because George Strait is more from the 80s. George Strait has some Country Songs from the 90s and 2000s but he still does it from the heart now.
