Metheny is a prodigy, started playing with big names from a young age and taught at the Berklee College of Music. Played with Jaco Pastorius, Paul Bley, Joni Mitchell etc etc. I was lucky enough to see him for the first time in ATL when I was like 6 or 7 years old. My very first concert before that was Chick Corea
You had such a lucky childhood. I only got into the PMG when I was in college, and sadly I've never gotten to see them in concert (RIP Lyle Mays). The Way Up came out when I graduated from College, and it was my first PMG purchase. I've since made up for lost time and perused through as much of the discography as possible
I was lucky to see Pat Metheny Group in concert, I took my 16 year old daughter with me …….. the concert was intense !!!!! My daughter looked at me and couldn’t believe Someone could play the guitar the way Pat does !!!’ INTENSE. Go see him, you will be In heaven !!!!!!!!
Some people's brains just can't handle going on a long slow soundscape journey. Mine sure as hell can. This music comes from a time when more people used to listen to music alone, sitting in a chair with your eyes closed. This is why hifi was a more popular hobby in the 70's and 80's.
Pat is my favorite. I don't know anyone else who knows anything about him so it's great watching people on the Internet enjoy him. I've seen him in concert 13 times!
Pat Metheny, both alone and especially in collaboration with Lyle Mays, will eventually be regarded as the foremost musical composer of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His imagination, elegance of composition, mastery of texture and timbre, exquisite taste, and nearly boundless range of musical influences is totally unparalleled in contemporary music. Pat Metheny is our living Da Vinci of music.
Poor Dee, looked like it was tough for her to make it through this one. Pat is a guitar genius and a visionary in jazz, jazz fusion and world music, incorporating sounds from all over the world into his music. Peter Gabriel does the same thing. His live performances are unforgettable. Lyle Mays, his long time collaborator and pianist passed away a little over 2 years ago. 🙏 The Pat Metheny Group sound is not for everyone but repeated listens to his music will make you appreciate him, that and his 20 Grammy awards. 🎸❤️✌️
Utterly incapable of recognizing that every instrument (and vocal) is on a skill level very few will ever reach. Then there is the complexity of the actual composition. This is genius.
The best thing about this song are the changes and transitions. Especially if you've listened to it hundreds of times like I have. Anticipating the changes is what makes it so great. You know what's coming and you know where it's going. And you can't wait for it to get there.
You have just scratched the surface of the world of Pat - jazz, fusion, world. But above all, he is a Jazz genius. Can’t go wrong with any of his stuff. For a change of pace, check out his collaboration with Ornette Coleman, “Song X”.
What the heck is wrong with this girl? Just pay attention! This is something beautiful. Would you go to a redwood grove, or the ocean, and complain about them not “doing” something? For heaven’s sake, when I was only 10, it never bothered me a bit to lie on the floor for an hour, getting lost in my earphones, letting the drama of the music as it built at whatever pace it pleased. It’s astonishing and sad to see the damage people have done to their own ability to just listen and let music happen.
Minuano is a wind that blows in Brazil. Pat Metheny went to my High School. Or more correctly, I went to his. He graduated in 73, I got there in 75. But I did get to run into him once back in 79. I was making a delivery to his grandmother's place and he came walking in. She was so excited he had come to visit. Been following his career since then.
Metheny and Mays painted in watercolors and pastels. To quote a character from the old Babylon 5 series - "A moment of perfect beauty". Always amazes me how this piece can be so calm and soothing, yet urgent at the same time.
You might like to listen to Joni Mitchell Amelia Live. Metheny has a terrific guitar solo. Mitchell like Steely Dan was playing with great jazz players, and Amelia is a beautiful song.

His performance with Het Metropole Orchestra at North Sea Jazz Fest is a video worth seeing/hearing. "Are You Going With Me?" is just amazing. (Watch Sax and Trombones expressions behind him during his solo...so good.)
PAT METHENY is always my choice when I'm motoring down the Interstates out west with my wife, watching America slide by the windshield. Give a listen to "Slip Away", "Eighteen", "Phase Dance", "Facing West" - all great tunes for road trips. Somehow, the speedometer always magically reads 80 mph+ when a Metheny song comes on! Another group in the same vein that you guys might like is Acoustic Alchemy. "Reference Point", "Road Dogs", "Same Road, Same Reason", "Say Yeah"...... (somebody stop me!). Just check 'em out!
San Lorenzo is my favorite but this is my second favorite by Pat Matheny group! Rip Lyle Mays🌻 listen to your man relax stay in the moment and enjoy!✌️🤩
Spent many a long hours in my room breaking down Pat (among others) trying to play close enough for a gig or catch a technique to improve. Just Love his stuff. Pat has played with most of the masters in the Jazz realm. I would consider him one of those people. Love the reaction guys and thanks for posting a Jazz reaction (overlooked by todays reactors in my opinion). As always stay safe and much love guys.
Two other songs on this album to check out are “Third Wind,” and “Last Train Home.” This was the start of Pat’s foray into Brazilian rhythms. The drummer is the great Paul Wertico, who played in the PMG for many years.
'I think it might be going in a jazz direction', sigh, dude. Open your ears, this is jazz all day long. Pat is a renowned jazz guitarist. Some of her early comments, I can't even comprehend.
Had to comment twice! Lol I remember buying this on cassette and popping it in and wanting to take a long drive! And it’s kind of what I did with my cousin. We left the city and headed upstate NY! Great driving music! Also look at the album cover! It’s Brazilian samba inspired! God this band is so good! Pat is a guitar god! Paul wartico is on drums! He plays those symbols so subtly! Killer
I've never missed a Pat Metheny concert in the Bay Area, ever! Seeing the Pat Metheny Group live is something amazing, and not something to yawn at, for sure.Pat has used some of the greatest drummers in modern jazz music - Dan Gottlieb, Paul Wertico, Antonio Sanchez! He and Lyle Mays can go from atmospheric to straight ahead jazz, to rock influenced jazz. If you are ready, prepare yourself to go on a real musical journey. 20 different Grammy's in 10 different categories. Who does that? RIP Lyle!
Just subscribed specifically because you reacted to Pat Metheny. He has been nominated and won more grammy awards than most musicians...nominated 38 times and won 20. He has won grammys in 10 different categories, more than anyone else. A true musical genius.
Pat always gets my attention. Nicely done. His amazing partner/pianist Lyle Mayes passed a few yrs ago, however his contributions to music in general was huge. Try anything from “American Garage” forward. It’s a remarkable catalog. 🤘😎 Shout out for this one.

He's not for everybody BUT if you are a TRUE music lover, it will be love at 3rd sight. That's because most of the compositions are too complex to fully get and appreciate at first listen. You know you that you love it but you're not yet sure exactly why. Finally, I would suggest you listen to Pat for your own pleasure. He'll likely not be appreciated by the casual listeners. PS Let your beloved know that Metheny has done numerous movie scores.
Can somebody help? is the six eight in the title mean it is in 6/8 time? I think I'd need indica to really get with the vibe of this tune, which is my normal mellow Jazz reaction. I guess I'm a blues/rocker til the day I ascend to a higher plane.

Great, young people have a lot of appreciation. Thank you for that. We can all be happy to have been able to experience Pat and Lyle in this century. There won't be anything better for a long time (or forever).
Such joy....i have listened to him a lot since 1977..imo a top 19 all time guitarist..Chod ,would love to see you guys react to the pat metheny group doing the song April Joy
Cool that you did this piece. I've been a Pat Metheny fan since 1981. Seen him in concert 4 times over the years. Actually got to talk with him briefly at one of them. I simply love his music. Your girl didn't seem to like it nearly as much as you but I couldn't take my eyes off of her. With respect sir, she is gorgeous. Thanks for the video.
Song for Bilbao, watch the TH-cam video to see the concert and every other Pat Metheny song is 🔥. Pat wrote several movie themes. The rabbit hole is huge Pat is now over 70 years old, and started when he was 16 in Kansas City…a true Jazz genius! Listen to his 2021 release…From This Place…
I saw the PMG open a show years ago with this song. Imagine a large pool deck with about 1000 people watching them from across a hotel pool on a hot summer afternoon in Sacramento. They were as casually dressed for the environment. The sun and heat turned to dusk and the group kept playing, then the dusk turned to night but they kept playing. Late night still more. You could tell they wanted to be there and loved playing in such a casual spot. Finally after playing for hours a hours they had to stop and we had been given an experience I think even surprised them. Mays even smiled most of the time. One of the best days of my life due to and shared with The Pat Metheny Group. I bet even he still remembers that day. One of those days it all lined up. It's what we live for.
Now you get to peruse the discography of Pat Metheny and the PMG. Lots of wonderful gems whichever format he's playing in (Group, Trio, Quartet, Duet or even solo). He has very beautiful melancholic pieces, best of which is September 15th (in honour of Bill Evans). That would be a great piece for you to sample. And when you're ready for it, the PMG magnus opus is none other than "The Way Up". Great reaction guys
This is straight jazz but with a very modern take. Pat Metheny was considered one of the leading guitarists of his time. He played for a while with Joni Mitchell when she was touring. He recorded on a label called ECM Records and anything on that label is worth a listen. Anyone who was anyone did records for ECM and to me they were the Blue Note of our time (70's to the present).
There is a lot of excellent Pat Metheny Group music. Pretty much every album and song the group recorded is good. You might want to check out the album "We Live Here."
Jazz guitar and "world music" top tier genius mixing Jazz, Latin, and Latin fusion. All of his records are beautiful and will take you somewhere else! Active since 1974 he has three gold albums, twenty Grammys. and the only person to win Grammys in ten categories.
Amicalement Guy
Yep, a distinctive thing in Pat Metheny’s music is the frequent addition of wordless vocals to various instrumental melody lines. Very cool and instantly recognizable effect. 🥰
This piece is a one-of-a-kind experience when you see it in concert and I highly recommend that she look up the Wikipedia page on Pat Metheny to understand the type of influence he has had on music and jazz in particular eventually she will have that the light comes on moment for her and it will never be the same., Just ask anyone who has listened to Pat for the first time and then listened again later, they all had that moment of going from confusion to enlightenment to self-discovery to Joy listening to this genius at work
This is music that you just don't listen with your ears and soul...but you also see it with your mind. PMG's music transfers you to a beautiful painting with story and emotions in it. With PMG's music, you simply put your headphones, close your eyes, and you can experience absolute beauty without anything else.
@@timmiller5913 According to the album notes, Ledford and Blamires were just vocals. If you watch videos of PMG playing Minuano you can see Mays playing the horns on his MIDI'd piano.
I stumbled across PMG when I was about 12 when a family friend gave me a cassette coz he had upgraded to CDs. Still Life Talking was the album and this is the first song. No looking back since then! Pat and Lyle were always on a different level
Yes, Pat's music can be really cinematic, GREAT for road trips. If you have the chance to see him play live, don't miss it, it may just change your life, it sure changed mine.
Mon guitariste préféré, mais Méthény est plus qu'un simple guitariste, ne pas oublier Lyle Mays qui a énormément contribué à l'essor du Pat Méthény Group...
Great album and choice for the first of Pat's 'Brazilian Phase' of music ... but I think 'First Circle' is another level altogether. The live version on TH-cam is great too.
Pat and Lyle and colleagues are amongst the top Jazz - or whatever their music maybe called in the future - musicians at the last quarter of the 20th into the 21st century. Outstandig, beautiful, and very original and unique! They will be remembered like Miles Davis, Frank Zappa and the likes.
This probably some of the best music on the planet
The First Circle. You will not be disappointed.

This song is GENIUS. Pat and Lyle are geniuses. Period.
20+ Grammys. I’ve lost count. Pat Metheny is not just the finest guitarist on the planet, the PMG is the height of what music can be.
Legendary composer of music that will take you places you never thought possible
This dude "gets it" - I can tell just watching his face.
That album is absolute PURE MAGIC !!
This album, and the one that followed, Letter From Home, helped get me through some rough times.

The rabbit hole is huge
Pat is now over 70 years old, and started when he was 16 in Kansas City…a true Jazz genius!
Listen to his 2021 release…From This Place…
Pat's not quite 70 yet. I believe he was born in 1954.
Pat is 68 …… exactly my age
Sorry for the wrong info on Pat’s age… in fact he and his music are timeless!
Metheny and Mayes is a perfect match. This piece is definitely one of my favs…
It's good to catch the live performances of these tunes where you can actually see the musicians play.
Take a listen to Last Train Home.
Keep watching Dirty Loops. Congratulacion from Spain.
You have to watch the video of Pat playing The Sound of Water on his Picasso guitar.
The melody is pure genius. Its like a nursery rhyme on top of a very intense rhythm track. And a 6/8 latin groove to boot!
We used to listen to this album when we were on tour so relaxing like being in musical heaven fantastic ❤❤❤❤
Yep, a distinctive thing in Pat Metheny’s music is the frequent addition of wordless vocals to various instrumental melody lines.
Very cool and instantly recognizable effect. 🥰
This piece is a one-of-a-kind experience when you see it in concert and I highly recommend that she look up the Wikipedia page on Pat Metheny to understand the type of influence he has had on music and jazz in particular eventually she will have that the light comes on moment for her and it will never be the same., Just ask anyone who has listened to Pat for the first time and then listened again later, they all had that moment of going from confusion to enlightenment to self-discovery to Joy listening to this genius at work
He is excellent in concert as well !!!!
It is jazz.
This is music that you just don't listen with your ears and soul...but you also see it with your mind. PMG's music transfers you to a beautiful painting with story and emotions in it.
With PMG's music, you simply put your headphones, close your eyes, and you can experience absolute beauty without anything else.
The horns were Lyle Mays on synth.
Horns were played by David Blamires and Mark Ledford.
@@timmiller5913 According to the album notes, Ledford and Blamires were just vocals. If you watch videos of PMG playing Minuano you can see Mays playing the horns on his MIDI'd piano.
I've heard plenty of Metheny over the years ... never heard this one. Neat.
If you go down this rabbit hole please check out Simon Phillips band Protocol
Welcome to the world of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays … their songbook is the best in jazz, it’s due respect to Chick, Herbie, etc …
welcome to the ride....enjoy
I stumbled across PMG when I was about 12 when a family friend gave me a cassette coz he had upgraded to CDs. Still Life Talking was the album and this is the first song. No looking back since then! Pat and Lyle were always on a different level
Yes, Pat's music can be really cinematic, GREAT for road trips. If you have the chance to see him play live, don't miss it, it may just change your life, it sure changed mine.
Pat and Lyle together are masters of melody. Imagine writing this….
Mon guitariste préféré, mais Méthény est plus qu'un simple guitariste, ne pas oublier Lyle Mays qui a énormément contribué à l'essor du Pat Méthény Group...
Two of my favorites from the movie Fandango are IT'S FOR YOU and FARMERS TRUST! Can't miss!😂
Check out Pat Metheny's Limelight with the late Gary Brooker on vocals. You won't be disappointed. Jim
I consider this song to be an audial glimpse of heaven.
Welcome to the world of progressive jazz Chod! As a drummer I'm curious to know what you thought of the drummer/percussionist
